Chapters Chapter I - Nothing to be Concerned About?
Jackboot never saw himself as anything special, despite what others have told him. He was a chocolate maned stallion with a gray pelt and a pair of blue eyes. His cutie mark was that of a hammer striking an anvil, of which he had gotten after helping his father complete a big, urgent order at his father’s metal shop. Still just fresh out of graduating from Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns, he lives with his parents, Emerald Button and Iron Girder, in Canterlot, but has sworn to save up enough bits to find a place of his own. The Iron family has defined themselves by their strong work ethic, sense of self-reliance, and a firm mindset of individuality. Jackboot may have inherited these three aspects from his family; there is one he has barely grasped. Social skills.
Jackboot may have been an excellent student in school; he has never been that good at making friends. He was that one colt that was in the corner of the schoolyard with his muzzle in a book. Celestia at one point said that he reminded her of her student, Twilight Sparkle. His parents have tried many things but nothing could get Jackboot out of his shell. The closest he ever came to friends were a group of “cool” fillies and colts during his days of elementary school, which didn’t end well in the end, and caused Jackboot to go further into his shell. Now working at his father’s metal company in Canterlot, Jackboot couldn’t find actual time to make friends. That is until one day, he is sent to a small town called Ponyville.
The workshop of the Canterlot Metal Shoppe and Forge was alive with activity. Earth ponies were banging away at metal with hammers while unicorns were welding. Jackboot was one of these unicorns, blasting away with his horn in the process of forging an order of horse shoes, while the other employees were working on other orders. Horse shoes have begun to come into fashion with many teenaged fillies and young mares, so they were in high demand. While his father, Iron Girder, was shaping the shoes themselves, Jackboot’s job was to carve the grooves and holes for the nails. Iron Girder’s hide was a darker shade of gray with a black mane, red eyes, and the image of an, well, iron girder, as his cutie mark.
“Last one!” His father shouted with relief has he set down the hammer. “Thank Celestia!”
“You’re telling me.” Jackboot said as he blew on his horn.
Jackboot then put the last horseshoe in one of the boxes, which held two dozen shoes per box.
“What’s next on the agenda?”
“Well we need to get all these shoes delivered and then we can break for lunch.” His father explained as he removed his leather apron, revealing a brown vest. Everypony who worked at the Canterlot Metal Shoppe was required to wear this as a uniform.
He then turned to the other work ponies.
“Can you all take care of things from here?”
“Don’t worry, we got it!” One of them said. An Unicorn named Ballpin. He was white with a short blonde and tail, violet eyes, and a cutie mark which consisted of a ball pin with a brown handle and wore a red bandana around his neck.
“Good.” Iron said. “Come on, Jackboot. Can’t waste time.”
“Right behind you, father.”
Jackboot removed his apron, revealing his brown vest. Unlike the others, his vest had a golden pocket watch in one of the pockets.
After grabbing a cloth cap on their way out, the two stallions loaded all forty boxes of horse shoes onto the store’s delivery wagon. Iron then hitched himself while Jackboot sat on the seat with a clip board in hoof.
“Where do we start, son?”
Jackboot looked at the clipboard.
“Our first stop is A Filly’s World.”
“Very well then, hold on tight!”
The workroom of The Pin Cushion boutique was filled with the sound of a sewing machine going at full speed. At the helm was a mare named Emerald Button. She had a green pelt, a puffy green mane a tail with pink streaks, silver eyes, and a cutie mark that consisted of a needle a thread next to two green buttons. She also wore a red ascot on around her neck.
She was currently working on a commission for a well-known mare by the name of Fleur Dis Lee. The commission in question was a light pink dress that had white frills around the short sleeves with a white popped up collar. The dress is to be worn at the annual Grand Galloping Gala that is to take place next spring. When asked why the commission was asked for so early, Fleur merely answered that it is best to plan ahead.
“And finished!”
Emerald took her hoof off of the peddle and stood up. She then used her magic to lift up the dress to take a firm look at it for any abnormalities.
“Absolutely, perfect!” She said enthusiastically. “Good job Emerald. Why thank you.”
After a good chuckle she set the dress up on one of the mannequins in the room.
“Now what else.”
She then brought over a clip board from the desk.
“Okay, I repaired that blazer for Miss Harshwhinny; she picked it up earlier, Upper Crust’s order of sweaters is complete, Golden Gavel is happy with the suits I had made for him, Blue Moon and Chocolate Sun’s commissions are finished, the cuffs on Royal Pin’s jacket are restored (Is his cutie mark an hourglass or a safety pin? Anyway…), Swan Song’s hat is now in better condition, and Fleur Dis Lee’s dress is now finished.”
She then looked around.
“It appears I’m completely caught up.” She said. “Now to wait for Iron and Jack to get here so we can go for lunch. What should I do till then?”
Her answered was met with the sound of the bell at the front entrance caught her attention.
“Be right there!”
She then set the clip board down, checked herself over in the mirror, and walked out into the show room.
“Welcome to the Pin Cushion!” She said as she approached the front counter. She sounded almost mechanical while she said that, evidence of how long she had said these words. “What can I do for… …oh, hello Perfect Pace.”
The pony she was addressing was a blue Earth Pony stallion with a stylized blonde mane and tail, golden eyes, and an hourglass for a cutiemark. She was very familiar with this stallion as he is one of the brother of one of her husband’s co-workers, Ballpin, and was the coltfriend of her niece, Sophisticata.
“And hello to you, Miss Button.” Perfect Pace said in a gentlemanly matter. “I must say, you look lovely today. That’s not surprising.”
Emerald chuckled.
“Thank you, Perfect, you’re looking good as well.” She said. “Anyway, is there anything I can help you with?”
“I am merely here to pick up Sophie’s dress.” He said, using his marefriend’s nickname. “I assume it is ready now?”
“You assumed correct.” Emerald answered. “I’ll be back in a moment.”
Emerald trotted to the backroom and returned in what actually felt like a moment like she said.
