Zomponies chapter 1.
The light brown unicorn slowly walked down the deserted street in Ponyville, his eyes lime green scanning the area of any immediate danger. His gray and green mane draped slightly, dirty from his inability to shower. He looked up at the everlasting night, and sighed thinking about how quickly this happened, and how things could have been different had Princess Celestia and Princess Luna survived the mysterious virus.
When the chaos first started, the virus killed those it infected, but within 24 hours, it evolved, and started taking control of those it infected, making them into walking corpses. Luckily, neither of the princesses came back to life, but their deaths alone caused mass panic, and with corpses starting to walk around, things began to quickly spire out of control.
Zathra’s day dream was suddenly interrupted by a shrill scream, his ears perking up as he looked over at the direction it came from, not sure whether to run away or see if he could help. His thoughts were once again interrupted by a second scream this one louder than before. The fact she could still be alive pushes him to his decision, and he bolts off towards the source.
Zathra soon reaches his destination, and his worst fears come true. There was a yellow Pegasus up in a tree, a terrified expression on her face as 3 zombie ponies surround it, two being earth ponies but the third being a unicorn.
The virus had affected unicorns in a strange way. For some reason they were sometimes mutated, making them both horrifying and even more dangerous than normal zombies. Unfortunately for Zathra, this unicorn was one of the ones with a mutation, her left hoof had a huge, axe shaped bone jutting out of it, and she was using it to hack away at the tree.
Zathra wondered why the Pegasus didn’t simply fly away, but after getting a closer look, it was obvious by the blood dripping from her back, that it was because she was missing her left wing. Maybe the unicorn hacked it off? It didn’t right now though, he had to make a choice, fast. Did he run before the three zombies noticed him, and live with the fact that he just let her die? Or did he try to help her? Could he even help her? Maybe the unicorn would hack her head off, and kill her quickly?
As he stood there, frozen, he was jolted back to the situation at hand by the sound of a different voice. “Fluttershy!” a blue pony crashed down from the sky, her back hooves crashing into the unicorns skull with a sickening cracking noise, before it slumped over, dead. She grunted in pain and staggered slightly after she touched the ground, clearly she hadn’t expected her kick to hurt her own legs. Before she could get air born again, the earth pony on the left grabbed her, and she tried to
fight back, but the right one quickly closed in as well.
As if on pure instinct, Zathra charged towards the earth pony closing in on her, and smashed its head in using his hoof hammer, his powerful strike making a noticeable dent in its head as it slumps over. Zathra turned around to the rainbow manned Pegasus to help, but when he turned around; he was greeted by the sight of her smashing its head in.
After she was sure it was head, she slowly stood up, but quickly buckled under her own weight, grunting in pain from her most likely broken leg. “d-dammit, stupid leg…” She grunted and looks up at the yellow Pegasus, who was now slowly climbing down the tree.
Zathra whipped his hammer off on the ground, and looks at the two Pegasus. “Are you two okay?” The blue Pegasus quickly gave him a hateful glare, stabbing him with her eyes. “Do we /look/ like we’re okay?! Both my legs might be broken and her damn wing is missing!”
The yellow Pegasus whimpered as the cyan pony yelled, and whispered something barely auditable. “Pl-please don’t yell… h-he was just trying to be nice… a-and you’ll attract more of… those things…”
Zathra wasn’t sure how to react, but he noticed the yellow Pegasus’s words had calmed down her friend, so he decided now was the best time to introduce himself. “I’m Zathra… I’m sorry, you’re right, that was a stupid question. Do you two have somewhere you’re living?” the Pegasus looked at each other for a moment, then the cyan Pegasus responds. “I’m rainbow dash, and this is Fluttershy, and I don’t know if we can trust you enough to tell you that” Zathra frowned a bit, but before he can respond, the unicorn begins to shamble up, using it’s axed hoof to get up easier. Rainbow dash’s kick must not have killed it. He brings his hood up, and slams it into the unicorns head. Even though it drops, he smashes her head in a few more times, making sure she was dead, before getting back up, and smiling at the two Pegasus.
“look… if you don’t want me to stay with you, that’s fine, but can you at least let me help you back to where you’re staying. I doubt you’ll make it by crawling, especially with the smell of blood following you” the two mares get close to each other, and whisper for a bit, before breaking their mini huddle. Rainbow dash speaks once more. “Alright, we’ve decided that if you help us back, you can stay for at least one night”
Zathra smiles, and then lays down as close to rainbow as he can, letting her climb up onto him. He waits until she has a good grip, and then he stands up, flashing Fluttershy a smile. “Lead the way?” she nods, and begins to nervously walk towards the town hall. Zathra follows her closely, his mind focused on his thoughs. How many more ponies were there already? How many more ponies survived? Would he be able to get a decent meal? Suddenly he felt the mare on his back weaken her grip, and he looked back at her, finding her to be asleep. He walked carefully, not wanting to wake the sleeping mare from her slumber. He turned his thoughts back to what awaited him, or rather, who awaited him.
