Chapters Chapter 1 - A New Beginning
Twilight has not had an easy life by any means. Having been orphaned on the streets since she was a filly she’s had to survive on what she could find, the charity of others, and to her shame steal when she got desperate enough. It was late into the fall and winter was only a stone’s throw away. She clothed herself in what she could to keep warm, although winter in Canterlot wasn’t anything new to her having gone through it for years now and she likes to think it’s made her more resilient especially since it gets colder here than most places from being so high up a mountain. Despite her situation Twilight always had an interest in learning managing to teach herself from books and other things ponies have thrown away over the years. It wasn’t as good as a real education but she wasn’t stupid. Also do to her life of poverty she’s never been able to fine her talent and get her cutie mark.
The sun was setting and street activity was low as this was the time of day when most ponies have returned home from work but before others went out for the nightlife. Twilight was sitting just inside an alleyway hoping to catch some passersby that would spare some bits. She then noticed a pegasus stallion as they started to walk by. “Excuse me sir but could you spare a few bits?”
The stallion stopped and looked at her. “Sorry I don’t do charity.” He then looked her over a little. “But I wouldn’t be opposed to you earning some bits by performing a service for me.”
“What do you mean?”
He took a quick look around and saw no other ponies nearby. “You know you do something for me and get paid for it.”
He took some steps towards her and she backed up a little starting to feel uncomfortable. “Like what?”
He leaned in and gave a smile. “Use your imagination.”
It was in that moment it clicked and she had an idea of what he wanted. “Oh no I-I’m fine.” She was about to leave but he wasn’t taking no for an answer and pounced getting on top of her. “Hey, get off, HELP!”
“Shut up and don’t make this harder than it has to be. You had to be wearing clothes.” Twilight did her best to try to fight him off but he was much stronger and she was so scared she couldn’t concentrate on using her magic. She started crying and screamed hoping somepony would hear. The stallion was wrapped in an aura then ripped off of her and was thrown into the wall, thankfully before things went any further.
“Get away from her you fiend!” Twilight looked over and saw a well-dressed unicorn stallion with a coach in the street behind him. “Now leave before I summon the guard.” The pegasus was pissed at the interruption but didn’t want to stick around in case the guard did show up and flew off. The unicorn went to Twilight and offered a hoof. “Are you alright Miss? Did he hurt you?”
She took his hoof and he helped her up. She started wiping her eyes. “I-I’m fine, and no. I’ve just never been in that situation before.”
“Well it was a good thing I was passing by when I did. I’ll make sure to have his description given to the authorities. My name is Fancypants.”
She was starting to calm down feeling safer in his company. “I’m Twilight Sparkle.”
“A pleasure to meet you Twilight. Now if you don’t mind me asking how old are you? You seem rather young to be wondering the streets by yourself.”
“Uhh eighteen or nineteen I think.”
“You think?”
“I’m not sure when I was born. I’ve been living alone out here for as long as I can remember.”
“That sounds horrible having to survive out here since you were a filly.”
“Well thank you for showing up when you did. I should get going.”
She was about to walk away. “I wonder would you be interested in coming back to my home for the evening? You look like you could use a good meal, bed, and…” *sniff, sniff* “bath.”
Twilight couldn’t believe what she just heard. No pony has ever made an offer like that before. Is this really happening? “Sure, that sounds great.”
“Splendid.” Fancypants walked back to his coach and Twilight followed. Once they were inside he signaled the driver to continue and they started on down the street. “So you never knew your parents?”
“That’s right. It’s just been me, although most ponies I meet are decent folk. I’ve met some shady characters before but whoever that was back there is the worst I’ve ever encountered.”
“Have you had any sort of schooling?”
“No I haven’t.”
“Well you have quite a vocabulary for somepony that’s un-…that hasn’t had an education.”
“I’ve managed to teach myself a few things over the years mostly with books I found that others have discarded. I love reading, it helps take my mind off of…well everything.”
“Impressive, it’s not easy to self-learn especially if you had to teach yourself literacy.”
“That was a little challenging but I managed.”
“So what’s your talent in?”
Twilight looked away. “I’m not sure yet.”
“Oh you don’t have your mark. I’m sorry I shouldn’t have brought the subject up.”
“It’s okay, you didn’t know.”
A few minutes passed and the driver pulling the coach spoke up. “Sir we’ll be at your estate momentarily.”
