This story is loosely based on the Equestria Girls Movies and. It will be told from Sunset Shimmer’s POV.

Chapter 1

Pain. That is what she felt when she placed the crown on her head. It felt like acid burning through her skin. Sunset remembered trying to remove the crown again but her arms didn’t work. She wasn’t in control of her body anymore. She watched through red tainted eyes as Twilight Sparkle was protected by her friends, a slight relief she never wanted to kill anyone.

The Element of Magic, I can will it!” Sunset thought and with all the force she could muster she directed the magic in the crown to Twilight. “If I die today, at least I die fighting this demon I became.

The magic jumped from Twilight to her friends and soon a rainbow shot into the sky and came crashing down on her. She welcomed the pain, what she didn’t expect was to open her eyes again.

“You will never rule in Equestria. Any power you had in this world is gone.” Sunset didn’t hear what Twilight said next. She was just relieved that she was still alive, and even though the cuts in her back caused her pain she knew that there was only one thing to say.

“I – I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know there was another way.” Sunset couldn’t recall the next few moments. All she knew was that Twilight Sparkle had spared her life and asked her friends to look after her.

Sunset stumbled her way into the school building where she was escorted to Vice-Principal Luna’s office, where she remained standing close to the wall. In the office she was given a choice. She could remain in school where she would have to help rebuild the front of the school as her detention, or she could go back with Twilight to Equestria.

“I –” Sunset winched at the pain in her back. “I’m not ready to face Princess Celestia in the other world just yet.” Sunset finally managed to say.

“Very well, you will help with the basic clean-up tonight and come Monday –” Luna stopped talking as Sunset suddenly collapsed in place. In a matter of seconds she was at the girl’s side. The last thing Sunset heard before she blacked out was Luna saying: “Stay with me.”

Sunset woke up in a very unfamiliar room. She could vaguely recall glimpses of what happened. They were in the school’s nurse’s office, where they cut her shirt off her body. She was given some pills to drink while sitting in a car. Asked to lie down on the softest bed she ever had. Two voices talking about her, but what they said were unclear.

“You are awake?” That was Luna’s voice. It sounded relieved?

“How long was I out?” Sunset asked noticing her voice was hoarse. Moments later a glass was held against her lips to drink. “Thank you.”

“You were out for almost three days now. Why didn’t you say you were bleeding?” Luna was clearly concerned.

“I’ve been hurting since I transformed into that nightmare. My back still hurt, but I didn’t know it was bleeding.”

“I was afraid that was the case.” Luna rubbed the bridge of her nose. “Celestia and I decided that it was unwise to punish you more then you already were. So as a compromise we have an alternative. Until the stitches on your back are removed, we will escort you to school and back here.” Luna held up her hand. “We are aware that you live on your own currently. I am curious though how do you survive?”

“It is kind of a long story.” Sunset smiled weakly.

“We have nothing but time.”

“Well,” Sunset sighed, “When I first arrived in this world I soon realized that there were similarities between the people here and the ponies back home. The first thing I did was find the library. I intended to skim through the obituaries to find a new name. That was when I found her, this world’s Sunset Shimmer. She and her mother, my mother was listed there, died in a forest fire, a few days before I got here. I found the article and found a way in.”

“I remember the fire. The only body that could be recognized was that of Nurse Lolli Love. My sister and I were volunteers to get it under control.”

“I went there and smeared myself in the soot and ashes and,” Sunset took a deep breath to sooth the memory. “I basically set a controlled fire and walked through the flames to get burns before I went to the hospital. While there I was able to convince my mother’s co-worker, Dr. Horse, that my mom told me to run. He treated my wounds and called my dead-beat dad, well this world’s version of him anyway.” Sunset sighed in defeat. “Flim Skim, my dad, is just as deadbeat as back in Equestria, always running around with his brother on some kind of scheme. Guess I can’t really blame him. I did the same when I got her. At least he sends me money each month to buy food and he pays for the rent and my school fees.” Sunset laughed. “Biggest shocker I got was that apparently I was fourteen when I arrived here. That also got my brain ticking and I figured out that it would take about two and a half seasons before the portal opened again. When I got back to school I noticed the notifications for the dance and got blindsided by the word princess, the rest is history.”

“Do you know where Mr. Skim is now?” Luna asked. Sunset shrugged.

“I only hear from him maybe once a month, I think he’s in Manehattan, trying his hand at buying storage units and selling the contents.”

“Luna, I’m surprised at you.” A voice sounded from just outside the door. “Not even offering our guest something to eat.”

“I was about to, Tia.” Luna rolled her eyes.

“Sunset, would you like a home cooked meal of roast beef and potatoes?” Celestia asked coming into view.

“I don’t actually eat meat, Principal Celestia, but roast potatoes sounds lovely, thank you.” Both women looked at Sunset like she grew a second head. Sunset couldn’t help but chuckle a bit. “Which part has you more stunned, the vegetarian part or my manners?”

“For me it is definitely the manners.” Luna smirked. “Tia was worried what to make for most of the morning. When she decided on roast beef, I told her to wait till you woke up. I always thought that you were a vegetarian.”

“Frankly I am surprised,” Celestia smiled, “Not eating meat doesn’t really go with the image you portrayed.”

“Technically I was raised by the princess since I was about eight. So I do have etiquette, even if I never used it before.” Sunset smiled back challenging. “As for my image, is there a rule that says that a bully can’t be a vegetarian? Is there a slur for that, something like Racist? Or Sexist? Maybe Bully-ist?”

