Chapter 1: News

May 8

Sunset Shimmer sits at her kitchen table poking at her eggs with her fork.

“Why the sad face Rai?” Moon asks her girlfriend as she sat down at their kitchen counter.

“I’m not really sad just stressed and tired.” Sunset says moving around some of the eggs and potatoes on her plate.

“I really think you need to see a doctor about this.” Moon says while to cut up her eggs. “Have you eaten anything yet?”

“No.”

“I think I’ll be sick if I eat something.”

“What do you think caused this?”

“Chemicals at the lab probably.” Sunset pinches the bridge of her nose.

“And you think chemicals at the lab caused this?”

“Well it makes the most sense. I mean I have been careful and I always wear my safety gear but something could still get through.”

“Are the chemicals really that bad? Should I be more worried about you at work?”

“No. most of what we work with is fine. Every now and then we use a toxic chemical in one of our reactions to create something else. The whole point is to end up with drugs so nothing is really harmful.”

“How about that yeast infection? Has that cleared up yet?”

“No.”

“Right.” The two women sit silent as Moon eats.

“So what are you stressed about?” Moon breaks the silence.

“Work.” Moon gestures for Sunset to elaborate. “I called in sick today and my boss wasn’t please. This is my third sick day in a month. I’m worried he is going to consider firing me. I really need my job.”

“Have you called the doctor's office yet?”

“No.” Moon gets up and walks over to where Sunset’s cellular phone is charging.

“What are you doing?”

“Getting your phone so you can call the doctor’s office.”
“Can’t it wait until after breakfast?” Sunset whines.

“What breakfast. You aren’t eating.”

“Fine!” Sunset sighs. She takes the phone from her girl friend and calls the office.

“This is Crystal Mountain Family Medicine how may I help you?”

“Hi. my name is Sunset Shimmer and I was wondering if you have any opening today?”

“What are you coming in for?”

“Umm I’ve been feeling sick a lot lately and I don’t feel great today. I want to come in and talk to one of the doctors about my symptoms and what caused it. Also I have a yeast infection that won’t go away.”

“Okay. I’m going to give you an hour block. So we have one at 10:30 and 1:30, 3:00 and 4:00. Any of those work for you?”

“Umm. I’ll take the one at 1:30.”

“Okay! I put you down for it. You will need to be here by 1:15. Anything else I can do for you?”

“That’s all I need. Thank you.” Sunset hangs up.

“1:15. I’ll be in class then. Do you think you can drive yourself there?” Moon gets up to wash her dish.

“Yeah. I can do that. But how are you going to get to class?”

“I’ll just take the bus.” Moon grabs Sunset’s plate. “I’m putting this in the fridge for later. You should go lay down. Also be sure to set an alarm in case you fall asleep.”

Sunset groans and rubs her eyes. She then gets up and slouches off to their bedroom.

A flat instrumental riff wakes up Sunset. She opens her eyes and notices that her head is on a book. A chemistry textbook. She sits up and unlocks her phone. She sees the alarm she set, 12:30 Doctors, and realized she needs to move fast. Jumping out of bead she rushes over to her dresser and starts putting out socks.
As she leaves her room Sunset hears her stomach grumble and she realizes she is hungry. Sunset dashes into the kitchen and opens the fridge and finds a Tupperware containing the breakfast Moon made for her. Mentally thanking Moon’s forward thinking, she snatches it up and stuffs herself before rushing to the door.

After checking in at the office Sunset is sent to produce a urine sample before sitting down. After a few minutes of waiting a nurse calls Sunset’s name. The nurse leads Sunset through the usual data gathering and then leads her to a room. After a few more minutes of waiting Sunset's usual doctor walks in.

“Good after noon miss Shimmer, what bring you in today?” Doctor Blossom says.

“Well I woke up not feeling good and my girlfriend insisted I Stay home from work and come in to see someone. I feel a lot better now though. However this was i think the third time this month i have had to miss work because i felt like shit, pardon my language.”

