Chapters Immortal Rose's Journal
Oh, that my methods have been reduced to this! I, from a lineage of intelligence far above that of the common mare having to resort to keeping journals for the telling of these events. Be it not enough that I already keep the records of my research with the creatures of this land and the vast knowledge produced from such? Yet I fear that if I do not recount these tales in as much detail as my mind allows, I may well believe myself mad or at the very least to have suffered some wild hallucination or dream of the most vivid and horrible nature. That should give you some small inclination as to how very unusual life within these walls is, if it can be so aptly termed.
Ah, but what good shall it do me to complain here? No, I shall save those rants for such time as I find them necessary, or even more so, crucial to making my point. Before I begin, let me make a few things known to you, gentle reader.
First and foremost, I am not accustomed to writing as one would do in a normal journal. My preferred method of keeping records is either by short hand in field journals, in notes that I have written to myself or by simply recalling facts that I have stored in the nearly limitless container that is the mind. Thus, I humbly ask that you be patient with me while I am learning.
Second is of course the method in which I shall keep the time. Unlike the realm you, gentle reader, know and inhabit; my home at this time has no sun to signal the close of night and the dawn of a new day. Even the clocks we keep here are superfluous at best. Merely kept as decoration for reminders of a past forever gone...
Forgive me, I fear I have lost my train of thought. Now, where was I? Ah, yes.
As such, I will not time my entries as one normally would. However, I shall keep with the moon in this land of perpetual night. It's phases still coincide with those of the moon in the mortal realm. The only difference being it's color.
Indeed, I can see it even now as I write from my laboratory. I reside within the turret of a large castle and as such, have been given the liberties to redecorate it as I please. I have equipped this room with all that I shall require in my studies. A metal slab in the center of the circular floor for experimentation, shelves lined with countless volumes of books from the ancient yellow-papered tomes to the more recent leather bound field journals of those very much like myself. I also have cabinets containing my formulas, potions, and the alchemical ingredients needed for each. As for creature comforts? Few can be found here. Simply a desk and chair equipped with materials for writing as well as a stove, kettle, and cup for when a small bit of tea will steady my nerves. I have no use for a bed, nor do I wish one. I fear sleep in this place and will not invite it with such furnishings. How can I best term it?
'If I sleep it may not be sleep, bringing dreams that may not be dreams.'
I'm afraid time does not permit any more of a first entry than this, for I am being summoned. I shall resume my work here when I return, for what better place to start than the beginning? Until then, I must depart.
Entry 1: Gibbous Waxing
Perhaps I should have taken better account as to the nature of my work, and acquired a bed after all. I am weary with the efforts of my tasks and my muscles plead for a moment's rest. I'm afraid I cannot answer their cry save for when I am seated here and writing.
Now then, when I first began this infernal process of putting pen to paper, I was just about to give the reader of these pages some details as to the background of my person. Let me begin therefore with my name. I am Rose. Please forgive the exclusion of my full name. It has been lost in the annals of time and I fear that before long the remainder will be all but wiped from my memory. I was, in a former life, a youth of many talents, yet poor in the standards of health. I could not venture to play with others due to a strange illness that left me frail and prone to anemia. I spent most of my days bed-ridden, reading whatever texts I could get my hooves on. I began to thirst for knowledge which was noted by my parents. Henceforth, I was raised by my father to be a pony of much learning and great intelligence. This proved well for me in many aspects, as I rapidly grew in my wisdom, reading many books as a filly that would be much too difficult for the average pony to grasp. However, I would never follow in the pious steps of my father as a pony of science. My studies led me from the well accepted facts of science and the nature of the mortal world and into the dark realm of the occult and supernatural. I learned of legends, myths, gods and goddesses, creatures and the demonic pacts of supernatural entities. Needless to say, I was disowned immediately upon my parent's discovery of these things. However, that did not bother me in the slightest. Upon my examinations of ancient texts and forbidden formulae, I had inadvertently discovered wild flora, a rose that would hold the key to curing my illness and possibly give me something more. Eternal life, the pinnacle, the very goal that mortals have striven towards for centuries. Yet as with anything so powerful, there comes a great price. I searched for this, and found it. Unleashing such power in a mortal realm was my greatest mistake. The energy called to demons as though I had lit a beacon. I was nearly consumed as they attempted to draw the energy from within me to use as their own....
I must apologize yet again. The experience was such that I do not wish to think on it. Let it suffice to say that I was spared by the very entity I serve now and that I awoke with this mark that now rests upon my flank. The very flower which I had saught, and found. The rose whose power drew me into this realm of the damned. For what purpose was I spared? That remains still a mystery. Apparently there is something about me, some strange and rare quality that is hard to come by even within these realms inhabited by demons and other horrid creatures that were thought only to exist in the wild imaginations and fears of others. Unfortunately, this is not the case. I am only now beginning to discover the truth of these creatures. Ah, but I am getting off track here. The stallion that saved me was impressed by my research, and also that there was a means of immortality beyond his own. This pony, I came to know as Ancient Blood. A powerful unicorn Lord in this nightmarish realm. He claims to have some use for me, as I am now in his employment. As for how long this shall last? I know not. I shudder to think what sort of fate befalls one who is no longer of use to such a being. What I do know however, is that I have achieved a power, a talent for immortality similar to these creatures of the night, yet I am not one of them. As for what I left behind? I only have this to say.
Let the pages of these journals only detail my account of the events in this realm. My past is simply that. The past. It holds no place here. My life, my family, all is at an end and I must start anew with what I have here.
Ah, the master calls. I shall return when I can to detail how I arrived at this odd castle and who else resides within it's walls. Though with the frequency of His summons, I wonder if I will ever finish.

The Room of Blood Crystals, and Ancient Blood's Anger
Immortal Rose's Journal
What an odd time I have had! The master of this castle summoned me to a very unusual room. I doubt I could forget the place even if I tried, however I shall not trust my memory alone with it. This castle is very strange indeed, and I fear it may warp my mind to it's own twisted ways in time. Thus, I shall strike while the iron is hot and the scene is still fresh in my mind.
Ancient Blood led me through a maze of staircases, not once pausing to answer my inquiries as to where we may be going. This castle must be very old, and the decor is most unusual. All is either crimson, black iron, stone, or some combination of the three. I must remember to look through the castle's library later to learn more of it's extensive history. In any case, we entered many rooms and moved through more doorways and staircases than I care to remember at this time. Yet, I could not help but imagine this was all intentional. Each new passageway we turned down seemed to have been set into layout with the exclusive intent to make sure one was positively lost before coming to an end. Yet, at the end we were. He turned to me, a stern glare of warning on his face as he simply hissed these words.
"You shall tell not a soul, nor dare enter here again without my permission."
Needless to say, by this point I was extremely curious as to what I would see. What secrets could possibly lay hidden behind the heavy door we stood by now? Ancient Blood produced a key from his person. A large, gaudy thing with what appeared to be an engraving of a flower at the top. He unlocked the door and put the key back to his pocket before swinging the door open. This would have been an impossible feat for a mere mortal, for as we entered I took the liberty to examine the door. It was a thick stone slab, almost having the same width as the average colt. As for the room itself, it took some time for my eyes to adjust to the darkness. Soon enough however, I was able to make out the appearance of crystals. Literally millions of them! They were everywhere in the round chamber. Each and every possible surface was lined with them and even the very ground had a large ring of the ruddy gems. I stepped carefully, not wishing to tread on these as they were producing a pulsing scarlet glow about the room. At the center of this chamber was a similar crystal, but massive! It must have been as tall as the master of this castle, for he is a rather tall unicorn, and suspended in the air by nothing. It was hovering in the air, pulsing as the smaller jewels resonated with it. That it floated at all was astonishing enough, however it was above a red pool. Upon closer examination, I was utterly appalled to find that this was a large pool of blood! And by this, a stone altar! I was much reminded of the sacrificial chambers of the occult books I have studied and wondered with an ever increasing sense of dread if I may not have been led here as an attempted sacrifice to an unknown deity.
As I sit here safely in my room however, I see the folly in my logic. What demonic force could be more terrible than the one I serve?
Now, I inquired of my Lord once more as to our purpose there within the bloody chamber. I will not be able to account verbatim what he spoke, as it recalled much and terrified me even more. However, I shall attempt what I am able.
"The room in which we stand has been here since before my kingdom's creation, and shall remain for all eternity. The pool which lies before you holds the lifeblood of every king to ever sit upon the throne of this land. Each and every consecutive leader and as such, all of the power of the realm. That power is passed on to each through this."
Here, he gestured to a pendant that hung around his neck, an intricate cross composed of roses and thorns.
"Every king in this realm has worn this, be it won from succession or from victory in battle. The blood gives it's power, the castle it's domain to the wearer. As for the crystals you see in this very room, they hold within their pulsing forms the lives of all who have stepped foot on this land. To shatter even one would be to execute the life and sever the link to the soul of the being it belongs to."
These words made me grow pale and even more cautious as I maneuvered away from the gems.
"You are a mare of science, are you not? You who has discovered the legendary rose of immortality and has taken it's power unto yourself. Why then fear for the lives of mere mortals?'
His question was unanswerable, so I posed one of my own.
"P-power? I offer my humblest pardons, my lord, however there was no power within that flower which would be of any use to me. Before you had arrived at the scene, the unholy flora nearly took my own life. If there
was a power, it was not a blessed one."
I now regret those words.
Upon my sheer uttereance of this observation, an aura of malignant energy pervaded the room, all but snufffing out the very little light it had afforded. Ancient Blood loomed over me, his eyes glowing nearly as brightly as the crystals had only moments earlier. I cowered from his stature, immediately taking up a posturing of sumbission. Yet this was not enough. In an instant, he was near upon me, leering down with a fanged snarl.
"How dare you defy me and insult the very thing which my kingdom holds sacred! If not for the power of the rose, those demonic energies would have ripped your very soul from it's cage of mangled flesh and done far worse with it. The rose of immortality spared you, child, and fused to your very existence. Like it or not, you ARE that flower now. You are The Immortal Rose. The proof is clearly visible to any and all who gaze upon your flank!"
Here he pressed his hoof against the mark which forthright seemed to scorch against my flesh, causing a great burning pain to seer across the entire area. I do not question that I would have fainted from the agony if not that his eyes firmly held my gaze. Be it a moment later or hours I cannot recall, yet he removed his hoove, moving to the stone altar to retrieve an old and rusted dagger.
"If you do not wish such an honor I can very well remove the mark here and now, and with it, give your blood a place within the pool."
The magic of his horn held the dagger aloft, ready to plunge it down in an instant while my voice still failed me. Yet his anger had subsided for the moment, and he let the dagger fall to the ground. Ancient Blood made his way once more to the altar as I still trembled. He took an empty goblet from on top and filled it with the aged blood.
"Examine this blood, it's relations with the crystals, this land, everything. If there is more power to unlock from this, do so at once. You have seen my home. My land is desolate and the moon is as blood. With your help, I shall restore it to it's former glory. A paradise of night. We must set things right immediately from your folly!"
My folly....
Even now as I sit in my laboratory, I am puzzled beyond measure. So it was by my own hand that I have subjected myself to such a fate. The goblet of blood still sits at my desk and I have yet to begin my work on the subject. I do hope that a trip to the library at this point will provide further enlightenment as to my task. But first, some tea. I still tremble with the recent events and the imagery of that terrible lord and master. Since rest and sleep is futile, tea will have to be my final resort for soothing.
Immortal Rose's Journal
Entry 3: Full moon
My trip to the library proved to be well worth the effort as I have returned with a wealth of knowledge. What an extraordinary history lies hidden here! The library itself is a vast room with a vaulted ceiling, and the shelves of books are seemingly endless. Indeed, if the library of my youth in Canterlot seemed as a holy sanctuary to me, then this can only be hailed as paradise itself! I spent quite a bit of time researching there, for when I paused to gaze out the closest window, the phase of the moon had completed itself. I hastened back here to my laboratory to detail what I have learned.
As far as former rulers go, there are few of which to speak. While in any other society this would be considered odd, I must constantly remind myself that I am no longer in a land of mortals where only the two Princesses seemed out of time's reach. Vampiric entities are not subject to age and the decay of faculties that comes with it. Thus, I should not be surprised. However what does come as surprise to me is the discovery of legends in this dark realm. Who could have guessed that these creatures of myth would also have their own myths as well? I will take the time to note one here that is of particular interest, as it holds the same flower that has become my namesake and may very well help me discover what strange powers lie dormant within myself. It is referred to as the 'Legend of the Immortal Rose'.
"~In the days when the worlds were still young, there was a beautiful realm of magical night. A sacred place abundant in clear waters, lush fields and majestic forests. In the midst of one such forest was a clearing where fragrant roses bloomed the color of the pale moonlight. As the years passed and the realm grew prosperous it was noticed that one rose never faded or withered like the others. This came to be known as the immortal rose, or Rosencroix. The vampiric race took a particular interest in this rose and built their kingdom around it. Rosencroix Kingdom became a place synonymous with beauty, elegance, and immortality. This lasted for several centuries until a strange and powerful ruler took the throne. Unlike the past kings and queens, he was cold and cruel. He ruled his kingdom with an iron hoof, silencing any who dared oppose him. His name was Nicolae. Under Nicolae, a reign of terror swept the land. The cries of the dead rode on the wind and the waters ran red. Nothing could sate his thirst for blood or his lust for absolute power. Nearby villages were burned to the ground to increase his kingdom and the villagers forced to serve his every whim. His castle walls were built with their bodies, strengthened with their bones and blood. In the end, Nicolae still wasn't satisfied.
One evening he wandered through the castle pondering as to what more could give him power and satisfaction when he saw a pale figure in the castle's gardens. Intrigued, Nicolae approached closer. The figure was that of a beautiful mare with a coat of purest white, standing amongst the roses. Immediately, a strong thirst overwhelmed him as he watched her. Her beating heart resounded through his head and he could smell the fragrant blood that rushed through her veins. Resisting was futile. Instantly, he grabbed her and fed. The mare's blood flowed through him, but instead of renewing his power and satisfying his thirst, Nicolae began to grow weak. He let go and stumbled back, his eyes wide in confusion. The mare's white coat was soaked in her blood turning her whole countenance crimson. Slowly, her form vanished to reveal the immortal rose, Rosencroix dyed red. Nicolae had fed off the spirit of the immortal rose. Overhead the moon bled crimson until the entire surface was blood. It's cursed light shone down on the land causing it to wither and die and the waters to become blood. As he looked on, the immortal rose turned to stone. The land was cursed. The blood that Nicolae drank weakened him further until he turned to stone as well, but even this was not enough. The deed had been done and it was too late. Forever must the immortal rose be stone, and forever must the moon proclaim the tale in blood.~"
So this is the power that the master spoke of. How unusual. Such a bloody past this land has. I must remember to ask more on this, though I must say that the thought of sitting here writing amidst bones and blood is quite unsettling, and I am much exhausted from the efforts I have spent thus far. I would take rest here, however the events of late are still fresh, and the lord's face still etched into my mind's eye. I fear this room may not be fully my own. I shall seek another area for brief repose and bring this journal with me. I am much too tired to deal with another threat at this time and I would not likely take it as kindly as I have done to this point. Hmm...Thoughts of violence. Perhaps this place is already beginning to tell on me. I fear I may soon lose the last of whatever humanity remains in these bones of mine. But that is enough for now. I must hurry to find a suitable location before my mind succumbs fully to sleep.

