Sunburst's Question

Spring had arrived in Canterlot and the spirits of the students were beginning to brighten. Not only were the temperatures starting to warm up, the end of the school year was in sight. That was not the only thing that was in sight though, the Spring Formal, the biggest dance of the school year was also in sight and while the couples had already made plans to go with one another, some of the singles were hoping to attract a date so maybe they could find a relationship themselves.

Another Friday afternoon had arrived and the students were headed home for a weekend free of the stresses involved in school. Like they always do, Starlight and Trixie headed out of the school, arm in arm and hand in hand talking about the plans they had for the weekend. Walking right behind them was a student who couldn't keep his eyes off one of the girls in front of him, Sunburst.

Heading down the stairs on most afternoons was a challenge but it was even more so on Fridays since every student crowded the stairs in their desperation to get home. Sunburst never was one for crowds but when he got bumped from behind, he stumbled forward and knocked the two girls in front of him down.

The crowd stopped moving so that the girls would have the space they needed to get up. Once they had got up the two girls gave Sunburst a scowl and one said, "Watch where you're going, you could have hurt us."

The other added, "And you don't want to know what The Great and Powerful Trixie would do if you hurt her bestie Starlight!"

Both girls grunted and began to walk away before Sunburst got their attention, "Starlight, wait!"

The girls turned around and with the same scowl they had earlier, Starlight grunted, "What?"

Sunburst asked, "Well I was kind of hoping that we could talk."

Starlight pointed over towards the horse statue and replied, "Well make it quick and let's get out of everyone's way."

Sunburst nodded and followed the girls. He couldn't help but keep his eyes on Starlight but also watched both with a curious look on his face as they had their arms around one another. Once they were out of everyone's way Starlight glared at him and asked, "What? What is it you want?"

Sunburst was a rather shy individual and had never interacted with Starlight before. He began, "Well my name is Sunburst....."

Starlight grunted, "Who?"

Trixie laughed, "He's one of the nerds that are always up in the front row dutifully taking notes in physics class."

Starlight sighed, "Oh." She then turned to Sunburst and ordered, "Look, Trixie and I want to get away from this place as quickly as possible so state your business and make it quick."

Sunburst could tell that Starlight was less than thrilled and became more nervous than normal. He was a bit afraid to ask Starlight what he wanted to but knew that if he didn't do it then, that he may not do it at all. He asked, "Well, as you kn-know, the Spring Formal is coming up and, and I was won-wondering if you'd go with me?"

Starlight tightened her hold on Trixie and laughed, "You're joking, right? I don't even know you and you want me to go with you to some dumb dance?"

Sunburst could tell that this was likely not going to go the way he wanted but then something crossed his mind, "I know you don't know me but maybe we could go out some......"

Starlight interrupted, "No, Trixie and I have plans."

Sunburst gasped, "But you don't even know when......"

Trixie pointed her finger in his face and snapped, "Look, The Great and Powerful Trixie and Starlight always have plans, always."

Sunburst pleaded, "Please Starlight, I want to get to know...."

Starlight, like Trixie, pointed her finger in his face and snapped, "What part of no don't you get? Are you stupid or something?"

The two had no desire to deal with him any further so they turned their backs and started to walk away. To send Sunburst a clear message that Starlight had no desire to even deal with him, they both planted their hands on the other's butt and walked away. Sunburst hung his head in defeat and realized that unless he did something special to impress her, that his chances of taking her to the dance were zero.

Seeking Advice

Sunburst had been rejected by the girl that he had a crush on and felt terrible about hit. He held his head low and sighed, "Unless I do something to impress her, I don't have a chance with her."

Some of the other students had stayed around to watch his interaction with Starlight and weren't surprised by how it turned out but one student, a student who had been rejected himself, felt bad for him. He approached him and said, "I'm sorry man, I'm sorry it didn't work out."

Sunburst looked up to see who had spoken to him and was shocked by who it was, it was the most popular boy at CHS, Flash Sentry. He asked, "Flash Sentry?"

Flash replied, "Yes, I'm Flash Sentry." He used his hand to lift Sunburst's head up and continued, "Look, I know you want that Starlight girl to like you but I don't think it's going to happen."

Sunburst asked, "Why not? You always have girls flirting with you." His paranoid side began to come out and he thought Sunburst may be insulting him. He continued, "What, you think she wouldn't want me because I'm not attractive, because I don't play the guitar, because I'm not muscular......"

Flash interrupted, "Sunburst, I didn't say that." He paused for a moment before continuing, "I'm saying it probably won't happen because I don't think Starlight is into guys."

Sunburst gasped, "What?" He couldn't comprehend the idea of a girl not being into guys, especially an attractive girl like Starlight.

Flash Saw the look of shock on his face and continued, "Sunburst, just watch how her and Trixie interact. They haven't ever formally came out but everyone at school knows they're an item, everyone knows they're lesbians."

Sunburst asked, "Lesbians, you mean they only like girls?"

Flash replied, "Yes, they only like girls. They are like Lyra and Bon Bon but instead of being subtle about it, those two basically scream it to the world so that everyone knows."

Sunburst at first looked dejected but then something crossed his mind. He asked, "Are there girls who like both girls and boys?"

Flash replied, "Actually yes but when it comes to Starlight, I think it would be best if you cut your losses." He then lowered his voice and continued, "This may surprise you but even I've been shot down."

Sunburst's eyes grew wide as he asked, "Wait a minute, even you have been shot down." He became more calm and continued, "By who?"

Flash replied, "There is this girl, Twilight Sparkle, that I have a major crush on."

Sunburst asked, "Twilight Sparkle? Her and I study together all the time!"

Flash replied, "Yes. Well I asked her out on a date once and she told me that she was too busy studying."

Sunburst sighed, "Yeah, I can understand that." He wanted to get past the small talk and get to what is important. He stood taller and asked, "Alright, what do I need to do to get her attention? What can I do or get for her that girls love?"

Flash could tell that Sunburst wasn't simply going to let this go, he wasn't just going to cut his losses. He replied, "Well a lot of girls like roses and I know some girls who like guys that do things like go on a live stream and sing them songs."

The wheels inside of Sunburst's head began to turn and very quickly he knew what had to be done. He exclaimed, "Of course! I'll get Starlight some roses, that should win her over!"

Before Flash could even respond, Sunburst had taken off. He couldn't help but shake his head in frustration. He obviously had concerns about Sunburst but also had a bad feeling about what Starlight and Trixie might do if he just showed up to school with a bouquet of roses.
