Story of Maverick- Chapter 1: Small Town, Small Trouble
The afternoon sun painted the sky orange, bathing Farron in a soft glow. Farron didn’t have much to its name and the ponies who lived there had even less. Everypony with anything had a small patch of land to claim as their own and a shabby hut or shack to take shelter in. The typical atmosphere of the village was almost as lifeless as the land each farmer slaved over. The villagers claimed collective possession of the village because it was the most anypony could own. However, there was one more thing Farron had: a little troublemaker.
“Get back here, you li’l rat wit’ wings,” shouted a gray-speckled stallion.
Three feet ahead of him was a green colt, cackling devilishly as he ran from the older pony. The colt held in his teeth a large potato, a yield rarely found in Farron’s poor soil.
“I’m not a rat, I’m a BAT,” the colt mumbled through the spud.
With a few flaps of his bat wings, the young Pegasus was in the air and farther ahead of his pursuer. The stallion snorted in fury and stomped a hoof. Just when the younger pony thought he was in the clear, he saw the ground getting closer
Scarlet Plume paced nervously in front of her door. She made it a strict practice as a mother to always keep her children in sight—or at least know where they are. When her fourth child snuck off that morning, she panicked as soon as she noticed he was gone. Scarlet knew he was likely to get into some kind of trouble if left unsupervised.
“Where could he be?”
Moments later, Scarlet saw a villager walking up to her home with a simmering scowl. She knew that scowl meant trouble.
“If I remember right, this little snot is one’a yours, Plume,” the Earth stallion growled. Scarlet looked behind him to see a little green colt with a guilty grin.
“Maverick!”
“Heh heh. Hi ma.”
Scarlet looked at the brown stallion and gulped nervously.
“What’s wrong, Russet?”
Russet’s eye twitched as his ears flattened against his head and he gritted his teeth.
“What’s wrong? I’ll tell ya what’s wrong!”
Russet pointed a hoof at Maverick, his teeth grinding.
“This punk is what’s wrong! I caught your kid rompin’ through my field, nosin’ around.”
Scarlet Plume gave Maverick a scolding glance, then turned her attention back to Russet.
“He’s a little colt, Russet. It’s only natural for him to play around and be curious.”
Russet stomped a hoof and barked “don’t you defend him yet, missy! I ain’t even told you what I’m really boilin’ about!”
The farmer heatedly told Scarlet Plume about how he caught Maverick stealing his potatoes.
“Hey,” Maverick protested. “You only saw me with one potato and it wasn’t even on your land!”
“I saw you kick it off my property!”
Maverick snorted defiantly and retorted “So you saw me take one potato. What’s the big deal?”
Scarlet could see Russet was close to exploding, so she pulled her son away from the enraged older pony.
“I will give my son a strong talking to and make sure his punishment fits his wrong.”
Russet glared at Maverick, who stuck his tongue out, then let out a snort.
“Fine,” he said. “But you be sure to also give him a good kick from me.”
Scarlet gave Maverick a disappointed frown, to which he responded with a sheepish chuckle.
“Inside, Maverick.”

Story of Maverick- Chapter 2: A Kindled Home
“What were you thinking, Maverick? Trespassing? Stealing?”
Scarlet Plume closed the door and walked over to the “kitchen”.
“I had no idea where you were, son. I was worried sick about you and when I find you, this is what you were up to?”
Maverick rolled on the dirt floor, tuning his mother out. It was just part of the routine for him. He’d cause mischief, get in trouble, then get off with a slap on the ankle.
I’ve got it pretty good for the middle kid, he thought.
“Are you listening,” snapped Scarlet.
The young bat pony turned one ear towards his mother and started drawing in the dirt floor with a hoof. Scarlet Plume called his name six times before he answered her.
“I was havin’ fun, ma. Somethin’ else this dump needs.”
Scarlet stared at him with shock.
“Y-you think stealing is fun?!”
Maverick tried to hold back a grin and would have laughed after saying yes. As much as he liked teasing and infuriating ponies, his mother was off-limits.
With a straight face, Maverick replied “no ma. I meant I was havin’ fun before I stole Potato Pony’s spuds.”
Scarlet let out a relieved sigh, then realized that Maverick said “spuds” not “spud”.
“Wait, I thought you said you only took one potato!”
Maverick snickered as his tail swished around.
“I never said I only stole one potato. I said Potato Pony only saw me taking one.”
The green colt grinned devilishly as he thought about his buried loot. All he had to do now was dig it up and his family could have enough food to actually fill all of their bellies. Scarlet commanded him to return the stolen potatoes right away.
“Is Maverick in trouble,” asked an orange Earth filly. Scarlet tensed up, wishing her second youngest daughter hadn’t overheard them.
“No, Marmalade,” she sighed.
Maverick rolled his eyes and said “Yes, I’m in trouble.” This earned him a warning glance from his mother. Maverick reluctantly left their shack and walked over to Russet’s property.
No way am I giving those potatoes back, he thought. The only way to not have to give ‘em back is to make Potato Pony think I don’t have ‘em.
Maverick smirked and looked around for a nice, big rock. When he found a large enough stone, he positioned his hind leg so the tender flesh on his hoof was directly over it and gave a hard stomp. The pain was like lightning going up his little leg and made tears well up in his eyes.
Perfect.
With teary eyes and flattened ears, Maverick knocked on the door and put on the saddest face he could muster.
“What the hay’s the matter with you?”
“I-I’m so sorry, Mr. Russet,” Maverick bawled. “I took a lot of your potatoes and I’m sorry!”
Russet snorted indignantly as he looked down at Maverick. He had noticed a good portion of his crops missing. His mama must’ve wore him out good if he’s cryin’ a river like this, he thought.
“Okay, so you’re sorry. Where are my potatoes?”
Maverick widened his eyes, made himself tremble a little and wailed loudly.
“I—I don’t know, Mr. Russet!”
“What do you mean you don’t know?! Don’t you lie to me, colt,” Russet snarled.
Maverick curled up into a ball in pseudo-fear, grinning behind his hooves as he covered his face.
“I-I’m not! I left them in a pile behind that tree! When my ma told me to give ‘em back, I went lookin’ for ‘em, but they weren’t there!”
