A Story About A Literature Club
Welcome to the Literature Club!
Load Full StoryI don’t know why I decided to sit down and write this. Maybe because I was bored and decided to do something different, maybe because I’m upset at myself for not doing any writing for the past couple of months… Whatever it was, it doesn’t matter now. Here I am, sitting in my comfortable chair in a dimly lit room with my desk light on, my laptop open with a google doc on screen, the cursor blinking on screen, ready to write down whatever crazy thoughts might go through my head while I write this.
I give a long sigh, rubbing my eyes as I stare at the screen. It really has been some time since I’ve done this, but I’m doing it now. Not sure if anyone else will agree with my ideas and shit, but I don’t care now. I just want to write this story. I NEED to write this story. I lay my fingers on the keyboard, readying myself as I see the sentences form inside my head, ready to be typed. “Here we go…” I quietly say to myself as I type the first line onto the page…
“Heya!”
I groan slightly as I look down the street to see the smiling face of Pinkie running towards me, waving her hands in the air, not caring about the attention she was drawing to herself in the neighborhood. “Wait for me!” She cried as she ran towards me. It was the same every day. I would be walking to school, ready for the day, and she would be running towards me, most of the time being late. I don’t know why she is. She tells me it’s because that she always wakes up late in the mornings.
“Then get yourself an alarm clock,” I said to her when she explained it to me in our first year of high school. “I can’t always be there to wake you up.”
She taps her fingers together. “Then I wouldn’t have you there to start my day…” She said with a frown in which I only sigh.
I shake my head at the memory as she finally manages to catch up to me. “Hey…” She said, smiling while panting. “I… Managed to catch you…”
“Only because I let you,” I replied.
“Oh, you wouldn’t just leave me.” She said, looking at me.
“I was thinking about it.”
“You meanie…”
I take a moment to sit back and look at what I wrote. Why does this feel… familiar? The story is going down this path that I’ve set, but it feels as if I’ve seen this before. I shake my head and continue writing.
“You really need to start waking yourself up on time, Pinkie. I’m not always going to be there for you, you know.” I tell her as we walk towards campus together.
She nods, acknowledging my comment, though it didn’t feel like she was really listening to it. “So…” She taps her fingers again. “Have you decided what you’ll be joining?”
I look at her, confused. “What? What are you talking about?”
“A club. You said that this year, you would look into joining a club.” She explained. I looked at her, slightly confused.
“I promised no such thing…” I said to her.
She let out a loud ‘huff’, puffing out her chest. “Did you forget the promise you made me?” She said, staring at me. I looked at her for a few more moments…
Then it hit me like bricks. I do remember! At the beginning of the school year, I promised Pinkie that I would look into joining a club on campus instead of spending all my time on games and anime. She was worried that if I continued down this path, I wouldn’t be prepared for the reality of college life and all that. I swear, sometimes this pony worries about my own health more than her own.
I sighed. “No, I haven’t found a club yet. I’m just… Am not interested.” I said to her.
She frowns at me. “I know that you enjoy your alone time, but you really should spend some time doing other things…” She said, her eyes not making contact with mine. The way she looked, it was pathetic, but it made me feel sorry for her.
“Okay. I understand. I’ll… Look again. Maybe I’ll find something that will interest me.” I said to her, which caused her to brighten up.
“Okay!” She said, beaming me a bright smile. I sighed. Why do I sometimes feel powerless around her?
There was a loud ringing and we both looked at each other, worried. “We’re late!” Then, in a mad sprint, both me and Pinkie ran for the entrance of the school.
I sit back again, looking at what I’ve written once again. I swear, this is so familiar to me, but I don’t know why. It’s nothing special, just a story. I scoot closer to my desk and rest my hands on the keyboard once again, getting ready to start typing again, but I stop for a moment. Something in the story had caught my eye for a moment, but whatever it quickly vanished. I didn’t get a good glimpse at what it was… But I swear I saw a bit of yellow…
I shake my head. It’s probably just my head messing with me. My current lighting wasn’t ideal for my eyes, but I was too busy to get up and make any changes to my surroundings, so if I’m seeing things, I will have to suffer through. I return to the screen and begin to write again.
The final bell for the day rang loudly through the entire school as students all around me got up from their seats, ready to go home. However, I continued to sit in my seat, staring ahead of me. My mind was currently running through the thought of joining a club, or, to be more correct, which club I should join. I’ve seen flyers for all the different clubs the school has to offer and, truthfully, none of them really interested me. Maybe there’s a club for anime?
