Matt’s Adventures in Equestria
Through the Portal - Part 1

When you think of a 14 year old British boy, what usually comes to mind? Roadman? Smokes and drinks young? Bunks off school? Well, none of that really applies to me. I’m Matthew, but most people call me Matt. In a way, I live a life like any normal person my age would; go to school 5 days a week, get homework done over the weekend, occasional trips out into town and the like. You know what I mean. But all that changed one day. I don’t know how it happened, I don’t know why, but all I do know is that my life may never be the same again. I’ve kept quiet about it for a little while now, but now it’s time I revealed it to the world. My parents would never believe me if I told them, so I need to tell someone I can trust. I can trust you, right? Whatever happens, this needs to stay strictly between you and me. Got it? Cool. Now pay attention.
It was a normal Saturday for me; just a lie in before getting up for breakfast, then lounging on the sofa. After all that, I took my wallet, jacket and phone and left the house to go out into the nearby town, like I mentioned earlier. It was once I turned the first corner and left my road, that the first of three things happened. Something rather peculiar. I looked down and noticed something that looked like a large, hot pink puddle. It was especially unusual because I’d never noticed it there before.
‘It shan’t be that important’ I thought to myself, so I went on my way. At least, I tried to go on my way, but then came the second thing that happened, this time being very peculiar. I was stepping in the puddle as if I never noticed it in the first place when the ground suddenly seemed to fall away from under my feet! I was now falling through empty air, with my hair sweeping backwards. I then thought that it couldn’t be a puddle and decided it must’ve been a part of the pavement that had been left out by mistake. But I immediately scratched that. I would’ve noticed it on all the other times I walked down that route, it would’ve been practically impossible to miss. Then, suddenly, it hit me like walking into a lamppost.
‘This isn’t a puddle,’ I realised, ‘it’s a portal!’ Now that I looked around me as I was falling, it certainly looked like a portal. It sort of reminded me of the time vortex from Doctor Who. But before I could think of anything else, I could see a white light from the end of the portal. It was then that a worrying question came to mind and it was this: how the hell was I going to stop? I could hardly think of an answer before I flew through the end of the portal. I let out a “WOAH!!” of surprise before I fell flat onto my face. Then everything went black.
I must’ve hit the ground with such force, I’d knocked myself out. Or either I hit the wall or the ceiling, I didn’t know yet. I mustn’t have been out for too long though, and when I came to, the third thing happened. This, ironically, was the most peculiar thing of all. The first thing I noticed was that I could hear two voices.
“Do you think it’s gonna be alright?” said one, a young, masculine sort of voice.
“I’m not sure yet,” said another, this time a feminine sounding voice, “but I think we shall find out soon enough”.
“Look, it’s moving!” cried the male voice. These voices sounded a little blurred because I was only just regaining my hearing. I let out a groan and rolled over onto my back. Quite soon, my vision began to come back, and I could dimly make out where I was. From the looks of things, it seemed that the place I was in was mostly made out of wood. What’s more, hundreds, probably even thousands of books covered the walls. I pushed myself up into a sitting position, letting out another groan as I did so.
“Oh, bollocks” I grunted, raising a hand to my forehead. There was a throbbing pain in my right side, no doubt where I hit my head once I’d arrived after my unusual journey. I blinked quickly four times and then my vision was back in full effect again. I then caught sight of what possibly was the source of the voices. On one side was a pony with a light purple coat, a dark blue mane with purple and pink streaks and a horn poking out of it. On the other was a small dragon with purple scales and dark green spikes running from the top of his head down his back to the end of his tail. He was just as tall as the pony’s back. I stared. I stared some more. I even blinked four more times to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. It was true. I wasn’t seeing things, I was actually staring at a pony and a dragon! For some reason I couldn’t explain, they both looked somewhat familiar. I was sure I’d seen something like them before but I couldn’t think what. There was a long and awkward silence. Neither me, nor the pony or the dragon knew what to say or even do next. Eventually, the pony spoke up.
“Good afternoon” she said, in a clear voice.
“Er...um...good afternoon” I replied, looking rather embarrassed. I was also feeling rather puzzled. Since when could ponies talk? Was there a scientific discovery that I had missed out on and no one had told me about? I left the thought in my mind and continued. “Sorry to...er...”, I tried to think of the right term to say, “‘drop in’ like this”.
“Oh, that’s alright,” the pony chuckled, “I was practising some magic and I must’ve opened a portal by mistake”.
“Uh, I don’t mean to be rude,” said the dragon, speaking for the first time, “but what are you anyway?”
“Oh, I’m a...” I started, I had a feeling in the pit of my stomach that this was going to be somewhat awkward to explain. “I’m a human” I finally said.
“Wow!” said the pony in awe, “I’ve read a lot about humans, but I’ve never had the chance to meet one for real before”.
“Oh!” I exclaimed, rather taken aback, “Well, I’m glad you know a lot about us”.
The pony smiled. “Anyway, I’m sure you have a name, don’t you?” she asked.
“Of course, I’m Matthew,” I replied, “but you can call me Matt. Pleasure to meet you”. I held out my hand for the pony to shake.
“Pleasure to meet you too” said the pony, accepting the handshake (hoofshake? Hand-hoofshake? I dunno). As I was shaking the pony’s hoof, I noticed something on it’s flank. It looked like a sort of tattoo; a hot-pink, six-pointed star with 5 other stars surrounding it but these were white. It was also partly covered by a set of wings. That’s when I finally realised where I’d seen this pony before. I’d seen her on a TV show that I had once watched and had rather enjoyed.
After we’d stopped shaking, I said, “You’re Twilight, aren’t you? Twilight Sparkle?” The pony gaped at me as if I had just grown an extra head.
“Well, yeah, but how did you know?”
“Oh, it’s a long story,” I chuckled, “it’d probably take me too long to explain. I’ll certainly have to tell you at some point”. I looked at the dragon who, incidentally, was just as surprised as Twilight. “And you must be Spike” I guessed.
“Y-y-y-y-yeah...” stammered Spike. He must’ve thought I looked rather intimidating since he was now edging behind Twilight.
“C’mon, Spike,” said Twilight, “he won’t bite you”. I went around to Spike and gave him a pat on the head.
“I know I may look scary because I’m larger than you,” I said, in a soothing voice in order to comfort him, “but I’m actually a really nice guy”.
“Hehe, point taken,” agreed Spike, “I kinda had that same experience with Twilight when we first met”.
I finally stood up to my full height. “Well then,” I said, “now that introductions are out of the way, I’ve just got one more question”.
“Of course,” beamed Twilight, “ask away”.
I took a deep breath and spoke. “How am I gonna get back home again?”
Author's Note
Well, for my first attempt at a fanfic, it wasn’t too bad in my opinion. Leave your opinions in the comments below and give a like if you enjoyed it. I aim to have the second part of the episode out some time tomorrow.
