It was a simple night, like any night in Equestria, the moon was full, the stars were alight… and a mint green unicorn was still tripping over her research. “Oh this is hopeless!” Lyra whined, “Maybe Bon-Bon was right… maybe humans are a myth… maybe my work has been all a lie.” she let her own words sink in as her heart grew heavy. But then she heard the telltale sound of a teleport to her front door, hearing no knock the mare carefully opened the door only to come across a basket. And in that basket was a strange biped with no fur or tail, a small reddish, copperish mane atop his head, and round soft hands. She calmly pulled the basket in out of the cold, her stare going a thousand yards… and then she ran up and pushed her marefriend out of bed and shook her awake. “Uuugh… Lyra, now's not the Time.. it's late..” she replied groggily. “But Bon-Bon! Downstairs! There’s a baby! A human baby!” Lyra exclaimed. “Ugh… wait… did you say… a human baby..?” She asked, in Complete disbelief, to which Lyra responded to with a nod you’d expect more from Pinkie Pie from how hyperactive it was. “This… this doesn't sound good, Ly…” Lyra’s marefriend had changed her tone.. to that of concern.. “Huh? But it’s what I’ve been waiting for! Proof! Actual proof of humans! And I get to be his mom!” That very statement made Bon-Bon VERY concerned, and she trotted down the stairs to take a look at the supposed child. Lyra immediately chased after her, determined to see her reaction and make sure Bon-Bon didn’t do anything weird. “Oh, what a relief.. it's just a newborn..” she said to herself, not realizing that Lyra could hear her. “Well duh! Isn’t that what baby means?” Lyra deadpanned. “It could also mean they're just very young, Lyra. Young, and having concerned parents.” Bon-bon countered. “I doubt that, I found him alone in a basket outside our door after hearing teleportation magic.” that last detail made Bon-bon very confused… then she regained her composure. “Are you sure you know enough to be caring for a baby like that, Lyra?” Immediately after raising that question, the baby began to cry, which turned to a shrill wail. {Lyra's POV} I felt sweat forming, losing some confidence. “I’m sure it wouldn’t be as different as caring for a pony, my research does determine that although physically dissimilar, humans and ponies are psychologically and socially similar, though there is something I’m going to have difficulty with.” “Let me guess, feeding her?” Bonnie asked. I shook my head, seeing she doesn’t get the whole picture. “Finding baby formula or using warm cow’s milk in the starting years will be no problem, the trouble is going to be his diet afterwards. Humans are designed to be omnivorous and their skull structure shows they’re a predator species, as their eyes are oriented forward for hunting prey while ponies like us have them more to the side for area awareness. This means it can’t extract nutrients from plants as efficiently as we can, in fact they can’t eat things like grass, flowers or hay. In order to properly balance his diet when he moves to solids we’re going to need protein and starch-rich foods, like beans and potatoes respectively. “We can get potatoes cheap in the market but beans aren’t farmed often as most turn to rock farms, but a human would quickly die if they ate so much as a pebble. Anyway, the point is it’ll be too expensive to buy beans when we’re already going to have to rely on the veggie-only baby food so we don’t poison him with buttercups, so we’re going to rely on a more commonly acquired source of protein… meat.” I concluded, a bit sickly from the thought. “Maybe Fluttershy would be willing to help.. but if humans need such a special diet, I doubt cow's milk or foal formula would work… I know some foals can actually get upset stomach from formula…” I sigh. “Neither of us have been pregnant, and even spells designed to promote lactation are banned because the matrix is so delicate you risk the mare’s teats exploding! I know it’s not a good solution but it’s better than letting him starve, once his teeth come in we can balance it out with solids.” She sighed. “I hope it works out, Lyra..” “Thank you, but right now we need to figure out what’s wrong.” I say, gesturing to the still crying infant before trotting over to see the problem. He cried and reached for me. My heart aching at the gesture, I pick him up and cradle him in my forelegs, and he calmed, then reached up at my muzzle, smiling. “He looks so adorable..” “Guess he just wanted some attention, and I think he’s imprinted on me!” Bonnie shrugged at my deduction. “Hey there little guy, I’m your mommy Lyra, and over