The food is nice, but the view is way better

That evening at eight, Moonstone stood in front of Lightning Blossom’s door. She self-consciously checked that her mane and tail still looked fine, before knocking on the door.

It didn’t take long before Lightning Blossom opened, a light scowl on her face. “You’re late. What did I tell you about ponies that waste my time?”

Moonstone arched an eyebrow and asked, “What do you mean, I’m late? It’s eight o’clock sharp.”

“Means it’s far too late and my stomach is growling,” Lightning smirked. “Geeze, first pony to not run away.”

Moonstone giggled and said, “Hey, it’s not my fault if you forgot to eat lunch.”

“Hey, it’s your fault you bring so much work to me,” Lightning jabbed back.

“You’re the one that gave me the job. Now come on, I’m hungry too!” She responded with a grin.

“Aren’t you missing something, sweet cheeks?” Lightning asked, an eyebrow raised.

Moonstone’s head tilted slightly in confusion as she asked, “Uhhh, like what?”

Lightning grinned. “Isn’t the lady supposed to offer me her hoof and side for the walk?”

Moonstone giggled and grinned, before holding out her hoof. “Oh, of course, how could I forget?”

She waited and waited, Lightning still with that silly grin before facehoofing. “You know I’m bucking with you, right?”

Moonstone giggled and put her hoof down. “Of course, but I like to be sarcastic, too.”

Lightning chuckled. “And Blue Moon always says you are a quiet and shy one.”

“Yeah, well… if somepony else is being sarcastic, I’m more inclined to reply in kind,” Moonstone replied before gently nudging the other mare. “Now come on, the best pizza in Canterlot is waiting, and you’re not the only one who’s hungry!”

“Best pizza in Canterlot. I hope you’re right, or I’m not only taking dessert later,” Lightning mumbled quietly.

Moonstone’s ears perked as she asked, “What was that? I didn’t catch it.”

“Nothing, let’s go and eat something.”

Moonstone nodded, smiling, before leading Lightning through Canterlot, not stopping until they were close to the edge of the city. The buildings were a bit less extravagant, but still more so than you’d find in the likes of Ponyville. She finally stopped in front of a small diner simply named Malt’s.

“Welcome to Malt’s, home of the best pizza, burgers, and shakes in Canterlot. Well, I think so, at least,” she said, turning to Lightning.

“Interesting. I do not know this place, so we shall see,” Lightning grinned. “Let’s go!”

Moonstone opened the door and held it, looking to Lighting with a smirk and saying, “After you my lady.

“Thank you.” Lightning mockingly bowed, before stepping in, only to stop and turn in front of Moonstone. “I’m going to have your flank some other time for that.”

Moonstone just giggled and said, “I know, but it’s worth it.”

“Heh, I think you are confusing me with somepony else. We’ll see if it is worth it!”

“I guess we’ll see. Now go on, pizza awaits!” Moonstone giggled.

“You sure you’re not just getting cold? Your muzzle is red.” Lightning stopped and gave her a sultry smile. “Or can’t tear your gaze from my flank again?”

Moonstone smirked and replied, “Hey, I asked you out to dinner. I met your requirements for staring at it.”

“You seem so sure about that, yet you only invited me to dinner,” Lightning smirked back.

Moonstone arched an eyebrow. “Yeah, and that was what you said to do if I wanted to stare at it.”

For a moment, Lightning looked completely insulted, yet Moonstone couldn’t tell why. “Tell me, Moonstone, are you a batpony or a virgin? Or both?”

Moonstone recoiled, surprised at the reaction. “H-hey, I was just teasing. I hadn’t even been staring at it...”

“I know that you silly filly. Now, think again why I might have told you what I did.”

Moonstone tilted her head and thought about it for a moment. “Umm, you want to take me?”

Lightning cuffed her with a leathery wing, winking. “Try again.”

“You want to have fun?”

Another wing.

“...You like me, but you’re not an average batpony, so you follow tradition and let me figure it out myself?”

