The Encounter (A Harmony Quest backstory)
Affection
Previous ChapterNext ChapterI'll be honest with you. I've had a crush on Twilight for a looooooong time.
As I mentioned, my past was terrible. I was always inferior to those around me. I was isolated. I was alone. I couldn't defend myself without being a bad person.
But that spark of hope- Turned my life around.
When I first met her, I never knew we would end up being so close. She has always been my best friend. We used to text and chat around like crazy during the night. I would teach her things about us humans and she would offer me her friendship and a bit of help on my schoolwork in return.
It was when Twilight and I met that our friendship started to bloom. I never thought I would see the light of having friends. Yet, here I am- I'm surrounded by many friends. In fact, they're my family. I had someone to accompany me, a shoulder to cry on when I'm down.
We had so many good memories together. It's fun teaching them about my world. And it's been great to explore the land I've dreamed of going to. Particularly me and Twilight, we spent and did everything together. And of course, Frisk and Asriel prepared me for the battle I wanted to win. I've seen what their normal lives are; They're actually very friendly. People think they are powerful and kinda a bit scary in one way, but I bet if you would stick around and enjoy a relaxing afternoon with them, you'll see they're very easy-going.
I wanted to thank her. It's her support that kept me from possible suicide. I wished I could just walk up to her and say how grateful I am and how much I needed her. Okay, I did that. The thing is... Her personality is so me. She's so caring and friendly. And I like how she takes things seriously sometimes. I started being drawn to her. I don't know why at the time.
Every night, I couldn't sleep really well. I was so shy about confessing how I feel about Twilight. It was after a few months since the war ended that I knew the reason:
I love her.
I really, really loved my best friend. I knew we were friends meant to be. And I know she likes me too. I just couldn't utter the question out, though. I wanted to take that step on our friendship and make it into a relationship instead. She was a companion to me.
And I knew just how I'm going to surprise her.
One day, Asriel was reading in the castle library, when he found a specific book that he put on the shelf. It was a scrapbook, that not only consists photographs of the two growing up together through the years, but also the memories of the two establishing friendships with ponykind.
'(Laughs) I forgot how cute my sister was before she started to fight,' he thought, looking at a picture of him and Frisk together.
As he flipped through the pages, from their childhood years to teenage years, from their first victory to their encounter with ponykind... Memories flashed left and right.
On one specific page, he stopped.
'Huh? What's this?' Asriel thought.
That one page had a really interesting name. It was going to be a picture celebrating their victory of the war. Funny enough, it's not there, but there's a letter. Asriel expected the photo won't be there, but the letter was something surprising.
He opened the letter in curiosity. It was from Frisk, and as he started to read the letter, he could imagine Frisk up there, patiently waiting for his thoughts.
'Dear my sweetest brother, Asriel,
If you're reading this, I'm glad to know you are safe. Don't worry about me. I am now living in a better place. How have you been? It's been a while since our victory if I recall correctly.
How are my friends up to? Are they okay? I really hope so. I miss you all so much up here. I wonder... How's Twilight? Yeah, I really miss her too. She's my best friend. I bet she's pretty depressed without me. I'm curious now, is Nathan getting along with her well? I know they are really close and I start to think they are more than just friends, maybe... Maybe they're a couple? Haha, just kidding. Don't tell her I said that!
I just wanted to drop some lines while I have time. I'm really alone without you all. Are you guys getting over my passing? I know it's hard to take in, but don't fret and be so blue about it! I sacrificed myself for an incredible cause. If I didn't do it, all of you would be gone from history! Of course, I don't want that to happen. I love you all dearly, I would never allow something that crazy affect you.
Asriel... Don't tell anyone about this next thing I'm going to tell you.
To be honest... I love you. I love and care about you more than anything else. The day I saw my sweet brother, I knew we will get along very well. I started to get more and more drawn to you as we grew up together. I never told you this, but I've had a really huge affection for you since before the war. We both needed each other by our side and we loved doing everything together. It was great spending time with you when I still lived. It's too late now, I see. Even so, don't give up. Find someone new! There's no telling what the future holds.
I'd love to talk to you more soon. I know you can't reply to me, I just wanted to express this to you, just a little final goodbye. Or... Maybe there's a way to bring me back? I'm sure you'll all figure something out. As for how you'll do it? Well... Let's just say it's going to be something that will change human history forever. I'll let you figure this riddle out on your own.
For now, keep everything I told you a secret, okay? I know you will. :) Just remember, Azzy. I love you all until the very end.'