“Ah good to hear.” They passed through the gate and Twilight looked out the window. Now she thought Fancypants was well off based on his appearance but it was soon clear that he had bits to burn as they pulled up to a large three story manor. “Here we are, home sweet home.”
Twilight was in awe for a moment. “Umm what do you do for a living?”
“I deal in politics mostly but I also have investments in some business ventures that net quite a profit. Now let’s journey inside.”
They made their way up to and through the door with the inside looking just as lavish as the out. Then a butler unicorn with a grey coat and mane strolled up to them. “Welcome home sir.” He then looked over and saw Twilight. “And who is this?”
“Silver Platter this is Twilight Sparkle. She’s my guest. Could you go and fetch Dusty for me?”
“Of course.”
He left and a couple minutes later a pegasus maid with a white coat and black mane walked up. “You wanted to see me sir.”
“Yes this is Twilight she’ll be staying as a guest. Run a bath and help her get cleaned up.”
“As you wish.”
“Good I’m going to go have a word with the chefs about dinner. When you two are done meet me in the dining room.”
Fancypants then strolled off. “Alright Twilight follow me.” Dusty led her to the second floor and they went down a hallway passing the occasional servant that would take a glance at Twilight. “I’m Feather Duster but everypony just calls me Dusty, and don’t mind the others we weren’t expecting any guests today so it’s a little surprising for them to see you walking around, especially the way you’re dressed.”
“Okay.”
She stopped in front of a door and pushed it open. “Here we are.” It was a rather grand looking bathroom but that wasn’t surprising based on what she’s seen so far. Dusty turned on the water and began filling the tub. “Now then let’s get you out of those rags.” Twilight undressed herself and Dusty stared for a moment when she saw Twilight’s flank to which she took notice. “My apologies I didn’t mean to stare it’s just I’ve never seen a grown pony without…”
“A cutie mark,” she said sounding a little down.
“Sorry forget I said anything.” She adjusted the water’s temperature and it finished filling. “Alright, hop in.” Twilight climbed in and submerged herself in the hot water which felt like heaven. “Do you require any further assistance?”
“No I can bath myself.”
She nodded and gathered up what Twilight was wearing. “I’m guessing you will be spending the night so I’ll go and start preparing a guest room for you. I’ll be back shortly.” Dusty left but not before leaving out shampoo and soap for her to use. Twilight began washing herself enjoying her first real bath. The only time she could wash if you can call it that was when it rained. When she finished she relaxed in the water and Dusty came back not long after carrying a towel and a brush. “All done?”
“Yeah.” Twilight got out of the tub and was given the towel. Once she was done drying herself off Dusty told her sit and started brushing her messy mane and tail. “I can do that myself.”
“Oh no I insist.”
“So how long have you worked here?”
“A couple years now. I worked at some other manors before and this is the best I’ve been to so far. Fancypants is a delight and so thoughtful. He’s a bit of a gem among the other elite and nobles that make up Canterlot’s upper class. How did you meet him by the way? I’m guessing you lived an impoverished life.”
“Yeah I was living on the streets and then this stallion approached me wanting some…sexual favors. I said no but he then tried to force himself on me.”
Dusty paused for a moment. “Oh my, that’s terrible! He didn’t do it did he?”
“No, before it went any further Fancypants was passing by in his coach and saw it. He got him off me and they fled. We talked a little and he invited me here.”
“That sounds like Fancypants alright, he’s noble like that and isn’t shy about extending a helping hoof.”
Once they were done the two headed back down and entered the dining room where Fancypants was waiting. “Ah there you are. My dear you look so much better now that you’re all cleaned up, have a seat.”
The dining room was more of a dining hall with a long table that looked like it could seat a couple dozen ponies. He sat at the tables end spot and she took the seat closes to it. “Sir I took the liberty of preparing a guest room for her.”
“Excellent, you’re dismissed for now.” Dusty look her leave and he rang a bell letting the servants know to bring out the food. “I wasn’t sure what your usual diet was like so I told the chefs not to give you anything rich.” Trays were placed in front of each of them and Twilight’s meal consisted of a salad and daffodil sandwich. To most it wouldn’t look like much but to her it was a feast compared to the scraps she usually eats and what little she could afford from the bits she gets. Fancypants had soup and salad. She proceeded to dig in. Her table manners were atrocious but he expected as much. “So how is it?”