Russet had Maverick show him the hiding spot, which was empty just as he said. Russet cursed the Alicorns for his misfortune and stomped in rage. Maverick, on the other hand, was elated at the fact that he was getting away with his theft. All he had to do to ensure that he got away with it was create a scapegoat.
“Mr. Russet, I-I think I know who took your potatoes from me.”
“Who? Who stole ‘em? Who?!”
Maverick pointed to a shack made of cheap metal sheets. In that shack lived Gold Horn, Farron’s only Unicorn—excluding Maverick’s eldest sister. Who better to take the fall for stealing food than an uppity Unicorn who can’t farm? The stallion who stuck out even more than his home was the perfect fall pony and Russet thought the same. The stallion was already halfway to the Unicorn’s shack and Maverick knew he was in the clear. Nopony in the village liked Gold Horn because he was a Unicorn and more importantly, an outsider. It wouldn’t take more than an accusation to make him guilty in Everypony else’s eyes. That night, Maverick couldn’t keep from giggling and snickering to himself.
I’m in the clear , he thought. Nopony would believe Gold Horn in a million years. And after today, Nopony ever will.
What really put icing on the cake was that his family could finally eat a decent meal. That made the risks and trouble all worthwhile.

Three weeks after the potato theft, Scarlet received a letter from her second eldest child, Silver Dust. In the letter, she stated that she was coming home from her magic apprenticeship.
“Silver’s coming home?”
Maverick beamed like the sun at the thought of his oldest sister coming home for the first time in two years. Out of his six siblings, Silver Dust was Maverick’s favorite. She was the only Unicorn in the family, so her magic set her far apart from her brothers and sisters. Marmalade was bouncing with excitement.
“Do you think she’ll stay this time?”
“Would be nice if she did,” said Failsafe, the eldest. “We could use another set of hooves, especially with winter creeping up.”
“Why should she stay,” snapped Maverick. “I say that she should go back so she can be the best, uh, magic Unicorn pony ever!” She can’t stay , he thought. She went away to learn magic so she could get out of this village! To do more than struggle in the dirt all her life!
Scarlet Plume forced a smile and said “What she does is up to her. We should just enjoy the time we’ll have with her until she goes back.”
Failsafe went through the food they had stored and furrowed his brow.
“We’ll have to eat light for this next month if we want to have enough food to last us most of the winter.”
Scarlet’s demeanor darkened with worry and fear.
“Mama, are you okay,” asked Marmalade. Scarlet immediately put a smile on her face and looked at the young filly.
“Yes, I’m okay. Everything’s going to be fine, sweetie.”
Maverick scoffed and walked towards the door.
“Maverick, stay inside. It’s too late for fillies and colts to be out by themselves.”
“Okay, ma.”
Scarlet paused, then said “Everypony be sure to take small bites when you eat. We’ll just be eating dinner for a while.”
Failsafe gave a frustrated sigh and his younger siblings mumbled “okay”.
“How come,” asked Maverick. He knew exactly why; he just wanted to hear his mother say it.
“Don’t ask questions, Maverick.”
“Well I want to know, Fail!”
“Don’t call your brother Fail, Maverick. We’re going to only eat dinner so we have more time to work and play.”
Maverick returned Serenity’s forced smile with a false smile of his own. As soon as she looked away, Maverick frowned. Why do adults always lie and not tell kids things when something’s wrong? We’re not stupid. Adults are always telling me and other foals to tell the truth, but they’ll lie to our faces all the time! It’s not fair!
Maverick looked up at the moon from the window and sighed. He could imagine flying over Farron and to the moon. Leaving behind all of the dirt, poverty and lifeless village ponies. If he could just leave like Silver Dust did, he could find something more. Maybe he could finally get his Cutie Mark; preferably for something not farming-related.
Anything but farming, anywhere but here¸ he thought as he let out a yawn. Maybe Silver would let me come with her. I don’t care where we go. I just want to get out of this place. Maverick drifted off to sleep with thoughts of the world outside of Farron.

Two weeks later, Silver Dust arrived in Farron via carriage.
“Looks like Scarlet’s Unicorn kid is back,” said a villager.
“How long do you bet she’ll stay this time?”
“I’d give ‘er a day before she runs back to the big city with the other Unicorns.”
Silver levitated her bags and walked towards her family’s shack. She felt the stares directed at her, but kept her gaze on her home.
Just ignore them, Silver , she thought. They gave you funny looks before. It’s nothing new to you.
“Hello, mother.”
“It’s so good to see you again, honey!”
Scarlet Plume hugged Silver Dust, but her daughter returned the embrace halfheartedly.
“Please, come inside. Kids, come help your sister with—“
“I don’t need any help,” Silver Dust cut off. “I can carry all of my bags with my magic.” She quickly said “excuse me” and walked through the door into a chorus of helloes and jubilant laughter.
“Silver Dust, Silver Dust!”
“Welcome home, sis!”
“What’s it like livin’ with the Unicorns, Silver?”
“How come you’re wearing those fancy clothes?”
Maverick hopped onto Silver Dust’s back and wrapped his forelegs around her neck.
“It’s great to have you back, sis.”
Silver gave him an annoyed glance accompanied by a groan, but her gaze softened as she looked at Maverick’s smiling face.
“It’s nice to see you too, trickster,” she said with a small smile.
Silver Dust set her bags down on the dirt floor, then looked around the house. Failsafe followed her gaze.
“Something wrong, Silver?”
“No. I was just observing the…shack. It hasn’t changed a bit.”
“Yep, same old home sweet home,” chimed Marmalade. Silver Dust ran a hoof across the floor and looked at the dirt on her hoof.
“Could have at least put in a wooden floor.”
Failsafe’s ears flattened against his head as he snarled. “What was that?”
“Nothing, Failsafe.”
The younger foals looked at the eldest two with curiosity.
“Floors can be made of wood?”
“Nuh-uh. How would they get the wood under the house?”
“Silvy said so, so it has to be true.”
Failsafe approached Silver, towering over her as he glared her down.
“What. Did. You. Say?”
Uh-oh , thought Marmalade. Failsafe’s doing his mad look.
Scarlet Plume stepped between them, chuckling nervously.
“Don’t worry about it, Failsafe. It was nothing.”