I'm afraid sleep will not come any longer to me, and for good reason. Let me write of things while they are still fresh and the images clear.
I had found a small garden outside of the large yet remaining within it's shadow, and a marble bench within it's confines. This seemed a suitable place at the time and most welcoming with it's strange blossoms. I am beginning to better notice the rose theme as these were the flowers of choice here, yet each a bloody hue that is not common elsewhere save for the flower I had discovered within the Everfree. I wondered in passing if I had stumbled upon the same garden of the legend I had been reading, but did not care to dwell on the subject. Sleep came fast and I could no longer fight against it's unrelenting power. Hence, I crossed to the bench, lay my journal down and dozed. For how long I slept I remain uncertain, for I was woken quite suddenly by a low flying bat who had seen fit to perch on my head. The strange creature gave a pitiful squeak as I rose and made a grab for it. The bat evaded my grasp and flew to land on a statue which I had hereto not noticed. I removed the sleep from my eyes and went to better examine the stone.
What an appalling sight met my eyes! The statue depicted a tall stallion in formal trappings with quite a long mane. However his eyes were wide in horror and front hooves raised towards the heavens. On his face was a fanged snarl twisted into a look of defiance and rage. The look was so startling and gruesome in it's familiarity that I rushed promptly back to the library, remembering where I had seen it previously. Indeed! I did not err! This is no mere legend, but truth. The statue most accurately depicts the late Lord Nicolae of the kingdom. How wondrous! I shall remember hence forth to treat the events of the past justly and not give them over to mere mares' tales. Though it does make me wonder. I know now from a mortal standpoint that the rumors and stories of vampiric species that I once deemed as folly to be true, so what else then could exist here in this land of night?
Ah, enough of this! There is work to be done!
The Goblet, and the Visitor

Entry 4: Full moon
Returning to my chambers, I was relieved to find that all was as I had left it when I had ventured out into the gardens. The goblet remained where it had stood upon my desk, nearly glowing with an ominous green light. I could have very well believed this to be the very light given off by the ferryman's lantern when he sailed the shores of the river Styx if there had not been a lit candle standing nearly. I shall therefore chose that explanation above any other that may exist, though I have my doubts even now. I am not certain if it was these lingering fears, involuntary action on my own part, or if some unseen power did indeed emit from the cup, however I took the utmost care in giving the object a wide margin of space as I continued to put ink to parchment. A few borrowed texts from the library sat upon my desk as well and offered much aid in detailing a past and present comparison of the land and the areas affected by the rose's death. It would seem that no aspect had been spared by the curse's wrath save for that very small garden. The crimson moon above shines upon an otherwise veritable wasteland. Any trees visible are dead masses of branches and roots. They search desparately for water yet if any is found, it is undrinkable; the color and consistency of the blood that still remains in that accursed goblet. It makes me very curious indeed, especially since I have had no trouble acquiring what appears to be very clean, clear water for my tea...
Perhaps I should think twice before fixing a second cup.
Continuing my research, I then focused my attention on the blood in the ancient goblet. What I find is unlike normal blood taken from a medical standpoint. Then again, I must constantly remind myself that I am no longer within a normal realm. What is unusual to me here may very well be accepted as fact to others who reside in this place.
The blood was as though freshly spilled. Liquid in it's consistency and a ruddy, bright color. Normally the platelets in the blood would have begun the process of coagulation and have hardened when exposed to air, forming a protective shell or scab. This goblet of blood has stood at my desk since my visit to that horrible crystal room and within that dreadful pool for who knows how much longer than that, yet still it has not dried up in the slightest. Not even a hint of gelatinous substance or clotting! This leads me to wonder if the platelets have been alltogether removed, or if some strange genetic make up resides within the blood's plasma.
Hmm... perhaps all dead blood behaves in this manner. I would very well inquire to my lord of this, yet I highly doubt that he would willingly produce his own blood for a proper comparison. No, he may well take mine for such a foolish request. I shall pause here to allow my fears to pass, and to steady my hoof from it's trembling.

Perhaps not quite a pause. There is a fluttering sound near my window, and a squeaking visitor requesting my attention.

The strange night only grows longer and far stranger with every passing moment of time. The fluttering sounds I had heard from outside of my window proved to belong to a small bat attempting to perch itself upon the stony sill. It squeaked loudly with each failed endeavor, having difficulties in balancing upon the precarious ledge. My opening of the window latch startled the poor creature whom lost what little balance it had gained and fell back on the floor of my chambers. I attempted to console the pitiful ball of fur, yet my close presence only served to frighten it further until it saw fit to find solace perched upon a skull that I had been using as a makeshift bookend in a far corner of the room. It remains there even now, watching my writing with a wide=eyed curiosity. It is a strange little bat, grey in it's coloring in place of the usual brown or black that is more commonly seen. Little tufts of fur upon it's head could very well suffice for a styling of hair, however the oddity of the being is more unusual that even these. There is a strange marking beneath the left eye of the creature, the shape of a diamond with small swirling patterns tappering off to the sides. I have yet to see such a symbol naturally occuring in the bats of the wild which leads me to question whether or not the animal is tame. If so, where might the owner reside? Seeing however that an attempt to move or further approach the bat would be a wasted effort, I shall leave it be as a welcome guest for the present and return to my studies. This may prove difficult in itslef, however.... My constant interruptions are waxing heavily on my mind, and I cannot hold sleep off much longer. Perhaps if I rest my eyes for only a moment...

Immortal Rose's Journal
Forgive me, I must have dozed off slightly, for I awoke to a large crash at my chamber doors, and the sounds of the small bat fluttering about the room. I tried to lift my head, and found it quite a difficult task to do. It felt heavy, as did my eyelids. Still, they had no choice but to open as Ancient Blood stormed into the room with a look of urgency. Immediately I offered a humble bow, moving back to allow him further entrance into the room. His sharp eyes appraised the surroundings as though searching for some object or entity that my mortal eyes could not glimpse. Finally, he alighted upon the goblet at my desk, completely ignoring the frantic bat still scrambling about the area. I shall never forget the expression of his visage then, as he studied the chalice. His color became a cadavorous palour, and his eyes widened into some inconceivable look of absolute horror. The lord stood there for some time, frozen to the spot. After a few minutes of this, I attempted to speak with him. Before I could utter a single syllable, he stood right before me. Such a quick, nearly instantaneous movement that I was not certain he had moved at all, yet his hoof caught my throat, pinning me in a manner where my eyes could do not but meet his piercing gaze. Captive to this sharp and soul searching stare, any words that still lingered in my throat died away as he spoke. Each word sharp, carefully measured.
"Did you attempt to sleep within this room? Did you close your eyes even for a brief period of rest? Answer me truthfully in this, or your words may very well be your last."
I froze, confused by the strange inquiry. Was I to be denied the basic mortal need of sleep? Nonetheless, his eyes alone prompted me to answer.
"Y-Yes, my Lord."
He removed his grip, turning away to mutter a string on unintelligeable words and stare at the goblet. I too turned my attention to the object and was shocked by a change that had come over it. Instead of the crimson gems that had adorned the outside of the goblet when I had last beheld it, there were now a row of bright green emeralds that seemed to glow with an otherworldly light. My study of the goblet was ended abruptly as the lord lifted it from it's place and started out the door. He paused upon the threshold, glancing back at me to deliver a final word of warning.
"Do not let your eyes close again with sleep while you are within this room, nay, within this very castle. I cannot guarantee your safety should it happen again. If you must heed the mortal call to slumber, seek me in my chambers immediately. It is only under my watch that I can assure you safety in repose. Until that time, return to your work!"
The door slammed shut behind him, the sound echoing into the stony halls outside. It may very well have been my imagination, or a misplaced hope of some kindness within my lord; yet I thought that within his eyes was a hint, a small glimmer of concern as he had spoke those final words of parting. I do not have time to think on this further. Again, to work!

Entry...forgive me. My mind is numb with the want of sleep, and I cannot recall my previous entries.
After this castle's Lord had left my chambers, the rapid beating of my heart prompted an immediate rush of adrenaline to my system. With that, I had hoped to stave off any form of rest or repose for a long period of time. Yet now the fear and accompanying adrenaline has all but left my system and my eyes once more yearn to submit to sleep's call. Any research or study at this point would prove to be entirely in vain. Ancient Blood has removed the strange goblet from my room, and the text of ancient tomes dance wildly before my eyes. They blur and shift position as I struggle to focus upon them as well as the sentences they form. It is only by the lingering fear produced by the lord's warning that I am able to keep writing. Even the little bat who had been so frightened earlier is dozing carelessly upon it's perch. I very much envy it at this point, wishing I may follow suit and find solace in ignorant slumber. Perhaps I should endeavor it once more. After all, the danger has passed, has it not?
No... I cannot take chances in such a strange place. To do so may be to risk my very life or more. Still, whatever safety was promised in his presence....do I dare intrude with such a poor excuse? He may very well think me to be weak, to be...
...I am mortal.
If I am wrong for being such, there is nothing I can do to change it. Morpheus will not be denied it seems. He beckons me sleep whether it is a welcome entreaty or not.
I must seek the Lord, and urgently.

Ancient Blood's Vigilance, and the Tyrant's Return
Ancient Blood's Musings
All remains still within these ancient halls of stone. Not a single sound save for the echo of time as it continues on it's path. The ceaseless march forward to the inevitable.
How long has it been, how much of that time has passed since I had last saw fit to put ink to parchment and pen the thoughts and events within my home? And yet, I find myself doing so once again. Perhaps it was the sight of her's that has prompted me to once again adopt a similar means of kept record. Be that as it may, the question remains as to 'what'. The thoughts within my mind are limitless, where parchment and ink have their limits. Perhaps the best course would be to focus on the present and leave the past for another time.
I shall begin.
Not an hour has passed since I have left the chambers of the Rose, the ancient goblet at my side. I had feared such an occurrence may very well take place, abd the act itself has only further proven my theories. The dormant state of the chalice has ended, the emerald hue of the once scarlet gems is enough proof. Yet I cannot but ponder the means of awakening. How is it that she has been victorious in this without a conscious thought or effort, where I have failed for centuries. I, who have devoted the remainder of my very existence to the unraveling of this curse. Shall I be bested by a mere mortal? The very thought is nonsense.
Still, be I loathe to admit it, the change in the atmosphere is most welcoming. For too long I have been surrounded by not but death and the ever present darkness that has become second nature. She has brought light with her, or perhaps some semblance of it to my solitary confinement. I may be ruler here, Lord of this Kingdom, yet I too am a prisoner sentenced to remain within it's crypt-like walls. This tomb which so boldly masquerades itself as a castle. A vault for the dead.
My sorrows seem to have consumed me for a moment, and I must awaken from my reverie. There is a knocking at my door and a gentle presence on the other side.

I cannot say that I was surprised to find Miss Rose as my visitor. Her aura is nearly as gentle in it's nature as her footfalls upon the stone hallway. I bade her enter into my chambers, and she acquiesced with a humble if not frightened bow. It is quite evident that she fears me, and duly so. Yet if she only knew what fate would have awaited had I not intervened earlier, I am certain she would grovel at my hooves.
Before she spoke, I knew what it was that had prompted her to seek me. The answer was clearly seen upon her features. Sleep is a merciless entity to mortal kind, forcing obedience to it's whims on a daily basis. She could scarce keep her gaze upon me, and the faculties of her mind were dull with the apparent lack of energy. Still, she was very polite in her speech. She pleaded for a moment's reprieve as well as the chance to rest upon the chamber's floor. Words were not necessary, as I gestured to a lounging sofa nearby. A slight relaxation in her posture and a look of relief within her eyes. She bowed once again, thanking me and promising that it was only a moment or two needed to recover her energy. I assured her safety in repose, taking my leave to continue my writing. The sofa is close at hoof, and I am keeping a vigilant watch even now as I write. She slipped deep into slumber nearly the instant she had closed her eyes. I doubt dreams shall hinder her rest, as she is quite still. Only the faint rising and falling of her chest, and the subtle rhythm of her heartbeat give the indication that she still lives. And yet, dreams may still occur. I wonder...what is it to dream? What flights of fancy is the mortal mind capable of? For one who has not closed his eyes in sleep for so long, not requiring nor desiring such....is it still possible?
I shall let these questions pass unanswered for the moment, and continue my watch.

Perhaps more time has passed than I first thought. If only the events that have just recently taken place were but a dream.
Yet I wish this in folly.
As my watch into the grim and abysmal night continued, I fear that once again I had slipped deep into my own mind. My inner thoughts were such that it was not until too late that I had become aware of a faint, pulsing light emanating from that accursed goblet. I rose from my seat in alam moving closer to better examine the strange phenomenon. And what should await me in this? What horror and utter repulsion! The blood from within the cup grew old and rotted before mine eyes, the chalice shuddering as though the table beneath were collapsing in upon itself. With many a clanging and loud crash, the goblet fell from it's precarious perch, spilling the contents upon the floor. The ground beneath trembled as ripples broke out on the surface of the dead blood. Slowly a crimson soaked hoof stretched forth out of the crimson liquid, sharply digging into the side. Following it, a stallion's body emerged from the scarlet pool covered from head to toe with the ancient lifeblood. I stepped away cautiously, keeping an eye upon the still sleeping figure of the nearby. In passing, I ponder how it is she slept on during such a commotion. Her weariness must be greeat indeed, for with the occurrence now in the past, she has not awoken once.
Ah, back to my thoughts...
With difficulty the figure stood, a deep cry echoing from the depths that could very well have been mistaken for the victory call of Death himself as two golden eyes snapped open. I know well of the legends, and I knew in the instant I beheld those eyes, who it was that stood before me. Nicolae. As the stallion observed me, a sinister grin swept over his countenance. I made no move to continue backwards, yet stood my ground in the face of his horrible appearance. The sudden silence that hung between us did not help matters, so I took the chance to speak.
"So, you have returned once again, Nicolae....but how is this? The curse still remains intact, and the statue is in the gardens even at this very moment."
A chuckle rumbled low within his throat as he responded.
"An odd greeting for thine own flesh and blood, mine brother. How long hast thou ruled mine kingdom? How many cycles hast the crimson moon showed to this land since our parting? Yet thine first words are of questioning? Ah, it has been too long."
I shuddered at his speech, glaring at the terms of endearment.
"You have sentenced my land to desolation, cursing the foundations and the crystals. Yet you wish for fond greetings? I do not consider you my kin."
With these words, I readily expected anger on his behalf. Yet all that was recieved was laughter.
"Curse, dear brother? Nay, twas not my hoof that condemned this land. If ye seek the being responsible, ye need look no further than to the reclining mare at your side."
He gestured to miss Rose, grinning with what I gather was malicious intent. I made a deliberate move to stand in front of her, shielding her from his sight. This act served only to further amuse him, as he returned his eyes to mine.
"So, thou hast switched thine loyalties then? Thy decision is one of haste. Yet ye need not choose so swiftly. I give thee leniency and a chance to change thine clouded mind. Spill the maiden's blood within the garden of old. If the results are as I predict, ye shall see the folly of thine ways, and rule this land of night at mine side. Until that time, brother..."
He made a bow, shadows consuming him to leave no trace.
With this, I hastily summoned the guards, barring and latching all doors and windows until they arrive. None shall leave nor enter without mine permission. As I wait, I pen these words. The goblet has disappeared, and the Rose slumbers still.
Yes, if only it were all a dream...

