Chapters Discovery and a Dash of Sense
I wake to the sky spinning. There is also wind blowing my hair around, mainly upwards. I start to realize, I am falling. Apart from that, I seem to have longer hair than I remember. There is more coming out from my lower back. Progressively I discover that I was a horse. That didn't make sense, I was very human when I fell asleep. How come I am suddenly tumbling through the sky?
I look around, I see some strange biological structures on either side of my body. They were wings! Horses don't have wings! What am I? I look at my body and hair colors. Something's… off… about them. As a human, I had dark brown hair. Here, my new mane and tail are teal with a stripe of blue. My body was tan-ish, now it's gray. Also, I seem to be a mare, due to my obvious lack of… well… I think you get the point. While I fall, I try to scream for help.
“Aaaaah! HELP ME!” I shout. My voice is higher pitched than I'm used to. I don't think anyone heard me. As I'm having the thought, I see a rainbow streak to my right, closing fast. Someone did hear me after all.
The streak slows down to match my speed and I can see that it's another mare, also with wings. She is cyan with a rainbow mane and tail.
“What do you mean, help you?” She asks in a slightly raspy voice, “Just fly.”
“I-I don't know how…” I say, dumbfounded by this horse, not even, this pony talking, let alone myself.
“What? How? Huh?”
“Please, just save me.” I am barely 800 meters above the ground at this point. The mare mutters something under her breath, then grabs hold of me and slows my fall considerably, stops a meter off the ground, drops me, and then lands herself.
“Okay, who are you? You’re a princess, right? Can you do magic? Why can't you fly?” The barrage of questions gets launched so fast that I only hear the second one.
“I'm a princess?” I ask. The cyan mare mutters once more.
“You certainly look like one. You've got wings and a horn, so…”
“I have a horn? Like, a sheep horn? Goat, maybe?”
“No, a unicorn horn. What, is this your first time being a pony or something?”
I have 2 choices, 1; tell her the truth, or 2; lie like hell and try to get her to believe it. I choose the first one.
“Actually, yes. Normally I'm a human. Where am I?” As I say it, the mare looks at me blankly.
“A human? In Equestria…? AND she's a princess? Aaaauuuggghhh! What in Celestia’s name are you thinking, Rainbow?” She trails off for a while, and eventually comes back to my name. “We can't let you trot around, saying you're a human. I think you need a pony name. How about Blue Sky? Ya know, 'cause you were in a blue sky?”
“Sure…” I respond. I start to think about everything the cyan mare said. She keeps saying stuff about ponies. She also said I have a unicorn horn, and asked me if I could do magic. Do unicorns use magic in this world? And she called the world ‘Equestria.' I have so many questions, but I start with the simplest one. “Who, and what, are you?”
She mutters again, then says, “I'm Rainbow Dash, Pegasus flier, member of the Wonderbolts.”
“Okay, Rainbow Dash it is, then.”
“It was, nice, meeting you, Blue Sky. See ya ‘round! Oh, and find Twilight Sparkle. She looks like you. I'll tell her to come here.” With that, she takes off into the sky.
This rainbow mare seems nice enough, better than my most of my siblings. But now, I'm alone. More alone than I ever have been. Usually I at least have my younger sister. But here, I'm lonely.
I wander around for a bit. Somehow, I manage to walk on two extra legs (even though it is very awkward). Wishing I knew how to fly with my new wings, I see a town in the distance. It looks like a middle ages village. But there's a giant crystalline tree that looks like someone's house.
I start shambling over to the town, when something resembling another horse runs over. I see that they have a marking on their hip, like that rainbow mare, but this one has a purple star where Rainbow Dash had a cloud with a rainbow lightning bolt. I wonder what I have. As I look at my flank I see… nothing. I shrug (as well as a horse can) and focus on the pony rushing at me.
“Hello? Are you…” I search for the name, “Twilight Sparkle, by any chance?”
She stares at me and teleports to right in front of me, jumping me a little. “Hi… yes, I am Twilight Sparkle, but please, just call me Twilight. Now…”
She teleports again, but with me this time. We are in a circular room with roots hanging from the ceiling and a round map table below it.
