A Tale of Something New
Chapter 1: What I Wouldn't Give for Adventure
Load Full StoryNext ChapterOh look the male mare is back in town. I’m not sure how often she comes here, but it happens enough that at least mom knows her name. And there’s Lind Bloom watering the azaleas again. I have to remember to buy some as a snack before going home today. I wonder who-
“Ms. Blossom, is there something particularly interesting happening outside today?” asks Lonely Meadow, our teacher, using a voice loud enough to startle me out of my own thoughts. All the other fillies and colts start to laugh as I jumped so hard I fell out of my desk.
“Nothing ever happens in this town Mrs. Meadow,” I respond in a less than pleasant tone. For all the laughing they did before, that particular jab made them brake out into even harder laughter, though why I will never understand.
I do think I’m getting ahead of myself, and none of you even know who I am. My name is Cherry Blossom, and I am a unicorn with a light pink coat and cherry red mane. I never understood why the color of my mane and tail is red when all the cherries I’ve ever seen are purple, but mom told me they’re red so that’s what I say. What about my parents? I’ll tell you about them later. For now, my attention was on the mare with light a light blue coat and dark green mane that was my teacher.
“Ms. Blossom, if what you say is true, then that is all the more reason to pay less attention to it, and more attention to my lecture,” she said.
“I’m sorry Mrs. Meadow,” I reply in a slightly lower tone.
“Very well, now return to your seat. I am about to go through advanced arithmetic.” I don’t say a word as I return to my seat, but believe me I was absolutely excited about relearn something I taught myself years ago.
After school, all of us said our goodbyes to Mrs. Meadow, and we were off home. I stopped by and entered the flower shop as I crossed the road.
“Good afternoon, Lindy,” I say as a greeting to a particularly beautiful mare with pale yellow coat and sun yellow mane.
“Good afternoon, Cherry, are you hear to buy a snack?” she asks.
“Of course, your flowers are delicious, and mom hasn’t given me a big allowance since the incident with your sister.” As she chuckles, I can’t help but wonder how someone like her still doesn’t have a special somepony. She then responds, “Well I can’t say she didn’t deserve it, but you really shouldn’t use frogs in such a mean way.” She’s right of course, as it can be considered cruel to the frogs, but I don’t particularly express that for fear of their mother coming into the shop. I opt to make a slight giggle instead, and stop the conversation at that.
I get home and notice the mail box is still full from when the mail mare delivered our mail this morning. Though I find it odd, I decide to levitate our mail with me as I unlock the house and enter home. While no one is home at the moment, I find a small note on the living room table saying that they both won’t be home until late tomorrow. All things considered, they aren’t home all that often after I get back from school anyway, so I don’t make a big deal of it, and instead decide to focus on my homework that takes all of two minutes after I briefly glance at the paper. The advantages of being an avid bookworm with a photographic memory can be great sometimes. So after I finish my homework I decide to read some of my favorite novels before making dinner.
That night I have a dream I was flying through the clouds. Not like that could ever happen, but they call it a dream for a reason, right? I really do wish I could just fly away sometimes though. I wasn’t lying to Mrs. Meadow when I said that nothing happens in this town. It’s quiet, it’s boring, and above all, it’s isolated in a remote part of Equestria where no one really cares to go. It’s just a quiet town full of earth ponies and one unicorn filly that came to existence due to 'family issues'.
The next morning I find myself waking up as early as always. I love that dream. I really do wish I was born a pegasus, but enough about that. I get ready, eat breakfast, and before I know it, I’m out the door; heading for school. On the way, I give a good morning greeting to all the stallions and mares that I see every morning, and they greet me back. Lindy is the last pony on my route before arriving at school and she usually isn’t up this early anyway.
“Well, if it isn’t little miss bored,” said a filly with a blue coat and dark blue mane as I walk into the classroom.
“Good morning, Pained Glass,” I retort.
“It’s ‘Stained Glass’, and you know it,” she replies.
“Not much of a better name,” I reply before Mrs. Meadow enters the class informing us to all get to our seats. Honestly how is such a spoiled brat related to the greatest mare in town? It makes no sense, but I digress as it’s time to listen to another lecture on advanced arithmetic. Today is going to be another great day.
After school I find my path to Lindy’s shop blocked by her sister and her two twin purple lackeys: Amber Jewel and Amber Gem. Don’t ask about the names as all I can gather is that their mother really loves amber.
“Now where did we leave off this morning?” asking in that smirk that could make milk go bad.
“You were about to cry to the teacher about the pain my insult left you, now if you don’t mind, get out of my way,” admittedly I could have been nicer about saying that, but I feel like I’d better stand my ground for now.
“Or you’ll do what? Turn me into a newt? You don’t scare me Limp Horn,” she says, as the words suddenly start to sink in and I actually start getting mad.
“Stained Glass! Do I have to tell mom, what you just said?” asks Lindy as I look at her with the greatest ‘Thank You’ smile I could muster.
Sitting with Lindy at her patio in the back of her shop, I felt like the world could stop there and all would be great. As boring as this town is, Lind Bloom is really the only pony that makes it bearable. Even if my wishes for her to be my sister fall on death ears, I can at least enjoy talking with her about my day.
“Cherry, do you really have to fight with my sister all the time?” she asks.
I want to give her a resounding yes, but the better of me thinks it over and says, “I wouldn’t have to if she would stop trying to be a bully. I don’t mind how she is, but always having to defend myself from her insults really puts a strain on me trying to be nice.”
She looks at me with a sad look, but closes her eyes, sighs, and replies, “Just try not to kill each other. The one thing I couldn’t stand is having both my little sisters be gone.”
To be honest, I don’t know how I got home as all I remember is the best mare in town calling me her ‘sister’. I somehow remembered to get the mail, and found another letter from my parents inside it. Probably just a letter saying they’ll be a bit later than usual, so I put in on the table, and go do my normal routine of homework then reading before dinner. I tell you, if I knew then what I know now, I would not have had the extra salad for dinner…
Author's Note
Well let's see how this story turns out. Not sure what tags will suit this. Not planning on it getting dark enough to require the "Dark" note tag, but if what I read on the FAQ is correct, then I can just adjust the tags as necessary. Not sure how I want to write the next chapters, but hopefully you all enjoy this story. When ponies/beings from the canon cast enter the story, I'll be sure I do enough reading to bring their full character in, but for now I want to start small by developing Cherry Blossom as this is her story. As a side note: I find this formal format for starting a new character a bit jarring, unless I misread that, but rules are rules; and overall at least it makes it easier to see the conversations.