Immortal Rose's Journal
For how long I had dozed in the Lord's chambers, I am uncertain. Yet I awoke to his voice, urgently instructing others who had entered the room. He spoke in earnest, giving commands in a tone that left no room for argument. I remained silent upon the sofa as they bowed humbly and exited to fulfill their tasks. Seeing his will done, Ancient Blood turned, his eyes finding mine. I quickly rose from my place of rest to offer a bow and a stammered apology for my mortal need of rest. He seemed lost in his thoughts, for I still doubt if he heard me. His gaze seemed far, and his mind preoccupied with things I could only fathom to guess. After a few minutes of a most awkward silence, he shook his head and came back to the present, speaking.
"Forgive me, Miss Rose. I had offered you safety in repose, yet let my guard slip and fall into my own musings. I shall speak briefly, and inform you of the current situation. I trust you have seen the guards' depart, as well as heard some, if not all, of my instructions to them?"
I nodded, and he continued.
"Look then, if you will, about the whole of these chambers. The goblet is gone, and with it, a very old and malignant spirit."
I knew in that instant that he spoke of Nicolae.
I must have faltered in this realization and what it could mean to have alerted such security measures, for the Lord's visage became quite intent upon my own. He commanded that I sit, and I did so, taking deep breaths to calm myself as he once more continued.
"Where the spirit has gone, and what purpose it bears in mind, I cannot rightfully say. Yet believe me when I tell you that you are in grave danger here. Nicolae seeks vengeance upon the rose after all these years. If all goes as he wishes, you will die."
It has occurred to me here that I have yet to make a detailed description as to Ancient Blood's features. His coat is of a deep crimson, as his name readily implies. The mane and tail are of dark contrast, black as ink upon the pages of this parchment. His two singular marks that strike me are as follows: The image of a blood crystal upon his flank, swarmed by thorny vines; and the two deep-set eyes, the color of freshly spilled lifeblood. These two, the pair of orbs that readily see into the very heart and soul are always serious, however never as much as when he spoke these words to me.
All was black before I hit the stone floor below.

Immortal Rose's Journal
Once more I am among familiar surroundings. A room designated as mine, yet not. Still, I find comfort to be back within these walls. Measures have been taken to place blankets and a small bed close to my writing desk. Apparently the addition of security outside the wooden door has left peaceful repose an attainable possibility. I am grateful for it, yet it is unlikely that I will allow another lapse into the blissfully ignorant world of the dreamer.
There is a sharp, stinging sensation upon my head, but I welcome it as a means to keep alert. I cannot help but smile, even in such uncertain and dangerous times. The small bat of earlier has become bolder in my absence, going so far as to alight upon my shoulder with a seemingly concerned nuzzle. It gave me a measure of ease, that such a small bat would become brave if only for a moment to console me in a most fearful time.
I took a moment to glance up from my writings as a knock resounded at the door. One of the guards entered, setting a small cup of hot tea by my side. My expression must have been quizzical, for he made a bow, offering an explanation.
"Apothecarium's orders. He is the physician here. He asks that you drink it, and try to rest. There is a small amount of medicinal herbs mixed into it."
I frowned, not recalling having met many of the others whom supposedly reside within these walls, and most certainly not a doctor. Still, I thanked the guard kindly for his gesture, and he withdrew from the chamber. The tea and medicine mixture still waits, cooling upon my desk. I can smell chamomile, honey even. Yet there is an unfamiliar scent hidden within those comforting aromas. One that I am wary to discover.
Ah, my head still pains me with a mysterious throbbing. Perhaps just a small sip or two will relieve it...

Have I slept? It must be so! I pray, beg that it is so, for what I have seen! Such horrors must be barred, forever shackled to the bonds of imagination. They cannot belong to the realm of the concious mind.
That accursed tea! That accursed physician!
If not for that....I...I....I cannot continue in this vein. The shrill screeching of the bat, the shards of glass that litter the floor. All signs that not even a foal could rightly ignore.
If I am to pen the occurrence, I must do so swiftly. The sound of the guards is close at hand, and the Lord surely follows after.

For how long I had dozed, I still cannot recall, yet I felt more that saw the shadow that hovered in the window, blocking out the moon's light. My eyes felt heavy, even now they still retain such heaviness. Yet as I carefully took in the sight of that silhouette, my body reacted, leaping up and fleeing for the door at the opposite side.
I had no chance of making it.
In an instant he was there, barring my path. I stumbled backwards, a single word escaping my otherwise dry throat.
"Nicolae."
My recognition seemed to have pleased him, for a wide grin appeared on his countenance. Sharp, and fanged. It crept, writhing like a serpent over his features, even into the depths of his golden eyes.
They pulsed, and I was frozen.
No matter how I tried, it was impossible to move, to look away. He kept his unblinking gaze, voice resonating in a deep, commanding tenor.
"That thou knowest me only offers further proof. Truly, thou art she. Rose of Immortality, and reincarnation of mine enemy."
The accusation sank low, a hiss to stab at my heart. To say that I attempted to move, to blink is not enough. I plead with myself, to blink, to even raise a single hoof in defense. Even my voice failed me in that moment as he stepped closer.
"How long hast it been? Yet thou remainest still in youth, in splendor. Thine beauty is the same as that night so very long ago, and I am but a mere specter in comparison. Thine curse hath made me weak, mine powers dwindling even now."
Dwindling? Yet he held me captive without effort!
He continued, almost as though my thoughts were visible and easily read.
"Ah, thou art correct in thine assumptions. Mine true powers extend farther than even this, and I shall have it again. Yea, the remedy is close at hoof."
He stepped forward once more, maybe two inches away. The breath of his lungs was ice as he spoke.
"Dost thou come to the realization only now? I am here, as real as thine chamber stands about us. Mine existence in this realm is as solid as thine own."
He maneuvered away from my frozen gaze until I could no longer see him. Still, the cold of his breath lingered in the air close by, drifting about to chill my throat as he continued a dark soliloquy.
"And it shall be even more so. The blood is the life, is it not? Thus thine blood, thine life so close at hoof and so easily snatched away, shall restore me to the fullest..."
I faltered, scrambled to plead my voice back into existence. The urgency to alert the guards. They were just outside the door. Could they not hear his threats?
A deep laugh as he once more read my mind.
"They will not come, nor shalt thou be spared once again by meddlesome company. Tis the very same as our first encounter in the ancient gardens. Doest thou remember that night? So it shalt be once again. Yet this time, thine blood will serve MY purpose."
I felt the ice upon my throat, the sharp fangs graze my flesh.
And then, the sound of a large crash and the shattering on glass.

Curse and a Willing Sacrifice

What I saw then couldn't have been reality. Only a dream could make such pieces of glass rise up in a whirlwind about us. As if the very sharp edges were leaves stirred by the winds of late autumn, they ensnared us in their wicked trap, the scenery around changing shape until no longer was I in that room. The red-tinted darkness of the cursed night had grown brighter, and the view before me was as though a new land entirely. The moon above shone down with the purest white upon a whole and pure garden. The flowers were full of white blossoms to echo the celestial orb, and the whole of the ground was lush, soft grass. Still the glass whipped about, as I saw what could only have been a young Nicolae, a scene from the past as he thrashed about and stamped his hooves in fury.
"Watch", the voice at my throat intoned. "See what has been our past! Thine curse upon me, upon this land! Thou art in mine realm now, in mine power. I can show ye the past as surely as ye stand within the hold of the present."
I had no choice but to look on in mute horror as the vision before me snarled in his regal tirade. A flicker of white that went unseen until this point caught my attention. On the grass near the tyrant's hooves was a slender white-maned mare. Her coat was spattered with scarlet, the source of which seemed to stem from a free flowing wound at her throat. She simply stared up at the stallion, her crimson eyes patient with his bellowing venom against her.
"Witch! Wicked and foul mare! What hast thou done to me?! Miserable wretch! Ye shall pay for your treason!"
Even as he stamped about in growing fury, the skies darkened with heavy clouds, obscuring the white moon as a tempestuous wind picked up in strength. The petals of the delicate flowers broke loose in the might of the oncoming storm. Swirling about them as surely as the glass shards continued their dangerous dance around us. The black of his hooves seemed to dull, shifting to a stony marble as he cursed the mare at his feet. Even though his snout was clearly stained with her blood, this itself began the same drastic change. The young Nicolae reared back on his hind hooves, still spouting threats as the mare watched him, an odd expression adorning her face. It was not fear. No, that emotion was far removed. She did not fear him or her imminent death. It seemed...pity. Pity for the stallion, for the cruel lord that he had become. He must have observed this as well, for his angry scowl turned into a mocking sneer. The fangs glinted red with the fresh blood as he spoke. His voice had changed as quickly as his anger, the loud roar becoming a smooth, utterly silken poison.
"Nay, thou need not pity me, flower. Fear me, hate me, tremble before me if thou wouldst. I am not finished, Rose. Thine curse is only begun! I will return, and my vengeance shall be wrought upon you yet! Mark mine words, ye will belong to me. Thine blood shall be mine!"
These last words echoed into the now fully wrought storm as the last of movement and vitality left the stallion, a statue frozen in time left in his stead. I tried to look away, but found myself unable. The mare seemed to share my sentiment, for she closed her eyes upon the statue; her form becoming the very petals that swirled in the wind. Thus, she vanished and the scene went black.
....
An endless voice, and still his whispering in my ear.
"Ah, do ye see now? Can ye finally comprehend? Shall I twist the knife even further to chill your heart's core? Ye foolish mare, with thine living flesh and warm blood, I could very easily have loved you in that time. Yet thine spirit drives me to this, this and more! I shall rend you from the very fabric of this time if I must, straight into this hellish void if it so pleases me."
I shuddered at his threat, not daring imagine what sort of fate could possibly be so much worse than this, that he would use the very thought to shoot fear into my soul. Still, the sight of the spirit's calm eyes, her quiet demeanor in the face of young Nicolae's wrath gave me courage. I attempted to cease my trembling, masking my visible terror and looking silently ahead. Even if he still held me frozen with strange power, I could at least do this much.
A low chuckle.
"Such trickery does not become you. Try as you might I can sense your fear, smell it even. The perfume wreaths you so clearly, just as the scent of a rose marks the garden nearby. Thine curse is at an end, yet mine upon you is only beginning."
I flinched. As to how, or why, I can only assume that his power over me in that moment was not absolute. That, or the sudden searing pain on my throat was snapping me out of his trance. I felt the fangs dig deep, and became weak.
His voice once again.
"It would seem another has come to your aid. Yet they strive in vain. Only the blood will lift the veil and end this cursed night. And thine life with it."
The pain was too much in that moment, and my voice broke free from it's silence with painful whimpering. This only pleased him, the room coming back to focus around me once more as he faded from sight, a last warning ringing in my ears.
"Our next meeting shall be thy last, dear flower. As one becomes spirit, I shall gain flesh, power, my place once again! Until that time..."
What occurred next can only be described as though a watch that had been paused, speeding up briefly to return to the present time. The bat screeched in my ears, fluttering in terror as the sound of voices came from outside. The key is in the door now, and I hear voices calling me from the opposite side.

