Cold Days

Previous Chapter

I shivered as the snow was thrown down so suddenly. This strange blast of cold really messed with my scheduled. It was a strange and terrifying day today. Slasher had no studying to do with Rue, because their tutor was unable to make it to the castle because it was almost within the negative temperatures. We were stuck inside the rooms, because even the hallways were to cold to walk in because of the weather. The one time solid stone walls were a bad choice. No maids were in the hallway, no servants to bring us food, and nothing to do left all five of us on edge. Virka was starting to get whiny and ready to run around. Fylakas was sitting near the window reading a book with bags under his eyes, and I was sitting off in the corner, dozing in and out of consciousness due to boredom. Slasher was sitting on the bed and Rue was tending to testing out magic, tilting her head at the lack of results. Lunch would be delivered soon through a pulley system that was set up.

"Can we go outside Abayomi?" I tensed up at my name and turned to stare at the little boy who had questioned me for the fifth time.

"I keep telling you we could die if we go out there, Virka. it's just to cold." I sat up and rubbed my forehead, the boredom of sitting in the tiny room was about to kill me. I was ready to scream with boredom and frustration.

"We could try to make it to Wench's room so you can play with Vinney... If you'd like." Fylakas was looking at us with a look of contemplation, and I knew it would likely stimulate the three of us. Slasher had no problem staying in the room, and staying put, but we humans were not. I nodded to Fylakas and stood up, taking a blanket and wrapping around my shoulders.

"Alright, I suppose that should be fun." Virka's little face lit up with excitement as Fylakas wrapped him up in a blanket. He carefully made sure he was wrapped warmly. He wrapped himself last and picked Virka up, and smiled.

"You're going that far?" Rue seemed a little scared as I nodded, pulling the blanket tighter around me.

"Yeah. Virka needs to do something. It's not healthy for him to be stuck in one room for this long. And it doesn't help that I'm getting really frustrated as well." I rubbed my forehead, my inactivity likely the cause of my oncoming headache. "We'll just be heading over a few halls. It's not that hard to find our way."

She nodded slowly and sighed, her horn lighting up and the three of us were engulfed in something warm.

"I cast a warming spell on you. Keep yourselves covered and you'll be warm. It'll be enough to send you there." She smiled slightly and nodded as she continued reading her book. We walked out the door, and I gave her a thankful nod.

"Thanks!" I wondered out into the hall, the chill of the hallway making me shiver as I pulled the blanket around me.

The door closed and it was just us in the eerily silent and empty hallway, leaving us to stand there in the brightness of the light from the windows. Despite the grey sky, the bright white fluffy substance outside left us with an illumination brighter than single torch could burn. I shivered again, this time from the eerie quiet that filled the halls.

"Well... Lets get going shall we?" We started walking slowly, chatting very little as to avoid being heard. The collars we were wearing kept others from hearing us, but they were still cautious.

A few minutes passed by and we were left to our own devices as we walked, being quiet as we took step after step, smiling a little together as we enjoyed each others company. I should have brought some food for Virka, but I suppose he'll just have to do. I wonder if they'll be as irritable as we were. I hope not, I really hope not. We were ready to snap by just sitting there for a while with Virka whining. But them having to deal with a hungry Vinney and a hungry Virka? That might be to much.

"Alright, we're here." I stopped when Fylakas stopped suddenly, he having somehow moved in front of me while I was deep in thought, he smiled and knocked softly on the door. There was a gasp and the sound of hoof steps with a worried flutter of feathers and a small sound of concern.

"Hello? Who's there??" Wench sounded concerned as we opened the door, me smiling softly at her same old concerned voice. I let out a small whistle as I knocked.

"Hey Wench. It's me, Baladia." I smiled a little as I spoke, and the door opened quickly. I was covered in a blanket of feathers, and all I heard was the sound of Virka yelping over the flurry of ruffling.

"Wench! Wench calm down!!" Fylakas was struggling to stand up again after being knocked over by the attack of fluff that was Wench.

"What on Equss were you doing out there?! it's below freezing!!" She looked freaked out, her feathers fluffed up to the point of being awful. We looked at each other and I sighed.

"Virka wanted to play with Vinney, and it's not healthy for him to stay cooped up for to long." She looked a little more relaxed now that she saw we were both wearing heavy blankets around us while Virka was wrapped up in one. She let us go and I let out a sigh of relief as she did, and I unwrapped myself from the blanket and setting it near the door. I gave a small sigh at the warmth of the room, the fireplace blazing. It felt nice.

Off in the corner, I saw a little griffon. They were sitting up by themselves, smiling as Virka approached, offering him a toy with some baby talk. Virka nodded as he listened, as if he could understand. I sat on the bed and watched them as Fylakas talked in the background.

Virka seemed to be babbling a little like Vinney as he talked, and Vinney responded with a giggle and more baby talk. Could they really be talking together? That's strange. They started throwing stuffed animals at each other playfully, smiling and laughing. They were trying not to make a huge mess, but it ultimately failed. They ended up overall, throwing enough toys at each other to cover the floor. I started to get tired as I watched, my mind still numb from the lack of stimulation, adn I fell asleep quickly.

Boring day for a boring week.