Asriel could imagine how much tears his sister cried while writing it. He was right; She did cry a bit at the last sentence.
'Your loving friend always and your sweetest sister, Frisk Dreemur.'
He started shaking the paper, tears coming out his eyes. As it dripped endlessly onto the letter, he covered his face and sobbed.
'(Cries) I love you too, Frisk...' He cried, collapsing to the carpet on the floor. 'I don't know how you reached out to me, but... (cries) I miss you so much, sister... I wish I could save you, and help you come back to life... But how is that possible?'
I entered the room.
'Asriel? Are you alright?' I asked.
Seeing him not replying due to all the tears, I picked up the letter beside the poor goat boy. But my action was disrupted.
'No! Don't read it!' Asriel cried. 'Please... It's a secret nobody can know...'
I was confused. 'Hey... How do you expect me to comfort you when I don't even know what's going on?'
'(Sniff) There's so many... So many things that all of you mustn't know about...'
I helped Asriel over to a nearby comfy chair, and let him calm down for a bit before asking anything else.
'Feeling better?'
Asriel smiled a bit. 'Yeah, much better.'
'So are you going to tell me what's happening? I heard you crying just now.'
He started to feel really shy and started doing awkward hand gestures. 'If I tell you this... Do you promise not to tell anyone before I say it's okay?'
I zipped my mouth shut and signalized I'm not gonna tell anyone that I know the secret. Well, at least for now.
'Okay...' He took a deep breath, handing me the letter. 'Just read it.'
'Geez, man,' I finally said. 'That's really heartbreaking.'
'I know...' Asriel replied, wanting to cry again.
I thought for a bit, and then an idea that nobody in the world would ever think of doing, a preposterous idea that only someone that has the power to do it would ever experiment, popped into my mind.
I put my arm around Asriel. 'What if... There's a way to bring her back?'
Asriel just shook his head. 'Oh, please. That's not even scientifically possible! Not even present technology can do that!'
'That is true...' I stopped. 'For a normal person.'
'What do you mean?'
'But first... I want you to do something.'
I whispered his request to Asriel excitedly.
'Are you sure about this? It's not gonna be my fault if we end up making Twilight even depressed than she already is.' enquired Asriel.
But I just grinned and crossed my arms with confidence.
'Just trust me, Azzy.'
So that night, when everypony was sleeping, Asriel carefully crept over to Twilight's bedroom, hoping to find what he's looking for. He stayed absolutely silent to not wake up the dreaming princess.
'(Giggles) Frisk, stop it!' She said in her sleep, looking like she's getting tickled in her dreams.
Asriel tried so hard not to blow his cover.
'I really don't want to know what in the name of Celestia she's dreaming about,' he thought, smiling as he looked at her.
He turned to the shelf beside her bed and very gently opened one of the drawers. Twilight turned for a second, and he froze in place before continuing. A while later, he found the thing I wanted.
'The pendant he gave to her as a present...' Asriel thought, taking it out. 'But for what?'
When he closed the drawer and wanted to leave the room, he accidentally made a sound as he closed the door.
'(Yawns) Was it just me or...?' Twilight opened her eyes.
Asriel nearly cussed (Not going to put what he said here), and quickly slammed the door shut.
'(Breathing) Oh, for Chara's sake...' He said, relieved.
After he was sure the princess went back to sleep, he took the pendant out of his pocket and had a sigh of relief.
'Twilight, sorry I have to do this,' Asriel thought.
At the same night, Asriel woke me up to break the news.
'Psst, Nathan!' He whispered, 'I got it, wake up!'
I saw the pendant and smiled.
'Perfect,' I replied, taking it. 'The reason why I needed this... Do you remember what you put inside this locket?'
'Her gold soul, correct?'
I opened the lock, revealing the shimmering heart inside.
'I have analyzed this soul secretly countless times when you guys are asleep. That's why sometimes I look tired even after I woke up. The results were stunning; I have never seen such an incredible heart containing so much magic- So much, it survived Frisk's sacrifice. It was no ordinary soul.' I explained.
'Why do we need the soul in the first place?'
I had an idea: An idea that nobody in the history of mankind has ever thought possible.
'This soul...' I began. 'Legend has it that, before she died, the goddess of the light used it as a last hope that she can return to this world. Frisk Dreemur is the subject that she chose. I have a theory: If this soul's magic is so strong... And can survive any damage that we know... And if this soul only belongs to Frisk- And Frisk only...'
Asriel hasn't clicked yet. 'Then what?'
