Chapter 2: Identity Complexity

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

It's been almost a... week? I think so. Well, it's been a week since I've been living in the Sugarcube Corner with Pinkie Pie. I like it.

Treats and pastries are good, but that's not the only thing I eat obviously. There are ''daisy sandwiches'' and salad of green stuff, that are good too. Pinkie Pie teaches me to bake goodies, I'm pretty good at it. As good as when I start a fire. Which is not good at all. Pinkie Pie cheers me up, saying that there is a young filly even worse at baking than I am, which is nice to hear I guess.

As I look through Ponyville, tiny spots of flashbacks are floating back in my head. I am starting to remember how to pay for things using ''bits'' and especially... how to act like a pony. Because sincerly, I fail at it.

But there are things that are bothering me, besides this seemingly perfect paradise.

When I walk through Ponyville, ponies keep looking at me with such judgemental glares.

Pinkie Pie keeps telling me to ignore them as they don't know me. Does not help that much since I don't know myself that much either. I'm a pale gray pony with pixelated lines, no mane, no ''cutie mark'' and no shadow following me. I don't feel like a normal pony, even though Pinkie tells me that nopony is ''normal''.

Everytime I take the effort to socialise with ponies, their glare keep making me feel uncomfortable and then it becomes awkward. Basically, I also fail at socialising. So me being very anxious, I stay more often in the Sugarcube Corner, in Pinkie's room, hidden under her bed. By the way, this is the place where I sleep. Pinkie Pie suggested on getting me a comfy mattress, but I declined the offer as I like it under her bed.

For some reason, the dark seems safe to me. I like the quiet. Much better than Pinkie's blabbering and the loud baby twins that live here. But I manage to live with it somehow.

As I am scared to go to Ponyville alone, Pinkie Pie accompanies me. She hops through the crowd, while I walk nervously,
focussing on the other ponies staring at me.

''Stop looking at them! Pinkie breaks through my ears. They're only trying to ruin your fun! Don't let them! Just hop with me!
And we can even sing a song! Listen!''

She inhales deeply before starting to sing a song that is all over the place.
Oh, what an awful experience. But I don't bother to tell Pinkie to stop singing, because I don't want to ruin her fun.

Suddenly, we hear a yell in the horizon.

''WATCH OUT!''

An orange filly on a rolling thingy is coming very fast in our direction! And it's the collision! I collapse on my back. Ow! My back hurts!

Other voices are then heard.

''SCOOTALOO! Are you alright?''

Two little fillies run to the fallen one next to me. I get up with difficulty. Pinkie Pie grabs yet again my cheeks, panicked.

''Are you alright? That must have been painful! Do you still have all your teeth? Did you get a blow on your head? If so, then can you predict the future, now?!''

''I-I-I'm alright, Pinkie! Please let go of me!''

A white filly unicorn helps the orange one that I got hit by back on her hooves, with the yellow one watching.

''You just hit somepony! You should apologize to her!'' Says the helping filly.

''Yeah, yeah! That's what I'm gonna do!'' Says the orange one after shaking her dizzy head. She walks to me, looking at the floor.

''I'm sorry ma'am for bumping into you, it won't happen even aga--'' She did not finish her sentence when she looks up to me, shocked. ''Woah! What are you?'' She exclaims.

Pinkie Pie giggles. ''Silly Scoots, it's not ''what'' are you, it's ''who'' are you! By the way, this is Blank! She came in Ponyville living in the Sugarcube Corner with me a lil' while ago!'' She explains.

''Oh really?'' Asks the white one.

''Why don't she have her own house?'' Asks the yellow one.

''She don't have enough bits for that! So she'll stay with me for a while until she earns enough!''

''That's kind of awesome!'' Exclaims Scootaloo.

The yellow comes to greet me, with a large smile on her face.

''Howdy! I'm Applebloom! And this is mah friends Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle! And we are... in position, girls!''

She turns to the two other fillies and raise her hoof that is piled up by the other's

''THE CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS!'' They all cheer as they lift their hooves up the sky.