“No,” Silver interjected. “I have no problem repeating myself. You do not intimidate me, Failsafe. Intimidate means scare, by the way.”
Silver Dust levitated one of her bags over and sat on it. Maverick walked up and sat next to her, looking up at Failsafe defiantly.
“I said that you could have at least put in a wooden floor. Here, sit on my bag, Maverick.”
“Maverick, you and the other foals step outside,” commanded Failsafe. “Me and Silver need to talk—“
“No.” Maverick stood up next to his eldest sister. “You grown-ups always want to tell kids to leave when you talk about stuff. Everypony else here can go outside if they want to, but I want to know what you’re getting so mad about.”
Scarlet Plume spoke up, saying that it was an adult conversation. However, Silver Dust insisted that he stayed. Maverick plopped his rump down onto Silver’s bag and stared Failsafe in the eyes.
“If you really want to talk big bro, go ahead and talk.”
“Yes, by all means, speak.”
Failsafe told Silver Dust how he didn’t’ appreciate her snide comment about the floor. Silver defended herself by saying that she meant it for the family’s well-being, not because she was comparing Farron to a city or castle like her brother accused. The conversation eventually veered off towards Silver’s initial leaving.
“You never should have left, Silver! We needed you back then, just like we need you now! But you had to be selfish!”
“Shut up, Fail,” barked Maverick. “Silver was right to leave! Heck, she’s better for having left! Besides, she came back!”
“Maverick, what have I told you about calling your brother that? Failsafe, please, we’ve talked about this. Can you just let it go?”
Failsafe scowled and glared at Silver Dust.
“How can I let it go? She’s the only Unicorn in the family, but she refuses to use her weird magic to help us with important things.”
“With what important things,” Silver snapped. “Uselessly toiling through the dirt? Nothing valuable grows here! What does grow can only feed a few ponies for a week!”
Failsafe pointed a hoof at Silver Dust’s bags.
“What’s in those bags?”
“Why does it matter,” snapped Maverick.
“They’re full of clothes, Failsafe. All of my clothes.”
Failsafe scoffed in disbelieve, which provoked a glare from his sister.
“What is it?”
“Your stupid, fancy clothes. You. Every time you finally decide to come back home, you always talk down to Everypony. You prance around looking like a princess, comparing us to those Unicorns and I can’t stand it!”
Silver Dust stomped on the ground and neighed furiously.
“Don’t you judge me! Don’t you DARE judge me,” she screamed. “You think that just because I’m a Unicorn, life is easier or better for me? That I’m constantly judging you all or looking down on you? Well you’re wrong!”
Scarlet Plume shushed Silver Dust, looking at the door.
“Keep it down, Silver—“
“Shut up, mother! You’re nothing but a weak, stupid excuse of a mare! Be silent and let me talk!”
What the heck , thought Maverick. Why’s she attacking Ma? Failsafe’s the bad guy here!
“Sis, cool it. It ain’t Ma you should be mad at. Failsafe’s the one being a jerk.”
“Don’t treat me like I’m the bad guy, Maverick!”
Failsafe heatedly pointed at Silver Dust as he spoke, his voice getting louder.
“Everything I do is for this family! I take care of all the farm work so Ma don’t have as much to worry ‘bout! Who slaves over our field season after season so we have something to eat? When it was just you, me and Ma, who did all the heavy lifting without complaining? Who was there for Ma when you left?”
Silver Dust averted her gaze from her brother as she thought about the day she first left home. Scarlet Plume avoided looking at her two eldest children.
“That day really sucked,” said Maverick.
“Yeah, it did Maverick. Do you know why it sucked, Silver? Why it hurt when you left?”
Silver opened her mouth to answer, but she decided to let her brother answer his own question.
“It hurt ‘cause you left in the first place. And it looked like you weren’t going to come back. It hurt like hell ‘cause you abandoned us just like—“Failsafe cut himself off.
“Just like father did,” Silver finished. With those few words, everypony’s spirit dampened. Silver Dust looked at Failsafe sternly, but her eyes reflected pain.
“I’m not like him. I came back. I guess that was my mistake.”

Story of Maverick- Chapter 5: Ignition
Maverick laid on his sister’s bag, staring through the window. The moon was a little lower in the sky than usual. I guess the moon heard us all the way up there, he thought. I hate how quiet it gets at night.
He got up and walked around the shack before stopping near Scarlet Plume. Maverick nuzzled his mother affectionately.
“Love you, Ma.”
After taking a few steps away from Scarlet, Maverick looked over to Silver Dust’s spot and found it empty. What the hay?
A soft, light gray glow directed his attention to the door, which glowed as it closed.
“Silver?”
Maverick exited the shack and whispered his sister’s name. Oh bats. What if she’s leaving? I’ve got to find her before she leaves Farron!
Maverick flapped his wings as hard as he could, gaining altitude until he was ten feet off the ground.
“Silver! Silver Dust, where are you?”
He felt his wings burn with fatigue and his body starting to fall. Oh crap, this is really gonna hurt.
He shut his eyes and waited for the pain of the hard ground kissing his face, but the sensation never came.
“You don’t need to break your neck to get my attention, Maverick.”
Silver Dust held her little brother over the ground with her magic, staring at him with sisterly concern.
“Honestly, you nearly made me die of fright. For a little colt, you’re certainly a big hoof full.”
Silver set him down gently and the two of them went to an old, bare tree near the edge of Farron.
“So, trickster, when did you start flying?”
Maverick gave her one of his big, mischievous grins.
“I’ve been flying since the last time you visited. Surprised, sis?”
Silver Dust ruffled his mane and Maverick playfully pulled her tail in return. The two talked, laughed and played by the old tree just like they used to five years ago when everything was simple and clean. When Silver Dust was always home and Maverick had his best friend to talk to. However, those days were long gone and both of them knew that they would never return.
“You were going to leave, weren’t you Silver Dust?”
Silver Dust wrapped a foreleg around Maverick’s small body and held him close.
“Of course not, Maverick. I was just—“
“Stop.”
Maverick pulled away and looked his sister in the eyes.
“Don’t lie to me so I’ll feel better. Or because you think it’s better I don’t know. Ma does that and it never works. Failsafe and other grown-ups lie to me and other fillies and colts because they think we’re too young to understand.”
