Rainbow's mind was racing, like the images that were being displayed all around her. The ambulance tore down the road on the way to the hospital, and Rainbow was holding Fluttershy's hoof while trying to stay out of the way of the ponies that were keeping the pegasus stable,"Do you guys think she'll be okay?" Rainbow asked, her raspy voice sounding more hoarse than usual. The paramedic ponies looked at each other, one biting his lip. Rainbow saw this and knew not to repeat the question, knowing that she would not like the answer.
"Get ready boys, we're pulling up to the entrance!" The driver yelled, and the ambulance was stopped, and the back doors flew open, and Rainbow could suddenly hear the sirens coming from the vehicle she was in.
"Are you coming, Miss? I don't think you want to sit in there all day." A nurse asked, breaking Rainbow from her thoughts, the pegasus simply stood and followed the nurse into the building, where she was led to a waiting room. She was ready to cry, she had been able to hold herself together, but only because Fluttershy was still in her sights. Now, she couldn't see her, and the thought of not being able to make every choice about what happened to her, not being able to protect her, how she failed her, made it hard to hold her composure.
While she waited, Rainbow had nothing to think about except for the events she had witnessed in the past hour. She had planned a special date for the afternoon, one that ended with a candlelight picnic at the top of a hill that overlooked Ponyville. It was at that picnic that Rainbow had planned to propose to Fluttershy, and now she may never get to ask that question, much less receive an answer,'Stupid helicopter!' Rainbow thought bitterly, tears finally escaping her eyes and slipping down her cheeks,'Why did it have to fly today- NO! Why didn't I push her out of the way!? Why didn't I save her!? That should be me in that room, not her! She doesn't deserve this!!' The pegasus squeezed her eyes closed, trying, and failing to push the accusing thoughts from her mind. She pleaded with herself, repeating in her mind that the accident was not her fault. Her heart knew that Fluttershy would never blame her for this, but her head still did, as forced thoughts of the worst possible outcomes floated through her mind.
An hour had passed, and a doctor finally approached the cyan pegasus," Ms. Dash?"
"Y-Yes?" Rainbow asked, wiping her eyes before looking at the doctor,"Is she okay?"
"She is alive, although in critical condition. Both of her wings are broken, her right back leg is broken, she has many small cuts across her body, and a few large ones we had to sew up. We aren't sure if she'll make it through the night, so you may come and see her." The doctor said as he led Rainbow back to a room, where Fluttershy was laying,"I'll leave you to it." He said quietly as he closed the door. Rainbow approached the bedside and sat down.
"I'm sorry...why did I let this happen to you. It's all my fault..." After looking her marefriend over, she saw that her mane was shorter, and jagged at the edges. Rainbow remembered how Fluttershy had been tangled up in the propellers of the helicopter. The last words Rainbow had heard from her was her own name.
'Dashie...'
Hours past. Rainbow looked at the clock to see it was around two am. She sighed. The room was quiet, minus the beeping heard from the heart monitor by the hospital bed. Rainbow Dash couldn't remove her eyes from her marefriend, who was only hanging on by a thread. Although what happened was an accident, Rainbow Dash couldn't accept the fact that she could lose the one mare that meant so much to her, the only mare that she ever truly loved, and wanted to marry. Knowing that may never happen, Rainbow prayed that the heart monitor would never stop beeping,"I love you Fluttershy...If you get through this, I promise that I will never let anypony hurt you again." Warm tears rolled down her face as she places her hoof over Fluttershy's and gently laid her head down beside one of Fluttershy's broken wing,"I know you can make it, you're strong."
Rainbow Dash woke up with a small yawn, looking around, the scene was the same as before her nap. Well, mostly. The sun was now up in place of the moon, and the clock on the bedside table now read nine o'clock. Suddenly, the memories of yesterday came flooding back to her,'We aren't sure if she'll make it through the night.' As soon as those words flooded her mind, her attention flew to her marefriend, who was still asleep, but her heart monitor was still beeping. That beeping sound was music to Rainbow's ears. She had made it through the night.
"You truly are the strongest mare I know..." Rainbow whispered, kissing Fluttershy's cheek,"Don't leave me..." She added, after a moment of silence.
"I don't think she will." Nurse Redheart's voice echoed through Rainbow's mind, she turned quickly to look at the mare, who had just entered the room,"I have been looking over her charts, and I continued to check her monitors all night. She is looking much better, though we aren't quite sure when she will wake up."
"Thank you."
"You're welcome, also, you have a few visitors." Nurse Redheart finished as she let Twilight, AJ, Rarity, and Pinkie into the room, and closing the door behind them.
"How is she doing Dashie?" Pinkie asked as the four mares approached their friend's bedside.
"Fine, we just aren't sure when she'll wake up, as you've heard."
"We're all here for you both Rainbow, and we aren't leaving until you ponies do," Twilight added, sitting down next to Rainbow.
A few hours past and the girls had gotten Rainbow to talking and even having a little fun as PInkie cracked many medical jokes and Rarity used her creativity to make the room less dreary and boring,"Hey Rainbow, what's that under yer wing?" Applejack asked, pointing her hoof at Rainbow's side.
"Oh...it's uh..." A small blush formed on the pegasi's face as she pulled a small box out from under her wing and opened it, to reveal a plain, golden ring inside with a silver chain going through it," I just wish that I had gotten the chance to ask her yesterday..." Rainbow sighed as she stood and walked over to Fluttershy's bedside,"But the moment I do, I will ask her to marry me, because she is the reason why I wake up in the morning, and why I try so hard every single breathing moment of my life." Rainbow spoke quietly as she lifted the necklace out of the box and placed it around Fluttershy's neck,"I just know she'll say-"
"I do."
Everypony gasped, and Rainbow's eyes widened, she slowly looked down to see two, beautiful teal eyes staring at her,"F...Fluttershy...?" The yellow pegasus smiled, and looked around her friends briefly, before returning her gaze to her lover.
"I wouldn't miss my wedding for the world." She giggled, and Rainbow's eyes filled with tears of joy, as she leaned down and kissed Fluttershy, who gladly returned the warm embrace.