“Describe your symptoms please?”

“My muscles feel a little achy and I feel nauseous. Also really tired no matter how much sleep i get. I often have a headache. I don't know my body just doesn’t want to do anything and my mind feels distracted and foggy.”

“Do you have any thoughts on what had caused this?”

“Earlier today I suggested that it might be caused by being exposed to a chemical at the lab I work in but having given that more thought I realized that I haven’t worked with any of those chemicals for the last six months so i don’t know what is going on.” Sunset explains.

Doctor Blossom sits for a moment thinking. “I think I will need to perform a full exam and then we can go from there.”

“Alright.”

After several minutes of basic examination and questioning Doctor Blossom still has not found an explanation for Sunset’s symptoms. “All your vitals are in order. Everything looks and sounds good…” Blossom glances though the data that the nurse collected and stops at one figure. “Sunset did you know you gained over seven pounds since the last time you came in and saw Doctor Hooves two months ago?”

“No I did not. I am surprised. I feel like I have been eating less… well maybe not. I have been eating smaller meals but more of them.”

“Okay. I’m going to see is the results of the urine test are back.” Doctor Blossom walks out of the room. A few minutes later Sunset hears voices from the other side of the wall. After a brief dialogue that Sunset can’t make out the door opens.

“The results are negative. You do not a have a yeast infection.”

“Really? It feel just like before when I did.” Sunset says in a surprised tone.

“What exactly are your symptoms of that?”

“I have to pee a lot more and it stings.”

“Hmm… Well let’s move on to a abdominal and pelvic exam.” Doctor Blossom walked over to a cupboard and pulled out and exam robe. “I’ll be back in a minute.”

“Okay”

Doctor Blossom runs her hands across Sunsets upper belly. “Tell me if anything hurts or is tender okay?”

“Everything feels fine so far.”

Blossom moved her hands down towards Sunset’s pelvis.

“Oooh it is a little tender down here.”
“How so?”

“Sure I guess. Like muscles after a big workout. My last workout was just a long run. I didn’t do an ab workout…”

“Sunset have you been sexually active in the last few months?”

Sunset’s face turns red immediately. “Yes. Me and my girlfriend have sex maybe once or twice a month…”

“For how long?”

“Maybe a year?”

“And you haven’t been sexually active with any men?”

“I am not cheating!” Sunset almost shouts. “I’m sorry… why would you ask?”

“I think you are pregnant.” Blossom deadpans.

“What!?” Sunset sits up fast and turns to look Blossom in the face.

“You have many of the signs and your uterus feels like it has expanded. I think we should perform a pregnancy test.”

Sunset sits speechless. She is torn between shock and horror.

“But I can’t be! We already established this!”

“What do you mean?”

“I... two months ago I came to see Doctor Hooves to determine if the morning after pill i took worked and he said I wasn’t pregnant. I don’t understand.” Sunset says in a panicked voice.

“Why did you need a morning after pill?” Blossom is confused.

“I… I got raped at a dinner party. The hospital said they faxed you guys. I thought you knew.” Sunset says sadly putting a finger on the bridge of her nose.

Blossom flips through Sunset’s files. “It isn’t in here.” Blossom takes a deep breath. “Okay. Let me get this strait. Someone raped you and you when to the hospital. You used plan b contraceptive and sought confirmation that you weren’t pregnant, yet now you are showing unmistakable signs that you are.”

Sunset starts crying.

Blossom rubs Sunset’s back. “I’m sorry. Lets confirm that you are pregnant and then go from there.

Moon halls a heavy book bag into her apartment and immediately smells cooking onions and garlic. She walks into the kitchen and see Sunset stir-frying lots of vegetables in a pan.

“How was school?” Sunset’s voice is a little flat.

“It was fine. Today we got to ask questions about the final project. I got a bunch of books from the library I have a lot of reading to do.” moon pauses for a moment. “How was the doctors?”