My thoughts were interrupted as a soft ‘ahem’ broke me from my trance. I look up to see Pinkie standing in front of me, smiling. “Hey, you alright?”
I blink a couple of times, then nodded. “Yeah, just thinking.”
“About?”
“What club I might join… Though I’m having a hard time finding one I want to.” I said to her, frowning slightly. “What are you doing here?”
“Well, I was waiting outside the classroom for you, hoping to catch you. But then I saw that you were just sitting here by yourself, staring at the wall.” She said. I gave her a quizzical look and scoped the room, realizing that it was just me and her here. Everyone else had already left. I sighed, realizing how stupid I must have looked just sitting in a room by myself. Pinkie giggled in response.
“Why were you waiting for me? Aren’t you normally at your club by now?” I asked her.
Pinkie was Vice President of the school’s only literature club, which surprised me when I found out. When I think of Pinkie, I don’t normally see her taking on such responsibility, but in the end, she always manages to surprise me with how much she can dedicate to certain things. Only wish she could show the same dedication to herself…
“Yeah, but I wanted to see what you were doing…” She said, pressing her fingers together.
“Why?”
“Well…” She looked at me, a bit nervous. “I was figuring that if you hadn’t found a club yet… Maybe you could come check out the Literature Club…” She said, giving me a face that said more than she was letting on.
I give her the look of curiosity. “What are you hiding?”
She steps back, surprised. “N-nothing!” She said with a slight stammer, which was a sign to me that there was something. I only stared at her, unmoving, until she sighed. “Alright… I might have promised that… Maybe I would bring in… A new member today…” She said, giving me a weak smile.
I sighed, realizing what she’s done. “You didn’t really have someone to bring, did you?” She looked down at the floor and shook her head. I looked at her for a few more seconds before finally giving in. “Fine…” I said. “I’ll come check out your club.”
She looked up at me, giving me the biggest smile ever, her entire face lighting up. “REALLY?!” She then hugged me, squeezing me into her embrace. “Oh, Thank you!”
“Pinkie! Too tight!” I complain, getting her to lessen her grip.
“Oops. Sorry!” She said, smiling. “I just… Can’t believe that you're agreeing! I seriously thought you would say no.”
“I was seriously thinking about it…” I commented, which caused her to let me go and stare at me with a pout.
“You meanie!”
I sit back once again, not sure why, but feeling a bit… I’m not sure how to put it in words, but it just doesn't feel right. This story. I’ve seen it before, but where? Why am I always getting this feeling of… Uneasiness? I take a deep breath and try to wash away the feeling with a drink of water, then I return to my writing…
Pinkie led me to the third floor of the school. I’m completely unfamiliar with the floor since it’s mostly used for upperclassmen classes and activities. It wasn’t much different from the rest of the school, though. Not really special in any way. Pinkie walked up to one of the doors on the right side of the hall and opened the door, walking in before me. The room was like the classrooms that I’ve been in before. Rows of desks that lead towards the front of the room where the teacher’s desk is, the chalkboard hanging behind it. I quickly looked around the room and saw a couple more people in here.
“Hey, I brought our newest member!” Pinkie said excitedly, causing me to look at her, confused. But before I could get a word, there was a scoff from behind. Turning around, I faced a girl of similar size to Pinkie, though a bit more thin and with a mess of rainbow-colored hair. She stood there with her arms crossed, staring at me. I looked at her, a bit confused as she was unfamiliar to me.
Then I felt the presence of someone else behind me and turn once again, noticing the pink haired female standing there, quite. When she saw me look her way, she turned her head, hiding her face behind her hair. She was a bit taller than Pinkie and quite slender.
“Uh… Pinkie. You didn’t say that the member you were bringing was going to be a boy…” The pink haired girl said to Pinkie.
“Yeah. You kinda are messing up the atmosphere here…” The other said, walking past me.
“I know, Dashie, but… I figured it would be a nice surprise!” She replied, beaming at the two girls a bright smile.
The one named Dashie, who I came to find out that her real name was Rainbow Dash, just scoffed at me before looking around the room. “Where’s Twilight, anyway? She was supposed to be here by now…”
At that moment, the door behind me opened rather quickly as yet another young female entered the room. “Sorry that I’m late! I got caught up with a few things!” She said, looking at the others. Then her eyes laid on me and she gave me a smile. “Oh, hi! You must be the new member Pinkie was bringing!” She said. “Welcome to the Literature Club!”
