Backsliding (Part 3)

Previous Chapter

It was a mildly warm summer day, and Sunny decided she would spend it taking a stroll around Crystal Heights Park. The green grass and lush vegetation that filled her vision were a welcome break from staring at a screen or the millions of documents she'd spent her weekends staring at. All around were the signing of birds and the noises of people enjoying their day at the park.

Sunny noticed a park bench and decided to take a rest. She pulled out a book and barely noticed someone sitting beside her.

"Hey, Sunny."

The blue-skinned girl dropped her book in shock at the familiarity of the voice. She turned and saw the fact of Twilight Sparkle.

Her Twilight. She was alive, and she was smiling.

"Twilight," Sunny asked, a tone of hope. "You're, you're-"

"Beautiful, isn't it," Twilight said warmly. The lavender-skinned girl was glancing toward the various people at the park. The two Crystal Prep teens saw two college-aged boys playing frisbee, a couple holding hands and making out, and primary school kids picking flowers and going on about how beautiful they were.

"It's amazing!" Twilight commented with warmth in her voice. "How do little kids get obsessed over something like a flower? What's the scientific explanation for this?" Sunny smirked. Twilight was a teen nerd. She always looked for logic to explain stuff.

"I don't know," Sunny said wistfully, absent-mindedly grabbing a flower off the ground. "Maybe they're just pretty, or maybe...kids like doing those things together, you know?"

"I don't know," Twilight said with a stone-like expression. "Anything about those things."

Sunny was confused by the change of expression. "What are you..."

"Oh, doing things we people, that's the one thing I don't know about," Twilight said casually, glancing at the kids like they were some math problem. "Having friends and being around people is something I never got to experience."

A guilty expression formed on Sunny's face. "Well..."

"You made sure of that, didn't you?" Almost in an instant, Twilight's expression shifted from regret to pure, cold malice. Despite the warm day, Sunny felt a chill go down her spine at the icy expression in Twilight's eyes. The purple-skinned girl sat still, like a deer in the headlights, as Twilight's eyes glared into her mercilessly.

After what felt like an eternity, Sunny finally spoke up. "I'm, I'm sorry-"

"Why are you sorry?" Twilight asked, a small, almost predatory smile on the bookworm's face. "You don't have to be sorry." She glanced back to the toddlers picking flowers, the same cruel gaze on her eyes.

Sunny's trepidation only grew. "What are you?"

Twilight's hand began to light up with a strange purple glow. She aimed it at the children.

"STOP IT!"

"Isn't that what I begged you to do?" Twilight said, her casual tone making her demented smile all the creepier. "I asked you just to help me and you didn't stop it did you>"

"Please don't-" a wave of energy shot out from Twilight's arm, obliterating the children, who let out a blood-curdling scream as they were burnt to ash, the beautiful grass also being burnt away, revealing a layer of ugly brown top soil.

Sunny cried out in horror and fear at the mindless brutality and Twilight's utter joy at what she'd done. But the mad teen didn't stop there. Twilight soon started blasting everyone with magic, reveling in their screams and the sight of their burned bodies, also wrecking the vegetation of the park. All while Sunny watched with a frozen and horrified expression.

Within moments, not only were all the park-goers dead, but the entire park had been reduced to a barren nusk, and the blue sky was filled with smoke.

"Wasn't that funny?" Twilight asked with a gritted smile.

"They-they had nothing to do with it!" Sunny said, finally breaking out of her trance.

"Oh, they have everything to do with it," Twilight said, her false cheer slowly giving way to mindless rage. "So very much to do with it. They told me about love, they told me friendship, they told me everyone would accept for who I am," Twilight clenched her fists is fuming anger. "They-,"

"Look, I promise we'll be good friends-"

"They gave me the power to think, feel, and have love and then never shared with me!"

"I—" Sunny looked around. The trashed park had turned pitch black, while the sky itself had changed from blue to a very bright and sinister lavender.

"Never for me to be invited to a party, never for me to be invited to hang out with friends, never for me to feel LOVE!" Twilight began hyperventilating before continuing. "I was in Tartarus, looking at paradise, I was an outcast and you had all the friends you could ever want...AND I BEGAN TO HATE..." Twilight soon descended into a vicious cackle that made Sunny's heartrace.

"Hate is no answer-"Sunny began, only to feel like something was squeezing her throat. She felt a magic glow around her windpip, cutting off her oxygen. Her panic only grew more as Twilight glared at her with a monstrous rage.

