As Black as a Midnight on a Moonless Night

You sit at a table, alone, inside a chamber that is dim, like you have done every night before, for the past two weeks and a half. You were a morning person, so staying up late tended to mess with your sleep schedule, but no matter how sleepy you were, or how much you would regret it the next day, you never missed an appointment with the Princess of the Night.
Speaking of night, your gaze is drawn to the only light entering the room: the faint sunlight shining through the glass balcony doors. You look outward, past the golden spires and alabaster walls of Canterlot Castle, to the mountains that stand in the horizon. It's a sight you've seen countless times, and yet, your emerald eyes never tire of the spectacle. In fact, your drowsiness is even assuaged by the view of the woman standing on the balcony. She stands tall, taller than yourself, with her back towards you as she faces the sky. Her head is low, an aurora of dark blue forming around her horn, as the moon rises past the silhouette of her figure.
You gasp, wondering how, from all the creatures in this strange land, that you got to view such sacred art first hand. Before you know it, the moon comes to a natural stop in the indigo sky, and the magic ceases from the blue horn.
You rise. It's time to do your job.
You cross the chamber, arriving at the balcony doors. You take a moment to straighten your back, crack your neck, and place your hand on the golden handle to the door. With a sharp inhale, you pull back the door.
"Another job well done," you say in a bow, despite her facing away. You promptly rise. "When you're ready to come inside, I'll have the table prepared."
Her head begins to turn, and for a moment, you swore your heart had jolted. She gazes at you from over her shoulder; her lips parted as she pants softly, though she seems to catch her breath once you two make eye-contact.
Luna then smiles.
"I have finished with my duties for the night," Luna says, turning around to you. "So please have the table set immediately." She begins to walk, causing you to step aside and hold open the door; your grace passing you by. Unexpectedly, she sorely massages a hand into her shoulder. "Make sure you brewed plenty of coffee—I need quite the pick me up."
It’s unprofessional, but you chuckle under your breath.
"Understood." You close the door once she’s inside, making way afterward to the servant's table. Trays of sweets and other such things are atop it, making you grin—you had a bit of a sweet tooth yourself. You pick up a tray with your left hand, lopping two cups through the fingers of your right, before picking up the pot of coffee.
You turn around and are awash in blue light. Luna, already sitting down at the table with her legs crossed, snaps her fingers up in the air. In response, the candles perched around the room come alive in small blue flames, casting the room in a low, indigo glow.
It always amazes you how easily these creatures use their magic. It doesn’t exist back on earth, so to see it now and before your eyes, as well as used so much, that it's not hard to think you've just in some strange dream.
A drawn-out sigh snaps you from your thoughts. You clear your throat, shake of your head, and present yourself before the table with the grace an assistant should have.
"Here we have the treats of the night," you say, gently placing the tray in the middle of the table. "Soft cookies, sweet candies, and a few croissant."
Your left-hand takes the pot of coffee, freeing your right hand to place the white cups on the table. You lean over to fill Luna's cup first, but as you do, you notice the proximity you have to Luna's face. She looks up at you, her turquoise eyes casting a small glow of their own, and your heart begins to race.
Luna looks at you with such curiosity that you're having trouble meeting her gaze. Her fluffy ears puff up at the sound of coffee filling her cup, her gaze shifting to your tilting of the pot, and you wonder if you somehow have messed up your posture.
"Do you still possess unfamiliarity when you're around me, human?" Luna asks, making your hand to jolt. You berate yourself for slipping up. "We've been doing this for some time now, and yet, your hand twitches whenever gets too close to me."
You gulp, lost for a response, but you quickly take joy in seeing her cup is now filled. You stand tall once and gaze down. You swallow again; she looks saddened by your lack of an answer.
You attempt to save yourself while you still can.
"I'm sorry, Princess, but I'm afraid my hand can't keep itself still within a proximity of such beauty," you say with a smile, raising the hand that had given you away, shaking it as your lower it towards her. "Whereas my mouth can lie, my hand cannot. If there comes a time you think I haven't spoken the truth, merely gaze at my hand, and it will give myself away."
Silence. Her eyes blink, looking at your hand which is only a few inches away from her face, and you can't help but cringe, thinking you've somehow insulted her and made yourself into a fool. You begin to pull back your hand, preparing your deepest apologies, when something unexpected happens to you.
Luna clasps your hand with hers, the fur of her fingers caressing your skin, giving you a light squeeze. She looks up at you. "Has what you've told me been a lie?"
You shrug your shoulders. "Why don't you give it a try?"
To your surprise, she does. Luna pulls your hand towards her, causing you lean closer to accommodate her request her, the proximity not kind on your fragile heart. The first thing that captures you, the thing that made you bend a knee to this particular royalty, is, of course, her hair.
The wisps of midnight blue float around her head, pinpricks of white and small constellations making themselves apparent in her hair; you don’t doubt you could get lost gazing into her hair like you do the midnight stars. Both are equally as gorgeous, one requiring not a price to be viewed, but something always kept you coming back to Luna.
Your gaze falls on her face. Her blue horn prods out from her mane, only the tip of it viable to your gaze, which just makes it all the more alluring to you. Half of her face is hidden behind her mane, but that only amplifies the beauty of that which is exposed. A layer fur covers her face, as it does the rest of your body, but it's here that you wish more than anywhere else to nuzzle your cheek against. You never dare make such a move on her, always berating yourself afterward for having such thoughts about your Princess.
Speaking of which, her eyes are set upon your hand. True to your word, it shakes in her grasp, more so when her slender fingers give it another squeeze. It was customary for the Princess to consider your existence like that of an odd experiment, which was why you were among few to receive her curious gaze.
Anyone else would have been annoyed to be viewed like this, but not you, for you knew the reasons why she was the way she is, and that thought alone helped to bring comfort into your heart.
"You're beautiful, Princess," you say, and she looks up at you, a twinkle in her eyes as she gazes into yours. "You don't need the opinion of an assistant for it to be so. Just look in the mirror to see the truth, or hear it your subject who are all willing to agree."
"I only see myself when I look in the mirror," Luna says. "And as much as I love my subjects, none of them have seen me as you have. I want to know, through all you had to endure because of my hands, what yours feels towards me."
She then places your hand and places on her chest, and your eyes go wide with surprise. You lose your breath and your legs buckle, unable to contain the sensation you felt. Luna had a thick sweater on, but it did a fantastic job of outlining her bust, which your hand is currently on top.