Apothecarium's Notes

Time: Late
Location: Miss Rose's Chambers
This night is proving to be quite fond of interruptions and unusual occurrences. Well, more so than the normality of endless night.
I had been closely examining the blood from the Lord's chamber when he burst into my rooms without warning. His eyes held a ghastly expression as they darted about the chambers, finally settling on me. He rushed over as I made a quick bow of greeting. He interrupted this mid-bow, urging me out into the hall.
"He is here!" he said. "Here within these very walls! I can sense it! He has returned! We must be quick and ever vigilant. Search every corridor, seek him out! Not only the guards, but we must search also!"
No other explanation was offered. Only a grim not and a hurried exit into the shadows of the numerous halls of the castle. What the Lord lacked in coherent sentence and reasoning, he readily made up for simply by the wild look within his eyes as well as the frantic tone of his otherwise commanding voice. I started off in the opposite direction of Ancient Blood's, searching for anything out of the ordinary.
It did not take long to stumble upon what I sought.
A boisterous clatter sounded from Miss Rose's chambers nearby. The guards stationed outside of her door echoed my alarm, hurriedly attempting to open the locked door. I was upon them in an instant, removing the key from their still fumbling hooves and swiftly unlocking the barring door.
The sight which greeted me was one of complete disarray. Papers and glass everywhere, books strewn about as though by a great gust from outside the broken window. A single bat pierced the night with his cry of alarm. And Rose, poor Rose.
She did not look up at my apporach, nor seemed to mind the guards that passed so close to her in their search for the intruder now long gone. I came as close to her side as I could without frightening her further. Her mane was disheveled as the very room, eyes far off and focused on nothing. A single spot of crimson on her mane caught my eye, and I brought my hoof up to brush the hair away from the spot.
In this moment, she stirred, bolting from my touch and cowering against the far wall of the chambers. My removal of that strand of hair brought to light a mark near the base of her throat. A fresh bite. I felt myself pale, and she saw this. That poor trembling creature. Quickly replacing her mane over the spot, she lowered her head, ashamed by the blemish. I opened my mouth to speak, to reassure and console her, when the Lord entered the room.
His fearful eyes tenatively surveyed the disaster, the guards telling them of their findings and the disappearance of the threat. This last bit of news however, was completely un-needed. The usual calm demeanor of Ancient Blood's had returned. He knew full well that Nicolae was gone.
With a single look from their Lord, the guards left the room, and we three stood in silence for a time. I knew he could smell it, much more than I could. The blood. Still, I attempted a semblance of reasoning.
"My Lord, the threat has passed and your guest is weary. Her health will only continue to decline in such circumstances. Might I suggest that we relocate to-"
A rose petal fell to the floor to land near miss Rose's hoof. It was stained red. My words died in my throat as Ancient Blood moved to tower over her. She did not recoil from his touch as he moved away the locks of her mane to bring the bite markings once again to light. Yet we were both startled to see that a full rose was blossoming from within the wound. The petals were red as the bloodied mark. Even now, I cannot fathom proper explanation for such.
The Lord did not speak, simply looked at the marks in a silent fury. His crimson eyes narrowed, smoldering with what I can only assume to be hatred for the one who dared to puncture the otherwise whole and pure form.
I tried once again.
"Lord, I would ask your permission to better examine this. There is room in my study. I ask your permission to relocate Miss Rose to my care."
It seems my words fell on deaf ears. I could well have been back in Canterlot for all the good it was doing. As though I were a specter neither seen nor heard,Miss Rose began in a tenative whisper.
"I-Is it true then?"
We both waited.
"Is my blood the only way...can it lift the curse from this land? Will it help?"
If memory is correct, I attempted to catch her eye. To shake my head or make some silent motion against this. The Lord however gave a deep sigh, searching hers for any hesitation in this questioning. After a few more minutes of uninterrupted silence, he closed his eyes and turned away. She would not allow this to pass as a suitable answer and stepped forward.
"Lord, when I first arrived here, you commanded me to find answers, to discover a way to remove this curse. Is there a chance of it through my blood? Please, answer me truthfully in this."
I sought her eyes as my Lord had previously. Surely there was some fear. Any slight doubt or concern for her own safety. If so, I could not find it. Her eyes were so imploring, full of pleading. The Lord gazed at them as well, drawn into their depths as it were. Finally, he bowed his head and started out of the door.
"Apothecarium, escort her. I shall follow."
In this, I knew where it was that the Lord wished me to lead her. And I, I having no choice in this. I would have wept if it were
possible. Oh, Celestia! What is it that I do? Am I to lead her, this lamb to the slaughter?!
I looked to miss Rose, and she bowed her head in acceptance of the Lord's wishes. Thus, we march on.
As instructed, I led her through the halls of the castle. We passed the monumental pillars of the grand rooms, ornamented in golden filigree that spoke of days long before the dark of the cursed moon. We moved through the older chambers, some of the first built in this land. Still, we were silent, not but our hooves upon the stone and carpet to betray our presence here in these hallowed halls.
I chanced a look at the mare. She kept her head bowed low still, seeming to know some semblance of the fate that awaited at the end of our path. I turned back to discern the Lord's expression, but found that his gaze was fixed on miss Rose as well. Whether we expected her to flee at the last moment or fade upon the spot, I cannot say. Yet it is not very often you find
one willing to sacrifice for complete and utter strangers.
At the end of the halls, a staircase descended into darkness and a bloody glow beyond. We all know where this path leads. The room of the Blood Crystals, and the altar of stone.
Ancient Blood's Musings
May Celestia forgive me for what I have done. Or, if the gods and goddesses that rule over us all, even the Princesses, can show mercy. I beg of any. Let me take her place! The blood, the blood! Too much of it. I cannot stem the flow. The wound is too deep, much too deep. By God! What have I done?! Apothecarium told for me to stay back, to let him work. But all was in vain. Too late, much too late. Damn him! Damn Nicolae and his lies! The blood is pure, yes, but spilled now. Too much of it and too soon. He planned this, that accursed fiend! Damn him, and damn me as well.
Even as I write, the blood is still upon my hooves, my entire countenance covered in all she gave. She is gone. Moved on to the realm of the spirits.
Still, it is only right that I give an accurate account of what has transpired. If nothing else, it shall serve to remember her last moments.
I followed behind her as Apothecarium led our way down the twisting staircases. All light failed us in the gloom of these stone passageways. At the last, there was only the dull glow of those infernal crystals. The same gems by whose light I now pen these final times.
She remained silent during the whole of the journey, head humbly bowed. The proverbial lamb without blemish. Ah, I should have known in that instant. I should have paused, taken her away by force if I must. Still, the time for such has long since passed.
We pressed forward, once more entering the room of crystals and the dreaded altar. It all was familiar to her, even though she had only stepped hoof here once before. She followed the long path to the altar and the largest crystal rising up just beyond it. No word was said, no ceremony or processional. She simply lay down on the altar, seeming to know full well what I meant to do. What I did. Celestia help me! I can scarce bare to pen it further. But I must continue, even if the ink be the last of the blood.
Apothecarium looked about wildly, knowing yet fearing it. His blue eyes spoke volumes to me in those few moments. He pleaded silently, urging me to seek another method. Any save for this.
I could not.
Till the last, he strove against me until I glared down at him. He recalled his place. A servant. He bowed low and stepped away towards the entrance. He could not watch, and I did not blame him. If only I had listened. If only I had yielded to his wisdom. Schooled by the great Starswirl the Bearded. Yet I did not, I could not. Blame Nicolae as I might, I wanted to know if it was possible. Her blood had miraculously sprouted such crimson blossoms prior to this. Could it be done again? Perhaps the method lies in excess. Would a larger bloodletting allow the blossoms to run rampant. 'The blood is the life.' Over and over again in my mind, those words ran their course.
'The blood is the life. The blood is the life.'
I made my approach to the altar, hooves matching pace with the beating of that fearful heart. She knew what was to come. She knew what I was to do. A final glance to me. Her crimson eyes betraying her knowledge, and something else. That final look, what was that emotion? It haunts me even now as the body grows colder upon the altar. What did she wish me to see in those eyes? What was she telling me?
Forgiveness? I wish it. Forgiveness for my folly, my accursed actions.
I took hold of the dagger. That sharp instrument in my hooves, capable of unlocking the music of pain, agony. An orchestration of despair. Symphony of it all to weave forth this tale of tragedy. The crystal's glow clearly shone upon the sharpened metal as surely as my magic had grasped it. I held it aloft. Her eyes closed, the long lashes gracefully falling upon the high cheek bones. I swung it down with all my might.

Celestia! Luna! Oh, what I have done!
The feel of the flesh giving way. The warmth of the liquid that welled up around it, spurting the lifeblood. Not a sound from her. Not even a whimper. That terrible deed. May I be condemned to the deepest pit for this. I am not better than he, my
brother for my treachorous action! Damned.
And yet, the very instant the heart stopped it's feeble beating, the lungs silencing their strenuous attempts to breathe. Even as the blood still flowed around the altar and spilled into the pool of the ancients; their came a deep and angry cry that shook the very foundations of the sacrificial room. One I could only recognize as him. Nicolae! The cry continued to ring out, feverish and wrathful.
"No! It is not over! Not done with you yet, foolish mare!"
A black cloud rose up from the pool of blood, thick and menacing. I saw within the shape of my brother rearing back upon his hooves before plunging headlong into the still body upon the altar. Ah, what is the meaning of this?
Apothecarium and I wait anxiously to see.

Funeral Preparation and Unexpected Return
Apothecarium's Notes
Time: Unknown.
Location: The Crystal Chamber
Let this be a recorded statement for the deceased. I am a doctor, am I not? I must look on such things in a way as my profession dictates, and record all. There is no way to account for the time of death, nor can I give an accurate description of cause, save to say that the blood loss has stemmed from a deep gash above the sternum and upper chest area. The blade missed the heart, yet severed the carotid artery as well as the cranial vena cava. Death occured within a minute at the most. Suffering level: Excruciating. I shall keep this last note to myself, however, for the Lord seems more distraught about this than I could have guessed. He had been near frantic at the realization of his actions, and to think any further on this event may well be precursory to a descent into madness.
There is little more that can be done at this point. I have cleaned away the remaining blood that did not find it's way into the pool at the altar's base, and have dressed the wounds in preparation for a possible funeral on the grounds. Perhaps the rose garden close at hoof would provide a fitting backdrop. Still, I dare not talk about such in front of the Lord. His wrath is swift as is, and I do not dare invoke it on the brink of sorrow.
Perhaps it would be best to remove him from this place. He stares at the deceased too intently. Does he believe that sheer will alone may yet rouse her from eternal slumber?
I speak much too soon.
How can this be? How is it that the body shudders in death?! This is magic, surely. Illusion and false hope! No...Nicolae? Be this Nicolae's doing?! He couldn't...he wouldn't dare! He couldn't attemt to take physical form through her!
The Lord's visage betrays a mingling range of baffled and furious emotion. It would be best to take up arms.