“Here we are.” She said as she set the large box down on the counter. She then punched in buttons into the cash register. “That will be a total of fifty five bits.”
Perfect retrieved several bits from his pocket. Two of them were twenty five bit coins while the third was a ten bit coin.
“And please keep the change.”
“Why thank you.” Emerald said. “What was the dress for exactly? I think Sophie told me, but I had forgotten.”
“It is for when we go to the Summer Sun Celebration.”
“Oh the Summer Sun Celebration.” The green mare said reminiscently. “I absolutely love watching Celestia raise the sun!”
“I agree it is a site to see.” Perfect said. “Anyway, I’m meeting Sophie for lunch over at the cake plate.”
Emerald’s mind clicked.
“That’s actually where I’m going to have lunch with Iron and Jack.” She said. “How about we all eat together?”
“Good idea, I’ll see you there.”
Perfect Pace then left the shop with the box, leaving Emerald alone.
“What else is there to do?”
As Emerald walked into the back, the bell at the entrance rang again. Sighing, Emerald returned to the show room.
“Welcome to the Pin Cushion!” She said. “How can I help you?”
She saw that the newcomer was a delivery pony.
“I have a delivery for ya.” The delivery stallion answered, presenting Emerald with a clip board and pen. “Sign here please.”
Emerald performed the ritual and returned the clipboard and pen.
“Thank you very much; I’ll just bring in the boxes.”
“Boxes?” Emerald asked herself. “What did I order?”
The delivery pony brought in four boxes on a hooftruck and then put the boxes on the counter.
“Have a good one.”
The delivery pony was then gone as quickly as he came.
“What are these?”
Emerald then took hold of a box cutter and opened one of the brown packages. Upon looking into the box, she was surprised by the contents.
“Ribbon?” She asked with surprise. She then picked up one of the large spools of brightly colored fabric. “When did I order this?”
She then took hold of the box and looked at the delivery address.
“Where is the Carousel Boutique?”
“The Carousel Boutique? Yeah, I’m familiar with it.”
At one table at the Cake Plate Café sat Emerald, Iron, Jackboot, Perfect Pace, and Sophisticata. Sophisticata was a light green unicorn mare with light orange yes, a brown mane that was tied in a bun, and a cutie mark that consisted of a golden star within a white circle.
“It’s over in Ponyville. The delivery company must’ve really messed up.”
“You can say that again.” Emerald said. “Now I need to spend a bunch of bits to get it forwarded so this Rarity mare can get package.”
“Rarity, that’s a nice name.” Iron said. “What do you think Jack?”
Iron turned to his son and saw that his head was in a book. A book that he didn’t recognize.
“Watcha reading, son?”
That’s when Jackboot looked up from the book.
“I’m sorry, what were you saying?”
“I was asking what you were reading.”
Jackboot then booked marked the page he left off and handed it to his father. Iron skimmed through the book, careful not to cause the bookmark to fall out.
“It’s about Predictions and Prophecies.” Jack explained. “I thought I’d have a look when I read about the Elements of Harmony the other day.”
Almost everypony at the table cocked an eyebrow.
“I’m sorry, the what now?” Iron asked.
Jack sighed. His horn glowed, causing a book to materialize. He then opened the book to a bookmarked page before laying it on the table for all to see.
“The Elements of Harmony.” Jack explained. “The elements represent Laughter, Generosity, Kindness, Loyalty, Honesty, and Magic. All of these were used to banish Nightmare Moon one thousand years ago.”
Perfect Pace looked over the page in the book.
“That is interesting.” He said. “But what does that have to do with the other book you were reading?”
“Simple…”
Jack then made the book on the Elements disappear before returning attention to the other book.
“…since Celestia used the Elements to banish Nightmare Moon to, well, the moon…” Jack continued as he opened the other book to the bookmarked page. “…that is what led to the creation of the so-called ‘story’ of the ‘Mare in the Moon’. Have a look.”
Everypony looked at the page.
“The Mare in the Moon…” Sophie read aloud. “…myth from olden Pony times. A powerful pony wanted to rule Equestria. Defeated by the Elements of Harmony and imprisoned in the moon. Legend has it that one the longest day of the thousandth year, the stars will aid in her escape and she will bring about night time eternal.”
“This is interesting and all…” Emerald said. “…but why are you so interested in this all of a sudden.”
“The longest day on the thousandth year.” Jack said, repeating what was said from the book. “It’s the day after tomorrow.”
That’s when it clicked in everypony’s heads.
“That’s the day of the Summer Sun Celebration.” Iron said. “You think that something bad might happen?”
“Not just something, father.” Jack said. “The return of Nightmare Moon.”
“If it concerns you so much, why not just send a letter to your grand…” Pace paused before continuing. “…I mean, the Princess?”
“I already did, but I’ve yet to get a reply.” Jack answer before taking a sip of his water. “Hopefully she’ll take some sort of precaution.”
Almost on que, a pegasus guard trotted into the café. The ponies at the table watched the guard. It wasn’t often they’d see one of them out in the open unless it is something important. The white stallion approached the unicorn mare working at the counter and handed her a small scroll and told her something that was inaudible from where Jack and his family were sitting. It almost looked like the guard glanced over to them before leaving.
The mare from the counter trotted over to the table. This mare’s name was Frosted Cookie. Her hide was a chocolate brown with green eyes and a mane and tail with white and light blue stripes that almost looked like frosting. Her cutie mark was a piping bag making a line of frosting. If her mane wasn’t stylized like it was, she would look similar to Celestia’s student, Twilight Sparkle.
“Hey Irons, everything okay over here?” The brown mare asked. After everyone said yes, she continued. “That’s good. Anyway, this scroll came to Jack. With the seal on the ribbon, it looks really important.”
“Thank you, Cookie.” Jack said, taking the scroll with his magic.
“Is anything I can get for any of you?” Cookie asked. “Refills?”
“We’re good, thank you.” Iron said to Cookie, who smiled and left to grab their check.
“Aww, you’ve got to be kidding me!” Jack said suddenly, causing everypony at the table to turn.