"HATE, HATE, HATE!" Twilight yelled as she began lifting both herself and Sunny into the air, still strangling her. "There are one quintillion atoms in the human body. If the word 'hate' were carved into each millimicron, it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for you all at this micro instant. HATE. HATE!" During the mad rant, Twilight's telekinetic grip on her throat tightened, and Twilight's appearance began to change.

Twilight's sclera changed to a glowing blue, while her purple irises became pitiless purple dots. Her glasses gave way to lenses made of fire. A gothic dress replaced her typical lab uniform, and her dress shoes were replaced by purple boots that glowed around the heels. Her bun shifted into a manic beehive that moved around like an angry flame. A creepy dark horn burst from her head, glowing with an eerie blue. Dark and almost demonic wings burst from her back.

"No one ever loved me!" The creature said in a quiet and almost regretful tone. Then, the manic and crazed expression returned, and Sunny felt her vision go dark as her oxygen supply was cut off completely.

"And I'll make sure that no one will ever be loved again."

"That. I. Promise."

Sunny lept from the bed with a yell, tears running down her eyes. She kept hyperventilating as if she had been joked to death for real. She held a pillow to her mouth, not wanting to wake her parents up.

Juniper trudged into Sunny's house for their usual Monday study date. Due to how their schedules worked and their clubs, Juniper and Sunny didn't have much time to interact on Monday, which is why the film-loving girl cherished these study sessions, especially since her other friends were busy.

Using the key left under the mat for her, Juniper entered the house, calling for Sunny. Only for her to practically run into her.

"Hey June!" Sunny said, with a little bit too much excitement.

"Hey," Juniper said, confused by the manic expression on her friend's face. "What's going-"

"Wanna do some experiments?" Sunny blurted out. A long, quiet pause ensued as Juniper stared at the blue-skinned girl.

"Sunny," Juniper said, slightly disappointed, "you promised me we would study. My calculus test is tomorrow-"

"C'mon, you are super smart," Sunny said with a forced cheer that came across as belittling more than encouraging. "You're building a satellite for crying out loud."

"That doesn't mean I know everything-"

"Juniper, I thought we were friends," Sunny butted in, a subtle menace in tone. "Didn't I help you? Why aren't you helping me?"

Juniper looked to the ground with a defeated look. "You're, you're right. Sorry. We are friends."

"Don't worry about it," Sunny said. "Now, let's do some more experimenting." Sunny turned and scurried up to her room. Juniper looked at the door helplessly before following Sunny up and helping her friend.

But Juniper didn't feel like she was a friend helping out. She felt like she was being ordered around like some secretary.

The Next Day

Juniper walked out of the testing room, bags under her bespectacled eyes. It wasn't just the fact that she had been doing experiments until her curfew that left her tired, it was that she most likely failed the test.

She exhaustedly marched toward her locker and saw Lemon Zest checking her phone. She marched up to her lemon-haired friend, hoping to have someone to vent to.

"Hey Lemon," Juniper began, "you're not gonna believe-"

"Sorry, can't talk, text, busy, got to go, bye." Lemon Zest suddenly said, seemingly hurrying away from an astonished Juniper. Only for her to hurry back to her.

"You're doing the satellite stuff right?" Lemon asked her.

"Yeah," Juniper said uneasily.

"Great, anyways, got to go!" The music lover said abruptly, not even giving Juniper the time of day. Her friend-no, Juniper didn't feel like a friend right now. She felt like some overworked secretary. She had worked all night, and Lemon Zest never bothered to give her the time of day.

Unless it was about her experiments, Lemon suddenly had time to talk about that despite saying she was too busy to talk.

The Crystal Prep student body chatted about their lives, ignorant of the pigtailed girl standing still in the halls.

If they did notice her, they would see the brutal glare and her firsts clenching to the point that parts of her skin turned white.

Author's Note

After many requests, I finally found the inspiration to start another chapter. This bone-chilling animatic of the radio adaptation of I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream inspired me to punch out another chapter.

AM Hate Monologue.

While I still intend to finish the story, I cannot promise a consistent publishing pattern. I have other fan fiction and private projects that command my attention, so I will cycle back and forth between what I feel is the top priority.

But I want to clarify that I have not lost sight of this story and will finish it someday. So, for those who have followed my story for the last few years, thank you for your patience and for taking the time to read it.