Immortal Rose's Journal
All Was black. I felt strange, suspened as it were, in a void. Nothing above or below save for shadows and silence.
And him.
He snarled in adamant fury as he started toward me, head lowered in menace.
"Ye think it is so easy to escape my grasp? Ye seek safety in death? Foolish, foolish mare! Not even death itself can save you! Mine curse is still upon you. See? The mark still lies upon thy flesh."
He paused a moment to chuckle, raising his head up in an athorative sneer.
"Ye shall not breath thy last till I will it. Thine heart shall not cease till I deem it time. This act of sacrificial slaughter was mercy, yet I...I will make you suffer! Ye shall know pain, be wedded to it. Ye shall beg me to end it, plead and grovel before me yet! I shall see to it. And to that end, this!"
Here, he lowered his head once more and charged against me. The sharp horn buried deep into the spot of the dagger's wicked death wound. The seering pain tore through me as though the horn were made of fire. Indeed, it even glowed like burning coals as he ripped it free.
I stumbled away, not being able to hold back the agonized cry that seemed to be pulled from my very soul. I felt my heart throbbing back to life, the dull aching of the senses returning with a vengeance. The void was fading, even as his laughter
resounded harsh and tormenting in my ears.
"I give thee life once again so that I may rip thine soul out at the last!"
The emptiness of the void left, and all senses assaulted me in life once more. I became painfully aware of aches all through my body. The deep wound where the dagger had found it's sheath in my flesh, the stiffness of my limbs on the cold, hard stone of the altar. The blinding glow of the crystals and the chilling air in that room. All this, and the din of voices at my ear, calling me urgently as their faces searched mine in earnest.
They were confused, and rightly so. Expressions of relief blended seamlessly with questioning, sorrow, and disbelief. I looked back at them, doing all in my power to face them fully without unnecessary movement. The Lord was the first to speak.
"By the gods.... the Rose of Immortality!"
Was that what I had become? Was I truly immortal now? No, not immortal. Lucky at best, if such a thing could be considered luck.
I fear worse is yet to come.
Arcane Sonata - The Composer
Immortal Rose's Journal
Ah! The concerto of night! Such a beautiful music as I have never before heard, nor possibly ever again. I could breathe easily now, away from that demonic room of blood and altars. My relief at escape from within that chamber is matched only in my concern for the Lord who remains within. He seemed so very troubled before we parted ways, yet I dare not question his commands to the physician..... Apothecarium? I believe that was the name used.
He is a kind doctor, and seems very gentle in nature. Even though we are nearly strangers, I find myself at ease in his presence. He was caring as he helped me from the room, and this strange scar hardly aches at all thanks to his skill.
We walked quite a ways upward, back to the main floor of the castle's structure. From here, I was led to a wing wholly different from my previous lodgings. Where all was rough stone and harsh crimson in the former chambers, here was vast marble, golden inlay and lush carpeting. Even the air here seemed lighter, the chill and darkness nearly gone from memory.
We paused outside a set of double doors, the room within seeming to be the source of the compelling music. He opened these for me, bidding that I enter. I did so and saw a remarkable hall, vast in it's splendor and filled with a wide variety of beautiful, gleaming instruments. Surely even the orchestras of Canterlot pale in comparison to the collection here. Glinting French horns, flutes, piccolos; shining wooden violins, bass, even a grand, ornate pipe organ taking up the entire expanse of the farthest wall.
Seated here was the composer, fully engrossed in the masterpiece of his work. He was a unicorn, as are all that I have met thus far. His indigo mane was tied back into a shortened tail, and the magic from his horn had suspended many of the instruments in mid air as the organ continued to play. The song itself was an intricate piece, ranging from soft and slow to plunging deep and ominous chords. I nearly felt my heart being pulled from within me at the melody as the violin came into focus. The long, drawn out voice of the instrument resounded from the high vaulted ceiling in a sad, wailing chorus. Apothecarium cleared his throat, breaking the orchestrated trance. I blinked up at him as he addressed the magical maestro.
"Arcane? Do forgive the intrusion, but we have a guest present."
The unicorn lowered the volume of his song, bringing the full composition to a slow ending and setting each instrument carefully down in it's proper place. He spoke not a word, however picked up lined parchment and scrawled a few hurried notes down from his memory. It was only when this had been accomplished to his satisfaction did he set the papers down and advance toward our place still near the room's double doors. His keen eyes and sharp manner instantly saw me in an involuntary bow. I glanced at my companion to see that he had also adopted a similar stance. The unicorn studied us both in silence a little longer before giving a bow of his own as well as a nod of recognition to Apothecarium.
"You must forgive me if my music has disturbed you, Madam. I shall attempt to keep the notes pianissimo if you would prefer."
Apothecarium spoke up quickly, shaking his head.
"Oh! It was no disturbance at all. I was showing Miss Rose the grounds and layout of the castle when we heard your music. I thought it only fitting to show the music room and the source of the symphony." Here, he turned to me to give proper introduction. "Miss Rose, may I introduce Sir Arcane Sonata. Arcane, this is Miss Immortal Rose, the guest of Lord Ancient Blood."
The unicorn turned once more to appraise me, and I kept my head low.
"So I see. It is a pleasure to meet you, Miss Rose. I trust you have been treated well within the kingdom?"
I saw Apothecarium flinch from the corner of my eye, as well as Arcane Sonata's eyes upon my scar. Still, I gave a humble nod.
"Yes, both Apothecarium and the Lord have been most kind."
This seemed to be an unusual statement to the musician, for he raised an eyebrow and turned to the physician.
"Oh? You have not yet been introduced to the others? How very odd..."
Apothecaruim was quick to interject.
"Yes, well I was unsure of who was present in the castle at this time and did not wish to interrupt." A quick glance at my questioning expression before he continued. "Y-You are quite right though. We shall seek out the others at once. Proper introductions must be made."
Sir Arcane simply nodded at this, giving a bow once more to me and returning to glance at his papers.
"A wise decision. This castle is home to guards, servants and many others like myself. It is not often that the Lord brings a guest within his home, and I am certain that the others will be anxious to meet her. Now, I do beg your pardon, but I must finish my work. I trust we shall meet again, madam. Until that time however, I bid you both adieu."
We exited the room as the prelude to a deep and dreadful requiem commenced. I chanced a look backwards to see Arcane's magic at work on the organ once again. It would seem that his magics are quite powerful indeed, or at least have some deeper underlying intent. As the door closed upon the musician, I could have sworn to see a wailing group of specters emerging from the tops of the gleaming pipes to writhe about their summoner.
Immortal Rose's Journal
Upon exiting the strange music hall, Apothecarium led me further down the same castle wing and turned the corner into a large open room. It was set up nicely as a grand dining hall with a large chandelier suspended overhead. The many crystals set into the fixture sparkled upon the table underneath. The latter set with pristine linens, settings of polished silverware and porcelain dishes. I pondered momentarily at the absurdity of such things, especially amongst those who may well disregard them entirely for other methods of sustenance. Perhaps it was more for show than any real purpose...or possibly even the room where an all too mortal victim would take a last meal.
This last thought made me shudder, yet such fear soon gave way when I noticed an aroma of fresh baked goods wafting from behind a small door adjacent to the room. I glanced to my guide who gave an encouraging nod. Hence, we entered into the small room which proved to be a cozy kitchen. The air here was warm and inviting, the complete opposite of most other rooms in the castle; and smelled of rich desserts and savory entrees. Busy at work here, I was surprised to find a young mare. She bustled about, carrying trays of pastries to a small countertop as her mane bounced about in a pair of twin ponytails that she had set high upon her head.
She did not notice our entrance into the small room, and was much involved in her work when Apothecarium cleared his throat to garner her attention. At this, she paused. Her green eyes were wide and jovial, and she set the tray down instantly to bound over to us. Here, she gave a polite smile to the physician and turned to me with concern.
"Oh! Apothecarium! Why didn't you tell me that you would be visiting? I would have cleaned up a bit more. And look at the poor dear! Here she is in this ghastly place, and scared out of her wits! Shame on you, you could have at least done so much as feed the poor girl. She looks half-starved as is! Come, come, let's get you some proper food. Oh, these ruffians. They know next to nothing about ladies, and even less than that about us mortals."
She continued rambling on, not allowing Apothecarium or myself a single word of refusal or anything else. Though I was at that moment much too surprised to speak. It seemed this mare knew me, or at the very least, about me and my stay inside the castle. She spoke as though an acquaintance would in reuniting with an old friend. This was puzzling in itself, yet she also had spoke of being mortal. I wished to question her further on these matters as she pushed me out of the kitchen and guided me to a seat in the dining hall, yet my stomach interrupted me at the most inopportune time. It was a faltering realization that I had not yet taken a single meal in my time at the kingdom. There was no way to distinguish day or night with the everlasting moon, much less appropriate dining times. I lowered my head, ashamed at the organ's loud call for food, yet she smiled in understanding.
"Don't worry, Rose. I'll fix something for you right away!"
She passed Apothecarium on her way back to the kitchen, and I heard his remarks to her.
"Miss Licorice, how is it that you know of Miss Rose? This is your first meeting of her, is it not?"
"Oh, yes, but you forget that Lazzy keeps me up to date with that side of the castle." She gave a small giggle, the first happy laughter I had heard in what seemed ages. "You can't hide these things from me. Besides, girls must stick together!"
I watched for them to return to the dining hall, yet only the physician did so, shaking his head in an exasperated notion. He caught my eyes however, and did what he could to offer better explanation.
"Forgive me. That is Miss Licorice. She is the baker here, as well as the cook for the entities that are not... blood-drinkers."
He said this last part in hesitation, his eyes doing what they could to avoid my throat and the area where the markings had been. The awkward silence was short-lived as Licorice rounded the corner and set a small plate in front of me. I looked down to see a small frosted pastry. Not exactly a sustaining meal. She noticed my confusion and offered an apologetic smile.
"I'm sorry. All I have are cookies, cupcakes and sweets at the moment. The time for dinner is about an hour or two from now, and the meal will be much much bigger. For now though, please eat something. Would you like some tea as well? Lazzy said you like tea."
I frowned, remembering her using the name before.
"Forgive me, but who is..."
At that moment, a high-pitched squeal resounded in the dining room, followed by the appearance of the small bat from my chambers. He flew directly overhead, circling the chandelier in a dizzying dance before landing squarely in the cupcake on my plate. The furball then proceeded to consume the entire confection without a single thought. Licorice gasped, giving a frown to the small creature.
"Lazzy! That is no way to behave in front of company! Oh, I am so very sorry, Miss Rose. He does know better than that. I'll get you a new plate."
She took the plate, bat and all, into the kitchen as Apothecarium smiled.
"That would be Sir Lazorus, or 'Lazzy' as Miss Licorice affectionately calls him. He is a common guest at the castle. I remember seeing him flying about in your chambers earlier. He must have informed Miss Licorice of your arrival. You must pardon his manners. He is quite an avid fan of sweets, especially those made by Miss Licorice. Otherwise, he is a perfect gentleman, I assure you."
My stay within this kingdom seems to grow stranger by the hour.
Lazorus and Dinner Preparations
Apothecarium's Notes
Time: I feel this is rather superfluous by now
Location: The Grand Dining Hall
I could not help but give a small chuckle at the perplexed expression that adorned Miss Rose's visage. It was nearly the look of complete confusion and mystification that a small foal would wear when shown a simple trick deemed to be magical. This look was heightened all the more when soon after my statement as to Sir Lazorus's manners, he reappeared in the room with Miss Licorice at his side. The difference being that he was now his original pony self, and no longer the small bat that the guest was accustomed to seeing. She could not but stare in her wide-eyed amazement as he stammered an apology and offered a new pastry to her. She accepted this gracefully, for even in the midst of inconceivable events,Miss Rose has always proven herself to be graceful; and proceeded to enjoy it as Miss Licorice brought out a tea kettle and a few cups. I always enjoy a cup of tea, and sat with the others to partake of one. I must say that Miss Rose seemed more at ease to be near one similar to herself. I can scarce blame her after the prior events that have occurred. It would be much better for her if she were to forget these troubling things altogether in favor of happier instances.
She spent a good deal of time questioning Sir Lazorus and Miss Licorice about their roles in the kingdom as well as the former's abilities in transformation. I interjected, explaining the peculiar experimentation to create a vampiric species with no need of blood sustenance, and how such had led to his genetic alteration. In a sense, this makes Sir Lazarus remarkably unique. She took this information in strides, accepting it as fact and moving on to another topic. With what she has witnessed, I feel there is no more need of doubts in this kingdom. Why attempt explanations of the unexplainable in such a realm as this? To do so would only drive one mad.
We all conversed quite awhile longer before Miss Licorice remarked that dinner preparations would need to be made for those who depended on more natural means of feeding. I agreed that this was best, and rose from my seat to escort Miss Rose to other areas of the castle. This plan however, was halted as Miss Licorice nearly shoved Sir Lazorus and myself back in the direction of the kitchen with talk of needing assistance and that we would both do rather nicely as helpers. I made a quick apology to Miss Rose, and she seemed to understand.
I remember vaguely hoping that she would remain close by until after the meal has ended. There are still a great deal many areas in the castle's grounds, and a few other entities lurking within.
About half way through our work in the small kitchen, Sir Arcane stepped within the room to retrieve a small bit of the left over tea, and to warn to Sir Lazorus against further use of the french horn as a storage bin for cookies or else "a disaster beyond your imagination will occur". After the warning had produced the desired effect, I took a moment as to inquire if Sir Arcane had greeted Miss Rose on his was through the dining hall. He informed me that he had not seen her in the vicinity nor anywhere in the halls leading to the room. Immediately I hurried to make certain of this. Yes, Sir Arcane was right. The tea cup still sat on the table, yet Miss Rose was nowhere to be found.
Miss Licorice will have to pardon my skipping out on the remainder of the preparations, lest we be one guest short come suppertime.
Immortal Rose's Journal
My recent cup of tea and small pastry had renewed my energies slightly, and I could not quell the rising curiosity that now presented itself to me. I could still hear the din coming from within the warm kitchen nearby, and from the sound of their preparations, dinner was still quite a ways off. Rising up, I started off with full intent to merely peek around the closest of the rooms, possibly explore the other corridors as well and return back without causing any alarm as to my absence. I now see that was complete folly on my part.
I should have known better and accounted for the strange nature of this castle. My path led me down one corridor, and up a few flights of stairs before I had become completely and utterly lost. Attempting to right myself and retrace a path backwards proved also to be of little avail. Where I once could have sworn stood the wide descending staircase onto a smooth stone landing below; was now a locked pair of cavernous doors. In the same manner did an overhanging balcony change into a staircase spiraling up into the gloomy darkness, and a small alcove into a series of inlaid windows. Truly this castle must be the source of many frustrations and possible fatalities to the unwise traveler. Oh, how I should have been patient. I highly doubt Apothecarium has passed these halls once with a single issue.
I paused at one of the nearby windows to desperately attempt making a crude path by memory when a dark shadow blotted out the crimson moonlight overhead. When I glanced up, for who would not in such a situation, I scrambled back at the sight that greeted me. Perched gracefully at the outer window sill was the silhouette of a pegasus. His peridot eyes watched me, obviously pleased by the scare he had given. With a curved grin, he chuckled.
"Well, well, well... what have we here? Such a beauty! Are you lost, my pet?"
The window seemed substanceless, so easily he passed through it to stand before me. Perhaps it had been open all along, and he simply stepped inside. I glanced back to ascertain this, yet the glass in the casing was as solid as the stone walls opposite me. He must have mistaken my observations for fright, as he continued.
"My, the poor dear seems to have lost not only her way, but her tongue as well. I can't have frightened you that badly, have I? No need to be shy. Come now, let me hear that pretty voice of yours."
The nature of this pegasus, and the aura that he exuded made me instantly ill at ease. I bowed low.
"Forgive me, sir. I really must be on my way. Th-the others are expecting me, and I would very much hate to keep them waiting."
With this, I turned to where I knew was a staircase behind me. Even if it did lead upward, there would surely be one to lead back down. Possibly on the other side of the castle. I am not sure if shadows played tricks on me, or if he was quicker, yet by the time I had turned to face the stairs, he was blocking them.
"Leaving so soon? They can wait a few minutes longer, can't they? After all, there should be plenty to go around."
I cringed as he flicked his tongue over a pair of sharp teeth, moving backward into the light of the windows. My worries were short lived, for a darker shadow appeared over the pegasus, and a familiar voice called out.
"Malphas.... you couldn't possibly be scheming some ill-conceived indecency against my personal guest, could you?"
I never thought I would feel relief at this particular voice before now, yet I could not now help the feeling of calm and safety as it rang out through the darkness.
The pegasus before me visibly started, shrinking from the voice and it's owner.
"Ah! L-Lord Blood! How good to see you. I was merely helping your little guest here find her way back." He gave a nervous laugh. "G-good thing you went looking for her. This isn't exactly the best place to lose your way."
Ancient Blood emerged from the shadows, fixing the other with a stern glare.
"Indeed. You are excused Malphas. I do believe I can guide her back from this point. Dinner preparations are nearly completed."
The pegasus, Malphas as the Lord had called him, gave a hurried bow as well as a muttered phrase or two under his breath before spreading his wings as wide as the stone hallway would allow, and bolting into the darkness of the night. I gave an audible sigh of relief, bowing appreciatevely toward Ancient Blood.
"F-Forgive me, and my foolishness. I had only wished to explore. I did not think that I-"
My voice failed me under his stern look of reproach, and I held my tongue. He opened a nearby door, revealing a stone staircase descending back to the main floor.
"Come. The others are waiting, and dinner is near ready. And, Miss Rose?"
I paused, looking up to his question.
"This castle is home to a number of different beings. It would be in your very best interest to not wander off without an escort. Now, let us return."
I lowered my head, following him back to the dining hall.
Immortal Rose's Journal
The dining room was well lit when we at last entered, most of the seats being already occupied by those whom I had recently met. This was a peculiar set up, or so I thought, for I had assumed most of the castle's residents to be primarily blood-drinkers. This thought made me even more nervous than my previous state as the Lord motioned silently to the empty chair at his side. I obediently took my seat, however, and glanced about the table.
Licorice was closest to my opposite side, Lazorus and Apothecarium following her. The latter was seated at the farthest end of the table, directly opposite the Lord. I had hoped for the physician to have been positioned closer than this, for his aura was gentle, and would otherwise have calmed my already fraying nerves. At the opposing side of the long table, Arcane Sonata sat at the Lord's other side, the opposite of myself. The pegasus known as Malphas sat next to him. As I glanced at Malphas, he gave a furtive wink, quickly interrupted by the Lord's dark tenor.
"Now then, we have all gathered at last. I trust Apothecarium has made introductions?" The physician nodded as he continued. "Miss Rose will be staying for some time as my guest. During her stay I trust you shall all mind your manners and treat her kindly, else I need not say what would befall you."
His scarlet eyes that had been slowly scanning the table as he spoke lighted briefly upon Malphas at this last statement before rising once more to survey the spread before us.
"Please, partake. There is much here, and wasting it would be out of the question."
I followed his gaze, observing the generous platters of food that had been prepared and set on fine plates of exquisite china. A place setting and gleaming silverware had been set up neatly at my seat, as well as in front of the occupants on my side. The Lord and those on the opposite side were without these preparations. Only a silver chalice was set before each. I could very well surmise a guess as to what each of these cups held within, and my appetite nearly vanished entirely at the thought. Quickly averting my eyes and attention, I turned to observe the others closer to my own seat.
Licorice was already piling her plate with some of the offerings of the platters, giving me an encouraging smile as she set a small tart upon my plate.
"It would be best to claim a dessert early, or else Lazzy will eat them all!"
I looked up at the bat-like stallion, whom had already heaped his plate full of sugary desserts, and was proceeding to devour them one by one. Apothecarium gave an exasperated shake of his head, gingerly sipping a cup of tea and nibbling at his own supper. My musings were interrupted by a cold hoof at my shoulder, and I turned back to Ancient Blood.
"Please, eat. Your ordeals have been plenty, and you must regain your energy."
The expression upon his face was a difficult thing to read, for it told of sternness, yet also of concern. Possibly even kindness. After all, he had in many ways shown a brand of his own caring and protection through such orders and harsh sounding dictation. I mused on this, doing what I could not to stare at the silver chalice resting nearby. It's presence did little in helping my hunger, and with each passing minute I could feel any semblance of it fading away. Still, I nodded and mumbled a quiet thank you.
This seemed satisfactory enough, for he resumed sating his thirst as I turned back to my plate.
The remainder of the dinner was mostly enjoyed in silence and before long most all of the members had taken their leave. Licorice began clearing the plates and silverware from the table, Lazorus helping her by ridding most of any left over desserts.
I felt much better now that hunger was no longer an issue, and I could feel my mental faculties making a full recovery to their normal standings. It is common with most mortals after a warm and filling supper to feel a slight lethargy creep about and prepare them for a night's restful slumber. This remained true even for myself. My eyelids felt quite heavy, and I wished for nothing more than a proper night's rest. The events of the past seemed so far removed in the light of the company of so many others, and I felt safer that I had upon first arriving in this strange land. I may very well have slipped fully into complete repose on the spot if it weren't for the Lord's voice. Though, it seemed strange. His voice was quite loud, yet carried with it a strange echo that I could not readily place.
"Apothecarium, please escort Miss Rose to one of the chambers in this wing. She seems much too tired to make the return trip to her own room at the present."
I could hear all of this being said, yet wondered why they would speak amongst themselves in such a way while I was still near them. I could move still, could I not? Surely my chambers were not that far from here.
It was not until I attempted moving that I found the process extremely difficult. My limbs were heavy with sleep, and my eyes had closed tight without my knowledge. Sleep is a very strange thing, is it not? To hear all manner of things surrounding you, yet to not be able to move nor speak for yourself. I heard Apothecarium close by my side. He was very quick.
"I-Is it quite alright to move her? She seems completely unconscious. That is, I know we can't simply leave her here, yet all the bed chambers are on the higher floors."
A few moments of silence from Ancient Blood, no doubt debating where to place me at this point.
I attempted to raise myself up or at least to speak on my own behalf, yet found myself completely bound in a semiconscious form of repose.
"The music room then. Sonata will protest, I am sure, yet that is the closest available location for her at the present time."
I felt a slight shifting under me, as one who has had the ground entirely taken from beneath. Yet I did not fall, nor did I know at the present who was supporting me.
Apothecarium spoke, very near at hoof.
"I have her, but where should she recline? The music hall is not fitted for resting."
The Lord's voice was further off, the stones of the hall echoing it back in a strange manner.
"The organ's seat will do well as a makeshift couch."
The rest of the brief journey was made in silence, even though I continued my efforts to escape from slumber's unyeilding grasp. Was this simply a dream in and of itself? Perhaps I may wake back in the Everfree, or at the very least, in the first chamber where I had dozed close to the small bat. This land is indeed strange if one cannot be certain what is dream and what is real. This may well be a dream within a dream. Though, this land was unusual to begin with and who can rightly say what is strange and what in normal in such a realm?
By an by, I felt myself being lowered upon a soft cushion. The movement stopped and the voices of the two began to receed out of the room.
"Keep an eye on her, Apothecarium, and be certain none come near this room while she rests. There is still work to be done in the room of crystals and I wish not to be disturbed nor hear of any other incidents."
I heard the door latch shut and a key turn into place before I lost the battle against Sleep entirely and his brother Dream took over.
Ancient Blood's Thoughts
I descended to the eternally darkened chamber with haste, thinking only upon what must be done. The smell of blood was still fresh in the air, the copper tinted odor assaulting my nostrils with a vengeance. Even after having taken a recent meal, I could feel the hunger once more welling up in my throat and threatening full consumption of the senses. Indeed, this well may have been the case if not for my notice of a singular peculiarity in the scene that lay before me.
I approached the stone altar cautiously, giving a wide berth to the remaining pools of blood that glimmered still in the dull glow of the crystals. The polished stone seemed to echo faintly the recently played out events upon it's uncaring surface, and I could swear to have seen the reflection of Miss Rose's inert form in the poorly afforded light. This however, is only a later observation. What drew me to the altar presently was a single spot of blood left, and a rose growing out of it. Each petal, leaf, and thorn were tinged with the scarlet life waters, but the plant itself was thriving, rising right from the center of the sacrificial altar!
I beheld this for quite a few minutes in silence before cautiously testing the strength of it's roots. Yes, it's standing was firm, and would not allow to be plucked from it's bed. How extraordinary!
Upon wiping away the small puddle beneath the blossom, I was shocked to find that a piece of root trailed from this bud, and off the stone. I followed this, my eyes now wide as could be at the new spectacle. The vine from the altar led straight to the pool beneath the largest crystal, where a profusion of roses had sprung forth, wildly clinging to each nearby surface! Indeed the room was alive with the bloodied garden! Countless blossoms of red intertwining with the crystals, adding to the sanguine nature of the chamber, and more! The flora plunged to the very depths of the pool, drawing an energy from it the likes of which I have never bore witness to! Yet, I must be certain in this.
If it is possible... If my thoughts are correct...
Oh, I shudder, nay, tremble with joyous anticipation. I can wait no longer. I must be sure!