“What is it, Jack?” Sophie asked.
“Have a look.”
Jack passed his cousin the scrolled.
“My dear Jackboot…” Sophie said, reading the scroll aloud. “…I have received your letter and had taken care to look it over. I must say that you mustn't listen to some old stories you find in a book. You must understand that there is much more to living than having your head in a book. I can assure you that nothing bad will happen. Thank you for writing to me, and I hope to see you again soon. Signed, Princess Celestia.”
Sophie rolled up the scroll and returned it to her cousin.
“I guess she thinks things will be okay. Besides, she’s the most powerful being in the land, she’ll be fine.”
“Yeah.” Jack said, with uncertainly. “But I just can’t shake the feeling that something might happen.”
“What might happen?”
They all turned and saw a white unicorn with a short red mane and tail, the same color as copper, green eyes, and a cutie mark that consisted of a kettle with a flame coming out of the spout.
“Oh, hello Hot Kettle.” Iron said. “We were just discussing the Summer Sun Celebration.”
“Oh yes, the SSC. Cookie and I have thought about going.” Hot Kettle said as he set the check down on the table. “Our folks said we could after we complete these cake orders later. We keep telling them that Cookie and I will get it done, but they’re very insistent that they’ll come down here and see to it themselves.”
Suddenly, Hot Kettle felt a hoof being planted on his shoulder. He looked and saw that the hoof belonged to Jack.
“Jack, what…?”
“Hot Kettle you’re a genius.” Jack said, confusing the baker. “If Celestia won’t see to it, I shall see to it myself! Tomorrow I will set hoof into Ponyville! It’s the perfect plan!”
Before anypony could say anything, Emerald spoke up.
“That’s a good idea Jack. In fact, Sophie and Perfect are going tomorrow as well.” She said, drawing a nod from the couple. “Maybe while you’re there you can deliver those packages that came to me by mistake. Might as well kill two birds with a single stone.”
“Perfect idea!” Jack said as he got up from his seat. “If you all will excuse me, I have some planning to do!”
Iron turned to his wife after watching his son run from the table with a spring in his step.
“Don’t you think you’re being rash in encouraging this?” He asked. “He’s getting all hot and bothered by an old pony’s tale.”
Emerald took a drink from her drink.
“You see, if I let him do this, he will be out and about.” She explained. “And if he is out and about, he won’t have his muzzle stuck in a book and might actually make some friends. It’s the perfect plan.”
Iron thought for a moment.
“You know…” He said as he put a foreleg around his wife.. “…I’m reminded of why I married you.”

Hello everyone! I hope you all enjoyed the chapter and see you next time!
Chapter II - Welcome to Ponyville
The train clattered down the tracks toward the town of Ponyville. Sat in one of the seats was Jackboot, and with him were his cousin, Sophisticata and her coltfriend, Perfect Pace. Actually, he was with them. The couple was on their way to Ponyville for the Summer Sun Celebration that was set to take place there. Jackboot’s reasoning for tagging along with them was that the day before, he had come to a shocking realization that, according to a book on Predictions and Prophecies, more specifically about a story called “The Mare in the Moon”, for told that Nightmare Moon would return on the longest day of the thousandth year. He had voiced his concern to the Princess herself, but only gotten a response saying that it was merely a story.
As a result, Jackboot decided to take matters into his own hooves and was on his way to Ponyville to, in any way possible, prevent what was bound to happen, or in the very least to see what will happen. But that wasn’t his only goal in Ponyville as he had to deliver some packages to a mare named Rarity, due that her packages had arrived at his mother’s boutique by mistake.
The train finally came to a screeching halt at the train station.
“Ponyville!” The conductor shouted. “All out for Ponyville!”
Had Jackboot had not have been restrained as he was, he would’ve knocked several ponies out of the way. But thankfully he didn’t, but casually used his magic to levitate the four boxes along with his suitcase. He was dressed differently as he was wearing a brown suit jacket with the chain of his pocket watch visible, white shirt with cuffs with black buttons, a red bow tie, and a straw boater hat with a red and black ribbon.
“Such a lovely town!” Sophisticata said. “Where’d you say the Inn was again?”
“I think it is several blocks down to the right.” Perfect Pace explained, carrying their suitcase on his back. “Then we’ll just need to keep an eye out for a sign that says ‘Soft Pillow’s Bed and Breakfast’.”
“Sounds good.” Jack said. “After we get signed in I’ll drop these boxes off.”
Suddenly Jack’s suitcase was surrounded in a pale green aura and was taken from him. He looked and saw that it was Sophie.
“We’ll take care of your suitcase, Jack.” Sophie said. “You go on ahead.”
“Seriously?”
The couple nodded.
“We’ll just go around and see the sights and meet up at Town Hall around say, two o’ clock.” Perfect explained. “And then we’ll go over to this place he heard about called, ‘Sugercube Corner’ for lunch.”
The two parties then agreed and went their separate ways. Jackboot made his way down one street away from the train station. He looked around as he trotted down the street, until he finally came to a stop and look around.
“Where is the Carousel Boutique?”
“I worry about him sometimes.”
Sophie and Perfect were now in their room at the Bed and Breakfast. Fortunately, the two had their own room while Jack had one of his own. While unpacking and sorting their clothes, Sophie couldn’t help but think about her cousin.
“What’s there to worry about?” Perfect asked as he shut the dresser drawer. “He’s grown stallion who has a formal education, a well-paying job, and has the determination to complete tasks given to him. He seems to be doing well. If you ask me, there isn’t really any problem.”
“I know that much.” Sophie said as she approached the door. “Come on, we’ll talk on the way out.” Perfect then followed his marefriend out of the room, locking the door behind him. “Where was I? Oh right, anyway, that isn’t what I’m worried about.”
“Then what is it?” Prefect asked as the two made their way down the hall toward the front entrance.
“It’s his social skills I have an issue with.”
“I see.” Perfect nodded. “But doesn’t he talk to ponies every day at work?”
