"Six... seven... eight... nine... TEN!"
The gray pegasus placed ten freshly baked muffins into a basket, stacking them into a pyramid. They were varied in flavor; banana nut, blueberry, pumpernickel, etc. The reason for that, was because she didn't know what kind of muffin he liked- if he even liked muffins at all.
She bent down to grasp the basket's handle in her mouth, but missed and knocked it over instead. She grunted in frustration, her googley-eyed-ness once again causing problems. She focused, and each yellow orb steadily went into place and faced forward. She cleaned up the mess, put the muffins back into position, and proceeded to pick up the basket.
She did so, and her eyeballs went back to their usual derpyness. She found her way to the door, and took flight. It wasn't easy to navigate when each eye was pointing in a different direction, but she always somehow managed. She was so busy looking for directions with her left, that she didn't notice the flower stand coming up in her right view.
CRASH!!!
The stand was knocked right down, its contents spilling out all over the grass. Flower pots shattered, and bags of fertilizer burst open upon hitting the ground. Luckily, the muffins survived the impact. She took flight again, quickly stammering out an apology to the angry equine florists.
This time she flew higher up, her purpose being to avoid any more collisions. This didn't work however-
"HEY!"
"Watch it!"
"Ow! Careful!" She had run into several other pegasi, many of which on cloud placing duty. Even more bad news was, her erratic flying managed to poof away one or two. "Sorry my bad", she called out as she continued on her way.
She eventually got her destination, clumsily landing on that special stallion's doorstop. She folded up her wings, straightened up her back, and rapped on the door with her hoof.
"Just a moment", came his dazzling British accent from the other side. At last the door opened, and there he stood. He was wearing his striped scarf and his mane had recently been neatly brushed. "Oh, why hello there Miss Ditzy Doo."
"Oh no", replied Derpy with a sheepish blush, "you can just call me Derpy. Everpony does. It's because of my eyeballs."
"Well", he said with a chuckle, "if you insist."
He was about to say something else, but he instead wrinkled his nose and covered it with his hoof. "My word Derpy, have you been rolling about in manure?"
"Uh no... see, I kind of crashed into a flower stand and got covered in fertilizer. Sorry."
"Er... be right back." The door slammed, and when it reopened he was wearing a clothes pin on his muzzle to close his nostrils. "Well, this certainly makes things a bit easier. Please, come inside. Allons-y!"
He led her into his home, and her ears pricked up at the sound of ticking clocks and the grinding of gears. They sat down at a table, Derpy setting the basket down on top of it. "So what brings you here?"
"Oh I made some muffins, but it turned out I had extra so why not let you have them", Derpy quickly blurted out, nervously rubbing her front hooves together. "That so?" He eyed the basket, licking his chops eagerly. "Ooh thank you!"
He pulled out a banana nut, and took a bite. "Mmm, banana nut. Bananas are an excellent source of potassium, did you know? Always take one to a party I say." As he ate, Derpy just stared at him with a light tinge of pink beginning to cover her muzzle. "So uh... do you like the muffins?"
"Like them? Why these are amazing!"
Her pink blush deepened, now a shade of scarlet. "R-really? I was so worried that I mixed up the salt and sugar again... My eyeballs can sometimes make it hard to read, so not all of my hopes were up."
"Well you didn't,and they turned out FANTASTIC!"
"Thanks doc..."
They just sat there for a while in an awkward silence, Derpy's thoughts racing around in her head like a roadrunner. Well, she had given him the muffins and now here they were, sitting together. She had planned on this, the delivery and all, but didn't think about what would happen after that. What was she supposed to say?! She continued to rub her front hooves together in a sheepish manner, trying t think of a conversation topic.
"So... us Pegasi did a good job with the weather, eh?"
"I suppose so. I hear there's a rainstorm scheduled for this afternoon, so I might stay inside today."
"Don't worry, it'll just be a few small sprinkles- you know, to water the flowers!"
"Oh. I see."