Location: Outside the doors of the Music Hall
I must have been lightly dozing at the door of the music room when the Lord awoke me. The dream I had been viewing had pertained to him, as well as Miss Rose. I fear I cannot fully recall it however. It has faded mostly from my mind, as most dreams are known to do upon the dreamer's return to the realm of wakefulness. The remaining bits are scattered and very few, mostly speaking of darkness, stone and candles. And the single solitary image of Miss Rose cowering in the dark, the Lord in a defensive posturing over her. His eyes betraying a deep rooted hatred. Why this is? I cannot rightly say.
As for the present: The Lord shook me roughly, his eyes wild. In such a stupor from my repose, I could not quite make any sense of his hurried words. He bade me to follow however, and I could not help but hesitate.
"My Lord, what of the Lady Rose? She still slumbers past these doors."
His response, made me drop my question and hurry after his retreating form.
"What I am to show you may well be the answer to all, including Miss Rose herself. My kingdom is reborn!"
Apothecarium's Notes
Time: Minutes from the former entry
Location: The Rosencroix Garden
I followed the Lord with haste outside to the dimly lit courtyard of the castle, and from there to the neatly kept gardens and the gazebo in the center. From that vantage point it became all clear, and I could well see the reasoning for his hurried gait and wild manner. Surrounding us were roses, vast quantities of them blosoming forth from every afforded surface. Bushes, vines, even petals littering the lush grass where once was not but decayed trees and dry dirt. The land was alive with flora once more, and not simply reserved to only the garden.
From my view upon the raised gazebo, I could see far into the distance, where the carpet of green continued to roll across hills and valleys, trees bursting into life and red petals raining down from every gathering of these flowers. I stood there in awe, not believing what was being shown in that moment. How could I? I, whom have been a resident of this dead realm for nigh over a century. The Lord's voice broke into my thoughts and drew my eye upwards.
"Look, Apothecarium. The moon."
I directed my gaze up to that celestial sphere, my breath draing in a sharp gasp. The once bloodied orb was slowly changing it's sheen. The crimson making way for a blushing pearl, and even this becoming brighter all the more.
"My Lord! The curse! Finally, it is at an end! But why- how? How is this possible?"
With difficulty I tore my eyes from the scene to better appraise my Lord. His face was turned downward, thoughtful if not remorsefully so.
"The blood. Hers. It made it's way into the ancient pool. The magics...I can offer no other explanation."
I took this in silently, a faint glimmer of hope dawning.
"Then she can be free. She can return once again to her own land."
No response.
I attempted to search Ancient Blood's eyes, yet their gaze had turned far off, seeing something that I could not. And yet, pain. Nothing definite, but a hint of inner struggle deep in his downward gaze.
"My Lord..."
The sentiment did not need words. We both knew, and he answered my unspoken inquiry.
"I am a stallion used up. A dead form kept by unnatural preservation. My chances at such have long passed, and it would be folly to bind her. A union with the damned? No. The land is removed of it's curse, yet mine must forever remain."
I felt my heart weep for him, for the aching which his, although it had beat it's last long ago, still could feel all the more. I opened my mouth to speak words similar to this consoling notion, yet paused as he unceremoniously dropped to the grass, lounging there as casually as a commoner might do.
"You've felt like this once before, have you not, Apothecarium? While youth and vigor were yours and the energy of such was still fresh in your blood. Advise me on this matter. How can such pains be ended? Must my curse shackle not only my form and condemn my soul? Will it also consume my dead heart as well?"
I admit I did not know what to say to this. While it is true that such fancies have occurred to me ages ago, I had not entertained them. My studies then, and now were much closer to my heart than any mare could have been. Still, seeing the Lord's pain, to glimpse him seated amongst the petals of roses, I had to offer some semblance of wisdom.
"Affections," I began, for a dared not speak the other term, "are prone to wax and wane, as the tides on the Sanguine Sea. Is this only fancy? If so it will certainly fade with time."
He shook his head grimly, laying a hoof on a nearby blossom of the proliferant flora.
"No. I know of fancy. As for this, it is no such whim. I cannot rightly describe it, Apothecarium. To peer into her eyes, to taste her fear and not even know her. It was involuntary notion that prompted my first act of benevolence toward her, and from that moment, I have regretted nothing save for the last mark I have made upon her. It nearly kills me even now to think of the act committed."
"Then why not speak these words to her? Is there no better means of relaying feeling and emotion than the very truth?"
Again, he shook his head, turning to gaze out past the boundaries of the castle grounds, and to the now flourishing and resplendent land.
"She belongs to another world. She must remain ignorant of this, and blissfully so. Otherwise, only more danger can come to her. We shall celebrate the land and it's rebirth. One last night, then she must leave this realm never to return."
He rose from his seat, picking up the blossom as well. I turned to follow him back to the castle's interior, pausing only as he did so to look back to me.
"One more thing, Apothecarium. What has passed here tonight, these words spoken, must never be uttered to another soul living or dead. To do so would find you without a tongue. Do I make myself clear?"
I nodded, and we returned. I have resumed my watch at the door of the music hall. Miss Rose has not stirred, and none have attempted to disturb her rest. The Lord has retired to his chambers, likely to begin preparations for an impromptu celebration. However, knowing my Lord, it will not be a small affair. No, this may likely rival the gala of Canterlot in it's commencement. Preparations will begin soon enough, and my aid will be expected. Until that time, I will stand watch, and await further instruction.
Immortal Rose's Journal
For how long I slept within the silent music hall, I was not certain. Yet the marked silence was not meant to remain. A swelling of music reached my ears, and my body bolted from it's spot as I spun to locate the source of this impromptu wake up call. My mind's rising was a slow process, labored with attempts to shake off the last of sleep's shackles which still threatened to bind me to faded dreams. I managed however to adjust my eyes from the blur of rest, and discern the object's surrounding me. The hall was dark, yet my eyes were accustomed to this and I was able to see clearly with the aid of gleaming moonlight from the high windows reflected by the polished instruments. There was something about the incoming light that I could not place at the moment, nor did I attempt to in my recently awakened state. Seated next to the instruments was the stallion Arcane Sonata. He did not turn to regard me, simply lowered the music to a near imperceptible volume as he spoke.
"Ah, you have awakened. The Lord will be pleased. He is awaiting your company in the Grand Ballroom. It would be best to seek him immediately, for he does not like to be kept waiting."
Without waiting for my response, he raised the pitch of the melody once more to a fortissimo. Even if I had attempted to speak here, it would do no good. I found my way quickly to the double doors that marked the room's entrance and made my way to the corridor outside. Slumped down in a seat beside the door, I found Apothecarium. He looked nearly as fatigued as I still felt, and I did not wish to disturb him. Surely the ballroom was situated close to the music hall. Still, a faint shiver ran through me at the remembrance of my last wanderings of the castle, and I hesitated to begin my journey. I may not have even began at all, save that Arcane's words still echoed in my mind.
'It would be best to seek him immediately, for he does not like to be kept waiting.'
With a heavy sigh, I started off.
The end of the corridor opened into a great elongated hall, the silent moon following me even here, and spilling across the richly carpeted floors before bouncing off mounted shields and solemn suits of armor. I hurried past these, and through an open alcove before mounting a flight of steps to another floor. Here I was encouraged by a warm golden light flooding out from beneath a nearby set of heavy wooden doors. I paused at these, listening for any telltale signs of life, or unlife as it were from the opposite side. Hearing a single set of staccato steps echoed from a tile floor, I tried the doors and found with delight that they yielded readily. I paused at the top of a grand staircase to drink in the sight of the room before me. Lofty marble walls housed a large room with inlaid tile flooring, golden ornaments and brilliant chandeliers beneath a vaulted ceiling. A large fireplace was set in the far left wall, filling the room with a soft glow and relaxing warmth. Before this fire, I saw the black outline of Ancient Blood. He had turned at my entrance, and even though his back was to the fire, his eyes still seemed to hold it's glow as he appraised me. He did not speak, yet drew to the side, gesturing that I should join him. I did so, quietly descending to the tile floor and bowing before him.
"I was told that you wished to see me?"
He nodded, turning back to the fire.
"Do you remember, Miss Rose, when you first came to this land? You were given one purpose. Examine the blood and rid the land of it's curse. This was all I had asked of you."
I nodded, remembering the first visit to the room of crystal and blood, as well as my fear at his anger. It may be that this remembrance caused an involuntary shudder, or perhaps my sudden shift from the icy gloom of the castle's halls to the warmth of the ballroom caused a tremor to course through me. Regardless, the Lord drew me close to him in a gentle motion, attempting to alleviate this trembling. This was helpful only in the kindness of the gesture alone, for his form was ice, cold as the grave. I did not show my discomfort, remembering that he was still waiting for my answer. Hurriedly I made my response.
"Yes, I remember. I will not forget my vow, and will do all in my power to see that your land is restored."
A chiding laughter rumbled through him, one that I could feel as he stepped back to guide me across the floor to the opposite side of the large room.
"You do not understand, my dear. Please, see for yourself."
The side opposite of the ornate fireplace was a wall composed of full length windows overlooking a balcony and the castle's courtyard beyond this. The reflection of the roaring fire and my own form made it difficult to peer out into the night, yet as I looked closer, I could see the strange phenomenon of the light that had so puzzled me in the music hall. Gone was the crimson glow that I had become so familiar with. The moon high above was that of the purest white. I looked at this innocent orb in awe before directing my gaze out across the ground. Shades of green made almost ethereal by the moonlight danced on the wind, and I realized that it was grass. Fresh grass where once was sand and death. Trees, branches, leaves, and flowers too! Hundreds of them! I could hardly believe my eyes. It was as though all had been a dream, and I was waking to the true world for the first time.
The Lord's voice sounded close to my ear, and I turned to see him gazing out at the sight as well.
"This...this is my home. This is how it was meant to be. Alive, beautiful. A paradise of night. Would you like for me to show you?"
I frowned, unsure of his meaning as his eyes caught mine and held firm. I felt suddenly very strange, as though caught in a whirlwind of sounds and colors. I saw the castle changing before my very eyes. No longer a darkened shell of cold stone and ancient artifacts, but a glittering gem of a home. Laughter, merriment, memory and life. I blinked once, and it was gone.
A wistful sort of smile stole over his features, but was replaced quickly by an expression that I could not comprehend as he turned away to take his place once more at the fireplace. I hesitated, not sure whether or not to follow as he spoke once again.
"You have fulfilled your purpose. It is your blood that has allowed my home to be reborn anew. For that, I am eternally grateful. A celebration shall take place here in my kingdom, and then..."
Hesitation here? I am not sure. I would say a pause for breath perhaps, yet I know better.
"...and then you are free to return to your home."
He glanced back to me when saying this, as though looking for something in my expression. He may well have searched longer for it, yet a noise at the top of the stairs, and the opening of the wooden doors attracted both our attentions. Apothecarium appeared in the entryway, relief clear on his face as he observed us. I wryly remembered letting him rest as I ventured off, fairly positive that this was the reasoning behind his frantic look. The Lord nodded to him, turning back to the fire.
"Apothecarium, the gala preparations are to be made in haste. Inform the others and see to it that Miss Rose is made presentable. She is the guest of honor, and must look the part."
The servant nodded, gesturing that I follow him. I did this hesitantly, looking back once more at the figure of Ancient Blood and his shadow dancing in the light of the fire before the solid doors closed once more.

Ancient Blood's Thoughts
Ah! My perfect opportunity missed! Apothecarium may be an excellent physician, and he has served me well over the years, yet there are times where I wish nothing more than to rend his spine from his body. Such was the feeling that coursed through me at that moment. Miss Rose stood before me, the golden flames of the kindled fire glinting off of those deep set crimson eyes and giving a rich luster to her cemetery grey coat. The mane and tail also held this glimmer, making the whole of her appearance all the more lovely to behold. Indeed, even as I drank this all in I could feel my tongue loosen, and the secrets in my heart's innermost chambers ready to burst forth from their lodgings. They might have done just that, if not for the timing of Apothecarium's arrival. Damn him, and damn me as well!
All this anger, and yet it is in vain. The moment is passed and it may be best if it never came again.
I have given instructions as to the nature of this celebratory gala. It will take place soon enough in this very room. Already the invitations have been sent, and many others from various kingdoms have promised attendance. I have also taking the liberty of ordering as many guards as can be spared to be present at each door. I will not allow for any misfortune to occur. There have been more than enough of these incidents during Miss Rose's stay here, and I wish for her remaining time to be spent in merrier circumstances. The night will be a joyous one, and then...then she will be gone.