“You do know you can put your wings away, right?”
I think of what to say, “I-I don't know how.” I realized that I said the same thing to the rainbow mare.
“Who are you? Where did you come from?”
I remember the name Rainbow Dash gave me “I-I know just as much as you do. I was a human before being transported to, wherever it is that we are. I met someone named Rainbow Dash, who gave me the name Blue Sky...” Before I know it, I'm telling her everything.
In response, the mare stares at me, mouth agape. She is nodding occasionally to show that she understands. Sometimes she asks for clarification of somethings she doesn't understand.
“Well, Blue Sky, I completely understand the predicament that you are in. Now do you have any questions for me?”
And boy, did I have questions.
Author's Note
I have lots and lots planned for this story. Also, I think I'm gonna make it past-tense, not current, and third-pony, not first. Anyhow, hope you enjoy it!
Jamie Stark, also known as Blue Sky or Princess Blue Sky, finally was told to go to bed by Twilight Sparkle. That was something he needed. A good night's sleep.
“Allow me to show you to your room, Princess.” It was no wonder she was called the Princess of Friendship. Jamie and Twilight became friends immediately, the fact that he was from another world helped, of course.
“Yeah, yeah…” He yawned in response. Him being tired made his clumsy walking seem natural. The next day, he would ask as much as he could about Equestria and ponies and magic. But for now, he needed sleep.
And he slept. From 7:40 P.M. to 11:50 A.M. to be precise.
“That's sixteen hours and ten minutes!” Twilight stated.
“Really!? I slept that long!? Sorry, Twilight.”
“No worries. Hey, wanna see if you can do magic?” That was unexpected. Surely he couldn't. But he could try. And if he could, than he would actually fit in.
“S-sure!” He said excitedly.
They walked out of the hallway by the guest room, went down the stairs, and opened a door to a large room. There was a table with a few items on it in one corner.
Twilight walked over to it and picked up one of the items with her magic. Jamie gawked in awe.
“It's just simple levitation. The very first spell I learned. Now, follow my instructions. First, focus on the object you want to levitate. Keep in mind that everypony has a carry weight. Mine is only two tons.”
He looked for something on the table to pick up. He decided on a book with a title: Daring Do and the Quest for the Sapphire Statue.
“Alright, now imagine that you have the object floating in front of you. Got that? Next, focus energy on your horn and it should come right over.”
It did so with an auburn colored glow resonating off of it. Twilight cheered, thinking about how much of a natural at magic Jamie is.
Jamie did some experimenting, after he opened his eyes to a book barely a foot from his face. He opened the book. He closed the book. He tossed the book in the air and caught it again. He was pleased with himself. He was starting to not seem crazy to everyone. Then again, nobody else even saw him. Only Rainbow Dash, Twilight, and Spike; Twilight’s dragon.
“You know what? I know just who can help you with your dilemma of being a pony. Plus, she's a unicorn, so she knows some magic.” Twilight said.
“Who would that be?” Jamie ‘Blue Sky’ Stark asked.
“Lyra Heartstrings. She lives just down the road. On 41 East Bit Lane. I think she has a roommate, but I know Lyra and she is, well… interesting, to say the least.”
“Then let's go meet her. She seems interesting enough.” Jamie said.
That's when Jamie found out that ‘just down the road’ to Twilight meant walking for thirty minutes. Jamie's legs were killing him.
When they arrived, a pony with teal skin and light blueish hair (plus a white stripe) answered the door.
“Hiya, Twilight! Who's this?” Lyra asked. She was perhaps a little startled that there were two princesses at the door.
“She is the princess of humans.” Twilight said.
That got Lyra’s attention. “Come on in, guys.” She said casually, ushering them inside.
As she closed the door, she asked if Jamie was really the princess of humans or not. He said no, but he was a human before.
Lyra led them to a study upstairs. Then the now familiar barrage of questions came.
After her inquisitive torrent was over, she knew almost the whole story.
“This is brilliant! I have so many more questions about humans! Twilight, bring him or her, whatever you are, here every day.” She then went to study, some book about human tools as she said, and then Jamie and Twilight left Lyra's home.