“Let's talk after dinner.” Sunset replies in the same flat tone.

Dinner is completely uneventful. Moon tries to make small talk but Sunset stays quiet.

After moon dancer is done with dishes she joins Sunset in their bedroom. Sunset is sitting on their bed facing away from Moon.

“So care to enlighten me? What is going on Sunset? What did the doctor say?” moon tries to be both firm and sympathetic.

“I’m pregnant.” Sunset says in a strained voice.

Moon take a moment to process Sunset’s statement. “Okay.” she finally says.

Sunset sits quietly staring at a blank stretch of wall. Moon carefully watches Sunset waiting for her to speak. The two of them sit like that for several minutes.

Finally Moon can’t take it anymore. “Sunset we need to talk about this.”

Sunset turns to face Moon. “Where do we start? What is there to say?”

“Let's start at the beginning. How did this happen. Do you know how you got pregnant?” Moon does her best to be patient. She wants to be supportive and caring but what if Sunset cheated on her? What is sunset wants to leaver her and hook up with the father? Moon’s thoughts spin around in her head.

“The work party.” Sunset’s words pull Moon out of her downward spiral.

“What?”

“The work party in January. The one that my boss required me to go to.”

“But Doctor Hooves-”

“He was wrong. Doctor Blossom says that his errors were mostly based on his lack of experience in gynecology.” Sunset pinches the bridge of her nose.

“Okay so you are five months along? You don't look it at all.”

“Four months and yeah I’m Just not showing much right now.” Sunset’s tone is still rather flat and emotionless.

Moon sits trying to figure out what to say next. She is having a hard time reading Sunset.

“Moon.” Moon looks up and sees that Sunset has finally turned to face her. Their eyes meet. “Do you think we could have this child? Are you okay with keeping it?”

“Do we have a choice?”

“Yes. I could abort it, I could give it up or I could keep it.”

“Okay. And explain to me your thoughts on each option.”

“I really don’t want an abortion. I will reconsider if it is really what you want. I just… I have never liked the idea. I don’t know. I also am not comfortable giving up my child to foster care or something. I… just watching my sisters being mistreated by the system and being handed to bad parents, I don't think I can take that guilt.” Sunsets pauses to take a deep breath. “As for keeping it, well you know how much I want a family. Sure this is earlier than I wanted it. But it was always my plan to have a family with a partner I love.” Sunset looks into Moon’s eyes. “Please, let's have a family.”

“I… I don’t know if I’m ready. This is a big change Sunset.” Moon takes a deep breath. “But I agree that a family with you would be nice. I have always loved watching you help and play with little kids. I wouldn’t mind having some someday but now? I don’t know Rai. Are we really ready?”

“I don’t know. I... I’ve been thinking a lot about fate today. I have been wondering if this was meant to be.”

“Why do you think that? I mean isn’t this just luck of the draw?”

“It probably is. I don’t know. So which way are you leaning?”

“I… right now I mostly just want to support you. I don’t know. I think part of me wants to keep things the same. I mean I like stability and predictability. I’m torn. I don’t know. This is all so sudden. I feel like I need a few months to consider everything and come to the best conclusion, but I know we don’t have that kind of time.” Moon's voice is stressed. She wrings her hands and fidgets.

“So you don’t want to have it?” Sunset sounds sad.

“I don’t know!” Moon practically shouted. “I want to support you. I want to be a good girlfriend but I’m scared! I’m scared of change. I am scared that thinks won’t work out and it will be my fault and you’ll leave me. I’m scared i will be a bad mom. I’m afraid we will fail. Hell I’m even afraid everything will be perfect. I don’t know sunset i just don’t know.” Moon dissolves into tears.

“I’m sorry Moon. let's get some rest and talk more about this in the morning. Okay?” Sunset wraps her arms around her shaking girlfriend. Moon hugs back. The two take a deep breath together.

“We’ll figure this out.”