there is your mommy Bon-Bon!” “M-mmmm.” the baby tried to say it! Bonnie finally caved into the adorableness and squeed. “So,” I started. “What do we name him?” “Hm… I don't know… I don't know what human names are like..” “Then let’s name him like a pony! It’ll help him fit in… let’s see… how about… Starburst Cog! A sweet name from you, and a metal name from me!” Bonnie giggled, and nodded, and I curled up and nuzzled our new son. “We'd best get to bed, Lyra. We'll have a long day ahead of us tomorrow.” I nod, and carry little Starburst to our bed. “We’ll need to be careful, he doesn’t have his own bed yet.” she nodded “Mhm.” she nuzzled me, then our new son, as we climb into bed and snuggle up to our new baby. And with it, my dreams have been made true, our family is one member stronger, and I get the feeling Bon-Bon will finally start taking me seriously again. That night, I had the weirdest dream…. “Do you wish to be able to better car for your child?” “The only way I could care for a human baby the best I could would be if I was human.” The figure sighed “do you wish to permanently turn human? It doesn't exactly come with benefits.” That got me to think. “Maybe not to you, but to me there are so many things a human, or even human-like form could give me, I’m not the most talented in magic for a unicorn, but I wanted to play string instruments so bad, it became a life’s dream. I practiced my magic to pluck the strings, and it worked, I earned my special talent… but no matter how hard I practice I will never have the same touch as a minotaur bard. And then there’s me as an inventor, a scientist, wanting to learn as much as I can of human physiology, and to make things as advanced as what the inquisitive and calculating humans of their time! But all that requires a delicate touch. And then there’s Bon-Bon, I want to treat her with a nice petting or massage, but hooves are too clumsy for that… I’d need fingers for that… and this last one may seem a bit weird but… as a human I could get past certain social cues, I could finally try meat without being judged for it!” she sighed “I suppose I could.. maybe some ruins may be of use to you afterwards, too.. good night.” When I woke up in the morning.. I no longer had fur.. My skin being the shade of green that my coat once was, I could feel my magic inside but I couldn’t tap into it anymore, probably because of my horn being gone… And I had… a flattened… face… I contained a squee as I leaned forward so I was face to face with Bonnie, scratching her behind the ears so she woke up, then I said. “Morning Bon-Bon, I got a dream wish!”

I frown, ignoring the odd sensation of not having movable ears. “Bon-Bon, it’s me, Lyra.” She calmed down a little “L-lyra..?” “Yep, it’s me… and I’m a human! Do you know how awesome that is!?” she finally calmed down and gave a soft smile.. “I'm glad it's you.. and that you're happy..” “Weeell~,” I reply with a grin. “It’s not just me that will be happy, fingers have a lot of benefits for others as well.” she blushed from the implications, and I simply giggle at her reaction and start scratching behind her ears again, making her hum happily. “Feels good, right?” “Mhm..” she hums happily and stretches out on my lap., and once Starburst wakes up I start cradling him. “Morning Starburst, did you sleep well?” he smiles and giggles in response. “Well.. I think you might be able to feed him like a human mother, now, Lyra.” Bonnie commented I gasp at the thought. “You’re right!” I proceed to bring him up to one of my nipples, and he starts suckling, and I feel milk come out. I gasped a little and relaxed in it… then got a naughty idea. “Hey Bon-Bon, I have two of them, remember~?” that got her blushing, and she started suckling from my free breast, and I blushed and let out a bit of a moan in surprise. I didn’t expect her to actually do it. After I moaned, and she tasted my milk, she seemed to get pretty into it. This was the point where I stopped her, let Starburst finish, let him take a nap in his basket, then rush back and pounce on Bonnie. “Ooh~! Sweetie Drops, your team will incapacitate and incarcerate the Cosmic Typhon in Tartarus, then you are to find the human infant and raise it as your own, or at least find a family to do so. I know of your relation to Lyra and how she is a human expert, since we cannot return it to its own world, It would be best if it was in the care of a pony who knows how to properly take care of such a creature. Do you understand your mission?” “Yes, your highness… and some of my objectives are already completed.” She replied, to which I raise an inquisitive eyebrow. “You see… Lyra