Chapter one - The Last Straw Is Drawn
It’s been awhile since Luna had come back to Equus and with the help of Twilight Sparkle and her friends they had vanished Nightmare Moon, She had friends now with the six courageous ponies and as well as the other subjects of PonyVille because of Twilights Sparkles encouragement. Yet. There was one thing that the dark blue mare didn’t seem quite right.Her sister Celestia: The thought of the rainbow maned, white coat mare caused Luna to narrow her eyebrows with frustration rather than the hatred she felt towards her long ago.
They still had their up and downs when she came back to live in Canterlot, Celestia had seemed to try to make amends from how she started to then avoid her completely in the past. That mare was now trying to use everything at her disposal to make Luna happy, acting like she never avoided Luna in the first place....
It had frustrated the dark blue alicorn to no end to the point after her nightly duties one morning she had actually ate a banana peel in front of Twilight Sparkles pupil Starlight Glimmer, of course Luna was in a extremely bad mood because even though ponies had begun to appreciate her nights. The thought of Celestia’s treatment, the loneliness that the night princess had to endure and Celestia acted like she had done nothing wrong. It infuriated Luna; However It had turned out well in the end perhaps, making her come closer to her sister by Starlights advise to talk to one another, but even though Luna had tried to do this with Celestia for many seasons, even just before the friendship festival when Tempest- That was what the black and red unicorn called herself had invaded Equestria in the name of the storm king.
Again friendship conquered all and Tempest became friends with the mane six, but even then when Luna asked Celestia to dance with her at the party. Celestia excused herself as other ponies tried to get her attention even as teenage mare Celestia had time to dance with her. She went to the lengths of canceling all her meetings to teach Luna how to dance.
The night of the Friendship Celebration had only just ended an hour ago, most ponies would’ve felt good, stuffed, tired or all three after the night they had however; Luna was not like most ponies she was walking with a stride and an unreadable expression that meant something or somepony had annoyed her and that somepony was… Celestia, her sister who didn’t come back to spend time with her like she stated she would and Luna could remember it very clearly as her current desired destination that was her sister's study.

Music of Ms Songbird was blasting away, Luna along with her sister had thanked the mane six and had pardoned Tempest and her followers but they were to be watched at all times. Tempest and her little Grubber friend were assigned to the mane six to learn how be good friends. When everything has fine that evening. Luna thought it was time to ask her sister to dance with her, or rather ask her to teach her how to dance in the modern time since she had been gone for a thousand years. When she approached Celestia she was embracing the Queen of the hippogriffs that was part pony, part griffon and they somehow managed to get a pearl that could give them the ability to live underwater.
Luna recalled the story that Celestia had told her upon her return, how one of her many adopted children had fallen in love with a griffin, though the rest of the story to her wasn’t on her mind right at that moment. Her thoughts were on her sister- the want for her to have Celestia in her hooves, to teach her how to dance present music after being gone for so long… to feel Celestia’s warmth…
Luna had halted at that moment as she felt something warm in her chest. She took a step-back as she realised what was surfacing again. The feelings that the nightmare had tormented her with, telling her that Celestia would be disgusted with her if she knew her feelings, back when they were teenagers. Luna realised she had been rubbing on Celestia, wanting to get closer but after a while the elder Alicorn started to avoid her, start to go into her study and the library more often to the point she didn’t come to watch the moon raise with her…
Luna’s ears went back as she remembered how she stormed to her sisters chamber and demanded an answer, causing Celestia to shout out in the royal voice for her to leave, even though it was said in the scrolls at the time it was a traditional way to speak to their subjects. Although; Celestia never used it unless she was angry or the court didn’t listen to her and bickered amongst themselves, yet not once had Celestia used it upon her until that one time, shocking her, the castle and most likely all of Equus. It had caught the attention of Starswirl the bearded who convinced her it was simply because she had very important documents to fill out.
At first Luna believed it but even when Celestia tried to be there for her, every time they would get close the elder sister would eventually become distant again then completely after day court one morning… Luna was just going to bed until she heard Celestia’s booming Canterlot voice telling the court ‘Love was love’ and every pony should be allowed to be in love with any pony they wished, though there were arguments to which Luna could no longer hear because the elder mare had put up a sound barrier up so no one could hear on the outside..
