Hearts and Hooves day

Melodic chirping drifted through the open window on a light breeze and Derpy Hooves let out a satisfied sigh. She lay awake in her bed looking up at the sky blue ceiling and taking in the sense of the beautiful morning. The sun shone brightly through her lightly flapping curtains and bathed her room in a brilliant light, making it seem open and peaceful. The dawn chorus of the birds was particular favorite of hers. She would sleep with the window open, even in winter, just so she could hear their tranquil chirping. The air smelled of a spring morning, dew and freshness. After a few quite minutes of lying there, absorbing the sounds, Derpy slipped out of bed onto her wooden floor. The boards creaked softly under her weight, before she quietly trotted to her bedroom door and onto the landing outside. The landing was also bathed in the brilliant sunlight that flooded her bedroom and through the window at the end, she could see Ponyville town hall. She stepped past her daughter's, Dinky, room and heard a faint whisper of the sounds from within. The little filly was making soft and timid sounding snores at a fairly rapid rate. Derpy chuckled to herself at the cute yet funny noises her daughter was making. She continued along the landing to the stairs, but she stopped at the last second and gazed out of the large window. The day was beautiful, as she had expected, with great towering clouds sparsely roaming across the immense sky. She turned and walked down the stairs smiling.

Dinky cam clattering down the stairs and into the kitchen where her mother was busy wiping down the messy counters (with little success). The small unicorn ran up to her mum and gave her a prolonged hug around her middle.

"Happy hearts and hooves day mum." sang the excited filly. Derpy looked at her with a look of confusion on her face.

"What?" questioned the confused Pegasus.

"Hearts and Hooves day, you know, the day when ponies celebrate love and find there special somepony."

Derpy still looked rather baffled by the rambling filly.

"That's today?"

"Yeh." replied the foal, now also confused, at the fact that her mother had not remembered one of Equestria's most celebrated days.

"Well in that case, happy hearts and hooves day muffin." Derpy embraced her daughter and kissed her on the forehead, much to the disgust of the struggling unicorn. "Breakfast is on the table." Derpy released the filly and she scurried of into the room where the sound of clattering plates and shifting furniture could be then heard. Before long Derpy walked in to find her daughter had already finished her meal and had now disappeared of to somewhere else in the house. Derpy lay back on the sofa and preened her wings, removing all the damaged feathers and making sure that they were healthy. "how could i forget hearts and hooves day" she thought to her self. Before long she started to wonder where Dinky has got to. She received her answer when the little unicorn came charging in with a pink heart shaped envelope in her small mouth. She placed it on Derpy's chest, then climbed up onto her stomach.

"Mum, look! Someponys sent me a card."

Dinky tore it open and read it out.

"Dear Dinky. I think your lovely and pretty. And you are also really kind. Will you be my special somepony. From Feather Weight."

Dinky's smile beamed and she hugged the letter to her chest. Derpy on the other hand was rather shocked that her daughter had somepony who wanted to be her special somepony.

"Ooh! Dinky's got a coltfreind." teased Derpy, prodding dinky playfully with a wing tip. Dinky blushed and slipped down from her mother, before placing the card on a nearby window sill.

"Shush, mum. I don't have a coltfriend."

"Yet." said Derpy, continuing to tease her daughter about her little romance.

"Mum!" Shouted Dinky, anger flaring in her voice. "I don't have a coltfreind."

"Ok, ok, I was just teasing. Now run along, you'll be late for school." replied Derpy.

Dinky ran around the house scooping up her school work and pencils and placing the in her blue saddle bag. She turned to her mother and gave her a little wave. Derpy returned the wave while still lying back on the sofa, seeming to be completely care free. Dinky opened the door and walked out, letting it blow shut behind her. Derpy's attitude changed drastically. She shot up and walked over to the card. It was covered in small heart stickers and kisses. She let out an angry moan and walked up the table, where she sat upon a chair and rested her cheek on her foreleg.

"How come my daughter has a pony who loves her when no pony loves me?"

This question swirled around her head and was examined by each conflicting conscious in her mind. It didn't seem fair that someone so young would have a better love life than her.