already found the baby.. and I needed to inform you, that Lyra had a 'Dream Wish’, and was turned into a human by an unknown force.. both of them are healthy. And it's a boy.” She informed me calmly. I groan. “I believe I can answer that, I think it’s clear that one of the more obscure deities of our world has gained interest in the child… which means you’ll have to expect more strange occurrences.” “Such as, Your Highness..?” she asked. “Most likely the creatures of the Everfree being attracted by such Divine Intervention, resulting in larger and larger beasts daring to attack for the sole purpose of devouring the new avatar of the God or Goddess’ power so that they may absorb the powers for themselves.” “I'll take care of them.. thank you for letting me know, your highness.” I nod and gesture for them to leave, at which point they bow and do so. {Lyra's POV} “Oh you are so precious and adorable!” I cooed, feeding Starburst for the second time today. “Oh! Uhm.. a-are you new to Ponyville…?” Fluttershy hesitantly approached me. “Oh no, Flutters, I’ve been here a while.” “Wait.. l-Lyra…?” “My dream came true! I’m a human, and a mother!” She gasped, and trotted up and hugged me. “That's wonderful! Ooh! Is this your foal?” I nod. “This here is Starburst Cog, say hi to Fluttershy, Starburst.” he didn't say anything, but seemed to know how to wave. “Aww! He likes you!” Fluttershy squeed, smiling. “He's so adorable!” “And coming from the expert, that’s saying something.” she blushed. “Th-thanks..” she let go, and left.

Defenses… destroyed.. Offensive systems.. Destroyed.. Archives.. Corrupted.. AI integrity.. confirmed Metastable… well, at least one of us works around here.. Scanners… Suboptimal.. two human life signs located.. teleporters… extremely Suboptimal.. they'll only work one last time.. well… looks like I'm going..” in a brilliant flash of light, the figure was gone, as was a device that had no discernible purpose. {Lyra's POV} “Good morning Starburst! Do you know what today is?” I ask excitedly. “My… birthday..?” he said, unsure. “We’re not sure about that, but you said you remember some things from your world so you’ll be able to tell me at some point. No, today is gonna be your first day of school!” as I said that, he looked terrified, and latched onto me. “What’s wrong, Star?” “I don't wanna! Apologies for poking in your brain, but the Omni-tool works best when calibrated to a specific user’s nervous system. Now, your child has school, correct?” “Yes, but not yet, I got him up early so I could make him breakfast.” “Typically, a good bet is French Toast.” “Well now I can’t make that, he said to surprise him and it’s not exactly a surprise if he knows what I’m making.” “Apologies.” the voice was definitely feminine, but with a tone that was.. Sighing, I go out of the room to let Starburst get ready, then I gestured for Alexis to make a suggestion now that Star couldn’t hear us. “Another preferred human breakfast dish is a 'grilled cheese’. Particularly a favorite with children. Do you need instructions on how to prepare it?” I smile. “No need, it’s not just kids that like a good grilled cheese.” I say as I proceed to make two of them, one for me and one for Star. “Ooh!! Grilled cheese!” Star definitely smelled it. “yep!” he squeed to my reply as I set the table. “Yay!! Thanks, mom!” I smile as I dig into mine and watch as he does the same. “Mom… I'm scared to go to school..” “I know you are sweetie, but you can’t stay home forever.” he hesitantly nodded. “Don’t worry Star, no matter what me and Bon-Bon will keep you safe.” he hugged me appreciatively, and I hugged back. “And so shall I.” Alexis spoke up. “See? Your son made some sort of device, saying that 'he’d show them’ as he turned it on! There's no gravity!” Cheerilee explained to me. I sighed and called out to him. “Starburst! If you don’t stop disrespecting the laws of physics right now, you won’t be getting any ice-cream for a week!” he yelped, and swam back through the air inside “Hooves down, Everypony!” Cheerilee, who was currently floating upside down.. started to flail, realizing just what is about to happen as he said that, and once they were down I headed over to the teacher, helping her stand. “So, could you please bring Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara here, I can tell it was them who caused all this.” Cheerilee nodded, and brought them out, and Starburst also came out, carrying a tiny little device with an improvised power plug to plug in to a wall socket… “Now, you two, what were you bullying Starburst about, I promise if you are honest, I’ll make sure you aren’t in trouble, especially