I grinned. 'If we have a body of a pony... And replace their heart with this one... Is the magic contained strong enough to control the pony's mind, and potentially revive our dear friend?'
There was a moment of silent thinking between us.
'Come on, that's preposterous!' Asriel laughed. 'How are we gonna even get the pony body we need in the first place!?'
'I'm glad you asked,' I kindly told him.
A second later, I was using a unique video game superpower: Something that even I never thought would be possible.
'I have the ability to create how people look before they are born now, and in this case- I'll be able to make exactly what you asked for before we revive Frisk.' I continued explaining. 'Long story short, it's basically "Create a Character" in games.'
The goat boy had his mouth dropped in shock.
'How do you even get these powers!?'
I laughed. 'I dunno. It's in my blood. But, this is something I'll take care of. I'll keep the soul, return the pendant to Twilight and she wouldn't suspect a thing happening.'
Asriel was extremely amazed and excited about his experiment.
'You have the best intentions, don't you?' He asked playfully.
My face went a bit red. 'I'm doing this... Because I know Frisk loves you. I know she would love to see you again.'
'Are you sure...?' He continued, thinking that I'm lying.
'Yes, I'm sure! What do you think I'm doing this for? Because I-' I stuttered. 'Never mind! Pretend I didn't say anything, see you in the morning!' I immediately drifted into sleep.
Asriel was filled with confusion as he left and wanted to go to sleep.
'Hmm...' He thought, grinning. 'I think he has a way bigger reason why he's doing this...'
The next day, as I was gonna wake Asriel up so they can carry out the experiment, I ran into Twilight.
'Hi, Twilly! Feeling good?' I asked.
She giggled. 'I'm great, thanks. Though... Something's on my mind for the whole night.'
'What is it?'
'I head some rattling sounds in my room when I was asleep... What could've happened? There's no way anypony would steal from me, right?'
I gasped. I knew it's Asriel.
'I dunno... Maybe it's just you, Spark.' I laughed, rubbing her cheeks playfully.
Twilight laughed. 'Haha, stop it! It's so ticklish! I'll see you around later then? I have some stuff to do today.'
'Yeah, me too. So... I'll be off for now.' I replied.
As the two of us walked past each other, both of us were secretly blushing.
'(Sighs happily) He's just so sweet and kind, just like me,' Twilight thought.
I folded my arms, supporting my blushing face with one.
'We'll probably sorta just... Happen, won't we?' He asked himself.
In fact, Asriel was already up for their experiment.
'Ah, good morning Nathan!' He got up from his bed. 'Ready for it?'
'Born ready,' I replied, 'I have been thinking about so many ideas of how Frisk should look like in my dreams last night! Now, I'll explain how this is going to work while we get to the lab, which can only be accessed by myself.'
I immediately opened a portal.
'Come with me, it's safe.'
When we got to the other side, it looked somewhat familiar to Asriel. Then the answer became obvious.
'Isn't this the lab from the game Undertale that I am kinda in?' He asked.
I nodded. 'Yup! After I completed the game, they went free so the lab is pretty much abandoned! I've been testing on the soul for quite a while.'
I walked over to an elevator, which goes down to the real lab.
'Just like in the game, she experimented with the soul in the true lab, so follow me!'
We got down and got to a specific room in the lab. There was a bed, with a lot of mechanical stuff around it, and next to the bed, I was creating how Frisk will look like.
'So, I was wondering if you have any suggestions how she should look like,' I asked, swiping around the choices.
Asriel thought for a bit.
'I am a little bored with her hair color for a while... It's time for a change, maybe?' He suggested.
'Anything else?'
'Not much, I already like how she looks,' He said, blushing.
I laughed. 'I know you love your sister. That's why I want to bring her back to you when I thought of the idea. It's now or never anyway.'
As they were talking about other things, I finished Frisk's pony.
'Great! Now, one last step before I create the pony...' I said to myself, taking out Frisk's gold heart.
'So this is what it's for?'
I was connecting the heart to a system that could recognize the soul's identity so that when the pony is created, it would identify itself as Frisk Dreemur.
'Excellent, once I create it, it'll be just like Frisk, and she'll have all her memories intact.'
Asriel was excited and he started squealing for joy. 'I can't believe this is really happening, my sister is gonna get revived!'
I glanced at Asriel, flashed a smile, and had my hand on the lever to initiate the magic spell to revive the legend.
I smiled and started to blush. '(Chuckles) Twilight... This is for you, my angel.'