Maverick stood up, his ears pressing against his head.
“I hate it when grown-ups try to hide stuff from kids when something’s wrong. I’m sick of it! So don’t you lie to me too, Silver!”
Tears rolled down Maverick’s face and he sobbed.
“I’m sorry, Maverick.”
Silver embraced her little brother in a warm hug and rubbed his back. They sat there in silence for what felt like ages before Silver Dust spoke up.
“Yes Maverick, I am leaving. My being here clearly isn’t making things any better. Other than you, there’s nothing here worth staying for. This time, I’m not coming back.”
Silver looked down at Maverick, expecting disappointment on his face. Instead, she saw a wide grin.
“That’s just fine for what I have in mind, sis! I could go to your magic learny thing with you!”
Silver Dust stared in surprise.
“Wait, what? Maverick, you can’t come with me. What even put this idea in your head?”
“I know I’m not a Unicorn and I can’t learn magic, but it’s okay, right? I don’t even have to stay in the same room! I promise I won’t get in your way Silver!”
“Maverick, I’m telling you that you can’t come with me—“
“Why not? Why can’t I come with you? What did I do wrong, sis? I’ll do whatever I have to, just—“
“I’m not learning magic anymore, okay? I tried my best and worked hard for five years, but it wasn’t good enough.”
Maverick lowered one ear and tilted his head.
“I don’t get it, sis. What does that mean?”
“It means that I failed, Maverick! I didn’t cut it, I flunked out! I did well at first, but after the spells got more advance, I started struggling to stay afloat.”
Silver Dust sighed and hung her head. Maverick felt something wet fall onto him and looked up. For the first time in his young life, he saw Silver Dust cry.
“I had to take remedial lesson after remedial lesson. After a year, I was so far behind that my teacher gave up trying to teach me anything else.”
I want to understand , Maverick thought. But I just don’t get all of this school stuff.
“I don’t understand, Silver. What does this have to do with me going with you?”
“When I was learning magic, my teacher allowed me to live in a house in the city. When my progress stopped, he told me to gather all of my things. He said ‘anything of yours that’s left will be burned.’”
“Sis, I—“I don’t even know what to say .
“That’s why you can’t go with me, Maverick. I don’t have any work, I don’t have a place to stay and I won’t stay here in Farron. I can’t provide you stability in my situation, let alone food or shelter.”
“I don’t care, Silver! I don’t need to know what’s coming next or when I’ll eat again! I just want to be with you and get out of this dead village!”
Maverick looked up at his sister with desperate, pleading eyes. Take me with you sis. You have to take me with you!
Silver Dust hugged Maverick tightly and ruffled his mane, making him smile and sigh with relief. Before he could get comfortable in his sister’s embrace, he suddenly felt weightless.
“What the—“
“I’m sorry, Maverick. I can’t take care of you and myself.”
Silver Dust levitated her bags close to herself and looked at her beloved brother one last time, her eyes apologetic and sorrowful.
“Silver! Don’t leave me here, Silver Dust! Sis! Sis!”

“I have never been so humiliated or disappointed in my life!”
Loud smacks and pained cries resounded through the shack as Scarlet Plume’s hoof repeatedly struck Maverick’s rear. Scarlet’s younger children kept their eyes away from their brother’s punishment, wincing with each smack of Scarlet’s hoof.
“I’ve never seen mama so angry before.”
Scarlet Plume set Maverick down and stood up, shaking her aching hoof.
“It’s not that I’m angry with him—I’m not even that mad. I’m just…” she sighed. “I’m just extremely disappointed in you, Maverick.”
“She ain’t the only—“
“Failsafe, be quiet. You may be his older brother, but I am his mother. It’s my job to scold him and correct him, not yours.”
Maverick rubbed his sore rump and looked up at his mother with big, watery eyes.
“I’m really, really sorry, Ma.” A good old sad look and teary eyes will soften her up. It works every time.
Scarlet and Maverick looked each other in the eyes for a few moments, but the mare’s expression didn’t change.
Why isn’t it working? And what’s with Ma’s eyes? They’re not warm and sweet like before. They’re…different, like something’s missing.
“D-don’t you want to know why I did it, Ma? Maybe if I explain, you can under—“
“You’re not talking your way out of this one, young colt,” Scarlet snapped sharply.
Maverick flinched backwards from his mother’s tone, his ears pressing against his head.
“I’ve taken it easy on you and stood up for you every time you got in trouble, Maverick. Without thought and without question. Every single time, just like today.”
I don’t like how her eyes look now , Maverick thought. I don’t like where this is going!
“Ma, please, just let me tell ya—“
“No! Not this time, Maverick! Do you understand just how serious this is? Ponies in Farron already didn’t like you because of your mischief. And now they think you’re a thief!”
Scarlet stomped her hooves and shook her head.
“Do you know how it has made me look to keep protecting you, son? Do you know how the other mares and stallions talk about me when my back is turned?”
What? But you’re the best ma in the world! Why would anypony talk bad about you?
Maverick started to say something, but Scarlet silenced him with a raise of her hoof.
“But that’s not the worst part. I can handle idle gossip about me. But what irks me—what HURTS me is when ponies attack my children. When I heard you be accused of stealing, I chose to believe the best about you. I defended you today—Failsafe got his leg broken because we believed in you.”
Scarlet’s voice cracked and her eyes began to water, making Maverick’s heart ache.
“Ma—Ma, please don’t cry.”
Scarlet wiped her eyes and sighed. “You’re right. I shouldn’t cry, because I’ve brought this on myself and you. I saw what I wanted to see, but now I see you for what you really are: trouble.”
His mother’s words pierced Maverick’s heart like a spear. Each beat hurt with a pain deeper than any kind the colt was familiar with.
Marmalade looked at the hurt look on her brother’s face, then turned to her mother and said “You don’t really mean that, right?”
She means it , thought Maverick. Just like every other grown-up in the village.
A sob escaped Maverick’s lips, then his face contorted into a snarl.
“I did it for us! I took all those potatoes so we wouldn’t starve to death!”
“It doesn’t matter why you did it, Maverick! Stealing is wrong no matter what!”
“Don’t you yell at Ma,” Failsafe commanded.