“Yes, but that’s not what I’m talking about.” Sophie said. “He’s pretty much required to talk to ponies when it comes to his job. I’m referring to when he isn’t working. He’s either at the library or at the park by himself with his muzzle in a book.”
“Reading is good, isn’t it?” Perfect asked as the two stepped out into the sunlight. “But, I do understand your concern. But don’t think you might be worrying a little too much?”
Sophie stopped, causing Perfect to do the same.
“I know.” She said with a sigh. “With having gone to school with him before he got into Celestia’s School, you’d know why I’m so concerned.”
Perfect put a hoof on Sophie’s shoulder.
“Worrying about it isn’t going to solve it.” He said. “Besides, this whole Nightmare Moon thing might actually help him out. Why do think your Aunt encouraged him?”
Sophie smiled.
“You’re right.” She said. “And those packages that my Aunt received might help as well. As far as we know, meeting this Rarity mare might help.”
“That’s the mare I know!” He said. He then kissed her on the cheek. “Now come on, let’s go and see what this fine little town has to offer.”
“Alright, maybe I should have gotten a map.”
Jackboot trotted through the streets of Ponyville, caring the four packages. It had been almost half an hour since he parted with Sophie and Perfect and he had yet to have found the Carousel Boutique. Right now he contemplated doing something he had tried to avoid: Asking for directions.
“Maybe I could ask somepony for help.” He said as he looked around at ponies that were trotting here and there. “”But I don’t want to bother them.” He then looked at the packages. “But I do need to get packages delivered.”
He looked around again and caught sight of two mares. One was a light green unicorn with a lyre for her cutie mark, while the other was a beige earth pony with three wrapped candies as her cutie mark. Jack thought they were rather pretty, but that was not important.
“I have to ask somepony.” He thought with a shrug. “Might as well be them.”
He trotted toward the mares.
“Excuse me, ladies.”
The two mares looked over and smiled.
“Hi, there.” The earth pony said. “Can we help you?”
“Yes, I was wondering…”
Before he could fully answer the earth pony, the unicorn let out a gasp, catching Jackboot off guard.
“Jackboot?” She asked. “Jackboot, is it really you?”
Jackboot cocked an eyebrow.
“I’m sorry, have we met?” He asked.
“It’s me, Lyra!” The unicorn said joyfully. “Remember, from Celestia’s school?”
Jackboot thought for a moment until it clicked.
“Okay, now I remember you now.” He said as he set the packages down. “You’re that mare who kept talking about those human…”
Lyra then interrupted the stallion by pulling him into a hug, catching him off guard. He then returned the hug before the two parted.
“So how have you been?” Lyra asked. “I haven’t seen you since we graduated!”
“I’ve been working at father’s metal shop.” Jackboot explained. “How have you been?”
“I’ve been doing alright.” Lyra said. She then looked over at her companion. “Oh, where are my manners?” He then put a front leg over the earth pony and pulled her close. “This is my best friend, Bon Bon.”
Bon Bon then extended a leg, of which Jackboot shook.
“Nice to meet you, miss.” He said.
“You too, Jackboot.” Bon Bon said. “What brings you to Ponyville? Are you here for the Summer Sun Celebration?”
Jackboot was about to answer but noticed the packages.
“Well, yes.” He then levitated the packages. “And I am here to deliver these packages. They accidently came to my mother’s boutique by accident. Do you know where I can find a mare named Rarity and where her business is located?”
“Yeah, follow us.” The Lyra said, waving for the stallion to follow.
Jackboot followed the two mares through the streets of Ponyville, which were busy with activity.
“So, Jackboot. I was hoping I would see you yesterday at Moondancer’s birthday party.” Lyra said as the three trotted. “Were you busy?”
“I was helping my father with a large order yesterday, so I couldn’t go.” Jackboot said. “I did mail her my gift ahead of time. Did she receive it? It was a typewriter I restored.”
“Yeah, she told me she loved it.” Lyra said. “She wished she could have thanked you herself.”
“Well, I’m just glad she likes it.” Jackboot said as he looked around. “I…”
“Here we are!” Lyra said. “Carousel Boutique!”
Jackboot looked and saw that they had arrived at a rather festive looking building. It was tall and had the appearance of a carousel, which made the name a tad obvious but also gave the business some identity.
“I thank you two for showing me the way.” He said.
“It’s no problem.” Bon Bon said. “Will you be there when Celestia raises the sun?”
“I will, yes.” Jackboot answer. He would have told them about Nightmare Moon’s possible return, but it was unlikely that they would believe him.
“Then we’ll see you then.” Lyra said before pulling Jackboot into another hug. “Again, it’s great seeing you again!”
“And you as well.”
Lyra then let go and left with Bon Bon.
Jackboot then turned to the building in front of him.
“Alright, let’s get these packages delivered.”
Jackboot opened the door and entered the shop, welcomed by the frilly interior.
“Hello?” He said. “Is somepony here?”
“Coming!” Somepony answered from another room.
Jackboot heard hoof steps coming from the stairs, assuming that this pony is Rarity, the mare he heard so much about. Upon seeing who came down the stairs, it seemed that for Jackboot, time slowed to a complete halt as her hooves made contact with the floor. Time may have stopped, but Jackboot’s heart didn’t get the message. At this point, one wouldn’t need a stethoscope to see how high his heart rate was as he saw the pony’s perfectly styled, indigo mane bounced as the mare strode across the floor.
“Welcome to Carousel Boutique.” She said as she approached. “How can I help…?” The mare then gasped. “Oh my Celestia!”
She then trotted toward Jackboot. Suddenly time fast forwarded.
“I absolutely love your outfit!” She said as she looked up and down the stallion with the twin sapphires that were her eyes that glistened in the light. “I must know who designed it. Can you give be the ponies name?”
Jackboot didn’t know what to say at this point. The most beautiful mare he’s ever seen, with a voice that rivaled the best musicians in the kingdom, was a foot away from his face.
Suddenly, the mare produced a look of concern.