if it’s what I suspect.” Diamond replied first.. “he's a blank flank!..... He's.. Actually kinda scary, now, too..” “Your words hurt, Diamond.. Ponies aren't useless because they don't know their talents yet..” Starburst chimed in. “Actually Starburst, in case of humans, it’s more of a compliment, go ahead and keep using it… you know why, Star?” he seemed confused, now... “because humans don’t get cutie marks, ever. When I became human I lost mine, because humans don’t discover their talents, they develop them. If a human is dedicated and practices on anything, that thing can become one of their talents… and you know what the best part is? There is. No. Limit.” he smiled. “I really like building things..” he held up the device he built, which had a chunk of silvery metal in the middle. “Good!” I replied. “And the more you practice at it, the better you’ll be, eventually even better than some of the greatest pony inventors in Equestria.” he gasped, and got very excited, then turned to Cheerilee. “Sorry for scaring you, Miss Cheerilee..” he said, sounding a little nervous. “Just.. please don't do it in school again, okay?” “Or if you are going to do it, why not make something to help Cheerilee teach the class?” I suggested. He gasped, and nodded hyperactively, smiling. Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon were at a loss for words, and then all of a Sudden, Alexis spoke up. “I believe that chunk of metal inside that device is Element Zero. When electrically stimulated, it can increase and decrease mass in an area. Exactly how Starburst used it.” The two bullies were at a loss for words as to where the voice came from, as was Cheerilee. “In fact, the Mass Effect field generator’s very ability to function speaks highly about Starburst's aptitude for advanced practical engineering.” “Um… thanks Alexis.” “No problem.. I never did learn your name.” “...okay you were in my brain before, I know that’s a lie.” I said. “I.. tried to not intrude.. I didn't glean your name..” Alexis replied. “Lyra.” “Lyra? A good name..” “Thank you!” Alexis giggled as I said that. “So… AWESOME!!” I found it was Scootaloo that said that.. “That was amazing!! I could actually fly around through the air effortlessly!” “Problem is we don’t have a way for it to only affect you without some portable energy source and… wait, hey Starburst!” I rush off to find him while asking Alexis. “So those weird energy constructs that idly float on around you, am I right in saying they’re generated by you and can be manipulated?” “Not energy constructs. Hardlight constructs. And yes, they can be manipulated. However, i cannot Construct a power cell sufficient for such, and Starburst does not have the suitable materials to build a field intensifier and localizer.” she said. I shake my head. “No, I mean your ‘Hardlight’ has its own physical presence without adding weight, while mass manipulation has its own setbacks due to bones and muscles atrophying like in null gravity, if we instead made another Omni-tool using your designs, Scootaloo could get some Hardlight wings.” “That wouldn't solve the problem, sadly. Her wings move too fast to effectively create lift in a 1.7 G environment.” “She can’t rely on her natural wings anyway. everypony got letters from cheerilee about it, her wings are so small because the ley-lines in her body can’t flow magic into them, without magic her wings aren’t able to generate lift for long… It’s called Feather-fade syndrome and it’s really expensive to treat, and even then the wings will be stuck at that size and it will take a lot more effort to fly because of it, she doesn’t really know yet. I’m thinking if she had some way to form larger, weightless wings, her scootering around ponyville would give her enough wingpower to flap them efficiently.” “We can treat the condition.” Alexis declared with determination. “But if we treat it she’ll still be stuck with small wings.” “Negative. That would be if Ponies treated her condition. We can do better.” “But you don’t know anything about ley-lines and proper magic channels for stabilized flight generated from wing flaps and mana ventilation to produce thrust.” “I did not say she would be a normal Pegasus by the end of it. Element Zero can replicate the required effects. She would be the first Equestrian Biotic.” “... if this hurts her in anyway I’m cutting my arm off and throwing it, and you with it, into the incinerator.” “My primary directive is yours and Starburst's physical and mental health. I have determined that Starburst has formed a bond with Scootaloo. Harming her would be a direct violation of my primary directive, as it would hurt