Maverick stomped over and bit Failsafe’s broken leg, making him yowl in pain.
“Maverick!”
“Shut up! Eating less won’t let us survive winter! More food will! But hardly enough food grows here to actually feed us!”
The youngest sibling started wailing and Maverick pointed sharply at him.
“Foals need to eat more so they can grow, right? Especially when they’re babies. Little Sapling will DIE before winter’s over if we do what you and Failsafe talked about! I bet the rest of us won’t last long past winter!”
The youngest sisters shrieked fearfully as their eyes grew to the size of the moon.
“Sapling’s gonna die?”
“Mint, Clover, Nopony is going to die,” stated Failsafe.
Failsafe and Scarlet chastised Maverick, but he continued to shout and argue with both of them.
“It’s no wonder Silver Dust left this lousy place!”
Failsafe glared at Maverick, raising his body as much as he could without causing his leg pain.
“Don’t talk about her. Don’t even bring up her name,” he growled.
“Failsafe…”
“I’ll do more than talk about Silver. I’m going to do the same thing she did: leave!”
“You will do no such thing, young colt! You’re too young to fend for yourself,” said Scarlet. “You wouldn’t last a day on your own.”
Maverick stood tall. “Then I’ll leave when I’m older, bigger and stronger! I don’t want to go down the same dead end road as every pony here! I don’t know what’s out there…” He pointed at the image of a branching flame on his flank. “But I swear by my new Cutie Mark that I’ll blaze my own trail!”

Story of Maverick- Chapter 8: Running Start
Over the course of a week, the ponies of Farron harvested the last of their crops and prepared the fields for winter. Due to Failsafe’s injury, Scarlet Plume had Marmalade and Maverick help her in the field. Marmalade was happy to lend her mother a hoof, making a game out of the work. Maverick, on the other hand, worked begrudgingly and half-heartedly.
“Pick up the pace with your picking, son. We need to have as much food out of the ground as possible before the Pegasi bring the first snow of winter.”
As if on cue, the temperature began to drop as two masses approached Farron.
As the closer mass approached, the shapes of individual Pegasi became more defined. The chorus of wing flaps and clinking armor also became louder as the winged ponies got closer.
“Blast the stars,” a stallion grumbled. “They’re here earlier this time.
“Do you see the size of the clouds they brought? What are they trying to do? Freeze us to death?”
The Earth Ponies of Farron met the Pegasi at the edge of the village, a single pony from each group stepping forward.
“Cyclone Cut.”
“Hard Oak. You’re looking as sturdy as ever. A little on the thin side this year, though.”
The other Pegasi snickered, earning them glares from the earthbound residents of Farron.
“The earth didn’t give us as much of its bounty this year,” Oak stated.
He looked over the gray Pegasus before him and smirked.
“You’re sporting some new scars, Cyclone. You must be getting rusty out there, soldier.”
Now it was Cyclone’s turn to scowl, his comrades’ laughter ceasing.
“I would hope that this lean year—“
“We have your food, same amount as usual. It’s spreading our own supply thin, but we’re upholding our end of the agreement.”
Six sacks containing cabbages, potatoes and carrots were handed over to the Pegasi. However, instead of leaving immediately, they huddled together and spoke amongst themselves.
Wait a second , thought Maverick. Silver was given a chance to leave by other Unicorns. Maybe I can get out of this place by going with other Pegasi!
He snuck away from his family and towards the back of the crowd.
“What’s the holdup? You got your food, now leave us be!”
“Just a moment, earthbounds. We can see that things are pretty rough for you right now, so we’d like to cut you a deal.”
Hard Oak raised an eyebrow.
“What sort of deal?”
“Simple,” stated a Pegasus. “You give us some extra food this winter and we’ll give you less snow. That sounds fair, doesn’t it?”
“What? Are you featherheads out of your minds?”
“We barely have enough to feed ourselves as it is! Now you’re asking for extra?”
One Pegasus flew up and kicked a cloud, dumping snow on a few Earth Ponies below and laughing.
“We’re making you mud ponies a pretty generous offer. Besides, you don’t want your little shantytown to be buried in snow, do you?”
Ponies were about to come to blows when suddenly Maverick came galloping up from behind the crowd.
“Hey Pegasi! Check this out!”
He leaped into the air and began flapping his wings, flying over ponies’ heads.
“Agh! What in Tartarus?”
“He’s doing that freaky fire thing again!”
“Scarlet Plume, control your son!”
“Can it—oof!”
Maverick crashed face first into the dirt, skidding to a stop in front of the Pegasus troops. Ow. Okay, that did NOT turn out as cool as I pictured it.
“What do you know? There really is one of those freaky bat ponies here.”
“I figured they were just spooks from camp stories.”
“Cyclone looked down at Maverick with a half smirk and a raised eyebrow.
“Can we help you, son? That was, heh heh, one heck of a flop right there.”
“Heck yeah, you can help me! Take me with you guys!”
Cyclone blinked in surprise as Scarlet’s jaw dropped three feet. A thick silence hung in the air for what felt like years, then it was shattered by the Pegasi’s guffaws.
“You’re kidding, right?”
“Get a load of this colt! Ha!”
“What’s so funny? I’m being serious!”
Maverick stomped a hoof to emphasize his point.
“Heh heh heh. Listen, kid. Do you think we recruit anypony who asks?”
“I’m a Pegasus just like you. What’s the problem?”
“You may have wings, but you sure as sleet don’t know how to use them,” said Cyclone.
“I do too! I flew right in front of you!”
Cyclone chuckled as he walked up to the green colt.
“That wasn’t flying,” he said as he spread his wings. In an instant, Cyclone took to the sky and effortlessly maneuvered through the sky with smooth turns and sharp dives.
Holy Alicorns above , Maverick thought as he watched with awe. Cyclone landed on top of a cloud, dispensing a sprinkle of snow.
“THAT’S flying. If you could do at least that much, I might’ve considered drafting you as a junior trainee.”
“Now that the entertainment’s over, back to business. Do we have a deal, dirt munchers?”
Hard Oak and the other ponies gathered together and discussed the matter away from the Pegasi. After much talk, Hard Oak walked up to Cyclone with his chest puffed out.