When Celestia came out of the court room and saw the dark blue Alicorn. She gently smiled to her and stating good morning to her, before walking away to her study telling Luna she won’t be coming to breakfast that morning, leaving a confused and concerned Luna. Who eventually just went to eat and went to bed… Celestia had avoided her like the plague after that meeting, and Luna could only wonder and keep wondering because she knew she would never get the answer, eventually that wonder and concern turned into hatred and jealousy for Celestia was loved by all and she was not because everyone was asleep during her night’s even the one she wanted to impress the most who was her sister.
At first it was her loneliness that attracted the nightmare to her, at the time Luna thought it was friend that came from her depths of her dreams, her loneliness to keep her company, she didn’t realise it that wasn’t the case until it was too late her hatred had gotten stronger due to the nightmares influence, her once pleasant dreams become nightmares to feed the fend, soon when Celestia stopped showing up on her birthday, only leaving a present at her bedroom door and the gifts of their people and stopped showing up at meal times. Luna couldn’t take it anymore she had burst into tears in her room, crying like she was being tortured, until her sister came in and tried to make amends.
At that time, it only angered her more and Luna sent her away. Luna could still hear the voices of the nightmare of the past convincing her that it would take her pain all away. “My poor dearest Luna, you see that your sister doesn’t care about you like I do, I told you that she might know about your feelings for her and cast you away if you got close to her dear…I can take all the pain away you know?, I make sure they all know your power, your right to be loved by all just like your sister, come under my wing and I shall do the rest.” That was what it said, convincing her to betray Celestia, make Equss hers, to make somepony to love her and her nights.
They had fought and Celestia was forced to send her to the moon with the elements changing her once bubblegum pink her to a rainbow of colour. When Luna was placed on the moon… The nightmare had left her also, due to the power of the elements it had weakened it, causing it to give Luna her sanity back causing her to realise that she had hurt her subjects, she had hurt Celestia, She had been lied to by the shadow figure that she thought was her friend and she realised that the shadow was not her friend but in fact a nightmare that once lived in tartarus that fed of the fruits of her nightmares, her jealousy and hatred. For a thousand years, she first hated Celestia, then eventually it turned into guilt and self-blame, wishing she could be with her sister once more.
Until that day when the nightmare took over again and that was when Twilight and her friends saved her from its clutches and sealed the nightmare in her dreams because her guilt and self-blame wouldn’t let it leave her. Even though the memories caused Luna to take a step back she steadied herself once more and took in a deep breath in through her snout and out through her muzzle in order to get control of herself. As she stood before the Hippogriff Queen Novo and her sister as the Hippogriff started to leave in the opposite direction of her- to whom she could see was the Hippogriff Princess.
Even though Luna knew it was quite rude of her to wish that Queen Novo left Celestia’s side a little sooner… She did wish to have at least one dance with her sister before anyone else swept the sun princess away from her. “Is something the matter Luna?”
A wave of surprise and embarrassment went through Luna as she blinked at the voice of her sister causing her to stop her starring as Queen Novo was out of sight into the crowd of ponies and to the mare that she came over to in the first place to talk to. “Hm? Oh no sister. We- I wished to talk to you…” Luna stated quickly that there was nothing wrong before her voice got smaller, she knew what she wanted to say or rather ask of her sister, but the fear of rejection and the fact that she was heating up in her cheeks.
That she mentally thanked her father for the dark blue fur from his genes, without it she would be red as some of of the stage lights and she only felt herself get even hotter from embarrassment as she got tongue tied, causing Celestia tilted her head to the side in curiousness and confusion.
Luna couldn’t look at Celestia in the eye because whenever she tried to she felt her face get even hotter, so she turned her eyes to the side and had subconsciously lowered her head slightly, covering her eyes with her mane. “We...I..Wish to...To be taught how to..Dance modernly with you?” Luna asked nervously causing her to feel the adrenaline from her nervousness sweat through her fur and cause her to feel like she was going to shake but she kept under control However; she did not dare to look up because she would see the over concerned expression of her sister…
It took a moment as if Celestia was taking in what she said, or rather she maybe didn’t hear her amongst the noise of the music, yet Luna voice’s had a little bit of her Royal voice in it, causing her to be heard even amongst the noise of the music., so she guessed that her sister was just taking in what she had just asked of her, but then.
