Fidget Spinner
Chapter One--So It Begins
Load Full StoryRarity trotted through the glistening hallways of the Castle. She couldn’t wait to see Twilight and surprise her! She knocked on Twilight’s bedroom door a few times, then pushed it open, singing out, “Twilight! Wake up! I brought you breakfast in bed!”
The bed was empty.
“How odd…” Rarity mused. “Twilight is never up earlier than me. Except when she stays up all night… oh, bother.”
Spike spoke up behind her. “She’s holed up in the library. Has been all night. She got a package from Sunset through the mirror, some new thing from the human world. Hey, can I have one of those sausages?”
Rarity sighed and handed it to him with her magical aura. “No matter! I’ll bring it to her in the library! She’s probably hungry from working all night.”
Spike took a bite and swallowed. “True. Why are you doing this, anyway?”
“I haven’t been doing much for my friends recently,” Rarity explained, trotting across the halls again. “I’ve decided to try to act more within my Element. I’ve already helped Fluttershy groom her pets and given Applejack a pair of boots to lessen the strain of kicking trees over and over. Her hooves are always sore at the end of the day, poor dear. Well-” she smiled at Spike- “At least, they used to be.”
Humming softly, she opened the library door. “Twilight, dear,” she said, in a somewhat coaxing tone, “I think it’s time to take a break. Wouldn’t you like some breakfast?”
Twilight turned around. “Huh? Is it morning already?” She trotted over and took the tray from Rarity.
“What did Sunset even send you that kept you up all night? Usually she tells you all about the way these objects work, so you don’t have to waste time researching them.”
“I wasn’t researching…” Twilight admitted sheepishly, holding up a small object, shaped somewhat similarly to a clover.
“Well, then what were you doing?” Rarity demanded.
Twilight gave it a little flick with her aura and it spun around. Rarity watched with a mixture of interest and scorn. “And this kept you awake all night?” she blurted, taking it. “Surely it can’t be that…”
Her words faded slightly as she gave it a spin. She watched it turn, then spun it again. “Twilight, would you mind if I borrowed this for just a teensy little while?”
“Well, I suppose so,” Twilight agreed. “But only for a little while, all right?”
“Of course,” Rarity murmured, barely paying attention, as she trotted away, spinning the object.
Spike knocked on the door of the library several hours later. “Twilight? What are you doing in there?”
“Oh, nothing much…” Twilight said casually.
He opened the door. The library was absolutely flooded with fidget spinners. They were everywhere. And there, in the center of the chaos, was Twilight, spinning ten of them at once. “Oh, hi Spike!” she said, when she saw him. It took a few minutes. “Would you like to try one of these?” She handed one to him in her magical aura, her eyes never leaving the ten she had synchronized in midair.
“No thanks, I think I’m good,” he replied, backing away.
She shrugged. “Suit yourself.”
Fluttershy poked a head in. “Um, Twilight, I was wondering if--What’s going on in here?”
“Fidget spinners!”
“What?”
“Fidget spinners!” Twilight repeated, still not looking away from her twirling array. “They’re a huge hit in the human world, and soon they’ll be a huge hit here in Equestria, too! Try one!”
Fluttershy placed one on the floor and pushed one of the bulbs on the side. It spun around. She looked at it curiously, then pushed it again. “Hey, this is pretty fun!” she giggled. “Mind if I take this home, Twilight?”
“Sure, no problem,” Twilight said, not really listening.
Fluttershy picked it up with her mouth. The last Spike saw was her spinning it with a wing as she trotted off down the hall.
“What’cha doing, Rarity?”
Most ponies would be surprised by Pinkie suddenly popping out in front of them, hanging upside down from seemingly nothing at all. But not only was Rarity used to this by now, she was also completely focused on the spinner.
“Twilight called it a ‘fidget spinner’,” she explained, giving it another whirl.
Pinkie fell from midair and landed neatly on her hooves. “Looks fun! Can I try?”
Rarity reluctantly handed the spinner over to Pinkie, who flicked it excitedly. “Ooh, this is just as fun as it looks!”
Rarity nodded, watching PInkie enjoy it for a while. As she started to bounce off, still spinning it, she asked, “Um, Pinkie darling? May I have it back now?”
Pinkie didn’t even hear her. She had hung the spinner on a dangling lock of her hair, and now every time it slowed, she gave it another flick with a hoof.
“Howdy there Pinkie!” a friendly voice called. “What’cha got there?”
“A fidget spinner!” Pinkie flicked it and it whirled.
“What in tarnation is that?”
“Well, when you get all fidgety in your digity, you spin it!”
“What in the hay’s a digity?”
Pinkie giggled. “Just trust me, it’s fun! You wanna try?” She offered her lock of hair.
“Nothin’ doin’!” Applejack stated firmly, stomping her hoof. “That’s nonsense.”
“Suit yourself!” Pinkie bounded off down the road again.]
---A Few Days Later---
“Twilight, Ah’m startin’ ta get a mite worried.”
Twilight, now controlling fifty fidget spinners--at least, that was Applejack’s nearest count--didn’t even look up. “About what?”
“These here spinner thangs, that’s what! Fluttershy’s been neglectin’ her critters for days, Rainbow’s left off cloud duty entirely, and Rarity hasn’t sewn a single dress since this whole mess started! All of Ponyville’s just starin’ at these spinners. Pinkie ain’t even bakin’! That’s when ya know you’ve got a problem on yer hooves.”
“I’m sure it’s fine,” Twilight remarked, picking up another spinner to add to her floating group.
“It ain’t fine!” Applejack insisted. “And Spike agrees with me! Ain’t that right, Spike?”
Spike nodded. “Applejack has a point, Twilight! These spinners are getting out of hoof. Nopony’s doing anything anymore! They’re just sitting around and staring at their spinners!”
Twilight didn’t even reply to that one--she was too busy picking up three more fidget spinners and getting them going in precise sync with all the others. Applejack sighed and turned to go.
“Spike! Ah got it! We’ve just gotta send a letter to Princess Celestia!”
With a few swift strokes of a quill and a breath of fire, the letter was sent. Applejack looked out the window and watched it go with satisfaction. “This’ll all be cleared up in a jiffy now!” she said happily.
---Meanwhile, In Canterlot---
Princess Celestia glanced at the strange object she held in her aura. It looked something like a clover. Experimentally, she gave it a little spin.