More awkward silence, and Derpy was mentally screaming. The whole point of this visit was to see the doctor, and find a way to comfortably express her feelings. She opened her mouth the speak, but the brown stallion stood up and adjusted his bowtie. "Well, so sorry but I have some clock repairs at town hall I need to do. I meant to do them yesterday but I caught up. It was nice seeing you today", he said with a friendly smile before turning around and beginning to walk away. This was it. It was now or never.
"Doctor?" He turned to face her, cocking an eyebrow. "Yes?"
"Errr... the reason why I came... the real reason... it's... uh..." It suddenly felt as if her throat was being constricted, sweat dripping from her brow. "Miss Derpy, are you alri-"
"ILIKEYOUNOTASAFRIENDIREALLYLIKEYOUANDIWASTOONEVEROUSTOSAYANYTHINGI'MSOSORRYTHEMUFFINSWEREJUSTANEXCUSE-"
"Whoa whoa whoa", he stammered, gently placing a hoof on her mouth to hush her.
It took him a moment to process what she had said, and when he did he became flushed as well. "Oh... oh my..." He walked back to the table, lifting her chin with his hoof. "Derpy... is this true?"
"Y-yeah... i-is that okay...?" Good thing for her wall-eyed-ness, because at the moment she didn't really want to make eye contact. Doctor Whooves seemed taken aback. "Okay? Why would you ask something like that?"
"It's just... I didn't know if you'd be okay with me like-liking you or not... so is it... you know... alright?"
"Of course! I'm not upset. Just... surprised."
Well, it felt like a weight had been lifted off of her chest, which was a welcome change. Even better, he didn't seem bothered by her feelings. But this was the thing- did he like her back? "So... you wanna head on down to Sugarcube Corner when you're done doing the clock repairs? I'll pay for it and everything!" Doctor Whooves smiled warmly. "That sounds delightful! I should be able to meet you there at around seven pm or so."
"Yay! Thankyouthankyou!"
She threw her front legs around him, enveloping him in a hug. It was a dream come true- going out to eat with him for fun, not because she messed up some wedding invitations.
"So", he said after she stopped hugging him, "since we're going out, and you have... feelings, is this... a date?" Uh oh. Now Derpy's fae was burning up again. "Er... do you want it to be? It doesn't have to be if it's not ok with you... we can get some ice cream and pop right out..."
"No no no it's fine..."
Now he was the one acting nervous, scratching the back of his head with his hoof. "You feeling alright, Doc?"
"Yes, it's just I've never exactly been in this situation before... but I suppose there's a first time for everything! Now I really must go and do those repairs at town hall, or else the mayor will rip me a brand new plot..."
He gathered up his tool box, then opened up his door. But just before he left, he trotted over to the gray pegasus- and gave her a peck on the cheek. "I'll be seeing you, miss Derpy." He removed the clothing pin (to make himself look more presentable for the mayor), and just as he was in the doorway- "and before our little rendezvous, please PLEASE take a shower", he said with a laugh.
They exited the building, and the doctor was off to his appointment while Derpy stood there in a daze. Did he just... kiss her on the cheek? Maybe this wasn't going to just be lunch with a friend after all. She was filled with giddiness, and with a whoop she took flight, not caring when she crashed into objects. She had done it. She had managed to confess, and now she had even gotten to ask him out on a date. She was no psychic, but she had a feeling that this was going to be her best day ever.

It might be a bit obvious, but my all-time favorite background pony is Derpy. 
Yeah, I also have this fun little headcanon that her real name is Ditzy Doo but the residents of Ponyville gave her the nickname Derpy because her wall-eyed-ness.
I'm a really big fan of this ship, in fact it's my favorite background pony shipping.
I hope this story wasn't too dopey, especially at the ending. I'm not very good at writing fluff, so this was good practice. Even if this isn't a very good story, at least I finally got something done.
I'm also not entirely happy with the story's title, but I honestly couldn't think of anything else to call it- I'm open to suggestions in the comment section though. It's also about time I posted a story that wasn't fetish or clop (that puts me at 3 stories total at the moment)