I flipped the switch, and a lot of electricity started buzzing here and there on the system. I just gazed in amazement as the control panel started sending energy to the golden heart, transferring the information of the soul to the new pony. After a few minutes, the pony body started to glow with a gold aura. It released a magical shockwave, that flung us back a bit.
And so, the first-ever revival of a human or a pony has successfully been done!
The new pony opened her eyes. She could hear Asriel merely calling to her from beside.
'Frisk... Frisk! Can you hear me?' Someone called out.
She recognizes the voice: Asriel Dreemur.
'It's pretty familiar... Wait...' She thought.
The pony opened her eyes and woke up with a scream that scared both Asriel and me.
'(Breathing) Asriel? Is that you there?' She looked at Asriel.
I beamed. 'Yes! It worked! Hey Asriel!' I turned to him, only to see him not where he was. Then I turned to the new pony and started to giggle a bit.
'Aw, now that's just cute.' I thought.
In fact, Asriel was already cuddling with his sister, both of them crying tears of joy as they reunited.
'(Sobs) Frisk... You're finally back! I missed you so much!' Asriel cried.
She smiled as her loving brother pulled her into his arms, even though she's a pony at the moment.
'(Laughs) I miss you too, Azzy,' She kissed him. 'I love you so much, and same with you, right?'
He nodded, and let go. I turned to her.
'So... Frisk, it's you, right?' I asked.
She nodded and took a look at herself. 'Wow... Am I a pony now? That's awesome! Now, Twilight and I will be much closer!'
Frisk was reborn as a pony. Her skin color stayed orange-yellow, but her hair changed. Her natural hair is mostly blue, with vertical magenta and yellow stripes, just like Twilight's mane. She also had a dazzling bright blue tail.
'You look amazing, sister!' Asriel squeaked.
She giggled. 'I know! My mane is so colorful now!'
'You're gonna have to thank me for that, for I was the one who made this possible, not to brag,' I laughed, winking at Frisk.
She got off the bed and wanted to hug the one who saved her. It's not as easy as she thought since now she has to get used being a pony.
'That was a bit awkward, wasn't it?' She asked.
'You'll need some time to get used to this.' I suggested. 'Oh, and Frisk... Do you realize what kind of pony you are?'
Frisk actually had both horns and wings, she became an alicorn!
'Wait... I have wings! That's perfect!' She spread her beautiful wings up.
Asriel smiled and messed a bit with Frisk's mane. 'You're just like Twilight, you're an alicorn!'
She was really excited.
'There's a little question...' Frisk said. 'I am glad I got revived, but... Why now though?'
I started to explain his plan to her in a whisper.
'Okay, so basically, I want to surprise our best friend Twilight for her birthday. I know, I know, it's still quite a while. But, you'll need time to get used to this and I want you to be able to get used to being a pony before I decide to tell Twilight.'
Asriel was curious and interested, so he wanted to secretly listen to what I was saying.
'Hey, Asriel!' I nudged him out of the way since I didn't want to hear what I'm saying.
'Okay! You can whisper to Frisk about your little... secret,' He smiled.
'What secret?' Frisk asked.
I blushed a bit but changed the subject. 'Nothing! Anyway, Frisk...' I continued whispering.
'(Laughs) That's a great idea!' She said excitedly.
'I'll tell all of our friends about it except Twilight, so the surprise won't be broken.' I explained. 'Well... Hopefully, they won't ruin it, especially Pinkie.'
'Yeah, we all know how much of a big mouth she is,' Asriel followed.
Frisk giggled. 'So... Do I just stay hidden for now?'
'If you like to,' I said. 'I'll tell everypony first. Twilight said she had something to do a few days later, so while she's gone, I'm gonna gather the group and reveal you being a pony.'
'Thanks, guys. I'm so glad I'm back, I can't wait to see my friend,' She replied.
Asriel played with her mane again and hugged her. 'It will be a while, but just keep yourself hidden from her.'
A few days later, the news was released but has been kept a secret to the general public. All of her friends were shocked, but everyone was so cheerful to have their famous legend and friend back.
As for my plan, Frisk is getting used to being a pony and using wings and magic, thanks to Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie and Starlight Glimmer. She was a fast learner; She got used to the ropes quickly. It's only the hard spells that she is unable to do for now.
Throughout the next few months, for whatever reason, Frisk was able to completely avoid Twilight, even though she messed up her teleportation spells! She really didn't want the news to be spoiled before her big day.
The day before the surprise, Twilight was hanging out at the top of her castle, watching the sunset. I came over coincidentally. Seeing her alone, I wanted to talk to her for a bit.