Twilight swallowed. “Delicious.”
“Good to hear. After I’ll show you around a little and then we can both turn in for the night.” When they finished their meals Fancypants gave a quick tour. Some of the highlights were a hall for parties and a courtyard for outdoor festivities. Afterwards he showed Twilight to her room. “Here we are. I’ll see you at breakfast, pleasant dreams.”
Twilight went in and the room was nicely furnished with its own bathroom that had a walk in shower. She went over to the bed and hopped on. With the fluffy pillow, soft mattress, and high thread count sheets she had never felt so comfy. She thought this must be what a pegasus feels like on a cloud. She pulled the sheets over her and started to drift off. If this is a dream I never want to wake up.
Twilight’s eyes slowly started to open as she woke from the sound of somepony knocking on her door. “May I come in?”
Twilight sat up and swung her hind legs over the side of the bed. She stretched after just having the best night’s sleep of her life and heard some pops. “You may.”
The door opened and Dusty walked in. “Well somepony looks well rested. Breakfast will be ready soon so head on down to the dining room. You remember how to get there right?”
“For the most part. I think I’ll be fine.”
“Well if you get turned around just ask one of the staff for directions.”
Dusty started making the bed as Twilight left. It took a little longer than it should have but she managed to find her way to the dining room. She entered and saw Fancypants sitting at the same spot as before and she took hers. “Good morning Twilight, you’re looking more vibrant today. I take it you slept well.”
“I’ve never slept that good in my life. I love having a bed.”
He gave a soft chuckle. “It’s amazing how things most ponies take for granted like a bed to sleep in can be the greatest thing ever to one who’s never know it. Most ponies like to forget that there are those less fortunate that don’t have what they consider essential to live. It’s a shame really.”
Fancypants rang his bell and breakfast was brought out. They were each given a plate of hay eggs, hay bacon, and toast along with a glass of OJ. Again Twilight thoroughly enjoyed her meal. After they finished a servant went up to Fancypants. “Sir a guest has arrived.”
“Good. Twilight come with me.” They got up and he led her to the front door were a unicorn mare in a white lab coat with a bag was waiting. “Doctor so good of you to come on such short notice. Now Twilight I doubt you’ve ever had any kind of checkup or physical so I sent for a physician to give you a quick examination. Take her back to your room and I shall meet up with you shortly.”
Fancypants started walking away. “Hello Twilight, my name is Vaccine. Please, lead the way.”
Twilight and Vaccine made it back to her room, closed the door, and the doctor got to work. Fancypants arrived a short time later and waited outside until they were finished. Finally the doctor come out and shut the door behind her. Twilight heard them start talking and curiosity got the best of her. She went by the door to eavesdrop. “So how is she?”
“Aside from some malnourishment she’s seems perfectly healthy. Just make sure she eats well for the next couple of weeks and she’ll be fine, but nothing too rich at first. You’ll have to bring her down to the hospital for some blood work and a booster shot just to be safe but it’s nothing urgent.”
“Were your colleagues able to find out anything?”
“We ran her name and were able to find a record of her birth certificate. She turned twenty last May on the eleventh.”
“Any family?”
“Her parents are declared dead and we couldn’t find any living relatives.”
“Well thank you for what you could find you’ve been most helpful. Just send me the bill when you can, good day.” Twilight found herself deep in thought and didn’t notice the door open at first. “Oh, how much of that did you hear?”
“Uhh all of it.”
“Well it was nothing that needed to be kept secret, but try not to make a habit out of eavesdropping. You may end up hearing something you’ll wish you hadn’t.”
“Sorry. So my birthday is May eleventh and I’m twenty?”
“Yes it would appear so. Come with me I want to show you something I think you’ll like.” He led her through his home until they came upon a door and he opened it. “This is my study.” It was a long room with a window on the far wall and bookshelves that took up the entire left and right wall, and there was also a desk. “So what do you think?”
Twilight was awestruck by the sight. “It’s beautiful.”
She went over and started perusing the selections. “Tell me do have any interest in furthering your education beyond what you already know?”
“Yes, that would be wonderful,” she said enthusiastically.
“Then I’ll have to enquire about getting some private instructors to teach you.” Twilight looked giddy and let out a squeal, then she paused and her mood took a downswing. “Something the matter?”