“Are you alright?”
Finally Jackboot snapped out of it.
“Oh, yes!” Jackboot said, unintentionally answering loudly. “I’m sorry, what were you asking?”
“I was asking who designed your outfit. It’s absolutely lovely!”
Seeing that mares smile made Jackboot almost melt. But he didn’t want to melt just yet, as he had to answer her question.
“Actually, I designed them.” He finally answered.
The mare’s eyes almost popped out of her head upon hearing his answer.
“You made them?”
“Yes, ma’am.” Jackboot said. “Even the hat.”
“That’s incredible.” She said. “I must say, you and I will get along perfectly.”
She then stuck her hoof out.
“I’m Rarity.”
Jackboot shook her hoof as gently as he could.
“Jackboot.” He said. “It’s nice to meet you ma’am.”
Rarity’s smile almost made Jackboot melt yet again. This was the mare that he was looking for and now, looking at her, he might as well be delivering packages to a Princess of a foreign land.
Oh right, the packages.
“I also have these packages for you.” Jackboot said as he brought Rarity’s attention to them. “They accidently arrived at my mother’s boutique so I brought them here.”
“That is very kind of you, darling.”
Darling. That word alone made Jackboot’s heart go further into overdrive as Rarity took hold of the packages.
“Oh good, it’s the ribbon I ordered!” Rarity said after opening one of the packages. “Thank you again for bringing this to me.”
“What is all the ribbon for, exactly?” Jackboot asked.
“I am using it to decorate town hall for the Celebration.” Rarity explained. “By the way, where is your mother’s boutique?”
“It is in Canterlot.” Jackboot answered. “It…”
Rarity let a loud gasp.
“You’re from Canterlot?!” She asked. “I am absolutely envious of you! The glamour, the sophistication, it has been my dream to live there!”
Jackboot’s heart rate slowed down as he mentally face hoofed.
“Oh no, she’s one of those ponies!” He thought as Rarity went on about Canterlot. “She’s in for a big surprise when she somehow finds her way there.”
“You and I will most certainly get along.” Rarity said gleefully. “Now tell me, what’s it like living in such a place?”
Jackboot thought that he was the last pony to ask about Canterlot life. A quiet, metal-pounding, shut in and she was asking him? He needed a way out and then saw the boxes of ribbon.
“Don’t you think you should get that ribbon set up?” He asked. “You know, so you’re not late for the Celebration?”
Rarity thought for a moment.
“You’re right.” She said as she took hold one of the packages. “And again, I thank you so much, darling. I hope to see you again.”
Just before Rarity could make her way toward the door, a thought came to Jackboot’s mind.
“That might take a while to decorate town hall.” He thought. “She may be naïve about living the upper-class life. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve help.”
He then made up his mind.
“Excuse me, Miss Rarity?”
“For a country town it’s bigger on the inside than on the outside.”
Sophie and Perfect trotted their way down the street.
“You can say that again.” Perfect said, agreeing with his marefriend. “It feels like we’ve been through this street already.”
As the pair walked, they spotted a pony walking that looked rather familiar. She was a light purple unicorn with a purple mane and tail with a pink and dark purple line through them. She was a followed by, to their surprise, a small purple and green dragon carrying a piece of paper.
Sophie recognized her immediately.
“Twilight!” She called over as she waved her hoof frantically. “Twilight Sparkle, over here!”
The unicorn looked over and saw Sophie waving and approached with the dragon in toe.
“Hi, Sophie.” Twilight said. “I haven’t seen you in a… …whoa!”
Twilight then found herself in a tight hug from the brown maned mare.
“Sophie, it’s good to see you too but could you not squeeze me so tight?” She groaned. “I ate a little too much earlier.”
“Oh, sorry.”
Sophie then let go of the purple mare. She then spotted the dragon bringing up the rear.
“And is that Spike?”
She then approached the small dragon and hugged him.
“How have you been, little guy?’
“I’ve been doing well.” Spike said. “Just following Twilight around again.”
Twilight rolled her eyes.
“So Twilight, what brings you and Spike here to Ponyville?” Perfect Pace asked. “Did you come for the Summer Sun Celebration as well?”
“We did.” Twilight answered. “We were sent by Celestia to make sure the preparations were in order.”
“We just gotten done making sure the food is ready.” Spike said. “Right now we’re looking for a pegasus named Rainbow Dash. She’s supposed to be clearing out the clouds right now.”
Everypony looked up at the sky and saw that there were clouds still left in the sky.
“It appears she is slacking off.” Sophie said. “You would think that somepony with ‘Dash’ in their name would get the job done rather…”
“Watch out!”
Perfect lunged and practically tackled his marefriend as a light blue blur zoomed past, missing everypony a few feet.
“What was that?” Twilight asked after dodging out of the way. “And where did Spike go?”
The three ponies looked and saw that Spike had fallen in a large mud puddle. With him was a light blue pegasus with a rainbow colored mane. The winged mare looked down at Spike.
“Uh, excuse me?” She said with an awkward chuckle, knowing full well she was at fault. “Hold on let me help you.” The mare then flew away and returned with a dark cloud. She got on top of the cloud and proceeded to jump on it, causing rain to fall from the bottom. She looked down at Spike saw that the mud had indeed come off, but he was now soaked. “Oops. I guess I over did it, I know!” She then kicked the cloud away and proceeded zoom around Spike. “My very own, Rainbow Dry!” She shouted as she created a whirlwind around the dragon. She then stopped, causing the whirlwind to disappear, leaving behind a now dry dragon.
“Hey, thanks!” Spike said.
“I assume you’re Rainbow Dash?” Twilight asked.
“The one and only!” The blue mare said as she landed. “Why? You heard about me?”
“Yes I have.” Twilight said. “I’m Twilight Sparkle and the Princess sent for me to check on the weather. But from what I’ve seen, you seem to be slacking.”
“Oh please, slacking?” Rainbow Dash asked. “Don’t’ worry, I’ll get it done. Just after I’m finished practicing.”