They walked out onto the street and started back towards the castle. As they rounded the final bend in the road, just about the whole town jumped out into the path. A poofy pink pony mare shouted 'surprise' and the group of ponies echoed her.
Jamie fainted out of shock, causing everybody there to gasp.
When he woke up, he wasn't in his guest room in Twilight's castle. Every part of the room but the floor was white. It was a pinkish color.
“Oh, you’re awake, Princess… Blue Sky?” Asked a pony mare who walked into the room.
“Yep! That's me! I am a princess! Definitely!” Blue Sky said, suddenly very awake.
“Okay, then. There's a pony here who says she knows you… name of Lyra?”
“Yeah, I know Lyra. Let her in, please?” He ventured. As a human, nobody listened to him. Here, if he's a princess, he might be respected for once.
“Why, yes, Your Majesty!”
The mare walked out of the room into the hall. As she did, she was bowing. ‘This is weird’ he thought. All he could do was wave her out the door. Lyra finally came, after some minutes, and sat in a chair next to him. But the way she sat… it wasn't like how the other ponies had, from what he saw. It looked… familiar. She sat with her back straight, her rear legs draped in front of the chair, and her forelegs were loose by her sides. Most ponies sat like dogs. But Lyra sat like a…
“Human.” Jamie said.
“What about them?” Lyra asked.
“Oh, it's just, well, you see…”
“Ohhh. It's the way I sit, isn't it?” Lyra said “Yeah. Human beings fascinate me, being just the way they are.”
They talked. And talked. And talked. And, guess what? They talked. All the time, they talked about humans. Until Jamie saw that it was 5:30 A.M. and got out of bed and walked out of the building he now knew as the Ponyville Hospital. Then, they talked some more on the way over to Lyra's house, only this time, Jamie was asking the questions.
He learned that Lyra had a roommate (like Twilight thought) who hated Lyra's obsession with humans. Her name was Bon Bon.
Author's Note
I wanted Jamie (Blue Sky) to be, well, awkward, around the ponies. This chapter accomplished that. It also opened the way into the next few chapters. A human being able to use levitation magic and... What? Oh, right! That would be a spoiler! Anyway, hope you enjoy!
Jamie and Lyra went inside. It was chilly out, and they were hungry. Naturally, Jamie didn't turn down the offer of free food.
“Don't tell Bon Bon that you are normally not a pony. In fact, don't mention humans at all. Okay?” Lyra said.
“Alright, my lips are sealed.” Jamie replied.
They entered the house and saw an earth pony rushing around, carrying baking sheets full of cookies and other sweets and candies.
Jamie assumed that it was Bon Bon. Lyra's next statement confirmed his theory.
“Hiya, Bon Bon!” She said, nearly causing the pony to drop the baking sheet she was holding in her teeth. “This is my new friend I was telling you about. The one I picked up from the hospital.”
“Oh, you mean the new princess? I believe your name is Blue Sky?” Bon Bon said.
“Yep. That's me…” Jamie muttered. He was starting to hate these introductions. What's worse is that he genuinely wanted to tell the truth to this pony, but he promised Lyra that he wouldn't.
“He… I mean… she had come by with Twilight the other day. We talked and talked.” Lyra continued. “Whatcha baking?”
“I just finished some caramels, and I'm currently working on some chocolate chip cookies. Just got done my first batch.”
“Great! Can we try some?”
“Sure! Aside from the Cakes at Sugarcube Corner, I am probably the best baker in all of Equestria. And I'm not bragging. I actually had a customer tell me that.”
They tried all of what Bon Bon baked for that day. They had tarts, cakes cookies, pies, caramel apples, gumdrops, and cupcakes. That was the first time Jamie had ever felt full.
Jamie said his goodbyes and left for Twilight's castle. This time he made sure to look around every bend in the path. He didn't want a repeat of last time. He got to the front door and opened it with his newly discovered magic powers.
Twilight was right there waiting for him. With her was Rainbow Dash.
“Hey, Twilight! What are you guys talking about?” Jamie asked.