Immortal Rose's Journal
All too soon, the night was upon us.
The grand ballroom shimmered like the central gem in a regal crown, accentuated by the golden candelabra and gleaming chandeliers hanging in their pristine splendor. There was no darkness this night, every corner nook and cranny glittering bright and cheerful. Long tables had been set along the walls and filled with sumptuous offerings of food and drink suitable to every guest's palate. As for the guests, there was a wide range, and not simply creatures of a shadowy origin. From my vantage point high atop the grand staircase I could discern visitors from every race and species under the Equestrian sun. Fellow unicorns of Canterlot gazed about, dressed regally in flowing garments and expensive jewels. Pegasi from far away Cloudsdale fluttered their wings respectfully, obviously pleased by the vaulted ceiling. Indeed, even zebra, giraffe, gazelle, and a few buffalo made their entrances into the castle's interior. I could also discern a few mythological entities that I had carefully observed back in the forests of the Everfree. They all mingled together in cheerful tones, a chorus of jovial conversation rising up and echoing across the alabaster lines halls. I could not help but smile at this sight. Had I not known better, I may have imagined that I was standing in a different land altogether. Perhaps even in attendance of the widely celebrated Grand Galloping Gala of Canterlot Castle. Yes, if only for one night, darkness had receded far away, the shadows of fear and uncertainty not daring to intrude on this uncharacteristic merriment.
Sensing a presence at my side, I turned to see Ancient Blood surveying the crowd as I had been only moments earlier.
"A wonderful turn out for such an impromptu affair, wouldn't you agree?"
I could only nod, bowing to the Lord. Already an imposing figure to begin with, the perfect elegance of his immaculate scarlet brooch and silken cravat made his appearance all the more regal. I could not help but feel as though a commoner in my rather plain dressings of flowers and lace. With a slight stammer, I attempted to make a sufficient answer.
"Y-Yes, My Lord. I am quite surprised as well."
To save myself from further embarrassment, I turned once again to observe those down below.
A few ponies close to the food tables chattered nonchalantly, lifting glasses in toast and laughing at the antics of a familiar fellow that had taken too much wine. Many others danced gracefully across the reflective surface of the ballroom floor, weaving around each other as Arcane Sonata led an orchestrated symphony. I saw the two I had met earlier, Lazorus and Licorice, among them, giggling in childish delight as they danced together.
Apothecarium contented himself to remain near the roaring fireplace, cautiously observing some of the groups in the hall. These such groups kept quietly to themselves, and I could not help but feel they were not exactly mortals either. A quiet clearing of the Lord's throat brought my attention back to him. He seemed quite ill at ease, such as I have never seen him before. His usually calm and penetrative gaze wandered from me and to the nearby banister before finding a spot on the floor.
"You..look quite lovely, Miss Rose. That is, it is a relief to see you well and at ease once again. I.. I do trust your pain has ebbed?"
I winced, yet only in remembrance of the way the wounds had been obtained, quickly finding my voice once more.
"Yes, thank you.. I feel back to myself once more. It does my heart glad to see such cheerfulness in your kingdom. It feels more...lively. Similar to what you had shown me."
Maybe a smile? I could not be certain, for Arcane's composition had ended and the crowd below stamped their hooves in applause before he began another piece. Soft, and melodic. The couples upon the floor took their places, swaying with each other slowly as they turned circles on the polished tile.
I felt Ancient Blood's form move somewhat closer, brushing past me as he began descending the grand staircase. After a few steps, he turned back, giving a flourishing bow.
"Miss Rose, will you do me the honor?"
I blinked, confused for several moments before feeling a burning color rushing to my cheeks.
"Forgive me, but I was never taught how to properly dance."
My reluctance seemed to only reassure him, returning to his normal ease and fluid nature. A light laugh shook from him as he held a hoof to escort me down the high steps.
"This will not do. You must be instructed immediately. Follow my lead, and you shall learn."
As there was clearly no other choice set before me, I reluctantly allowed him to lead the way down to the ground floor, and carefully in between the spinning couples. As soon as a suitable location near the center was established, he offered another bow, I following suit. He then drew close, showing me the correct positions for my fore hooves and hind hooves, detailing how the movement was a flowing, graceful circling with small variations and the changes of music. Thus, the dance had begun. He moved gracefully as one would expect of nobility, and even though my attempts were clumsy, I could feel others pausing in their revolutions to watch. Clearly his sheer mastery of the art had more than made up for my lacking, and I felt myself caught up within the majesty of it all. He lowered his head, and I did the same as our horns touched, tip to tip as we moved. I began matching his steps, feeling a little more at ease as he smiled in approval. I returned a smile of my own, relaxing in the spell of Arcane's music. Clearly he was as gifted in the art as the Lord in dance, for the rhythm needed nothing of time nor transition as the waltz continued. Yet as all things must, the song reached it's final chords and faded into silence, the now sizable crowd surrounding us echoing with applause. Ancient Blood bowed once more and I did the same, turning to meet his eyes as I raised myself up once more.
His eyes however, were fixed pointedly on something behind me. His expression though, made my heart sink, and whatever color was left to drain entirely. The Lord himself looked much the same way as I had felt, eyes wide in disbelief and hinting at anger. Very slowly, I turned to search for what it was that held his gaze so markedly.
Directly behind me, making his way through a now murmuring crowd was none other than Nicolae. A burning sensation coursed though my throat at his approach, the dark stallion grinning with his yellow eyes, a smirk writhing over his visage as he finally paused before us and gave a mocking bow.
"May I cut in?"

Time: The night of the Gala
Location: The Grand Ballroom
From my point of observation near the ballroom's central fireplace, I could see a gloom descending upon the twirling figures even as Arcane's song still hung in the air. The applause was cheerful as Miss Rose and the Lord took their bows. They were still blissfully unaware of the presence that approached from behind, overpowering and malicious, until it was much too late. Even as I had started forward from my position, I could see a great overwhelming blackness rising up from beneath Nicolae, seeming to emerge from his shadow to ensnare the three within it's grasp. The whole attitude of such was akin to a great wall of thorny vines closing in to asphyxiate a blossoming flower. An instant more, and they had vanished. A great gasp erupted from the startled onlookers who continued to gape at the empty spot as though the three would emerge once more at any moment. All the same, I hurried over to where they had gathered, pushing aside the still shocked patrons. Lazorus and Licorice had been close by, the latter in a swoon as her partner strained to keep her from falling. Arcane had descended from the orchestra's platform, the still wobbling Malphas following close behind. We all looked to one another, attempting to ascertain the nature of the occurrence and the location to where they may have gone when a shrill cry from a fellow onlooker arrested our attention. We turned to behold the guest who was pointing out one of the wide windows with a look of urgency. I turned as well, peering out into the night to gaze upon the castle's courtyard and the blossoming garden enclosed there.
Amidst the flowering vines, the two figures of the Lord Ancient Blood and Nicolae faced off in what I could only describe as a deadly dance. Such was the grace with which both moved over the ground, aiming beams of magical energy at each other only to follow up and parry with their horns. Each clash of these brought forth a blinding flash and sent the spectacle into a multitude of colors before fading once more into the gloom of the surrounding night. I could just discern the figure of Miss Rose a small distance from the two. She was fully conscious, I was relieved to find, and she stood firmly, eyes wavering indecisively. She glanced at the two figures with unease, as though uncertain whether to rush forward or remain out of their reach. Thus far, her decision remained with the latter, and that was likely best. I turned to Arcane and the others, nodding with an unspoken agreement before we made our way out of the room and into the night.

Immortal Rose's Journal
Nicolae's appearance had been sudden, and our removal to the garden even more so. I had hardly regained my composure and footing when I saw the Lord and Nicolae locked in a duel. I had never before seen a confrontation of my own kind, only the scuffles of the entities I had studied in the wild. This fight was much different in comparison. It did not hold the clumsy lunges of the territorial or feral, yet it was altogether more frightening in it's calm execution. Both parties were skilled in their magics, and no doubt taught from an early age the finely tuned dance of their ancestors and what it could mean in their birthrights as a way to usurp the throne. I vaguely wondered if this was how a successor was chosen of their kind as I watched. A carefully placed thrust from Nicolae's horn caused a small wound to Ancient Blood, and I felt myself inclined to attempt aid. This, yet hesitation. If I were to act rashly in this manner, I would only become a nuisance or worse, a liability to the Lord that could cost him the battle. I debated as I watched them lunge and parry, listening to the words that accentuated their warring spells.
"Did I not tell ye, brother? Was I wrong in mine predictions? It did work! The land hast become whole and it is through her blood. Think of it, brother, think what else it wouldst be capable of! Join me, and we shall rule eternal in blood and night."
Here, Nicolae sent a venomous green bolt of light crashing to the earth. Vines sprung up and threatened to bind the lord, who slashed through it with his horn before leaping up to send a crimson beam in retaliation.
"You have hurt her enough, brother! Leave her be, avenge yourself if you must, but on me instead! How much more of your vengeance will you force her to suffer? Does she need to die before you will be satisfied?!"
Nicolae dodged the attack, lifting himself high up on a nearby pillar to become but a silhouette against the moon, all but his eyes dissipating into smoky dusk and only those orbs of flame burning brightly as though to incinerate any unfortunate thing that dare meet his gaze.
"Yes! A thousand times yes, dear brother! No mortal will ever suffer near that which I shall make her suffer! And mark my words, Blood, she shall live to see the end of it. I shall drain her very soul if I must, body, mind, blood all to waste! Till she cry out for death to have mercy, beg and plead that I end her. Even then, I have my plans. And thou, thou shalt be he who sends her soul to the pit!"
A peal of laughter rang forth the likes that I have never heard. It was as though the darkest fathoms of hell had opened exclusively for this occasion, and a chorus of demons sang out their curses in one infinite voice. I shudder still to think of it, trembling and nearly falling back upon my haunches at his sinister merriment before his eyes found mine...
Ancient Blood's Thoughts
I shall never during the rest of my timeless existence forget the way my brother's eyes alighted upon Miss Rose. His words toward me had been horrible enough to stomach, but this... this was unforgivable. His golden eyes, strange even to the rest of my kind, gleamed in relation to his intent. I could hear the rumbling build in his throat as he addressed her.
"Shalt thou be mine? Flesh of mine flesh, blood of mine blood? I can make it so. Thine veins have appeased mine thirst before, and it is not but for my magic that thou remainest as the living."
From my view opposite the mare, I felt her shudder even more than saw as she looked up with a mingled expression of fear and horror as well as disgust. She well may have turned away from his mocking speech, save his burning eyes kept an unblinking spell upon her as his voice changed to tones of silk. The words glided from his fanged grin as easily as his tongue slid over a gleaming fang.
"Come to me then, and I shalt make thee, kin of mine kin, into one much greater than a mere mortal's existence. Thou desirest knowledge, dost thou not? I can give that unto thee, the whispering secrets of the shadows, the well kept records of darkness. All this and more, my dear. So much more."
I felt near sick at such lies, turning to regard the mare again with the hopes that she too would see past this ruse. Her upturned eyes were still locked with his in a war of wills, her face becoming pale under the influence of the spoken word. I felt what was left of my dead heart sink as her front hoof lifted to take a step forward.
It is not an easy task by any means to express the inexpressible, and the rushing of thoughts combining with the primal furies and emotions drawn out by this horrendous scene verged on simply that. My vision blurred, eyes narrowing as a pounding hatred shook my very form. I saw all that instant clearly however. Miss Rose entranced by Nicolae's spell was still slowly taking steps toward what would prove a fatal union. There was no doubt of this. And that wretched, vile being of my brother looking all the more smug in his dominance. Involuntary action took hold, and I lunged. He was still high up, yet I crouched, my muscles ready and coiled before leaping as high as I could to join him atop the lone pillar. I would not give him a chance to retaliate. His eyes were still locked on the mare below, not daring for a moment to glance away or even fathoming the grim deed that I must do. Not losing an instant, I lowered my head and thrust my horn in a rapier fashion. It struck true to it's mark, my brother not having the chance to react or even move to defend himself against the crippling blow. I could feel the dead blood welling up, cold and black as it flowed out from his chest down to stain the marble pillar and trickle down to the earth. It was only after I heard his gasping, did I rip my horn free and step back to see the figure now collapsing at my hooves. I dared not remove my eyes from Nicolae, lest he attempt a foolhardy retaliation in his pitiful state, yet I could discern Miss Rose from the corner of my vision, staggering and attempting to wake herself from the rapidly fading trance. My brother coughed, a bit of his blood forcing itself up what was left of his lungs, tainting his lips with the black liquid as he turned his now dull eyes to me in a drained hatred.
"No..this is not all... the end cannot...I will...vengeance..."
He struggled to stand once more, as I brought a hoof down to crush his.
"It is the end, brother. Requiescat in pace."
A fanged smirk, and he dissolved into ashes.
An unnatural wind picked up, howling through the garden as it swept up my brother's remains to carry them off to some unknown resting place. Yet as the last bits of blood and dust were airborne, I could still hear the faint hollow echo of his laughter ringing in the night. A fitting funeral dirge.