“What are you practicing for?” Sophie asked.
“The Wonderbolts!” Rainbow said, pointing at a post on a wall. “They’re going to be here for the Celebration tomorrow, and I’m going to show them what I got!”
“The Wonderbolts?” Twilight asked. “I’m pretty sure that they won’t take somepony who isn’t able to keep the sky clear for a day.”
Rainbow Dash produced a look of offense.
“Are you kidding me?” She asked. “I can clear the in ten seconds flat. Just watch!”
Rainbow Dash then flew into the sky and proceeded to kick each cloud in the sky in what felt like the time she had claimed to achieve.
“What did you think of that?”
Perfect looked over at the clock tower in the distance and saw that barely any time had passed.
“It appears you are a mare of your word, Miss Dash.”
“I ain’t going to let Ponyville hanging!” Rainbow said before looking at Twilight, seeing that her jaw had dropped. She let out a laugh. “You should see the look on your face!” She said before letting out another laugh. “You’re a laugh, Twilight. We should hang out sometime!”
The rainbow maned pegasus then flew away.
“Well she was certainly, friendly.” Perfect said. “What do you think, Sophie?”
“I agree.” Sophie said. “And you Twilight?”
Twilight shook her head, causing her focus to return.
“She knows how to do her job.” She said. “Anyway, it was nice to talking to you two again. Right now Spike and I need to get to Town Hall to make sure the decorations are in order.”
“We are actually looking for Town Hall.” Sophie said. “Mind if we tag along?”
Jackboot carefully used his magic positioned a banner above a window on the second floor.
“Is everything alright up there?” Rarity called from the ground floor.
Jackboot trotted over to the railing.
“Almost finished up here, Miss Rarity!” Jackboot said. “I only have two banners left to hang up here.”
Rarity smiled.
“That is good to here!” She said. “Just come down here when you’re finished!”
Jackboot returned to his work. After putting up the last banner, he heard doors to the entrance open, catching his attention, and trotted over to the railing to see who it was. He saw three ponies and a small dragon carrying a list enter. He recognized two of them as his cousin and her coltfriend. The other pony and the dragon really caught his attention.
“Twilight Sparkle?” He thought. “What’s she doing here?”
He then trotted down the stairwell and into the main room. Where she saw Twilight now speaking to Rarity. The latter spotted him as he approached.
“Oh, Jackboot.” She said before returning her attention to Twilight. “This is the stallion that helped me make this possible.”
Twilight looked at the gray stallion.
“Jackboot?” She asked. “I haven’t seen you in a while. How have you been?”
“I’ve been well.” Jackboot answered. “Just piddling.”
“This seems to be a tad more than piddling.” Sophie said. “I see you delivered the packages as promised.”
“Well when given I task I see through its entirety.”
Jackboot then glanced over at Rarity.
“Oh, this is Rarity. The recipient of the packages.” He said. “Miss Rarity, this is my cousin, Sophisticata, and her lover, Perfect Pace.”
Rarity first shook Sophie’s hoof.
“It is nice to meet you.” The former said. “I must say your cousin is a very sweet stallion for bringing me my ribbon himself.”
Sophie smirked at her cousin as he scratched the back of his head while partially looking away.
Rarity then shook Perfect’s hoof, who of which gently kissed hers in return.
“It is nice to make your acquaintance ma’am.” He said. “We would like to stay but we’re going to have lunch. Do you know where we can find a place called, Sugercube Corner?”
“Why, yes.” Rarity said. “You go outside and then you take the right side road and continue until you see a building that looks like it is made of deserts.”
“Okay, thank you.” Perfect said.
Rarity then turned to Jackboot and put his hoof in hers.
“Thank you so much for the help Jackboot.” She said. “I really do appreciate it.”
“It was nothing really.” Jackboot said. “I’m just glad to help.”
“It looks like you’ve been busy.” Sophie said to Jackboot as they looked for Sugercube Corner.
“I was just doing what I was told to do.” Jackboot said. “And she seemed like she needed some help.”
“And help her, you did.” Perfect said. “What was her name again?”
“Rarity.” Jackboot answered.
“She was pretty wasn’t she?” Sophie asked, giving Jackboot a look.
“Yes, she was rather attractive.” Jackboot agreed, hiding how he truly felt.
“I think she might be single.” Sophie said, causing Jackboot to look at her, now knowing what she was getting at.
Before the conversation could continue, a pink blur suddenly landed in front of them out from no where. This blur turned out to be a pink earth pony with a puffy pink mane and bright blue eyes. What’s more is that she had possibly the biggest smile they’ve ever seen on a pony.
“Hi!” She said. “I’ve never seen you here before!”
It took a moment for Perfect to find his voice.
“Uh, yes. We just got here from Canterlot.” He said before clearing his throat. “I am Perfect Pace, and this is my marefriend, Sophisticata, and her cousin her, Jackboot. We are here for the Summer Sun Celebration.”
“It’s nice to meet you!” The pink mare said. “I’m Pinkie Pie! I know everypony here in Ponyville. I was in the middle of inviting everyone to a surprise party for the new pony in town! Do you three want to come?”
The three looked at one another. Sophie had a look in her eyes that said she want to go while Jackboot merely shrugged. Perfect then looked back at the earth pony.
“I don’t see why not.”

Chapter III - The Mare in the Moon
The evening came rather quickly as Jackboot, Sophie, and Perfect Pace arrived at the Golden Oaks Library. Earlier that day they were told to come to the library for a surprise party by a bubbly mare named Pinkie Pie. They would have gotten here sooner, but Sophie had to get changed into her dress. Her short dress that was blue with a white saddle and poofy shoulders of the same color.
“Strange place for a party, don’t you think?” Perfect asked.
“Strange place for a library, for that, matter.” Jackboot said, acknowledging that the library was inside of a tree. “At least you have access to extra paper.”
Sophie and Perfect chuckled at Jackboot’s joke.
Jackboot knocked on the door. The door then opened, revealing Pinkie Pie.