“Rainbow and I decided that you should learn to fly.” Twilight said.
“Fly!?” Jamie said. “YES YES YES! I really want to learn! When do we start?” If he could do magic, he probably could fly, right?
“Tomorrow, when you're ready. I already told Spitfire you would want to. You are on for trials week.” Rainbow said.
Jamie ran to his room and immediately fell asleep. His sudden departure started the two mares, but he just couldn't wait until tomorrow.
By the morning, he was the first one up. Second was Twi, and third was Rainbow.
“So, where are we going, Rainbow Dash? I can't wait to try my hand… I mean… hoof… at flying!” Jamie said, starting to trot away.
“Woah woah woah, hang on just a sec.” Rainbow said, biting his tail to stop him. “I need to teach you the basics. But then you'll be able to see the Wonderbolts for extra stuff.”
“Oh, okay!” He said as he turned around back towards them. Rainbow and Twilight glanced at each other as if saying ‘he's getting used to this quickly,’ but no words were spoken of.
Rainbow Dash and Jamie said their farewells to Twilight and walked over into a nice natural clearing in the Whitetail Woods.
“Okay, first, extend your wings and brace yourself to take off.” Rainbow instructed. As she said the sentence, she did it herself.
Jamie did as he was told and shown. He really just wanted to leap into the air, and flap his wings. He told Rainbow this and she said:
“If you think that it's a good idea, go ahead.”
This caused a worm of doubt to grow in the back of his mind, yet excitement won over uncertainty. He leapt into the sky, flapped his wings, and fell on his muzzle. Rainbow Dash lost it.
“Bwaa-ha-ha ah-ah-ha!” She laughed. “You really don't know how to fly, do you.”
All Jamie could reply with was a low groan of pain, making her laugh even harder and louder.
After numerous attempts (and face plants) Rainbow Dash deemed Jamie a steady enough flyer for the Wonderbolts. He was giddy with excitement once again.
This time, what fixed his mood was not another face plant, but a yellowish pony with gold and orange hair who has a weird obsession with always wearing sunglasses. Her name is Spitfire.
It was the first day in trials week. Jamie was getting crushed by the pressure of Spitfire’s gaze down the row of cadets.
“Alright, ponies. Think you’ve got what it takes to be an elite flyer?” She said.
“YES MA'AM!” The assembled pegasi said.
“Well then, let me be the first to tell you. YOU DON'T! If you had what it takes to be an elite flyer, you'd already BE a Wonderbolt! Still feel like you're hot stuff?” She asked of an unfortunate pegasus next to Jamie.
“No, ma'am.” The stallion said.
“Now that that's settled, Listen here, newbies!” Spitfire continued. “We've got the honor of having a princess here today. Now, that doesn't mean that I will be giving her special privileges. She will train just as hard as the rest of you. Do I make myself CLEAR?”
“YES MA'AM!” The recruits all said.
“Good. Now GET UP THERE and GIVE ME TWENTY!” She said, blowing her whistle to enforce the command. Talking to Rainbow, she said, “You think she's got what it takes?”
“Are you kidding? Of course he… ah… she… does.” Rainbow replied coolly. “She's like me, but about twenty percent less cool.”
After they finished their laps, the Wonderbolts watching them handed formal cadet uniforms to them and they were told they'd get ten minutes to put them on and come back out of the locker rooms.
As they were flying in, Jamie saw a weird spinning wheel of some sort. All Rainbow Dash would say when he asked was that he'd find out. And in ten minutes, he did.
“Wonderbolts are the fastest, best precision flyers in the world.” Spitfire said. “But spin-outs can still happen. And when they do, the Wonderbolt needs to be able to recover quickly.” She gestured to the wheel. “This… is the Dizzitron. It's gonna make you very, I repeat, VERY dizzy. Your task is to try and recover then fly straight. Once you've recovered, you must come In for a smooth landing. Now, who's first?”
Author's Note
I wanted a chance to incorporate Spitfire into the story. So this chapter was born. Let me know what you think. I'm always open to criticism as well as flattery. Also next chapter might have some animals in it.
