I was out in Canterlot preparing myself for tonight. A few nights ago, Princess Luna had come to me and revealed her affection for me. She knew how I pined for Celestia and how she knew what it felt like to not have somebody you love feel the same way. I had pledged my loyalty to Luna, and we began to scheme. I would have my revenge and Luna would have what she always wanted, an endless night and the Royal Throne. After Shining Armor had gone to protect his wife in the Crystal Empire, I had been promoted to Captain of the Royal Guard. That made things much easier for me. I would be able to dismiss the guards standing outside Celestia's bedchambers. I pulled the trolley full of things I needed for tonight, even though the plan was simple, I wanted to be fully prepared. To my surprise, I saw Princess Twilight Sparkle walking my way. I put on a display and saluted as she came up to me.
When she said, "At ease." I lowered my hand and pretended to make friendly conversation, even though the sight of her in Canterlot worried me. She asked, "So what are you doing out in town?"
I chuckled and said, "I could be asking you the same thing, I'm just picking up some supplies for tonight." When she cocked an eyebrow, I stayed calm on the outside, even though on the inside, I was nervous as fuck. When she asked what the supplies were for, I told her, "The boys and I decided to plan some war games. It's all in good fun, nobody's going to get hurt."
Her smile told me that she fell for the lie I had thought up on the spot. She replied "Well that's good, I wouldn't want Celestia's finest getting themselves injured. Well, I guess I had better get to the train station before I miss the last train back to Ponyville." and with that she was on her way.
"She may be trouble later on, but she's not my main focus right now. I'll deal with her when Luna sees fit." I said to myself. I made my way back to the castle after picking up all the supplies. I only needed one bullet for Celestia, the rest were for anyone stupid enough to attack me or Luna when the news was announced publicly. When some of the other guards questioned what I was carrying all that ammo for, I smiled and said, "They're just blanks men. We'll be having some war games tomorrow afternoon." As I left I chuckled at how excited the guards were getting about my made up war games. I went to my chambers and prepared myself. Luna had given me the wings of an Alicorn, but I had kept them hidden ever since I got them. Everyone needed to think I was a Unicorn until tonight was over. I loaded my pistol and strapped it to my hip, hiding it with my uniform's coat.
I walked through the castle, the guards who were on night shift had also heard about the war games and were whispering excitedly to each other. I might actually have to schedule some war games if this keeps up, but I'd worry about that afterwards. I walked up to Celestia's bedchambers, where the two guards saluted me until I said, "At ease. I'm here to relieve you of your posts. Get yourselves ready for tomorrow's war games." The two walked off chatting about their expectations for the war games. When they were out of earshot, I quietly opened the door to Celestia's bedchambers, only to find her standing on her balcony, staring at the moon. I knocked lightly and said, "Your highness, pardon the interruption, but might I come in?"
She turned around to see me and smiled saying, "Caelan, of course, come on in." I almost felt bad for what I was about to do. Well, not really. I sat down in a chair at a tea table and she sat down across from me. She said, "So what brings you to me at this time of night?"
I chuckled lightly saying, "I actually wanted to confess something."
She cocked an eyebrow and said, "A confession? Have you committed some sort of crime?"
I shook my head and said, "No, this is a different type of confession." taking out a cigarette I asked, "You don't mind do you?" she shook her head as I lit it and said, "For years, I was raised to protect you my queen. Over those years, I felt something... I began to love you... But that has changed. All these years, I've tried to show my affection, to no avail. This ends tonight."
I pulled out the gun and pointed it at her head, which in response her eyes widened and she stuttered to make words, "If you loved me, why would you kill me!?"
I laughed maniacally and glared at her saying, "Because in all these years, the twenty years I've served here, you never even ONCE noticed my affections!" Her horn started to glow and I smugly said, "Not a chance princess." raising my gun towards her horn and firing, breaking the tip off and cutting her magic off. "And I have another secret up my sleeve as well." I flared my new wings, making them rip through the fabric of my uniform. Celestia's shock was the sweetest sight I had ever seen. "Goodbye, my love." I said as I fired once more, this time shooting her in the forehead.
As Celestia's lifeless body slumped to the floor, I put the gun back in my uniform and walked out. As the guards who were sleeping started to wake up, I announced on the loudspeakers, "All guards, report to the courtyard for a special briefing from myself and the Queen."
Luna walked up to me shortly afterwards and kissed my cheek saying, "So it's done, my dear? Celestia is?"
I nodded and said "Dead my Queen, just as you requested." We walked out onto the balcony overlooking all the guards, who were slightly surprised to see me with Luna, instead of Celestia.
One of them called out "Sir, where is Queen Celestia?" Luna looked like she was about to lose her temper and order that specific guard be executed, but I calmed her down.
"My guards. I have news for you. The Old Queen is dead, long live Queen Luna!" I knelt down to Luna's side, just the same as the night I pledged my loyalty to her.
She addressed the confused guards saying, "Celestia is dead, and I am the new queen. Those who do not comply will be publicly executed." As she said this, the sun began to lower and the moon began to rise.
I rose from my kneeling position and yelled, "Attention!"
The troops saluted and within a moment they said in union, "The Old Queen is dead! Long live Queen Luna!"