“I should hope not,” Luna could barely contain her laughter.

Luna helped Sunset as they made their way to the dining room. Sunset’s eyes nearly watered along with her mouth. The few times Sunset spend with this world’s Flim Skim he was always flimsy, his idea of Roast Beef and potatoes just had the two ingredients, beef and potatoes. What met Sunset’s eyes and nose was fluffy rice, perfectly steamed green beans and cauliflower with a hollandaise sauce on top of the before mentioned roast beef and potatoes. After saying grace, Celestia turned to Sunset.

“I am curious, how did you know what goes on back in Equestria if you were here all that time?”

“The mirror was located in the Canterlot Thrown room. There were occasions when there were high concentrations of magic in the same room that made the portal semi-translucent on this side. I saw when Princess Luna returned with Princess Celestia.”

“Returned, how?” Luna asked eyeing Celestia wearingly.

“To understand that I would need to start from the beginning.” Sunset said as she swallowed a bite. “Before Equestria was founded, the world was a mess, every few days a new threat would appear and claim dominance until they tired or was overthrown by the next threat.” Sunset smiled, she loved Equestrian history.

“A powerful sorcerer was the first to answer the call of the people. His name was Starswirl the Bearded. Five others joined him to defeat bigger threats, like the sirens of old. Joining him was Mistmane, a once beautiful pony who gave up her outer beauty to help her friend and spend her remaining days spreading beauty throughout the land. In fact Canterlot Castle wouldn’t have existed without her.

“The Earth Pony Healer, Mage Meadowbrook had eight enchanted items and was said to be able to heal better than a unicorn pony could. Rockhoof of the Mighty Helm, the strongest earth pony of his time with his trusty shovel, not only did he save his village from an erupting volcano but defeated the creatures that came with it.

“Flash Magnus was a pegasus pony with very little fear, a bit arrogant after he receive The Netitus, a fireproof shield, but he went on to do great things with it. Somnambula another pegasus was the advisor for Prince Hisan. Amongst her claims to fame is the defeat of the evil Sphinx that held her village in an iron claw.”

“You seem to know the history of Equestria quite well,” Luna gave a teasing smile, “Odd how that doesn’t translate to this world’s history class.” Sunset rubbed the back of her head with a crooked smile.

“Back then I didn’t think I needed it. That was until I was forcedly shown a better way.” Both Celestia and Luna smiled at her and motioned her to continue the story. “Together these ponies formed the Pillars of Equestria. And they disappeared without a trace along with their greatest foe, the Pony of Shadows. After the pillars disappeared chaos incarnated appeared, a draconequus by the name of Discord.

“Discord literally broke the world. Thanks to him Equestria is tidal locked. Starswirl taught two gifted unicorn ponies. These ponies found the Elements of Harmony and were gifted with the strength to wield it, they became the first Alicorns. Alicorns have the strength of earth ponies, the agility and flight of pegasii and the magic of unicorns and combined a magic all their own. In order to combat a literal force of nature they were also granted immortality. They were, well the two of you.

“After their defeat of Discord they were given the power to move the celestial bodies. Princess Celestia, the eldest sister, took the sun upon her shoulders, while Princess Luna, who loved the night, took the moon. Years passed and the sisters ruled in peace, but Princess Luna grew weary since most ponies shunned her beautiful night. She was later consumed by her resentment she was transformed into a wicked mare of darkness. She took on the name Nightmare Moon and refused to lower the moon, she wanted to force ponies to appreciate her beautiful night.

“Princess Celestia was blind for too long and didn’t see her sister’s fall until it was too late. Nightmare Moon struck first. The battle was long and hard. Princess Celestia was on her final leg and Nightmare Moon was gunning for her life. That was when the elements presented themselves to Princess Celestia. Reluctantly she turned the elements against Nightmare moon and they banished her to the moon for a thousand winters.”

“So the Luna of your world was a prisoner isolated on the moon?” Celestia asked cautiously. Sunset could see a pang of guilt in her eyes.

“Not exactly, Nightmare Moon formed part of the moon, her likeness…” Sunset stopped talking and looked at her plate she had absentmindedly made a replica of the moon. “Well like this,” she held up the plate to show the moon. “In order to mellow it all down the elders began to make folk tales. Nightmare Night was soon formed at the end of the Harvest, like Halloween here, and old mare tales told of stories of Nightmare Moon coming down once a year and seeking out fillies that didn’t sacrifice part of their candy to her and gobble them up. I think the candy sacrifice was made up by Princess Celestia so that she could get some candy. It is the worst kept secret in Canterlot Castle that princess Celestia has a sweet tooth.”

“That is so priceless,” Luna barked out a laugh, Celestia was looking to the side guiltily. “Tia told me a similar story, she convinced me since we were kids that I should leave half my candy at the post in our backyard or else the witches will come for me. I stayed up one night, because I wanted to see the witches and lo and behold, they looked just like my sister.” Sunset joined the laughter before she continued her tale.

“When I saw Princesses Luna and Celestia, Twilight and her friends received the highest honor a pony could get. I was also able to see the wedding between Princess Cadence and a white stallion I learned was called Shining Armor. The last big event I was able to see was when Twilight was crowned a princess, I snapped and then the Fall Formal happened.”