Ancient Blood's Thoughts
The whole of the terrible instant must in reality have lasted merely a few minutes, yet the effect upon my body was the drain of centuries. I glanced down from my position upon the pillar to see Miss Rose as before, still slightly off balance as she attempted to shake off the rest of my deceased brother's spell. I too felt quite weak as I descended, Apothecarium and the others visible in the distance and hurrying toward us in concern. Neither I nor the mare spoke to each other as they arrived, for there was nothing to be said. In fact, I could scarce believe that her eyes occasionally met mine, nor that she could look still upon me, sullied as I was with the remnants of Nicolae's black blood upon my coat and horn. Still, I asked that the physician lead her back to the main hall for a careful examination, lest any further harm befall the mare in her already susceptible state. He bowed, leading her away as I gave instructions to the others. By this time a rather large crowd of the guests had assembled, gaping at the scene of the spectacle with unspoken questions upon their tongues. Seeing as any of these would be difficult to answer, I thanked each for their presence and apologized for the abrupt end to the festivities before bidding Arcane and Malphas to escort the gala attendees back to the castle, peradventure to their own homes. All this was done with minimal thought, as my mind was still with Rose, and I could not help but glance every now and again to the path she had taken with Apothecarium minutes earlier.
It was only when the last of the stragglers had left the garden, and only a few others mingled while awaiting their transportation home did I return once more to the ballroom. Lazorus and Licorice had already busied themselves with the removing of plates and general cleaning, Arcane returning his beloved instruments to their places. Malphas was much himself again, attempting to convince a young mare to take a stroll, and the fireplace sparking with the last of the dying embers. I casually drew near to this, finding solace in gathering my thoughts among the warmth here.
Warmth. Ironic that one so cold as I should be drawn to the very opposites of my nature. Still, I allowed myself to venture into my mind, all else around me becoming a dull echo as the shades of orange flickered and cast unnatural shadows in an unnatural land. The dim resonance of the faded voices continued in their humming, interrupted here and again by the soft tones of Miss Rose's voice. I did not need to turn in order to know her location. She was near one of the banisters of the staircase, Apothecarium questioning about her well being. Each response given was a positive one, and I felt my heart lighten with relief. Thinking back, it could be that this soothing voice kept me afloat in the dark waters of introspection, and I smile to think of it as such. I closed my eyes for a moment, savoring the voice, warmth and relief felt after the close of a mystery. The weight and anxiety of former matters seemed so trivial now that I almost laughed. In fact, I may have done so if not for remembering my current location and the present company. I could well have stayed in this state for the remainder of my existence, yet a presence close by urged me back to the present.
I glanced back, slightly annoyed by the intrusion into my solitude, and perceived a pegasus of an indigo hue. His mane was rather short, possibly a guest from Cloudsdale. He must have sensed my acknowledgement of his close proximity as he spoke.
"You do know that no matter what, she won't be safe, right? There will always be someone somewhere seeking power. Today, your brother; tomorrow, another."
I frowned, turning away from the stranger to stare once more at the last of the flames. Partially in anger at his words, as well as hoping to hide my astonishment. Who this was, I did not know. Yet such impudence in his speech, as though he could read the struggle that had been taking place in my mind all along. Regaining some semblance of composure, I responded.
"You seem to know quite a bit for a mere guest, yet by scent alone, I know I have never met you. Therefore let me give you fair warning: do not interfere in that which does not concern you."
I emphasized my words with what I had hoped was a marked step away from the prying stallion. He obviously did not understand this, or if it was understood, it was also ignored.
"The story of your kingdom is well known in this land. The lifting of a curse, the rose and the blood of it? I know this tale all too well. I simply do not wish to see a happy ending turn into a tragedy, and the last petal fall. Besides, you know this as well as I do."
The pegasus shrugged, and I saw his eyes find Miss Rose across the room as he spoke again.
"Her blood has power, lots of it. Word of your broken curse has already made it's way elsewhere. Others are sure to come looking for the rose, and the power of it. After all, if a few drops of blood can do all this, just imagine what all of it could accomplish? Then you also need to consider those who wish to corrupt it, and the blood. Your brother tried this, didn't he?"
I felt a shudder run through me that I could not suppress. His speech had been nearly identical to my brothers, and this last allusion to him could not be dismissed. I could still see the gleam in Nicolae's cold eyes as Miss Rose moved closer under his influence. That others would attempt similar or worse was nearly too much to imagine. My silence prompted another remark from the pegasus as he shrugged and turned away.
"But what would I know? After all, I'm only a wanderer."
Not another word from him as he made his way out of the hall with the final guests.
Still, I knew all too well that he was right. This land was not safe for her. Even if I stayed ever vigilant at her side, my presence may only worsen matters for her. My previous words to Apothecarium drummed away in my head.
'A union with the damned? No. The land is removed of it's curse, yet mine must forever remain...' A heavy sigh ripped through my chest, but I knew what must be done. The last of the flames in the fireplace died away as I approached where Apothecaruim and Miss Rose still sat. They looked up at my advance, the physician wisely excusing himself as I turned to regard the young mare.
"Miss Rose, might I have a word?"
She nodded ascent, and I led her once more to the garden.

Apothecarium's Notes
Time: The Final Night
Location: The Grand Ballroom
Unfortunate fate, relentless destiny. What must be must be, I understand that. Still, no farewells must be said. All I can do is silently wish for the best as she gives me one last smile. The Lord turns to me again. A dark glare. Silence has him now. I can see it in his brooding countenance. The darkness will continue, and he will not but embrace it. Ah, if only she could know. Yet there is a darkness in this land, one that even the lifting of a curse cannot vanquish. The Lord is wise in his decisions, even if he loathes what must be. He is a being of solitude, as are we all. His heart is dead, and I fear it may grow even colder with her departure. Miss Rose truly was the light in this dark kingdom, and even as she has exited outside with Ancient Blood, I can feel the shadows slowly taking their place once again. It seems this land will never be a happy one, yet how can a land be happy when it's history is built upon the blood and tears of the innocent? Once more I shall return to my duties and put this small glimpse of happiness in memory. I will have my hopes though, and who knows? Maybe there will come a time when Miss Rose will return. If so, I pray it is soon, lest this kingdom be lost to darkness' design and the Lord become the very image of his brother.

And here in the night, this was the moment which I had been waiting for. The last chance I would ever be granted to express that which I could not even understand. The emotion within the darkest portion of my heart that threatened to consume my whole being at any given instant. I had, as we were exiting the ballroom, been careful to give a warning glare to Apothecarium and the others. If any interruption was presented at this point, I cannot rightly say what my anger would do. Thus, it was with a trembling air that we made our way to the garden's depths. In my mind I had been careful to rehearse this speech down to the punctuation. Where to stand, what tone to use. Confound these mortal emotions! Must they infect even a kind so cold and heartless as I? There is not even tears enough left in me to weep, let alone enough blood to pour from an aching heart. Why then must I allow such tortures to wrack my very soul? In fact, had I any nerve left within me, I would have stopped this foolishness. I may well have done this, as I glanced back to the mare. Ah, but those eyes. Such a gentle spirit and deep concern showing through those lustrous spheres the likes of which have never been. A single glance, and my resolve was shattered. Why did she look thus? I was not myself, that much was true, yet I could not help wondering what she saw. What thoughts had formed in her mind of our journey back to the garden? I turned away again, pressing further to the deepest corner, a grassy knoll where the others would not find us, and interruption would not be a concern. Only then did I return my eyes to her searching gaze and take a drawn out breath for stalling purposes. The rest of the flowers had blossomed, the crimson petals delicate and silken in the light of the pure moon.
"Miss Rose... truly, I am eternally within your debt. I repeat myself yes, yet you have held true to your promise, and restored the land. Not merely this, all parts of the curse are no more. And the others...they were lively in your presence. I have seen smiles from them that have not been in centuries. You have changed us all. For the better I believe..."
My train of thought was failing under her patient gaze, so I attempted another vein.
"I'm afraid you cannot deny it, nor can I. You are the Rose, as surely as I stand here. Your blood..your power.... the land is full of it. And it is clear to others as well. My...my brother was only the first....and I have little doubt that others will follow in search of the blood, your blood and the power it contains. We cannot run from memory, for it will never fade. Nor can we hide who we are. I am deeply sorry for this, and I hope you will understand. There are worse out there. . those who will abuse, corrupt, more than I wish to burden your mind with. These entities are not like those of your realm. They will stop at nothing. They shall hunt until death, and I am not positive if I can stop them."
My pleading visage showed in her wide eyes, and to detail any further would be to frighten her unnecessarily. Even now I could see her tremble in the grasp of fear. I moved forward, wishing for nothing more than to embrace her, hold her warm body to mine and swear protection from all. There had to be a way. The pegasus may be wrong. I was strong enough, I could do it....
Again those accursed words: 'A union with the damned? No. The land is removed of it's curse, yet mine must forever remain...'
No.... I could not bind her to a life of suffering and constant threat. Still, I dared to pull her close, embracing the mare before me in a gentle form of affection. It was enough. I could offer no such grand promises as I had hoped. She still trembled in my hooves for a few moments longer, and I cursed the cold of my flesh. Still, these shudders grew less pronounced with the passage of time before stopping altogether. I felt Miss Rose relax, leaning her head against my shoulder. All the events of that night seemed to have finally caught up with her, and I could sense a fatigue stealing over her as she rested. Placing my snout against her mane, I began once more in a whisper.
" I will keep your secrets, as will those that have met you, Miss Rose. You are very dear to us, and we shall defend you until the last. I took a gamble this night, not just with my life but yours as well. For that I am more remorseful than you could know. I could well have damned us both. I would not care for myself, for I am already one of the damned. Death and life are all the same to me, and yet.. you... I...."
My hoof gently pulled her chin up as I leaned back to better see her eyes. She knew. I understood finally my own emotions and she already knew them as well as I. Her deep crimson eyes met mine, a few tears threatening to fall. Her pure heart, saddened. If my heart could beat, I know it would have then. I leaned down to meet her lips, pausing at the sweetness of her breath.
A sigh.
'Union with the damned.'
Pulling back, I touched my horn to hers and allowed my eyes to close.
"It is too late, for the path is chosen. Farewell, my Immortal Rose."
The winds picked up, the sad song of the dead as the petals swirled about us. A glow of magic, and then she was gone. I had upheld my promise and returned her to her home.
Turning back once more, I beheld my Kingdom. Even in the beauty of new life, it was lifeless. Dark and menacing as it was meant to be, as I was meant to be. Yet all the same, I could not but close my eyes once more to keep the memories fresh. The petals still danced, as we had danced. If not we, maybe they could find happiness in our stead.

Immortal Rose's Journal
The soft grass of the Everfree greeted me that night as I found myself once more sprawled upon the forest floor. With some effort I stood, looking about the area to ascertain that these were in fact, my whereabouts. They were. No longer was the castle visible, or my companion. They had both vanished without a trace as if it were all a dream from the very beginning. The sky was overcast, long shadows following small glimpses of the moon as it struggled to break free from obscurity. It was during one of these passes where the celestial splendor is revealed in the heavens, that I caught sight of a small object being hidden in the tall grass by night's shadow, and now unearthed by that merciful light. I ventured to examine this, lifting it to better determine it's shape.
His. It was his. Before me was the pendant belonging to Ancient Blood. The cross of silver and the crystal roses. I could not suppress the faint smile that stole over my lips at that moment, nor can I even now when on occasion I glimpse it among my belongings as I continue my sojourn through the Everfree. A token of remembrance, and perhaps more.
It has been one year since that time. One year and not a day over since I left the land of blood and roses. No trouble has come to me from that land since then, and there is little if any knowledge in this land that speak of roses and immortality. This is all for the best, I am sure. Yet I wonder on such nights as this, when the full moon shimmers off the pendant as it rests around my throat; do they still think of me in that place? Does my name still escape in the flurry of conversation there, as it has happened more than once on occasion here? It is with a fondness and warmth of heart that I remember my brief stay in the castle and my time within that realm. I may never return there, yet I constantly hope that the land of blood and night will continue to flourish, and that the roses blossom eternal.

Ancient Blood's Musings
Ah, such foolishness on my part. It seems that in my endeavor to inform my young guest of the very real and near danger that may well send her to a hurried grave, I may have done just that. I saw her become ghastly pale behind her cemetery grey coat, her eyes wide with realization of my grim statement. She started, rigid in fright's vice-like grip; before the limpness of forced repose took claim and she sank against the floor of my chamber.
There was no time to call for assistance on the part of the guards.
I lifted her slight form upon my own, setting her back down upon the ornate lounging sofa. Apothecarium must have heard my silent call, for he readily appeared; a specter in his own right. My staff is few, even more so of those whom I trust. He is one of them. Not a word passed between us, yet it was known what I required. He stepped over to better examine Miss Rose and to gain a better understanding of the circumstance, In the self-same quietude, he produced a vial from a satchel at his side and set it under her nose. The proper effect registered, and the patient stirred.
With a solemn nod, Apothecarium stated that all was well, and vanished without a trace.
I turned back for my own examination of Miss Rose, and saw that her breathing was even and a semblance of color had returned to her features. She remains at the present within a daze, and I dare not speak again until she is more alert. Even as I sit close by to write, I have not removed my focus to allow for any relapse. Her heart is strong, and the beat of it resounds loudly to my attuned ears. The rush of blood through veins, pulsing through the mortal circulatory system. All is well for the moment, and I dare not draw attention to the spot of crimson upon the ground.
Miss Rose must have fallen heavily enough to cause a small injury to herself, and the spot upon the floor carries it's own gleam of hope. A small sprout of vine has sprung up out of the lifeblood, a crimson bud beginning to blossom.
Is this what Nicolae wished to convey unto me? Do I even possess the will to cultivate such theory further....?

Apothecarium's Notes

Location: Unimportant.
It was quite the oddity to see parchment and ink upon the Lord's desk. He who had once spoke to me that such as my own writing was folly in this land. This conversation of so many years ago. Yet I have written on. I have documented everything in this kingdom. Therefore, why stop now?
Regarding Miss Rose:
This has been my very first meeting of the mare that holds such interest to my Lord; if it can even be termed a proper meeting. She is young, yet I am told wise beyond her years. It is quite easy to see that she would be the incarnation of the Rose's spirit. I have made it habit to study and restudy the volumes in the library. Myth, legend, as well as every illness or demise documented here. I am doctor in this place: soother of wounds, provider of medicines. If I were not as well vered in my profession as possible, I'd likely be as all who have come before. Deceased. Death at the hooves of others.
Ah, but I am off topic.
Miss Rose is the exact duplicate of her namesake. From the dark crimson of the iris to the mane of moonlight's purity. In my brief examination it was simple to see her weakness. Frail as a foal in her mortality, yet the weakness extends further. Be it from birth or developed after adolecense, I remain uncertain; yet without the flower of Immortality, her years would most certainly not be long in the land of the living.
Death lays it's claim quickly, does it not? Often taking what is not ready, and always doing so in unexpected swiftness. Yet, if Death's gaze upon the mare were as sharp, keen as the Lord's; well, these words would need not be penned in the first, and my meeting would be posthumous.
Ah, the ill-fated timing of the Lord's call. I shall return hastily.

Now, where was I?
The Lord had summoned me once more into his chambers to examine a spot of blood upon the floor. The mare herself was not present, yet the crimson stain most assuredly spoke of her. A sprouting blossom rose forth from the miniature pool; and I was asked to gather it up for a more accurate analysis of it's structure. I did so, inquiring as to where he had sent the unwilling, or more accurately, unaware donor. He replied, speaking of how he aided her return to her own chambers, posting guards at the doors. A most wise judgment. I sought no further knowledge as to the most current state of things. I know better. For now, I have my task and that is enough. I shall work swiftly.
Apothecarium's Notes

Location: The Crystal Room
Miracle! It must be a miracle. How else is one to explain the complete cessation of life and the return of a renewed vitality?
I have made a full examination of Miss Rose as she remained seated upon the altar, taking careful and especially close examination of the area that I had earlier bandaged and where the death wound was located. Even thought the cloth itself was stained with blood, there was no gaping hole upon the mare. In the place of the dagger's mark was only a scar. I set my hoof close to it in order to better examine this strange phenomenon, and she flinched, cringing from my touch in a way solely similar to the mark that had been upon her throat.
While I made all these observations, performing a complete physical of my patient, the Lord stood silently close at hoof. I glanced toward him on occassion, watching his eyes dart between the quite solid blade which lay glittering upon the stone floor, and then to gaze with concern at Miss Rose. The rapid changes in his expressions intrigued me. First, a disbelief that his grim deed had occurred in the first place, then a silent fury at Nicolae's interference; anger toward himself, and relief that all was well at present. All this, and yet something more which I still cannot rightly place. HIs eyes seemed wide and earnest as he approached, opening his mouth to speak. Words failed him however, and he would turn away to gather himself once more. This behavior continued a few times until he finally turned to me as I finished my examination.
"Escort Miss Rose away from this ghastly place. Surely she has spent enough time here within these walls. See to it that she is shown more pleasant things. The Grand Hall, the Library, the Music Room, anything but this place. I shall seal it up myself if I must, yet she shall never need to return here."
That is all. No words toward Miss Rose, herself. Simply the command left to me. The Lord stayed behind as I aided the young mare in ascending the many stairs. We journey now toward the livelier section of the castle, if livelier can be a term applied here. Perhaps I will show her the Music Hall. We are quite near that wing, and I hear a faint tune coming from within.
