The pilot
Hey there, names Paul, I’m the main man in this little shindig I call my life story. Right, so to get a few things outta the way early, I’m blind. Have been for years. The accident that created my “disability” happened looooooong ago. I was seven, maybe eight when my parents told me we were going to a theme park. Everything was going great. we played I spy, laughed at silly stories, and just enjoyed the scenery passing by. As we were moving into the off ramp to a rest stop, the unthinkable happened. a tractor trailer one lane over from us blew a tire, sending it careening into the side of our car. Bits of truck and trailer flew everywhere. Only two people survived that day, the truck driver, and me. When the cars collided, it sent shrapnel through my window and into my face, slicing through both of my eyes and the bridge of my nose like paper. They said the only reason I survived was because the truck driver pulled me out of the wreckage and applied pressure to the gash on my face until the ambulance arrived. My full list of injury’s was a broken arm, a broken wrist, fractured collarbone, and of course the icing on the cake, blindness. The truck driver took full responsibility of me after the crash. He had no other family besides his parents, who graciously took me in and raised me until i was old enough to move out. They became my surrogate family in a way.
You may have noticed that I put disability in quotes. That’s because even though I cant see, I learned how to by using my feet and crazy good hearing. I once found a nest of hummingbirds just by following the er, humming, of their wings. One time I explained this to some of my classmates, as they always wondered why I didn’t wear shoes and wasn’t yelled at by the teacher because of it. After explaining it they told me I was just like a girl from some show called avatar, except I could swim and she couldn’t, also they said I was cooler, which really helps your self esteem. I’m also a really good spear-fisher. I can tap my feet and feel the disturbances in the water where the fish are swimming, my “vision” is just blurry, like when you open up your eyes underwater. Anyways I think that covers my backstory. I don’t think you need the details of how I learned this sense over the years. That’s a whole nother ball o wax for a different time. Let’s get right into how I got to equestria.
It was a day like any other days I suppose, I got up turned off my alarm and got ready for the day. I put on a pair of blue jeans with a red polo shirt (I know this because I use patterns of safety pins to tell the colors of my shirts apart) and began working. I live by myself and work as a typist, converting audio books into Braille. Not the most exciting job in the world, but you learn some interesting things when all you do is listen to books every day. I’m pushing 22 now, my surrogate family have all passed on, leaving me a nice little house in the suburbs. Anyways, i finish up converting this book that was requested fifty shades of grey. I’m never gonna get those scenes outta my head *shudder*. So i save my progress, shut down my laptop, and get ready to head out to the park nearby. I put on a pair of black shades to cover what’s left of my eyes, and head out. It’s a relatively large park, with a river fed lake, a large hiking trail with benches and grills scattered about and a roped off swimming area in the shallow end of the lake.
I sit down on the edge of the lake and dip my feet into the water. There’s a few schools of fish swimming about and a bird drifting lazily about on the surface. After laying back and enjoying the sun shining on my face, i get up and make my usual lazy circle around the lake. As I cross the bridge and pass by the hiking trail entrance a faint buzzing noise seems to come from the air all around me. I cant “see” anything. I get closer to investigate. That was my last memory on earth.
The next thing i remember was waking up in a bed, with voices all around me. My mouth was dry, and since my hands and feet seemed to be restrained off the bed i could not get a look at my potential kidnappers. Kinda felt like i was hog tied, hands and feet tied together, all caught up in one length of rope. “Ah don’t know what this thing is twi, but appeared at th’ edge o’ sweet apple acres this mornin, and since you is the leading expert on weird critters, ‘cept fear fluttershy, who fainted when she saw it. Dragged him all th was here hoping yew might know what t’ do”.
weIl, that explains why my back hurts. Doesn’t explain who these people are though, quite an odd name, fluttershy.
“Well applejack,” annnd another odd name “I don’t really know what it is, SPIKE!!!” I heard someone running up towards the voice that yelled.
“yea Twilight?” “Fetch me the mythical plants and creatures book please”
“erm, the one Lyra always checks out?” I heard a long sigh coming from “twi”.
“Yes Spike, that one”
“sure thing twi!” Heh, sounded like there should’ve been a salute when the guy talked.
“Here ya go twi”
“thank you spike. Now lets see here, biped, hairless except for patch on head, omnivorous if the teeth are anything to go by annnd......” hold on, she’s describing ME. So if she doesn’t know what i am, that means she can’t be a human so that means... “spike send a letter to princess Celestia, red paper. There’s a human in our midst” definitely not in Kansas anymore.