It had been a week since Luna and I had taken over Equestria. While most of Equestria was consumed by the eternal night, I had used my magic to cast an illusion over Ponyville to make it appear that the sun and moon were still rising and setting perfectly. I couldn't risk Twilight and her friends figuring out what had happened. However, I started to realize that she might get suspicious if she had received any letters from Celestia. I made my way to the throne room, where Luna was sitting in the throne. I suggested to her, "My queen, despite the illusion I've cast over Ponyville, Twilight may still grow suspicious if she does not hear from Celestia. Perhaps sending her a letter claiming that Celestia has fallen ill will distract her from this."
Luna twirled a finger in her hair before saying to me, "I believe you're right darling. Twilight would grow worried if Celestia didn't reply to her letters. I'll send her a letter telling her that my dear sister has come down with the Cockatrice Pox. That should be enough to convince her."
I nodded and grabbed a piece of parchment and a quill before writing down her every word. I sent the letter off to Twilight, and brought up a crystal orb to allow us to see if our deception would fool the naive mare. We saw her reading a book in her library, her wings flapping to cool her down from the heat that the false sun was producing.
As Twilight put down her book, she wiped some sweat off of her forehead. "Good Celestia it's hot out today..." As if on cue, Spike came into the room with two cones of ice cream, to which she perked up saying, "Thank you Spike, it's so hot out today I feel like I might pass out!"
Spike started eating his ice cream before a burst of green flames escaped his mouth and a roll of parchment appeared. Spike handed it to Twilight saying, "Hopefully Celestia has an explanation as to why she's made it so hot today. I may be cold-blooded, but even I can't stand this kind of heat."
Twilight chuckled at her assistant's joke as she unrolled the parchment and started reading
"Dear Twilight Sparkle,
I am writing you on my sister's behalf. She has fallen ill with a case of the Cockatrice Pox and is unable to attend to her duties of lowering the sun. I've been temporarily placed in charge of both the sun and moon while my sister recovers. I hope you'll be able to forgive any hot days you experience in Ponyville, I'm still not used to controlling the sun. Hopefully my sister will recover quickly and the heat will settle down. I hope you are enjoying the cool nights better than the hot days.

Twilight sighed saying, "That explains this heat, Luna's in charge of the sun and the moon right now."
Spike looked up from his ice cream and asked, "Huh? Is something wrong with Celestia?"
Twilight nodded, "She's come down with Cockatrice Pox. I hope she'll recover soon. I know Luna means well, but this heat is unbearable."
Back at the castle, I grinned at Luna and said, "It appears to have worked my queen. She suspects nothing." We went away from the crystal orb and towards our bedchambers to have a nice romantic dinner. Little did we know that we had also been deceived.
Twilight took the letter and showed it to her friends, and Fluttershy said worriedly, "I hope it's not serious..." Before Twilight rubbed the ink that wrote out the word 'Princess' and revealed the word 'Queen'
The group stood in shock as they saw that Luna tried to trick them, they knew what this meant... Nightmare Moon had returned.
Rarity pointed out that the sun was still high in the sky, something Nightmare Moon would never allow, trying to convince everyone that it was just Luna's famous ego getting out of hand again.
Twilight shook her head saying, "I wish that's what it was. Come outside and I'll show you." The group walked outside and Twilight's horn glowed before firing a magical blast at the sky, removing the illusion that the sun was still in the sky.
Back at the castle, a rush went down my spine, interrupting my dinner with Luna. I muttered something under my breath before flipping the table over in anger yelling "DAMN IT ALL!"
Luna seemed quite annoyed at my outburst, but kept her temper under control and calmly asked me, "What's wrong my king? It's not like you to lose your temper like that."
I looked at her, my eyes burning with rage as I yelled, "We've been had! I just felt my illusion over Ponyville disappear!" Luna's eyes went wide as I said this, and I knew she was about to blow her top, so I slowly made my way to the door and ran for dear life.
Luna yelled out in anger "DAMN YOU TWILIGHT! DAMN YOU ALL TO TARTARUS! I'LL GET YOU FOR THIS! I WILL NOT LET YOU RUIN MY PERFECT WORLD AGAIN!" she stormed out of her room, obviously looking for me to make me explain how she had found out.
Back in Ponyville, the group could hear Luna's yell, despite Ponyville being a day's trip from Canterlot. Fluttershy said meekly, "Uh-oh..."
Twilight had also been startled. She knew Luna was well known for her loud voice, but she had no idea that her anger could make it even louder. After shaking off the fear she felt from Luna's anger, she turned to her friends saying, "We have to rescue Celestia and make sure that this time, Nightmare doesn't come back."
Rainbow Dash retorted by saying, "And just how are we supposed to do that without the Elements of Harmony?" Only to get a look of annoyance from Applejack, as she remembered saying, "Oh... Rainbow Power, duh."
Pinkie started twitching like crazy, before calming down and saying, "Uh... guys, something tells me that we're not going to be able to rescue Celestia this time..."
Just as she said that, a newspaper flew into Twilight's face. She pulled it off of her and as she looked at the story on the front page, she gasped, falling to her knees. "No... NOOOOOOOO!" she put her head in her hands, crying.
Her friends tried to calm her down before Applejack picked up the paper and read the story as well and handed it to her friends as they tried to calm Twilight down.
The air grew heavy and the group stood there in silence as they saw the story until Spike broke it saying, "C-Celestia's... dead...?"
