Enter the Multiverse

I had to duck in order to cross the threshold. I guess the house-tree architect didn't expect extra-dimensional beings taller then the average pony to be visiting. Typical. Once I was in, Twilight shut the door with her magic. Her house was a mess to say the least. Books of all different sizes and colors littered the floor. The desk also was smothered in broken quills, empty ink bottles, and half written scrolls.

"Please excuse the clutter, I haven't gotten around to cleaning in a while," she said leading me to a table much too small for a human. "Err..." she said realizing the problem.

"I'd rather stand anyway," I replied to her questioning look. She seemed relieved that there was something in this house that wouldn't need her tending to. She then flopped down in the chair opposite where I was standing. She stared at me and for the first time I saw how beat she really was. Her mane was uncoiffed, she had dark circles around her eyes and her coat seemed as if hadn't been truly washed for a couple days.

"So where shall we begin?" she asked using her magic to pour a cup of coffee from a non-electric brewer sitting on her desk. I eyed it from where I was standing. I hadn't had anything to drink in about two hours and that sprint to town hadn't helped the situation. I saw the light come on as she realized what I wanted.

"Oh, I'm sorry, what a terrible host I am. Would you like some coffee too? Do you drink coffee where you come from?" she said adding that last part as an after thought.

"Yes we do and I would love some, thank you," I answered in my best gentlemen voice.

"Sorry," she repeated, pouring me a glass with her magic. "It's just I've had a lot of studying to do lately and Princess Celestia has been assigning projects left and right..." She trailed off looking at her beverage as if it had some mystical answer to her problems. I grabbed my cup out of the air as it was offered and took a sip. I cringed when the fluid contacted my tongue. It was slightly colder than room temperature and had an unappetizing after taste. What was that? Plant matter?

***How I Knew What Plant Matter Tasted Like***

Don’t ask.

I then realized that plants were a regular part of a pony's diet and it would only make sense that they were in their coffee too. I decided to be polite and stomach at least half of it.

"Princess Celestia?" I questioned with my best raised-eyebrow face.

"Oh yeah, you're new here. She rules the land of Equestria with her sister, Princess Luna," she replied rather sleepily, sipping her coffee.

"And I would assume that this land is Equestria," I said acting stupid.

"Well then you would be correct. Alright, my turn to ask a question. Who rules over your land?" she said adding the last part with some genuine interest but still rather tired.

"Um, we don't have a supreme ruler, humans tried that several time and too often did it end in a lot of people dying," I said trying to use the lightest tone I could muster up. I knew that those types of things didn't happen here and if I wanted Twilight, and the rest of pony-kind, to accept me I would have to keep the dark side of humans quiet. Just another thing Twilight doesn't know wouldn't hurt her, right? "There are many different countries with different government structures but where I come from we have a new leader elected every four years."

"Wow, that's so...weird. I don't know if I could live like that, I'm so used to having an immortal ruler," she said now forgetting her fatigue and becoming enthralled in the conversation.

"My turn again," I said. This is why I loved ponies. If some alternate dimensional being were to end up on earth they would be put in a small metal room, chained and demanded answers of. Here, we've turned the interrogation into a game over a cup of coffee. "Has your society found laws for magic like the laws of physics?" I asked.

"Well yeah, we have Starswirl's Laws of Magic. Has your world not discovered these yet? I would love to share them with you if you have the time," she said excited by the change to her favorite topic.

"Well, no, we don't have laws for magic because where I come from we don't have magic," I said reminded of one of the reasons I watched the show back home.

"You don't have magic?!" she exclaimed, frightened by the idea, "Just where are you from?"

"Well I'm not exactly from this, um, world..." I said using the voice I use when trying to explain something to a younger child.

"You don't have to talk down to me, um," she said motioning for my name.

"Theo."

"Right, Theo, I'm the Princesse's number one student and I can handle anything you throw at me." she finished sternly.

"Okay, so I'm from a different universe," I bluntly stated. Twilight seemed to be taken a back by this.

"A different universe? Wow, I knew their existence was possible, but not transportation between them. How did you manage that?"

"Wait, so you know of quantum mechanics' multiple world theorem?" I questioned.

***A Crash Course in the Multiple World Theorem***

Quantum Theory allows for the existence of different universes where in, at every choice decided in a universe a new universe splits off for every possible outcome of said choice. This yields infinitely many universes each with a different outcome of events for every choice ever decided. This is called Multiple World Theorem or the multiverse.

"Yeah," she said eagerly, "I'm familiar with it."

"Right, so I come from a universe where my species is the apex species on this planet and magic doesn't exist in our fundamental laws of the universe. And so a couple of days ago I discovered a foreign piece of technology. Upon trying to fix the device, I somehow activated it and it brought me here," I said forcing out the words. It reminded of how normal my life was and how messed up it was.

"Well where is the device now?" she asked plainly.

"I really have no idea, it could be back at my house or it could still be travelling sideways thought universes. It could be in a billion little pieces scattered about the multiverse for all I know," I said, my frustration leaking into my voice a little more than I wanted. I took a deep breath trying to compose myself again.

"Well I can see this is stressful for you, being in a completely new reality and all, so whatever you need, we'll have it here. The people of Ponyville never turn down a friend," she said resting a hoof on my hand that was around my cup.

"Thanks Twilight, I knew I could count on you," I said noticing the sensation of her fur on my hand.

"How could you know to count on me, you've only known me for an hour." Shit. How could I let myself slip like that? I thought, come on, think! Control the situation before it controls you. That was something my parents had told me too often.

"Well...um...you just have that...um...aura about you." Yeah, real smooth Theo, but it will have to do. She gave me a little awkward smile and before she could ask anything else I said, "So, tell me, who else is as awesome as you here in Ponyville?" She gave a little giggle at my failed flattery.

"Well why would I tell you, If I could show you?" she said answering my question with a question. Alright, still in the game.