“Finally,” Lightning sighed, recoiling. “Uh, maybe. Let’s find out. We’ve still got a date and food ahead.”

Moonstone giggled. “Well then, let’s go, you’re standing in the middle of the door and it’s getting cold out here!”

“Yeah yeah,” came the answer, before Moonstone received a soft swat from Lightning’s tail.

Moonstone just giggled again before ushering the other pony inside and closing the door behind them. She led Lightning to a booth and sat down on one side. A few moments later a tan unicorn with a chocolate brown mane and tail walked up with two menus and set one down in front of each mare. He then looked to Moonstone and smiled.

“Hey Moonstone, long time no see,” the stallion said, before turning to Lighting. “And hello to you, miss. Welcome to Malt’s. I’m Malt, and I’ll be your waiter this evening.”

Lightning raised an eyebrow at Moonstone, before turning back. “I’m Lightning Blossom.”

“Nice to meet you, Lightning Blossom. Go ahead and look through the menu, and I’ll be back in a few minutes to take your order,” Malt replied, before turning and walking towards another table.

“Well,” Lightning started, shoving the menu over to Moonstone. “Seems like you know this stallion and his food, so you decide.”

Moonstone smiled. “Yeah, I’ve been coming here for years. His combination’s pretty good.”

“I really hope you mean the food.”

Moonstone rolled her eyes. “Yes, I mean the food. Malt’s a great guy and all, but he’s not really my type,” she snorted.

“And what, pray tell, is your type?” Lightning asked, fluttering her eyelashes innocently.

“Well…” Moonstone started.

“Yesssss?”

“They should be tall, have a tongue as sharp as a sword, and enough wit to wield it. They should also be unique, not just your average pony. Aaand, the ability to fling a shield and one-shot a colt in the back of the head is a plus,” Moonstone said, smirking. “Sound like anypony we know?”

“I don’t know. Do I know her personally?” Lightning asked, humming in thought.

“I don’t know. Her name’s Lightning, she’s a real character. I think you’d like her,” Moonstone replied, stifling a giggle.

“She sounds pretty interesting. Maybe I can meet her someday,” Lightning joined in the giggles.

“That’d be fun to see. Just be careful, or you may get a shield thrown at your face,” Moonstone added.

Lightning actually looked proud at that. “I'm pretty sure she just wanted to train her aim.”

“Maybe so, but it was still pretty impressive,” Moonstone replied with a smile.

“By Luna, such a sweet talker. I hope the food comes soon or I might nibble on you.”

“Well then, we’d better hope Malt comes back soon,” Moonstone said with a smile, before mumbling, “Not that I’d mind…”

A few moments later, Malt walked over with a pen and pad of paper. “So, what can I get you?”

“A large combination, and two of your chocolate malts, please!” Moonstone replied with a smile.

Malt nodded and wrote it down. “Alright, I’ll bring that out soon.” He smiled and walked off to place the order.

“A lieutenant ordering for her superior. You got guts,” Lightning smirked.

Moonstone returned the smirk with one of her own. “Sometimes superiors like to see their juniors be a bit gutsy. Plus, you told me to make the order,” she giggled.

“Yeah, yeah.”

Moonstone grinned and leaned forward. “So, I’ve told you my type. Quid pro quo, why don’t you tell me about yours?”

“I don't have a type,” Lightning laughed softly. “There is not much to tell. I like ponies with strong minds and those that stand behind their words. Everything else is just connection, I guess.”

“Fair enough. I think those are important qualities, as well,” Moonstone replied with a smile.

“That's nice to hear.”

Moonstone tilted her head once more. “You know, sometimes I have no idea if you are teasing, or trying to insult me.”

“I can assure you, insulting you is not my intent. By now you should know my personality,” Lightning shrugged.

“I do, it’s still hard to tell sometimes, though,” Moonstone replied.

Now it was Lightning’s turn to tilt her head. “Are you giving up already?”

Moonstone smirked. “Hardly. There’s a difference between giving up, and saying you confuse me. Besides, if you weren’t a challenge, you’d be boring.”