''Wait, interrupts Sweetie Belle. Since we got our cutie marks, we don't have to seek for one anymore, right?''

''Yeah, but now we help other ponies get their own!'' Claims Scootaloo.

''She's kinda right, Scoots. Says Applebloom. Maybe we should change our name for something like... Cutie Mark Helpers?''

''Hmm, no. I kind of already like our actual group name!'' Says Scootaloo.

''Okay! Agrees Sweetie Belle. We're still Cutie Mark Crusaders, then! And today, we help a pony that has no cutie mark! Blank!''

My eyes widen and surprise. Sweetie Belle grabs my flank to show to the other fillies, in my embarrassement.

''See girls? She got no cutie mark! We should do something about it!''

''Um, Sweetie. That's not only her cutie mark that's missing. Says Scootaloo. Look at her, she--''

''I know! I abruptely interrupt her, fed up with my apparence remarks. I have no mane, no colors and I have ruggy lines! I know I nearly look like nothing! I know all about it! I don't need to be reminded of it! So shut up, you gobbling chicken!''

I grind my teeth and anger. My expression then change to an embarrassed one. Scootaloo freezes, her belly brushing against the ground.

''C...Chicken?.'' Utters Scootaloo sadely.

I sit, rubbing my arm in regret.

''I... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be angry. Pinkie, I wanna go home.''

The pink mare looks at me with concern.

''Woah, that escalated quickly! Okay, follow me Blank. Bye-bye, Cutie Mark Crusaders!''

She waves at the the three fillies, who are speechless of what happened, before she leaves.

Pinkie Pie does not hop this time. She just walk. This is the first time since I met her that I see her like this.

''Well, she rolls my eyes toward me. It looks like you finally spilled the rotten cupcakes that was inside you. But probably to the wrong pony, anyway.''

''I didn't mean to offend her.'' I say sadely.

''I know you didn't. You were so fed up about the complexity of your look. Do you like the way you look like?''

''I do. But I wish ponies would stop talking about it.''

''Oh! Oh! I have an idea! We could go to Rarity's boutique! Maybe she can help! Follow me.''

NOW she hops. I follow her through the village despite more ponies looking at me.

We approach a large fancy-looking building and enter it. I hop in surprise when I hear a tinkling noise, when the door opens.

My eyes then turn to the place inside. What a wide place! The floor is so flat and smooth!

''Rarity! We're here!'' Yelled Pinkie Pie in her high-pitched cheerful voice. She hops through the place.

As I walk through the place, I come across a seemingly lifeless pony, with a bar through it's belly. And this pony looks like... me?! I got very scared at this moment.

''Aaand, this is Blank! She's my new friend living with me at the Sugarcube Corner!''

The mention of my name caught my attention toward Pinkie Pie, who points her hoof at me, and a white mare with a capped purple mane and such pretty blue eyes, who looks at me with curiosity and surprise. The white mare walks to me, clearly smiling to try to hide her shock to my apparence. I look at the horn stuck to her head. I've seen other ponies with these long things on their foreheads, but never that close.

''Why, hello dear... Blank. She greets me with her gentle voice. I am Rarity. Welcome to the Carousel Boutique! What can I, um... do for you?''

''Uh...''

Pinkie stands next to me and dispose her hoof on my shoulder.

''Blanky-Blank has an issue with her apparence. She's getting very tired of the other ponies looking at her, or overhearing them.''

She just called me ''Blanky-Blank''?

''...I see. I will try what I can do. Follow me, darling.''

So I did. She leads me to a smooth wall. When she turns it to me, I get startled. I see another pony through it, that looks like me... Is that me?! I make different head movements. It does the same! So it's definitely me!

''Excuse me for a moment, darling.'' Said Rarity.

I get very distracted with this thing... is that called a mirror? But my distraction breaks when I overhear Rarity whispering to Pinkie Pie behind my back.

I overhear three words. ''Cancer'', ''Shadow'' and ''Mane''.

Rarity walks back to me along Pinkie Pie.

''I'll take care of you, dear Blank. Poor thing, no fabulous mane on your bald head? I'll take care of this, sweetheart.''