Silence hangs over the room as she looks at you, Luna's face is pensive, and before you could ask her what was wrong, she asks you a question first.
"Do you ever miss home?"
The question takes you by surprise, which you cleverly hide behind the rim of your cup. You tried thinking of home, of the lab and the mistake, of learning of the infinite worlds just to land in this one by chance. You think of your feelings as you sip your coffee, only come up empty.
"I'm not sure," you say after pulling the cup from your lips, your eyes set upon the reflection inside the cup. "I think...that some nights, I do miss home." You look up at the Princess. "But...I don't think it's for the reasons you're expecting."
"And just what would those reasons be?"
"I don't miss my home," you say, shaking your head. "Or, at least, the apartment I used to call home—that's the place I was always the loneliest."
"You...you've felt lonely before?"
"Who hasn't?" you respond with a pitiful chuckle. Your gaze settles back down on the coffee. "I...I didn't have a family back there, or anyone who I could truly call a friend. That was a fact that didn't bother me too much, too busy with my shitty job, but at night..."
You sigh, retaking your cup and drinking the hot liquid; its warmth spread throughout your body, making you feel a bit more at ease. But try as you might, there’s shiver in your body you couldn't entirely knockoff.
"I'd lie in bed, the only light that of the distant room, pondering how I'd messed my life up." You're finding it harder to make eye-contact with the Princes, but you reason you'd have difficulty making eye-contact with anyone. "The thoughts would get deeper, and then darker, and when it's that late at night, sometimes you're willing to try more drastic things."
You gulp down the rest of the coffee. Its warmth does nothing for your shiver.
"That's the reason why I became a morning person," you finally say, and for some reason, with shame. "The pain is still there, but it doesn't hurt as much. It puts stuff into perceptive, and make some route harder to take."
You let the words float in the air. You'd been probed about what your world was like when you first arrived here, but those questions began to fade with your time here, and no one had asked you how you felt about the whole ordeal. Not that you blamed them, but it would have been nice to get your feelings out there.
"I'm sorry," you say, looking up at the Princess. "You asked me a simple question, and I gave you a long-winded response."
"No," Luna replies, her voice stern, which catches you off-guard. "It should be I who is apologizing. I have known that you enjoyed the sun more than you do the moon, yet still drag you out to these meetings, never asking you for your displeasure. She nods her head, and in that small movement, you catch it: you catch her sadness. And when she looked to you again, you could understand all that she felt through just her eyes alone.
"It's because the nights I spend with you are the nights' loneliness is the furthest thing from my mind," you say, surprisingly without shame. "On the other nights, I think back to home, only because I wasn't as much as an outsider there. Luna stares at you blankly, as if expecting you to say more, but that was all your feelings laid bare. So you sit, in silence, the blue glow of the candles surrounding you both, as well as that of moonlight. You look at the moon—it doesn't hurt you now.

Luna stands before you now, a few inches taller than you. She gazes down at you. "Yet I chose you. Care to know why?"
You gulp, and you nod.

You keep still. Luna's words ring inside her head, making you feel things you've never quite felt before, and they cause you let your head rest against her chest. You shift all your weight onto her in the act of trust, your arms warping around her back, as you finally hug this gorgeous woman back.
"Thank you, Luna," you say, voice muffled by her sweater. "You...you don't know how badly I needed to hear you say that, that I'm not the only one feeling alone in this happy world." You pull back slightly, looking up into her eyes. "That you need me the same way I need you."
Luna smiles, running her fingers through your hair. You delight in the sensation, indulging in the feeling of her embrace, not wanting this night to end. You know it must, sooner or later, and this will all be a memory.

"This is correct," Luna says. "So will you—"
