Alicorns, like all other ponies, can go through heat cycles. But because of the image they have to maintain, both Princesses Celestia and Luna must bottle up their urges during their heat cycles. Without a husband to please them, like Cadance does, both Princesses turn to another means to slake their sexual thirst.