I hear dazzling noise. I am surprised to see Rarity's horn glowing. I never have seen that before! A small table with pony heads with manes floats next to me. I am scared at the sight of these pony heads. Pinkie Pie giggles.

''They're not real ponies, Blanky-Blank! Don't be afraid! They're just mannequins!''

Reasurring to hear, I guess.

''I have all these unique wigs for you to try on.'' States Rarity while making one of these ''wigs'' float.

I then realise that Pinkie Pie and Rarity are trying to help me improve my apparence. Do I really want this? When I think about this, maybe the ponies will stop looking at me with a judgemental glare, if I change my apparence.

So I approved their help.

Rarity made me try so many manes. The first was... too swirly. The second... Too flat. The third... too colorful... at least for me.

The last one seems to be of my taste. It's blue with paler wicks.

Pinkie snorts of amusement. ''You like one of my friends, Rainbow Dash! Except that your mane isn't rainbow colors.''

''Splendid!'' Rarity claps her hooves in excitement. ''Even though I liked the swirled one... Now, we need to try some of MY creations on you.''

I go to a low platform, with three more mirrors. Rarity pushes a double-bar to my direction, with some clothing hanged on it.

''Let's get started, darling.'' Rarity says confidently, with a smirk on her face.

This lasts SO MANY hours! She made me try so many dresses of different colors and patterns!

Eventually, I finally decided on a dress that I thought fits me.

''This... This is perfect! I like it!'' I say confidently. Finally, no more ponies will judge me for what I look like! No more bald pony!

I turn to the two mares who smiles in satisfaction. I then turn back to the mirror in the middle.

Suddenly, I have a negative feeling... I feel that something's wrong.

When Iook at the mirror, I see a different pony. Too different. I no longer regonize myself. I am no longer myself. I look down in embarrassement.

''I... I changed my mind. I declared in a sad tone. I... I prefer the way I looked like before. Now, I don't feel like myself anymore. I look pretty, but... It's not for me. I'm sorry to have wasted your time, girls.''

Pinkie and Rarity let out a gasp of surprise.

''But... but you said you wanted to change, so that ponies won't make fun of you anymore!'' Exclaims Pinkie. Rarity steps forward and turns to Pinkie.

''Oh, Pinkie. I may have spent hours trying to change the style of this particular mare, but she's pretty much right. I learned somewhere that we have to accept who we are, the way we are.'' The white unicorn approaches me.

''What matters is not here, (She points her hoof to my head) but here.'' She then point it to my chest.

''If you feel like you are comfortable with what you're already like, stay the way you are. She continues. It does not matter what ponies think of you. Do not change for anypony. You are perfect the way you are.''

I feel a smile of reassurance stretching through my face. She is right. What ponies think of me does not matter. I am...

Just me.

Pinkie jumps at me and squeezes me a big, tight hug. She rubs her cheeks to mine, to my discomfort.

''Oh, Blanky-Blank! I would have missed that baldy-bald head of yours, and that naked body of yours! We are ponies afterall! We are made to be naked!''

Rarity frowns at these words. ''Right. Thank you, Pinkie.'' She grumbles.

After Pinkie let go of her deadly hug, I turn to Rarity.

''Thank you for trying to help.''

She smiles. ''No problem at all, my dear.''

I and Pinkie wave goodbye to Rarity and leave the boutique. Pinkie Pie hops cheerfully... so do I, surprisingly. I never felt so happy with myself. As I hop through the village with her, I overhear a pony whispering to another one.

''Look at these two weirdos. They sure need some therapy and health checkup.''

But I don't care. Not anymore. What matters, is me.

(In Rarity's boutique)

The elegant white unicorn walks through her boutique. She approaches one of her mannequins.

''It is such a shame. She sighs in deception. Blank would have made such a fantastic new mannequin. She has such a perfect shape. But I couldn't try my dresses on a pixelated body.

Maybe next time.''

She smirks, with unhealthy intentions.

Then the screen goes black. Why? Because suspense!
