The wind blew across her mane wildly, snow all around for miles covering all living things in its icy prison. The opening to " The Sour Apple Mines." was defended tightly, the sky starting to become blacked out by the coming nightfall.
High above was turning a odd color of purple, with it the winds were picking up and the snow was falling at a faster rate. Once the shade of black would come, she'd be truly bucked, frozen solid by the upcoming whiteout on the horizon.
She steadied her breathing to try and stay warm, hidden behind a group of abandoned boulders near the quarry. Her black tactical stealth suit, sticking out among the snow like a sore hoof. Not only that, it did little to keep the mare warm, her whole body shivering in pain as she waited for an opening.
Four guards patrolled the opening with keen eyes, each wearing large white snow coats upon their bodies. Each stallion more stout than the other, three guarded the cave mouth while the others trotted around the perimeter.
"Grrr. I'll freeze to death before an opening comes into play." Sparkle whispered under her breath as her teeth chattered wildly.
Her one good violet colored hue darted across the land, searching for anything she could use as an advantage. Smirking she spotted salvation among the heavy layer of snow, doing a quick stretch the mare pounced into action.
"Do you think the rumors are true?" A stallion spoke up in a uneasy tone beside his partner.
"What about Moon?" He replied trotting ahead of his worried comrade, eyes watching the miles of snow around.
"Yeah." The worried pony nodded back as he watched the night begin to fall.
"Listen we don't get paid to gossip. I'm just here for the bits, if that crazy mare has some kind of weap..." The serious guard stopped in his tracks, eyes darting over to the large boulders out in the distance.
"What is it?" The weakling chattered aloud.
"I heard something. Buck check it out!" The guard reached into his coat removing a small crossbow.
"Why me!?" Buck whined in shock as his partner pointed his bow towards him.
"Because I SAID SO!" The guard snapped back, Buck groaning and removing his own crossbow before starting off.
"Phst. I have one too, you old bastard!" Bucked rolled his eyes and galloped through the deepening snow towards his target.
The wind had picked up considerably in the last few moments, a flurry of new powder slamming into the earth at high speeds. Buck winced in pain unable to see a hoof in front of his face, the winds howling wickedly around him as he stumbled forward.
Looking behind the boulders he spotted nothing missing from the normal, except for a small mound of snow in the middle. Taking a deep breath he walked forward slowly, roughly jabbing the mound with his crossbow.
Never noticing the smallest boulder behind him shifting to the side, Sparkle uncurling from within a confined space slowly. A small click hidden by the wind, allowed her to have a silver six inch blade pop out from the hoof of her suit.
"Phst. Nothing is..." Buck gasped aloud as a strong glow of unicorn magic pulled his head back, the swift swipe of a blade across his neck silencing him.
Crimson blood spilled onto the snow quickly as Sparkle retracted her blade, swiftly dumping the body inside her makeshift tomb, after sliding on his coat of course.
The warm blood steaming upon the snow, before being wafted high into the air and into the horizon. Sparkle lifted the hood of the coat up, hiding her face from view and picking up the bow.
Galloping out from behind the boulders, she swiftly charged towards the waiting guard at the side of the mine. The loud mouth screaming at her as the wind blocked out the words, he seemed slightly curious lifting his bow.
Sparkle took no chance, flinging the bow from her hoof in the air. Catching it in her magic glow, it swiftly fired the bolt towards the waiting guard. He had no time to react, no time to scream.
The arrow pierced through his eye like butter, the stallion wobbling to the side before collapsing into the snow with a dull thud. Sparkle could only watch in silence as he twitched in the snow at her hooves, blood pouring out behind his head.
With a soft roll of the eye, she used her magic to lift up his head and twist firmly to the right. A soft snapping sound wafting off into the distance, ensured he was out of the game.
Two were down out of four. She'd need to be swift and deal with the last two, galloping off through the snow she peeked around the corner. Two large stallions stayed silent, watching the entrance with keen eyes and serious gazes.
Sparkle bit her lower lip and lit up her horn, taking a deep breath she lunged forward to attack. The stallions swung their attention to the small mare, her horn shooting off a bright flash of light to stun them.
Both stallions went dark as they dropped their weapons into the snow, having them sink away never to be seen by them again. Sparkle unclipped her blade, slashing at one blind stallions cheek as he howled in pain.
She bucked the the other in his side as he toppled over into the snow, taking only seconds to jab the blade through the side of his skull afterwards. His body twitching before going limp, the standing stallion could only see a blur as he felt a blade pierce his heart.
Gasping softly he felt the blade twist and pull out, his blood pouring out onto the snow in a loud hiss. He tried to grab for the figure that ended his life, yet only swiped at air with his hooves before collapsing.
Using her magic she pulled both bodies off to the side of the mine, allowing the harshly falling snow to do the rest in covering up the guards. Violet hue looking back to the entrance, she took a soft sigh knowing this would be a long night.
Clicking back the blade into her suit, she galloped over to the entrance. Going prone on her belly in the snow, she crawled into the darkness as if greeting an old friend.
This line of work had a knack for eating away at the soul.
And breaking the heart.