“We’ve come to a decision. We’re not going to give you any more food than the agreed amount. Just because you control our weather doesn’t mean we’ll give in to your threats.”
One soldier scoffed and stepped forward.
“We don’t just control the weather, mud pony,” she hissed. “There are a lot of dangerous creatures out there. We’re all that stands between them and you.”
“Stand down, soldier,” commanded Cyclone. “They gave us their answer. Our business here is finished.”
Everypony watched the Pegasi bring down the first snow of winter, then fly away. Maverick’s ears twitched and his tail swished around as he watched the winged soldiers vanish over the horizon.
I’ve got to learn how to fly like that. Flying is my ticket out of here!

Starting that winter, Maverick worked hard on his flying to impress the Pegasi. As soon as spring came around, Maverick displayed the fruits of his months of practice. The Pegasi were unimpressed, but Maverick tried again when they changed spring to summer. He kept practicing and testing himself, undeterred by naysayers or repeated failures. Seasons passed and his flying improved bit by bit. Years passed and the fire within him burned hotter and brighter as he grew from a colt to a young stallion.
Marmalade walked around Farron, searching every nook and cranny.
“Maverick! Maverick! Ugh, where is—“
She then shrieked in fright as she was suddenly drenched by a shower of sleet.
“MAV!”
Maverick cackled as he hopped off of his cloud perch and hovered over his sister.
“You should’ve heard yourself scream, sis! And the face you made? Hilarious!”
Marmalade swatted at her younger brother, then shook water off of herself.
“You know I hate it when you do that!”
“Duh. Why do you think I do it?”
Two young stallions wolf whistled at Marmalade as they walked by, making her blush and Maverick hiss at them.
“Where were you, Mav? You missed all of your chores.”
Maverick scoffed and waved a hoof dismissively.
“Yeah, that’s why I was gone so long. Forget about that! Do you know what day is coming up soon?”
“The first day of summer, thank the Alicorns.”
Marmalade shivered and rubbed her soaked orange fur before walking towards her family’s field. Maverick grinned wider and wider as he walked beside her.
“Not the day I’m talking about, but that day’s important too.”
“Mav, you’ve been at it for ten years. Don’t you think you should give it a rest and just leave things be?”
“No way, Marmalade! I’m not going to be a sad little farmer. Besides, I’m going to pull it off and wow them this season! I know it!”
He walked backwards and pointed at his flank.
“I can feel it in my—“
Maverick ate a hoof-full of soil as he face planted into the ground. Okay, that was NOT funny.
He spat out dirt and checked his rump for hoof prints before turning around with a glare.
“Oh, sorry Maverick,” said a tan and brown stallion. “I thought this lovely little mare was being pestered by a nasty, oversized bat. Turns out I was just kicking you.”
Just when my day was getting really good, THIS plot hole has to show up.
“It sucks to see you too, Mudslide. What do you want?”
“Maverick, be nice,” Marmalade scolded. She gave a smile to Mudslide, which he returned with his own. Their relationship was common knowledge in Farron; likewise for Maverick and Mudslide’s rivalry.
Of bucking course. Sucker punch me to make me look stupid, then hide behind Marm.
Maverick glared sourly at Mudslide as the three of them walked home.
You’re playing against the wrong pony, lovercolt.
An impish grin spread over Maverick’s face as he let himself lag a few hoofsteps behind Marmalade and Mudslide. He lined his wings up with their plots and fanned his right wing. After a few repetitions, a small green flame flared out from the tip of his wing and ignited Mudslide’s tail. Perfect.
“Hey Mudslide, you’re tail’s on fire.”
Mudslide’s eyes widened and he galloped away screaming in panic.
“Mudslide!”
Marmalade punched Maverick in the foreleg as he erupted into a fit of laughter.
“Real mature, Maverick. Keep it up and you won’t get any marmalade on your birthday.”
“Oh come on! Don’t be that way, Marm.”
The orange mare sat down and crossed her forelegs, her expression far from amused.
“Aw, fine. I’ll behave…mostly. Just let me have some marmalade!”
He sat on his hind legs and clasped his hooves together pleadingly. After a few moments, Marmalade smiled and returned to all four legs.
“Three days. Think you can stay out of trouble that long?”
“For your marmalade, I’d actually do my chores for three days.”
As promised, Maverick stayed out of trouble for the next three days. He completed his chores with vigor, cut back on his backtalk and even refrained from his usual antics. By the noon of the third day, Maverick could barely contain his excitement.
“Happy birthday, Mavvy!”
“Thanks Mint, thanks Clover. You little mares ready for the best part of my birthday?”
The three of them chanted “marmalade” as they strolled over to their family’s shack. Once inside, Maverick was greeted by a chorus of “happy birthday”s. Scarlet, Mudslide and each of Maverick’s siblings embraced him warmly. Failsafe gave him a firm pat on the shoulder.
“Eighteen years old. How does it feel to be a full stallion?”
“Dunno. Ask me again when I meet a nice mare.”
Failsafe playfully punched him in the shoulder.
“Welcome to full adulthood, knucklehead. Try not to do as much stupid crap from now on.”
Sapling prodded Maverick’s hind leg, prompting him to turn around.
“How does it feel to be old, big bro?”
“Well, I’m still in one piece and good-looking. I’d say pretty darn good so far!”
Scarlet and Marmalade set up eight jars of marmalade as everypony sat in a circle and wished Maverick well. Even Mudslide gave him his best wishes.
This is nice , Maverick thought as he sipped his marmalade. I’m…I’m going to miss this.
He locked eyes with his rival and the two stallions stared in tense silence for a few moments.
“You take care of Marmalade when I’m gone. And you better treat her right. Got it?”
Mudslide was taken aback by Maverick’s sudden blessing.
“Yeah. I will.”
“Where are you going?” asked Sapling. Scarlet and Failsafe’s smiles slowly vanished. Even Maverick’s smile faltered for a moment.
“You know, away from Farron. I’ve been planning to leave for a long time, remember?”
“Are you coming back?”
The atmosphere thickened further as silence rang through the shack.
I have no intention of coming back. This’ll be my last day in Farron.
“I’ll think about it. But I can’t tell you when, little Sap. Got to keep ponies guessing.”