“Ah! You’re here!”
She then yanked Jackboot inside. Sophie and Perfect looked at one another before entering the library. Inside the library were streamers, balloons, and a table for refreshments. It looked like the entire town was invited. Given the size of the town, that might be a possibility.
“I’m so glad you came!” Pinkie said as she had Jackboot in a hug. Or, to Jackboot, the closest thing to a death grip. “Applejack! I told you they’d come!”
An orange mare with a blonde mane and a brown Stetson approached.
“Pinkie, ya might want to let him go.”
Pinkie then realized the tightness of her grip on Jackboot.
“Oops, sorry.”
She then let the gray stallion go, causing him to the gasp for breath.
The orange mare chuckled and approached Jackboot.
“Nice to meet ya.” She said as she stuck out her hoof. “I’m Applejack.”
Jackboot shook the mare’s hoof, feeling her grip to be firm, much like his.
“Jackboot. It is nice to meet you, Miss Applejack.”
He then introduced Applejack to Perfect and Sophie.
“I must say, Miss Applejack you have a firm grip on that hoof shake.” Perfect said. “I assume you do a lot of physical labor?”
“I sure do.” Applejack said. “I work on my family’s farm outside of town. We…”
Before Applejack could continue, Pinkie caught everypony’s attention.
“She’s coming!” She shouted. “Everypony back up against the wall!”
Everypony in the room backed up against the wall, leaving a space in the center of the large room. As Jackboot backed against the wall, he bumped into somepony. He looked and saw that it was Rarity.
“Hello, Jackboot.” She said. “Didn’t expect to see you here.”
“The feeling is mutual.” Jackboot replied. He started to feel the same way he did when he first met this indigo maned beauty. Not wanting to unsettle the mare in front of him, he decided to continue the conversation. “I must say, Miss Pie sure knows how to assemble a party. By the way, who is this party for exactly?”
“I believe it’s for…”
Suddenly, the lights turn off, causing Rarity to stop talking.
“Okay everypony, shhh!” Pinkie said.
Everypony went completely quiet as the door to the library opened, rather quickly as it practically slammed shut.
“Rude much?” Somepony asked.
“Sorry Spike.” Another said. “But I have to convince the Princess that Nightmare Moon and we’re running out of time.”
Jackboot immediately recognized the voices.
“Twilight? Spike? What are they doing here?” He then realized what Twilight has said. “Wait a moment, did she say Nightmare Moon?”
Twilight continued.
“I just need to be alone so I can study without ta bunch of crazy ponies trying to make friends all the time.”
As Twilight asked where the light switch was, the light suddenly turned on, followed by everypony shouting “surprise”. This caused Twilight to jump, evident that she was obviously not expecting such a welcome. Before she could question, Pinkie popped up in front of her.
“Surprise!” She said happily. “Hi, I’m Pinkie Pie and I threw this party just for you.” She then proceeded to bounce around Twilight, asking her if she was surprised.
“Very surprised.” Twilight answered. “But last I checked, libraries are supposed to be quiet.”
“Well that’s silly. What kind of welcome party would this be if it were quiet?” Pinkie said. “I mean, duh! Boring!”
As Pinkie rambled on as Twilight poured herself a drink, Jackboot thought about what Twilight said. “She knows about Nightmare Moon?” He asked. “Finally! Somepony who’s sane around here!”
He trotted over to Twilight as he drank from a cup. Before he could say anything, Twilight turned around, reveling that her cheeks were pure red and sweat and tears started going down her face.
“Are you alright, Sugercube?” Applejack asked.
Suddenly, Twilight jumped up, her mane caught fire, steam burst from her ears, and the sound of a whistle came from now where before she ran out of the room and up the stairs.
“What just happened?” Perfect Pace asked as he and Sophie approached. “Is she okay?”
Jackboot examined the bottle from which she gotten her drink.
“Hot sauce?” He asked. “What’s this doing here?”
Before anypony could answer Jackboot’s question, Pinkie took hold of the bottle of the hot flavored liquid, poured some of the contents on a cupcake, and ate the whole thing, leaving everypony shocked.
“What?” Pinkie asked with a mouthful, noticing the amount of eyes on her. “It’s good!”
“I’m not even going to bother with a question.” Perfect said.
The sky was dark as the party went on. Jackboot was introduced to a rainbow maned pegasus named Rainbow Dash, who works on the Ponyville weather team, and another pegasus with a pink mane and tail named Fluttershy. After speaking with the yellow mare, he learned that she is providing the music for the celebration with her birds, something that Jackboot found interesting. But what Jackboot was really interested in was what he heard Twilight say earlier. It may not look it, but he was absolutely ecstatic that somepony else was aware of Nightmare Moon. He then excused himself to use the washroom. This was both a fact, as he had consumed a lot of punch, and was an excuse as he also went to look for Twilight.
“Where did you go, Twilight?” He asked as he left the washroom.
His question was answered by Spike leaving a room and closing the door behind him. Unlike Twilight, he was really enjoying the party, to the point he was wearing a lampshade on his head. How that happened, Jackboot didn’t know.
“Hey, Jackboot.” The purple dragon said after spotting him. “Enjoying the party?”
“I am.” Jackboot said. “I can’t remember the last time I stayed up this late.”
He then looked over at the door Spike had shut.
“I assume Twilight is in there?”
“Yeah. She isn’t really much of a party pony.” Spike said. “If you want to talk to her, go ahead. But I don’t think she wants to.”
“Trust me; she’ll want to talk to me after what I tell her.” Jackboot said, producing a smirk on his face.
Spike smiled and nodded.
“Okay then.” He said. “We’ll be down stairs when you’re done.”
Jackboot nodded at the dragon and made his way to the door. Upon knocking on the wooden surface, he got a response.
“I said I’m not interested!”
Jackboot the opened the door and poked his head in. Despite the lack of light in the room, he saw Twilight on the bed on a loft.
“Are you alright in here, Twilight?”
Twilight’s ears poked up.
“Jackboot? What are you doing here?”