“So I still get your flank? Sweet!” Then, silently, she waved with a hoof. “Let me tell you a secret. Come closer.”

Moonstone laughed at that and shook her head, leaning in. “Oh yeah? What’s that?”

Lightning leaned in as well, until her muzzle was past her date’s, then she extended her tongue to lick over a fluffy ear, whispering huskily, “I’m still going to let you work for my flank.”

Moonstone let out a soft “Eep!” in surprise at the lick, before smirking and replying, “I wouldn’t expect anything less.”

“Good. I’m really hungry, you know.”

Moonstone opened her mouth to reply, just as Malt walked up with their food and said, “Well I guess it’s good your food’s here then.” He chuckled and set the pizza down between them, as well as the shakes and a plate in front of each of them. “Enjoy!”

“That wasn’t what I meant, but whatever,” Lightning whispered as he departed, but her eyes sparkled at the sight of the delicious food.

Moonstone just giggled. “Well, let’s see if Malt’s pizza is as good as I remember.”

“I hope so, or I have my dessert early. Maybe even right here,” Lightning smirked.

Moonstone giggled softly again. “Not that I’m against dessert before dinner, but these booths aren’t the most comfortable.”

“You never had real, traditional sex, right?”

Moonstone shook her head. “No, I’ve never dated a traditional batpony.”

“That’s weird. You are one as well, so it is kind of confusing. My parents told me about it really early,” Lightning said, still focused on the food.

“My parents told me about it, but I’ve never had it. I’ve only dated a couple of ponies, and neither of them were batponies.” Moonstone replied as she grabbed a slice for herself.

“Well, are you against it or okay with it? That’s kind of important for me,” Lightning snorted and continued. “I know how normal ponies see us, but I think only the traditional thing bonds as it is supposed to do.”

“I’m certainly not against trying it. We’ll have to see how I feel about it afterwards, but I get the feeling I’ll enjoy it,” Moonstone replied.

“That’s good. At least you are open towards it. The last pony I dated went off screaming as I showed him my fangs.”

“Yeah, well, some ponies are just pansies. Not much we can do about it,” Moonstone said, taking a sip of her shake and smiling.

“He was afraid of fangs,” Lightning deadpanned. “As if he never noticed them on me before. Proves to me he just wanted the sex.”

Moonstone nodded. “Sounds like it. I know not all stallions are like that. I have friends that aren’t, but sometimes they’re the only ones you can find. Usually because the ones that are worth anything are already taken.”

“Yeah. Let’s say I have had enough of stallions, especially guards.”

“Yeah, most stallions in the guard are ex-jocks ruled by testosterone. Not something I want to deal with either…” Moonstone replied.

Lightning hummed. “And if Luna, Blue Moon, Night Watch, Moon Shield and Red Wave are to believed, mares are a thousand times better anyways.”

“I’ve heard mares rave just as much about stallions. I’m fine with either, as long as the pony isn’t an idiot,” Moonstone said.

“Well, the numbers explain most mare on mare couples. Stallions are rare in some cities.”

“That’s true, and good ones are even rarer. I hadn’t thought about that. It does make a lot of sense,” Moonstone replied with a thoughtful hum.

“It also explains why Luna only takes mares into her chambers,” Lightning added. “Anyways, we should probably start to eat?”

Moonstone nodded and smiled. “Yeah, we probably should. Before the hot things get cold and the cold things get hot.” She then giggled and took a bite of the pizza. “Mmm, and it’s as good as I remembered!”

Lightning took a bite as well, her eyes immediately lighting up. “This is delicious!”

Moonstone grinned. “See? What’d I tell you?” She giggled again and took another bite.

Both mares ate quietly, but not without staring at each other. Lightning grinned and showed off her fangs with each bite. It was an old ritual, showing your fangs to a pony or bat of interest. If they took the bait, it would be more than interesting.

Moonstone smirked and showed her own fangs off in return as she ate, looking forward to what would come after dinner.

That little minx, Lightning thought quietly, enjoying the food. And, of course, the view.