Sapling laughed as Maverick affectionately ruffled his mane. The family kept celebrating, laughing and playing until sundown. After his siblings went to bed, Maverick stepped outside and gazed at the moon.
Could I reach the moon right now if I tried?
He extended his wings and crouched, his muscles taut and ready for action.
“Maverick.”
He swiveled his head to see his mother sidling up beside him.
“Is there anything I can say to get you to stay? If Cyclone recruits you this time.”
Scarlet examined Maverick closely. She noted his wild and messy mane, the fire always burning in his eyes and his now apparent size.
I never noticed how big he’d gotten over the years.
Her heart ached with a long-forgotten heartbreak as she stared at his face.
He looks so much like his father.
“I know this is going to hurt, Ma. But I’m going to impress the Pegasi and get out of here.”
Scarlet sighed, hanging her head.
“I know. Just take care of yourself, okay?”
Maverick wrapped a foreleg around her and pulled her in for a warm embrace.
“I love you, Ma.”
“I love you too, son.”
The two of them sat there gazing at the moon in silence long into the night.

The next morning, Maverick got up early to do warm-ups. He stretched, sprinted and flew a few practice laps in the sky. After completing his warm-up routine, Maverick flew to Farron’s front gate and waited. As the hours passed, more ponies arrived and waited for the Pegasi to arrive.
“Still haven’t given up, I see,” stated Hard Oak. The older stallion sat patiently next to Maverick and stared ahead.
“It’d be a real waste if I gave up now, old timer.”
“Yeah, it would be.”
Eventually, a squadron of Pegasus soldiers soared up to Farron and landed in front of the village. Cyclone Cuts led the squadron, just like he led previous teams visiting Farron over the past ten years. He scanned the crowd like a hunting falcon, quickly pinpointing Maverick amongst the villagers.
Like clockwork , Cyclone thought with a chuckle. He’s a persistent one, I’ll give him that.
On his command, the other soldiers cleared the clouds over Farron and reigned in a wave of summer heat. As soon as they completed their task, Maverick trotted over to Cyclone Cuts and stood face to face with him. Nopony uttered a word or budged an inch as the two stallions stared each other down.
“Show me what you’ve got, hot shot.”
Maverick bolted past Cyclone and quickly took to the sky. He soared, glided and dove through the air. Trails of green fire danced behind him, tracing erratic patterns on the sky. Scarlet watched in awe, her eyes wide and mouth agape. Mint, Clover and Sapling wore mile-wide smiles and their eyes twinkled with fascination. All of Farron’s residents eagerly spectated Maverick’s aerodynamic display.
The kid’s gotten better after all these years , thought Cyclone.
“East Early.”
“Yes, Sergeant Cyclone?”
“Let’s see how hot shot here performs with a challenger.”
“Yes, sir,” she said with a salute.
Early galloped a few feet and took off. She quickly caught up with Maverick and swooped in front of him, forcing him to halt.
What the heck?
Maverick let out an annoyed snort, swooped beneath her and then angled back up. As he resumed his previous flight path, East Early flew alongside him. When he banked right, she did the same; when he sped up, she flew even faster.
“What is your deal? Buzz off!”
Early rammed into him, making him stumble and fall a foot.
“Why don’t you make me buzz off?”
She slung her body at Maverick again, but this time he was ready. Maverick looped below and around her in a barrel roll and then slammed into her. He cackled impishly at Early’s creased brow and clenched jaw.
“Okay, but I’m the wrong pony to play this game with.”
Maverick’s attitude shifted from serious and focused to mischievous and playful.
If she wants to screw around, then that’s what we’ll do!
He crashed into her, impeded her flight paths, tugged at her tail and embraced her in midflight. Maverick did everything he could to infuriate, startle and fluster East Early. Much to his delight, his efforts succeeded.
“I’m getting really SICK of your bullshit games!”
“Really? That’s a shame. I’m loving them!”
Early screamed in fury and dove at him. Maverick flipped himself belly-up as he allowed himself to drop from the air, howling with laughter all the while.
“Officer Early, stand down,” commanded Cyclone.
However, the Pegasus mare ignored his command. All she hear was Maverick’s provocative, mischievous laughter. His cocky and devilish grin consumed her vision.
I’m going to wipe that stupid grin right off his face! She thought as she hurtled towards him.
“I said stand down, officer!”
Cyclone launched into the air like an arrow and snatched Early up in his forelegs. Both Pegasi grunted as they were rattled by the impact. Maverick spun around and snapped his wings open, slowing his short descent to the earth. His right ear twitched at the sound of a thwack.
Ooh, that sounded like it hurt! He thought with a grin.
Early hissed in pain as she rubbed her head, stinging pain radiating from her skull.
“You didn’t need to stop me, sergeant. I wasn’t going to hurt him—much.”
“That’s not why I told you to back off, Early.”
Cyclone grabbed her head and forced her to gaze downward. Less than twenty feet below was terra firma.
“If you’d kept your cool, you would’ve noticed two big things.”
“What were those things, sir?”
“For starters, the ground, obviously. Secondly, you would’ve seen that he was baiting you.”
Early facehoofed, her cheeks burning.
Biting blizzards! I can’t believe I fell for such a simple ruse!
She glanced at him as she and Cyclone touched down. He was trotting their way, still grinning like a foal in a confectioner’s shop.
“Thanks for jumping in. I had a blast! You’re a great flier.”
Maverick extended a hoof, but Early didn’t respond to the gesture. After a few moments, she hesitantly tried to shake his hoof. Maverick yanked his hoof back and then hoof-bumped hers.
“Your performance was decent…for a rookie.”
Maverick then turned his attention to Cyclone, expectation reflected in his eyes.
“Well, old timer?”
The scarred soldier remained silent for a few moments.
“You’ve got to be one of the most knuckleheaded, persistent and determined colts I’ve ever met. After ten years, I’d say you’re worth a rain cloud’s piss. Welcome to the Cloudsdale Army.”
I…I did it. They’re going to take me where other Pegasi live!
At Cyclone’s command, the soldiers departed Farron in a V-formation. Maverick started to take off, but paused and galloped back to the village. He squeezed Scarlet in a warm, loving embrace and did the same to all of his siblings.
“I love you guys.”
“Come on, recruit! Get moving!”
