The First Order has occupied Equestria. Their banners, flags, propaganda, and their military are some of the only things the ponies now see in their day-to-day lives. Having already lived under a tyrannical regime the ponies are clearly not happy. Even worse, they're unable to make contact with the Resistance for help. And even if they'd manage to send a signal through the weak naval power of the Resistance wouldn't even be able to safely send troops to liberate the ponies. Finding themselves without outside help the ponies decide to rise up against the First Order.