“Good evening Princesses, Princess Celestia I have the documents you required of the damage that Tempest and her army have caused that the staff wasn’t in range to fix, also some of the civilians from the outlands are… demanding.. Well Tempests blood or money to compensate for the damage caused to their stalls. They’re at the gates right now. I don’t know how long the guards will be able to handle them off.”
Luna had immediately put up her head once interrupting pony spoke to Celestia, mostly out of to regain some composure around the citizen who caused the elder Alicorn to become more concerned about the citizens of the Outlands than about Luna’s request as she spoke to the cream coloured pony.
“I see… Thank you for informing me Mister Cogs, I see to the citizens of the Outlands immediately, please take the documents to my study and enjoy the rest of the evening.”Celestia said as she gave her informal nod of gratitude, before the cog cutie mark baring stallion nodded in kind before trotting off to Celestia’s study.
The whole situation caused Luna to curve her lips and turn away with a soft gentle sigh of disappointment, which Celestia seem to catch or she seemed to remember why Luna was there.
“Oh I’m terribly sorry Luna. We will be in each other's company once I have greeted our new guests at our gates. Maybe Pinkie-Pie can show you how to modernly dance?. For I unfortunately and embarrassingly have not danced for many years.”
As Celestia spoke she lowered her head slightly towards at Luna in apology before lifting her head back up and walked towards the doors as well turning her head towards Luna as not to be rude to her sister once she was done talking the rainbow maned mare went silent before she turned her head towards the doors that lead outside the front of the castle and continued her walking, causing the dark blue mare to step forward and almost reach a hoof out to Celestia.
“but..I wish to dance with you sister..”
It was but a murmur from Luna’s lips and the sound of the music had covered it whole, knowing it was fruitless Luna had put her hoof down and lowered her head for a moment until a sound of a cannon being shot in her direction and confetti was sprinkled on her.
“Hey there Princess Luna, what's the glum face?, is it because we ran out of cake-”
Luna knew that voice it was the voice of Ponyville's famous party mare and element of laughter- Pinkie-Pie. Luna straightened herself up and felt herself get a little better as the Pink mare gasped
“We have run out cake!, no wonder you’re glum Princess Luna. Not to worry I Pinkie-Pie will bake the cake in a hurry, if you don’t mind us using the kitchen and you come and make it with me! ”
Pinkie-pie was from sad for Luna, then after than the moon princess could blink she went back to bouncing on her tail, then her hooves. If Luna didn’t know the pink mare by now, she would have thought the young mare was hyper on sugar doses but in reality she was just a very hyper pony in personality and was quite forward even to royalty, yet it only seemed to make Luna seem to not to able to composure herself and let herself give of a smile and light snort because even though Pinkie-Pie was straight-forward that even the bravest would dare not to be towards Celestia let alone the princess of the night- The pink mare was a delight to be around with when somepony needed cheering up and that's what she needed that moment.
That evening Luna and Pinkie-pie made cakes, Luna being the ‘fun’ pony out of the two sisters she had allowed baking to turn out a quite a mess in the royal kitchen, to the kitchen staff dismay and her sister would surely be informed about it, but at that time Luna couldn’t have cared less, she had a wonderful evening, yet as soon as the evening came to an end. Luna felt the emptiness in her being once more and the feeling of frustration as she sat on her throne waiting...
Celestia had lied to her, she must have been done with those documents hours ago, because she saw the civilians of the Outlands dancing and enjoying the party as all the other creatures of equus even Discord came back from wherever he went of to on his vacation and enjoyed the party with Fluttershy whom he hugged in glee the moment he was back.
After Luna had announced the night over, once ponies had started to leave, starting with mares and stallions that had their fillies and colts with them, she bid everyone good night, but not before offering rooms for the night, after the evening when she was left alone on her throne, even Twilight and her friends had gone to bed. Luna felt her eye twitch with annoyance because not even the sounds of night animals were her company because they had come to their own little party in the gardens of the day animals. Her only company was the clocks in the distance, ticking every second she waited for her sister to come back. Another hour had past- Celestia had not come back- Another twitch and another second ticked off the clock in the distance.
Then something snapped in Luna but she calmly got of her throne and the room was filled with her slow walking hooves, even though Luna seemed calm.. She was glaring in the abyss of the darkened room only her starry night sky mane and tail shown her way because she did not see the need to use her magic to put on the light and she thought to herself.
“‘This is the last straw dear sister, you will give me the answers I have sought for longer than a thousand years tonight!’”