Maverick flashed a brilliant smile, then flew off and joined the other Pegasi. Scarlet Plume watched him vanish over the horizon with a sad smile on her face.
“I love you too. I’m so proud of you, Maverick.”
Bittersweet tears dripped down her face to the warm earth.

The following morning awakened with disappointed voices and dwindled spirits.
“Where’s Silvy?”
“She didn’t show us any magic tricks or even say goodbye,” sniffled Marmalade. Maverick stared out of the window, watching as the gray clouds mirrored his crying eyes. Failsafe let out a frustrated sigh.
“Now those dang Pegasi decide to give us some rain. Next thing you know, they’ll be dumping snow on our heads and demanding food.”
Scarlet Plume looked at the food they had stored, then gave Failsafe a worried look.
“Will we have enough food left over after adding our contribution to the Pegasi’s payment?”
“Ugh. Just barely enough. If we spread our meals out and eat little bits at a time, we might make it through winter all right.”
Failsafe told his brothers and sisters that they had to do as little romping around once winter came around so they can save energy.
“But what’ll we do then?”
“Winter’s so boring. I wish the Pegasus ponies would just stop bringing it,” complained Marmalade.
Things are going from lousy to total dirt clods , thought Maverick as he looked at his family’s downtrodden disposition. Now’s as good a time as any to bring home those potatoes. That’s sure to cheer them all up!
“Ma, can I go outside for a little bit?”
“Maverick, it’s almost time for dinner. Besides, it’s raining outside.”
“It’ll just be for a quick minute, I promise!”
Scarlet gave it a little thought, then granted him permission to go outside.
“Yes! I’m going to bring back something that’ll make you guys smile!”
Maverick galloped over to the tree he hid the pilfered potatoes and started digging. The wet earth made the excavation easier and in no time, his prize was in view. Maverick’s wings flapped with excitement as his face broke out in a big grin.
“Aha!”
“Huh?”
Maverick’s wings shot out with a pomf as he turned around.
Oh horsefeathers, it’s Gold Horn! What the hay is he doing out here? Why right now?
“I knew something was rotten! I knew I was framed and now I have proof!”
Gold Horn shot Maverick with a weak bolt of magic, then proceeded to beat him around with his magic. Maverick tried to run, but Gold Horn tethered his neck to the tree with a rope of pale yellow magic.
“Oh no you don’t, you wretched little bastard. You’re not going anywhere!”
Oh crud, oh crud! He’s going to beat me black and blue! “I-if you hurt me, my big brother will break your neck! A-and my ma—“
“Will be just as furious and disappointed. But I won’t stop there. I’m going to clear my name in this dirt patch!”
Gold Horn went from shack to shack bringing ponies outside until the whole village was gathered around the trapped colt. Scarlet Plume moved to the front of the crowd.
“Wait a minute! What’s going on here, Gold Horn?”
“An excellent question, Ms. Plume. Allow me to shed some light on the situation.”
Gold Horn reminded Everypony of when a number of Russet’s potatoes were stolen and he was saddled with the blame.
“Just moments ago, I caught him red hoofed digging up his loot!”
Failsafe stepped forward, glaring at Gold intensely.
“How do we know he didn’t catch you digging them up? My little brother may take things to rile ponies up, but that’s because he’s a prankster. He ain’t no dirty thief.”
“Yeah!” agreed his siblings.
“’Sides, that colt told me himself that you took ‘em,” Russet stated. “Right after showing me where he left them—and they weren’t anywhere in sight.”
“Why don’t you go home, Gold Horn?” Failsafe suggested as he grabbed the Unicorn’s foreleg.
“Don’t you rough-handle me, you ill-bred dirt pony!”
Gold Horn blasted Failsafe with magic, only to get bucked right into another stallion. Soon, every stallion in Farron was participating in the brawl. In the middle of it was Maverick, sporting an amused grin and giggling at the show. The main punching bag was none other than Gold Horn.
This is awesome , Maverick thought. I’m going to get away, my family’s going to have enough food and there’s a ginormous fight to watch! It’s like the ultimate prank gone right!
His laughter stopped when he heard four sounds: two loud, chilling cracks and two screams of agony. Failsafe’s left hind leg had been stepped on and broken in the scuffle. On the other hand, a stallion snapped off Gold’s horn and was still beating him.
This…this isn’t fun anymore.
“Stop it, this is crazy!”
Scarlet Plume ran into the fray to try and help the battered Unicorn.
“You’re going to kill—“
“Shut up and stay out of this!”
Gold Horn’s attacker struck Scarlet to the ground, then kept hitting the crippled Unicorn.
“Ma!”
Scarlet’s younger children ran up to help their mother, but shrank back out of fear of being trampled.
This isn’t what I wanted at all! What should I do? I have to distract them or something! Or maybe I should just tell them the truth. But if I do that, I’ll end up in Tartarus from how much trouble I’ll be in! But if I don’t, Ma, Failsafe and Gold might be hurt even worse.
“It’s not worth Ma and Failsafe being hurt.”
Maverick began flapping his wings hard and kicking off of the ground.
“Stop! Everypony stop fighting!”
When his cries fell on deaf ears, he kept flapping his wings. Minutes passed and Maverick’s wings started to burn, but he kept trying to fly. Come on, Maverick! Do something that’ll get their attention in a flash!
The young Pegasus kicked off of the ground as he gave one last hard flap. As his wings came down, they released a large burst of bright green flames and launched Maverick into the air. Maverick continued to flap his wings, leaving a trail of fire as he flew around the tree in a squiggly circle. The ponies below had stopped fighting, gazing at the flaming little bat pony flittering over their heads.
“Everypony stop,” he shouted as he touched down. Marmalade pointed to his glowing flanks with awe.
“Maverick, your—“
“I did it.”
“You…did…what?” panted Failsafe.
Maverick then admitted in front of all of Farron that he stole Russet’s potatoes, buried them and pinned the blame on Gold Horn.
“See? All of the potatoes have my teeth marks in them! Gold Horn wouldn’t have to use his teeth because he could have used his magic.”
Scarlet and Failsafe could only sit stunned, staring at Maverick in silent shock.
“You see!” gloated Gold Horn. “I told you I was framed!”
He then passed out.