'Hey, Spark.' I said, tapping her back.
She turned and smiled. 'Oh, hey Nathan, what is it?'
I sat down to start the conversation, smiling.
'Don't you feel... Alone most of the time?'
She nodded. 'Yeah, I do. It's lonely without Frisk. Why'd you ask?'
I started to blush. 'Well... I know it's been some time since the war ended and... That happened. But, you can't keep that bad memory in your mind forever, right? I know it's hard, losing someone you love. Don't be so sad all the time, you're still doing well recently.'
'I'm trying to get over it recently,' Twilight replied. 'Honestly... There's something I want to tell you, Nate.'
'Go for it,' I said.
'You know... We've met for a long time. And... I was always so delighted to know that being a friend of yours really helped you change your view of life. We used to be pretty different but through this experience... I only just realized how much of a friend you were to me. You were unique and special, unlike the other humans who like such awful thoughts in their mind.'
I chuckled. 'I may or may not have repaid you by being so kind to you after the war ended.'
'(Laughs) I think so too.' She laughed. “But, really... When I first knew about you, I thought being your friend would be a challenge- We belong to two different races. And it’s not like our tribes met for a long time like the others in our pony world. Now... Look how far we’ve come. I know, we’ve had our quarrels along the way. However... Our friendship was such a beautiful thing and such a new experience for me.”
I nodded and put my arm around Twilight.
“I feel the exact same way, Twilight,” I replied. “I was greedy for attention, yes... But through time... I was yearning for friendship and care. You gave me that. No one else in real life, excluding my online friends, have been able to touch my heart so warmly and I’ve never had such a close friend. I feel... I feel happy, no matter what I’m doing. So long as I’m with you.”
I stroke her fluffy ear and gave her cheeks a little rub. She closed her eyes and welcomed the soothing sensation. When I looked off into the sunset, my buddy leaned on my shoulder, and hugged me by the neck. She started becoming sleepy and made a few adorable purrs as she snuggled against me.
I kindly rubbed and patted my best friend’s head.
'I wonder... I'm not really ready to say it, but..'
Twilight sat back up, blushing as she turned her head to look at me lovingly. Seeing that, I started blushing too. However, just before I confessed, I lost the words when a breeze flew by. It interrupted my thoughts, and I decided that I wasn’t brave enough yet, so I held onto my affection once more.
'Mhmm?' Twilight asked, showing me a charming face.
'Oh, right. Spark... I know I've lost many things from the war, including my parents. You'll... You'll never leave me, right?' I asked.
She held my hand and put me under her wing.
'No way. I won't leave my best friend alone,' She promised.
Both of us held each other's hand and watched the beautiful sunset. I was blushing the whole time, so it wasn't long until Twilight realized I had something in mind.
'What's wrong, Nate?'
I covered my face, trying to hide it. 'Nothing! It's just...' I almost slipped my tongue. “I mean, thanks for being my best friend, Twi. I... I like you. Really.”
She smiled and leaned on me.
'(chuckles) Aw, Nathan... I like you too,' Twilight said.
'Awww, that's adorable!' Asriel whispered to Frisk.
In reality, the Dreemurs were secretly watching the two being cute together. Frisk was taking photos and shipping them.
'Haha, Nathan and Twilight, sitting on a tree~ k-i-s-s-i-n-g~' Frisk giggled. Asriel started laughing too.
'Actually, Frisk... I have a question,' He said.
'What's that?'
He blushed. 'We've been siblings since birth, and we grew up together. I don't see anyone who will know you as much as I do. I never told you this but... I've always had feelings for you, sister.'
She gasped. 'Really?'
Asriel nodded and hugged his sister.
'You don't understand how much I loved you as a sibling. I hope we can both stay together as long as we live. You're already a part of my life, but I wish we can be so much more.' He explained, cuddling Frisk.
Frisk cried a bit and hugged her brother.
'(Chuckles) I love you too, Azzy...' She cried, kissing him.
As he was going to kiss back, he heard the steps of me and Twilight coming over.
'Quick! Turn invisible!' He advised.
They walked over like nothing happened, and soon as they went down the stairs, Frisk showed herself and both of them showed a sigh of relief.
She just clicked. 'Wait, tomorrow is Twilight's birthday!'
'Don't worry, we've got everything planned. Just relax, honey.' He slipped his tongue, and immediately covered his mouth.
She blushed. '(Laughs) Aww, you're so sweet!'
They both ended up laughing for a long time.