“I guess I’m just confused. Letting me spent the night was one thing but why are you doing all this?”
“Because if I can help put you in a better place so you don’t have to go back to begging on the streets then I’m happy to do so.”
Twilight smiled and went over to hug him. “Thank you so much,” she said getting teary eyed.
He hugged her back. “You’re quite welcome.”
“How can I ever repay you?”
“My dear you don’t owe me a thing, it’s my pleaser.” They pulled apart after a few seconds and Fancypants took out a handkerchief. “Here, dry your eyes.” Twilight took it and did so. “Feel free to look over my collection and you can come back here to read anytime you wish. Now I have some other matters that require my attention but I’ll have somepony come by to check on you every so often and inform you when dinner is prepared.”
He left and after looking over the shelves she finally settled on one to start reading. Never in Twilight’s life did she think she would get an opportunity like this. Oh Celestia if this is still a dream please let me sleep a little longer.
A few days passed by and winter had set in with the first snowfall. Fancypants lined up a few instructors to teach Twilight different topics such as math, history, magic, and so forth. She was given a preliminary test to determine her knowledge base before starting in order to formulate a lesson plan for her. Today’s lesson was math. Fancypants was in his office when Silver Platter walked in.
“Silver, what can I do for you?”
“Sir how much longer will Twilight be staying here?”
“It’s uncertain at the moment. Besides I’m rather enjoying her company. She’s a breath of fresh air compared to all those stuffy ponies I normally socialize with. Why do you ask?”
“Well it’s just…you do recall what’s coming up in about a month’s time right?”
“What are…oh my, how could I have forgotten.”
“Will she be attending?”
“It would rude not to include her. Come with me.” The pair went up to the study where Twilight’s lessons took place and waited outside not wanting to interrupt. The earth pony stallion instructor exited when the lesson was complete for the day. “So how is she performing?”
“Despite not having any kind of formal education she’s quite bright and is eager to learn. I wish I had more students like her. Now if you’ll excuse me I must be on my way, good day.”
They went inside where Twilight was still sitting at the room’s desk looking over today’s lesson. “Twilight we need to speak.”
She looked up and at them. “About what?”
“You see in about a month I will be hosting a social gathering that will have many of Canterlot’s most prestigious ponies attending. You know dinner, dancing, and conversation. And I would like it if you would attend as well.”
“Sure, that sounds fun.”
“Then we’ll have to teach you the ins and outs of high society. You see the ponies that attend these types of soirees can be…well they can get…”
“They can get pretty anal about proper etiquette and procedure.”
“A little crude but an accurate statement none the less.”
“Okay, how hard can it be.”
“Silver send for a seamstress, we’ll need to get her measurements right away.”
“Measurements?”
“Well you’ll have to wear proper attire so I’ll have a dress made up for you. We’ll begin teaching you tomorrow.”
Chapter 3 - Higher Learning
Twilight sat at the dining table staring at the layout in front of her. “Umm why do I need multiples of the same utensils?”
Fancypants sat at the table as well with the same layout. “I’ve asked myself that question many times as well. It’s just how things are done. These types of customs have been round for forever. Now look at the placements. From left to right you have your dinner fork, salad fork, knife, teaspoon, and soup spoon. Above your plate you have your cake fork and dessert spoon, and to the left of that is your bread plate and butter knife.”
“Okay.” She looked over the placements to recall which was which.
Silver whispered into his ear. “Sir are you sure she’ll be ready in time?”
Fancypants whispered back. “Oh calm yourself we still have plenty of time. Besides I rather like the idea of being able to introduce a debutante.”
“I don’t suppose you could push the date back any?”
“No unfortunately. These types of events require months of advance notice and to simply cancel so close to the date without a good reason reflects badly on the host.”
“Okay. So why are there two glasses?”
“One is for white wine and the other for red.”
“Am I old enough to drink?”
“Of course, the legal age is eighteen. We’ll give some samples to taste so you’ll know what you want ahead of time. Now then this is important, once you use a utensil never place it back on the table only your plate. As for your napkin you’ll want to drape it on your lap, never tuck it in, and only dap your mouth with it. Also if you need to excuse yourself for a moment lay your napkin on your seat until you return.” Twilight leaned on the table holding her head trying to process all this. “No elbows on the table.”
Twilight quickly removed them, and then a servant entered. “Sir Miss Rarity has arrived.”