Starburst, and result in you harming yourself. And the Omni-tool is easily removable.” “I know, but it makes a statement.” I head over to the orange pegasus. “Hey scootaloo, did you enjoy your moment of flight?” she nodded hyperactively. “Lyra, be aware, the facilities required to help her are overgrown and require simple repairs.” Alexis warned me. “Don’t worry, as long as you can guide me through it we should be fine… now Scoots, how would you like to fly without needing that machine?” “That'd be awesome!” She squeed. “Alright then, Alexis? Where do we start?” in response, she created a holographic map, with several different icons on the map, one cross icon marked with a unique, circular icon overlaid on top of it… said facility was in the whitetail wood. “Alright, let your parents know where we’re going and we’ll head out right away.” Scootaloo looked down when I mentioned parents… “what’s wrong?” “I… my parents are.. gone..” Scootaloo started to cry, then Starburst hugged her. “...well then I guess this is awkward… well, Scootaloo, once you feel better me and your brother are gonna go to that facility with you.” Scootaloo gasped, and hugged me and Starburst tight, crying in joy. “Welcome to the family, Scoots.” “I-I'm ready.. Mom..” I give a soft smile, pick them both up and head off to whitetail woods. Once at the facility, I see what Alexis meant by it being overgrown.. it's literally covered in a tree. As in, the tree grew over it. “You'll have to cut through the roots.” “Got a knife?” “I suggest you hold your arm out.” I nodded, putting my two children down and holding my arm out in front of me, and a glowing red transparent blade formed with only tiny spacing from my arm and hand. “This is an Omni-blade. A minifactured micron thick blade that can cut through generally anything. It glows because it is very harmful to touch. Literally, the glow is for the user’s protection. The actual blade is invisible.” I proceed to cut open a path inside, then came a door, and the Omni-blade disappeared. “Okay, it's definitely still working. Use the Omni-tool to interface and open the door.” “But how? You don’t expect me to punch it, do you?” “.. Right, you're not used to using an Omni-tool… hold your arm like you're looking at a watch.” I do so, and a screen appears on my arm, saying 'Nearby Devices’. “Press the one titled Door.” I press it. “Now Swipe.” I do so, and the door opens, and we head into… The unknown…
Chapter 5: the facility.View OnlineTitan of Prey: The Beginning.Chapter 5: the facility.A few steps in, and lights come on with a noise of breakers connecting, revealing a dilapidated, hospital-like corridor. “This installation used to be an Initiative hospital, before the cataclysm.” Alexis said. “initiative?” Starburst asked. “Yes, thousands of years ago, the Pegasus Initiative came to this galaxy to find a new home, safe from the Reaper threat, and hoping to avoid the mistakes of the Andromeda Initiative, we came prepared for anything.. well… almost anything.. but upon the year 4000 AD, a disaster struck.. entire planets, turned uninhabitable to our kind.. the worlds became toxic.. and I, without humans to protect, became useless as anything other than custodian of the dilapidated facility I once took residence in.. this planet.. it's beautiful..” “Is it just me or do you just like to flatter everything on this world, including the world itself?” I ask. “This is the first time I have experienced this world Through the eyes of a human.. it is.. Amazing.” “Well, that makes two of us, I’m originally a unicorn.” “Oh, so that explains the intriguing genetic deviation from a normal human genome.. hang a left here.” She told me, and we continued to follow. “So Alexis, why not explain to Scootaloo the procedure, so she understands how we’re going to help.” “Okay, Scootaloo, we are going to be implanting nodules of Element Zero along your nerves in your wings to replicate what they should do naturally with magic. There's no need to worry, the medical machines here are precise to a micron, and you'll be sedated for the process. When you wake up, you'll be able to fly under your own power, permanently.” Most of Alexis's explanation Completely went over her head, but at the end, she was as hyper as a foal given a cup of coffee! Does.. Eve sound good, Lyra..?” Alexis asked me. “That works for me? How about you?” “I think.. it's nice..” and like that, Eve now has a new name.. “I.. I'm sorry I lied to you, Lyra.. I do love you..” she hugged and nuzzled me. “I love you too, Bon-Bon… just please… no more secrets, okay?” “Okay..” she nuzzled me again, and we sat there on the way to Canterlot.