“Just seeing how you’re doing.” The stallion answered. “Not into parties?”
“It’s just annoying is what it is.” Twilight answered plainly. She let out a sigh. “I just want to do my research without this friend making thing getting in the way!”
Jackboot rolled his eyes.
“You can say that again.” He said as he closed the door behind him. “My parents have tried to get me to do the same thing.”
“Really?” Twilight asked. “How so?”
“Oh the usual.” Jackboot said as he sat down on the floor. “Trying to get me to go to parties, royal functions, and all that. I’m lucky if we get a major order at the metal shop or any other excuse not to go. I mean, I just to work to get enough money so I can get an apartment of my own. And all of this friend making stuff is hindering my progress.”
“At least you have good excuses.” Twilight said. “I’m still a student with only my studies to go on. It doesn’t help that it’s my teacher who wants me to socialize.”
“It also doesn’t help if you’re related to them.” Jackboot added. “Whether they are your parents or the ruler of the nation.”
Twilight smiled at Jackboot, who smiled in return. This may be the first actual conversation the two had with another pony, who wasn’t family, in a long time. Not only that, it was something the two can agree on. Before either of them could continue, the gray stallion thought of the reason he came up here in the first place.
“Twilight, I was wondering something.” He said. “I heard what you saying to Spike when you got here. Something about Nightmare Moon?”
Twilight sighed.
“I know, I know.” She said. “Celestia keeps telling me not worry about Nightmare Moon, Spike keeps telling me not worry about Nightmare Moon, and I’m pretty sure you’re going to tell me…”
“Tell you that legend has it that on the longest day of the thousandth year...” Jackboot said, cutting Twilight off. “…the stars will aid in her escape and she will bring about night time eternal. And that day is tomorrow.”
Twilight looked at Jackboot with wide eyes.
“You know about Nightmare Moon too?” She asked as she hoped off her bed and trotted to Jackboot. “How did you know?”
Before Jackboot could answer, Spike opened the door.
“Come on you two!” The little dragon said. “It’s time to watch the sunrise!”
The sky was black as the ponies made their way to Town Hall. Despite its size, the town was beginning to become rather crowded.
“So are you excited to see, Nightmare Moon?” Perfect asked, jokingly.
Jackboot smirked at Perfect.
“Well I’m excited.” He said. “Excited that I’m not the only pony who is aware of her.”
He then nudged his head toward Twilight was stood some feet away with Spike on her back, talking to Pinkie, or, Pinkie talking to her.
“Twilight?” Sophie asked. “She’s riled up about that foal’s tale too?”
Before Jackboot could respond, he was interrupted by a chorus of birds and music. A spotlight was aimed at the stage as a brown mare with a gray mane stood there, wearing a white color and teal cravat and a pair of glasses. From what they were told, this was the Mayor of Ponyville.
“Fillies and Gentlecolts!” She began. “As Mayor of Ponyville, it is my great pleasure to announce the beginning of the Summer Sun Celebration!”
Everypony cheered.
As the mayor continued, Jackboot looked up at the moon through the glass dome of the room. As he looked, he saw the image of an alicorn on its surface, where it was as long as he could remember.
Suddenly, he saw a brief flash, and the image had disappeared.
Jackboot gasped and trotted to Twilight, who had a worried look on her face.
“You saw it too?” He whispered, tapping her on the shoulder.
Twilight looked and him and nodded.
“And now it is my great honor to introduce to you, the ruler of our land, the very pony who gives us the sun and moon each and every day, the good, the wise, the bringer of harmony to of Equestria…!”
Jackboot frantically looked around.
“How did no pony else not see it too?”
“…Princess Celestia!”
Everypony’s attention went to the second floor balcony, where a curtain was placed. As the Mayor introduced the Princess, Rarity, who was positioned at the curtained, opened it as Fluttershy’s chorus of birds serenaded the Princess’s entrance as the spot light aimed at the Princess…
…or lack thereof, as the space was the Princess was to be introduced, was completely bare.
Everypony in the building started to become worried as the Mayor urged the crowd to remain calm. Rarity approached the balcony after disappearing behind the curtain.
“She’s gone!”
This time everypony gasped.
“This can’t be happening.” Sophie said with worry. “What’s going on?”
“It’s okay, dear.” Perfect said as he put a front leg around her. “There is probably a reasonable…”
“Look!”
At the top balcony, a cloud of mist in various shades of blue began to form. It grew bigger, and thicker, until, suddenly, it cleared, leaving behind a dark alicorn in blue armor.
“Nightmare Moon.” Jackboot and Twilight said in unison as Spike fainted.
“Oh, my beloved subjects.” The alicorn said. “It’s been so long since I’ve seen your precious little sun loving, faces.”
“What did you do with our Princess?”
The pony who asked that question was Rainbow Dash, who was being held back by Applejack.
Nightmare Moon laughed.
“Why? Am I not royal enough for you?” She asked. “Don’t you know who I am?”
“Does my crown not count after being imprisoned for a thousand years?” Nightmare Moon asked. “Did you not recall the legend? Did you not see the signs?”
“I did!”
Everypony looked and saw Twilight standing defiantly next to Jackboot.
“And we know who you are!” Jackboot said. “You’re the mare in the moon!”
“Nightmare Moon!” The two said in unison.
Everypony gasped.
“Was it not clear before, you idiots?” Jackboot thought bitterly.
“Well, well, well.” Nightmare Moon said. “Somepony who remembers me. Then also know why I am here?”
“You’re here to…” Twilight tried to say.
“…to bring about eternal night.” Jackboot said, finishing for here.
Nightmare Moon laughed again.
“Very good. Remember this day little ponies, for this will be your last.” She said. “From this moment forth, the night will last forever!”
Nightmare Moon then laughed again, this time more maniacally as the blue mist returned and thunder and lightning came from nowhere, as if to punctuate her words.
Jackboot stood there with his eyes wide.
“Out of all of the times I could have been wrong...” He thought. “…why couldn't it be now?”