“Ah perfect. Twilight we’ll comeback to this another time and go over some of the more finer details. Now come along.” They made their way towards the front door where a mare was waiting and Fancypants went up to her. “Rarity! How’s the best seamstress in Canterlot doing?”
“Busy like always.”
“Well thank you so much for coming on such short notice.”
“Oh please darling it was no trouble at all. Now then is she the one in need of my work?”
“Ah yes, this is Twilight. I do hope you come up with something smashing for our deb here.”
“Deb?” said Twilight.
“It’s short for debutante which is when a young mare like yourself makes their first debut at a high society get together. Now said get together is in a month, think you can have it ready by then?”
“Please for you I’ll have it done in half that.”
“You’re the best Rarity.”
“Oh tell me something I don’t know.” They both shared a laugh. “Well let’s get started.” She opened her bag and pulled out a quill, pad of paper, and measuring tape. After a minute or two she had all the measurements written down. “Twilight if you don’t mind I’d like a word with Fancypants in private.”
“Sure, that’s fine.”
“Twilight why don’t you go back to your room and unwind for a bit and I’ll meet up with you later.”
Twilight left soon after and Rarity went up to him. “I didn’t want to say anything in front of her but how can somepony her age still not have a mark?”
“It’s a bit of a story that can wait for the moment.”
“Very well, I’ll head back to the boutique and start on this right away.”
The next day they moved on to dance practice in the hall. “Today you’ll be learning the Waltz. It’s been around for centuries and still dominates the dance floor. It’s simple, elegant, and fluid. Dusty, care to help me demonstrate?”
“Of course.”
The two got into position. “Make sure to pay close attention to our movements. Silver start the music.” He wound up the phonograph and placed the needle on the record. They began the dance. “Now it is crucial to stay in sync with your partner, but the best thing about the Waltz is its simplicity. It’s a two three-count step so the best way to keep pace is to count to yourself. One, two, three. One, two, three. Alright let’s have you try now.”
Twilight went over and they assumed the starting position. He nodded at Silver to start the music and they began. Okay, one, two, three. One, two, three.
“There you go. You’re getting the hang of it already.” The thing about the Waltz is it keeps the dancers in such a close proximity. Twilight kept finding herself gazing into his eyes. “Excellent Twilight, you’re doing very well for your first time.”
Twilight couldn’t help but smile and blush a little, then there was a knock at the double doors. They stopped and one of the servants poked his head in. “Sir I’m sorry to interrupt but a royal messenger has arrived asking for you.”
“Really now! I’ll be right there. I hopefully shouldn’t be too long so take a break until I come back.” Fancypants made it to the front door and saw the messenger waiting. “Greetings, how can I help you?”
“There’s been a change in Princess Celestia’s schedule and she will be able to attend your party for at least part of the evening. She hopes her RSVP hasn’t come too late.”
“Nonsense her highness is always welcome in my home and I’d be happy to have her.”
“You have the princess’s gratitude, farewell.”
After the messenger left Fancypants returned to the hall. “Exciting news, it turns out the princess will be attending after all.”
Twilight was shocked. “P-Princess Celestia, here, me, meet!”
“Calm yourself Twilight.”
“But what if I say or do the wrong thing? What if I end up making a fool out of myself? No, no, no.”
She was starting to panic and pace around. He went over and placed a hoof on her shoulder to get her attention. “Twilight breathe, it will be fine. We still have plenty of time to get you ready.”
Twilight took some deep breaths. “Okay.”
“Alright let’s take it from the top.”
After two weeks of being shown the ropes Twilight was starting to get the hang of things. Rarity had returned with her dress and they went to Twilight’s room to do a fitting. The dress had varying shades of blue and just the right amount of frills. “Well everything seems to fit just the way it should.”
“Beautiful work my dear. Your talent is only matched by your looks.”
She giggled. “Oh darling must you always be so charming.”
“It’s a curse I’m afraid. Come with me to my office and I’ll write you a check. Dusty help Twilight out of her dress while I’m gone.”
They left and Dusty started undoing the laces. “You know it’s probably not my place to say but I think Fancypant really likes you.”
“Really?”
“Oh yes I’ve never seen him enjoy spending so much time with another pony, and I think you like him too.”
