Early Years: Unexpected Power

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

As the years went by, Starlight began to grow. The mishap that brought her to this new world in the first place seemed to either erase or suppress her previous memories. Either way, she couldn't remember Equestria. Regardless, her capacity for knowledge was clear as her juvenile body slowly caught up to her adult mind. Aisha's new recording contract was able to put her into a decent school, but soon it become moot since she was able to bypass quite a number of grades.

That didn't mean her life was easy. As it turned out, Kingdom Come Records was a front for the Vice Kings, a street gang that all but ruled Stilwater. And the demands Aisha was being given were pretty extreme. Fortunately, anytime the company's manager, the new lieutenant Warren Willams, sent heavies to send a message, Johnny would send them back in varying states of injury.

How it went was simple. If they simple tried verbal intimidation, they merely needed an ice pack. If they tried to trash the apartment, they needed a cast. Tried to assault Aisha, they needed hospitalization. They tried to assault Starlight, and the police needed to be called in with a meat wagon and a body bag. It was only because Johnny was acting in defense of his daughter that he got away with this last one.

The odd thing was Aisha never got the short end as a result of this. They both chalked it up to Benjamin King, the Vice King's leader, talking down Williams. The man commanded a great deal of respect, even from Johnny, who normally had a real problem with authority figures. Still, the headaches were worth it, since the money brought in from Aisha's career was able to help raise Starlight.

"Say Dad," a now nine-year-old Starlight said, "Why did that man in the restaurant call you Ji-hoon?" The new family was just coming back from a dinner trip to Chinatown, where one of the patrons, a Chinese immigrant named Wong Sheng Tai, had called Johnny Ji-hoon. "Aw, that's just my birth name, from when my family was still living in Seoul, South Korea. It got changed when they immigrated here when I was just an infant."

"I didn't know that about you," Aisha noted. "Even you don't know everything about me, Eesh," Johnny replied, "After all, I'm a simple guy, so talking about my deepest, darkest secrets is not something I normally do." Aisha nodded. "I hear ya, Johnny." Such a simple explanation for her question was certainly enough for Starlight. Still, she had a nagging feeling in her mind. Like something was pushing against her skull.

"You doing, okay Sweetie?," Johnny asked. "Just more headaches," Starlight said, "They've been getting more frequent, and more severe." "Well, you are getting close to puberty," Aisha assured her. "I don't know Eesh," Johnny said, "Headaches aren't normally part of the package deal when it comes to puberty. Least it wasn't for me." It was just a few short days before Starlight's tenth birthday. Well, as close as Johnny and Aisha could approximate from the time Starlight showed up at their apartment's door.

"Mom! Dad! Something weird's happening to me!" This cry from Starlight got Johnny and Aisha racing to her room. What they saw completely surprised them. Starlight's eyes and hands were glowing with a transparent turquoise light, as were several objects around the room. Objects that were currently floating. "Okay...," Johnny muttered, "Definitely something worth waking us up for at just past midnight."

"Right on her birthday too," Aisha said that very morning, "What on Earth is going on? I mean, just yesterday Starlight was perfectly normal, and now on her tenth birthday she suddenly has some sort of... Telekinetic magic or something. How are we gonna handle this? Like just make her stop or something?" "No way," Johnny said, "What are we, the fucking Dursleys? This has gotta have something to with Starlight's unexplained headaches, and if she doesn't find some sort of control or outlet, it could just make her head explode."

Aisha nodded. "Yeah, you're right. This is just part of who she is. But still, how are we gonna help her control this? It's not like we can offer her a point of reference." "No, but I might be able to help her learn some mental discipline," Johnny suggested, "I happen to know a few good martial arts dojos that'd be perfect for helping her." Aisha chuckled. "While you're at it, you might as well teach her how to fight on the streets. With the Carnales rising up again after so many years, it's getting dangerous to walk the streets of Stilwater."

It wasn't just the Carnales that had Julius worried. A new gang was already forming, taking advantage of the power struggle between Los Carnales and the Vice Kings, calling themselves the Westside Rollerz. The turf war was starting to spill into the Row, and Julius didn't like it one bit. 'There's nothing for it,' he thought to himself, 'I'll just have to start my own gang to put an end to all this.'

He quickly staked his claim on the old church in Mission Beach, then got to work planning. He needed a new color to differentiate the new gang from the others. At first he considered green, but thought that might send the wrong message. Finally he settled on purple, to give the impressions of regal protectors. 'Protectors living in a church... I think I might know a good name for this new gang... The Third Street Saints.'

Now that he had the basis for his new gang, Julius started walking the streets, looking for anyone who might be willing to fight against the three gangs threatening the peace of Stilwater. It would take time to match their numbers, but Julius was patient. If there was one thing Ben King got right, it was that it was important to know when to wait, when to build, and when to act. And right now waiting and building were more important than acting. 'This time, I'll do it right.'

Author's Note

I've been getting some largely positive feedback from this community. Thanks you guys. One more chapter of this prologue before we get into the first Saints Row game. Now that we've established that Starlight still has access to her magic, next is making sure it's established that it won't be a storybreaker power.