She blushed. “Oh, well I-”
She giggled. “It’s alright you don’t have to say anything. Many mares have shown interest in him over the years but as far as I know he’s never truly returned it.”
“You really think I have a chance?”
“Like I said it’s not my place to say but you won’t know for sure until you try.”
After preparing for the last month in addition to her regular academics the day of the party finally arrived. Twilight was a nervous wreck pacing around her room trying to calm herself. It’ll be okay. You have nothing to worry about, nothing at all.
A knock snapped her out of her thoughts. “May I come in?”
“Yes.”
The door opened and Dusty walked in. “Well it’s time to start getting you ready for the evening. You nervous?”
“Nervous, why should I be nervous? I’m just going to be in a room full of upper class ponies that may nitpick over every detail and then Princess Celestia will be here and…”
Twilight started to feel sick and ran into the bathroom while Dusty was left in the other room to hear her puke, cringing a little. “Goodness. BE SURE TO SHOWER BEFORE YOU COME OUT.”
After she finished and showered Twilight was feeling much better. Dusty helped her into her dress and styled her mane a little. Then she brought out a makeup kit. “Umm how much of that are you going to put on?”
“Oh don’t worry I’ve seen some mares go overboard with makeup trying to look good. But a little rouge and mascara never hurt. Now hold still.” A few minutes later and they were done. “There we go, and with a few minutes to spare. Let’s head down, I’m sure Fancypants will have some last minute words of advice for you.”
They made it down the stairs where Fancypants was waiting and Twilight went up to him. “My dear you look stunning.” She blushed a little. “How do you feel?”
“Nervous.”
“Well don’t be, you’ll do fine. Now it’s almost six and the guests will be arriving soon. If you forget something or are unsure of what to do look at me or the others around you for hints. Also when dinner starts the host which is me is the first to enter and sit. Then the most senior or prestigious member of the guest list which will be the princess picks their seat which is usually the one closest to the host. Then the others may enter and pick theirs. I suggest getting the one next closest to me opposite the princess if you can. But don’t run, a brisk trot will be fine.”
Twilight took a deep breath. “Alright.”
“Just try and stay close to me for most of the night and everything will be fine.” The clock finally struck six and minutes later guests started to arrive. Fancypants was there waiting to greet them as they came in with Twilight close by. “Jet Set, Upper Crust, so good to see you again.”
“It’s good to see you as well Fancypants. Thank you for having us,” said Jet Set.
“We’ve heard rumors about you hosting some mystery mare. Is this her?”
“Yes this is Twilight.”
“Hello, nice to meet you,” said Twilight.
“So Fancypants what’s her story?” said Jet Set.
“Oh no need to bore up with the details at the moment. Besides other guests are arriving that need my attention.”
“Very well.” The pair walked away after that.
Guests continued to arrive and then Princess Celestia’s pegasus drawn chariot landed and she made her way inside. She went up to Fancypants and he offered up his hoof, she took it and he kissed the top of hers. “Princess it’s always a pleasure to have you grace my home.”
“And thank you for having me. Unfortunately I can only say for dinner.”
“It’s quite alright your highness. I know you can have a lot going on.”
“Now who is this?”
“Ah yes, this is Twilight. She’s the debutante of the evening.”
“A pleasure to meet you Twilight.”
“Hi, I-I mean hello, princess I, umm, sorry,” she said looking nervous.
Celestia giggled. “It’s quite alright. I get this reaction a lot when meeting new ponies. Perhaps we’ll talk later.”
The princess walked away and Twilight took some deep breaths after having her first encounter with royalty. After everypony arrived Fancypants announced dinner would be served and they all made their way to the dining room. Fancypants of course was the first to enter and sit followed by Princess Celestia, then the others were allowed to pick. Twilight was lucky enough to get the other seat closest to Fancypants opposite the princess. Tonight’s dinner consisted of a three course meal and there was a couple ponies playing stringed instruments for ambiance. Once everypony was seated the appetizers were served. The guests then began conversing amongst themselves. Twilight wasn’t sure if she should say anything or what to even say so she focused on her food. After the main course was served Princess Celestia and Fancypants were engaged in conversation on the topic of foreign relations.
“As I understand it talks with the griffins are dragging out longer than they should.”
“You heard right. They are being unreasonable about the terms of the new trade agreement we’re negotiating. They feel their goods are of a higher quality and want higher tariffs as a result.”
“Please I’ve bought some of their wares. It seemed rather shoddy to me.”
Princess Celestia then turned her attention to Twilight for a moment. “So Twilight where are you from?”
She perked up. “Oh, umm Canterlot.”
“She’s my guest princess.”
“I see, and what of her family?”
“Oh no need to bore you with such trivial details at the moment, another time perhaps.”
“Very well, another time then.”
After dessert was severed and dinner ended the others continued to converse letting their food digest. Finally it was time to get up from the table and the princess said her farewell as she had to leave. The party moved to the hall where a band with a conductor was ready to play. “Care to dance Twilight?”
“Sure.”
Twilight and Fancypants along with others took to the dance floor and the band started playing. Twilight found the Waltz enjoyable but whether it was due to the dance or her partner she wasn’t sure. The non-dancers lined the edge of the room. After dancing for a bit the two took a break and Twilight excused herself to make a quick trip to the bathroom. As she returned the door to the hall was slightly open and before she was about to go in she hear three ponies on the other side talking about her.
“So do you know anything about this mare Fancypants is hosting?” said a mare.
“I did a little digging and apparently she was living on the streets before he took her in. Also it appears she doesn’t even have her cutie mark yet,” said stallion one.
“Good heavens, why is Fancypants wasting his time with some street urchin blank flank like her?” said the mare.
“She’s probably just some gold digging harlot that caught his eye and was gussied up,” said stallion two.
“I wouldn’t doubt it. I’m sure a pony of her background has had to turn a few tricks to get by,” said stallion one.
The three shared a laugh and Twilight started to cry then ran back the way she came. A little while later Fancypants was beginning to wonder where Twilight had gone. “Silver you haven’t seen Twilight lately have you?”
“Can’t say I have. She probably just stepped out for some air or something.”
“Well I’m going to go have a look around.” After a few minutes of looking he decided to check her room and saw the door partly open. He poked his head in and saw her laying on the bed crying into her pillow. “Twilight, are you alright?” She looked up at him but didn’t say anything and he went in taking a seat on the edge of the bed. He padded the spot next to him and she moved to sit by him. He gave her a handkerchief and put his foreleg around her. She wiped her eyes and leaned into him. “Now what has you so upset?”
“I-I overheard some ponies talking about me. They called a street urchin blank flank and a gold digging harlot.”
“Who said that?”
“I don’t know, I didn’t see them.”
He held her close. “There, there now. Word about where you’re from was bound to get out and have false assumptions made about it. But who cares what they think. Ponies like that think anypony that doesn’t meet their standards are beneath them. Although the worst you’ll have to deal with out of them is Prince Blueblood. He’s the strongest purist out of them and won’t give a commoner so much as the time of day.” She started to calm down and relax. “Feeling any better?”
“Yeah.”
“Good. Overall I would say you did very well this evening and I’m proud of you.”
She smiled and lifted her head to look up at. She gazed into his blue eyes and on a whim kissed him. He was a little caught off guard at first but melted into it. She pulled back and looked away blushing profusely. “I-I’m sorry, I don’t know-”
“Shh it’s okay Twilight, no need to apologize. I rather liked it.” This time he was the one with a little blush and smiled.
“Really?”
“Really. Tell you what why don’t I go back down and see if I can’t try to hasten the others departure and comeback after.”
“Okay.”
He got up to leave. “Should I send Dusty up to keep you company and help you out of your dress?”
“No I can manage.”
“Alright then.” A while had passed and Twilight had put away her dress and washed her face. Then Fancypants finally returned. “How are you feeling?”
“Much better.”
“Good.” He went over and took a seat next to her on the bed. “Aside from that last bit did you enjoy the evening?”
“It was fun, especially the dancing.” She paused for a moment looking nervous. “Fancypants do…do you like me in more than just a friendly way?”
“My dear you’re a beautiful young mare that’s bright and has a personality that any stallion would want to be with, myself included.” He leaned over and kissed her on the cheek. “Does that answer your question?”
“Yeah. Could you stay the night?”
“Alright.” He got up and undressed himself while she laid down on the right side of the bed. He took the left and pulled the covers over them. Twilight got on her side and scooched back until she was up against him. Fancypants took the hint and rolled onto his side holding her in a spooning position then kissed her on the neck. “Goodnight Twilight.”
She smiled. “Goodnight.”
