Starlight Glimmer was inside Twilight's castle sitting around in her room while Twilight was looking over old maps. Spike was helping Twilight with some of them as well as he wanted to do something to keep himself busy as there wasn't anything going on that interested him.
Starlight Glimmer heard them talking in their room as she was a few rooms over she felt bored as there was nothing really to do. She groaned in annoyance as she flopped her head down on the bed. She would rather be helping out with a friendship problem than be bored.
As she laid on her bed she thought about Twilight and then she thought of a great idea for her to do. She immediately sat up and looked to the door to her bedroom. She stood up and walked to where Twilight was. She stopped in front of Twilight and Spike as she saw Spike helping Twilight.
"Twilight I'm bored. There's nothing to do here." Starlight complained. Twilight stopped talking to Spike and looked over at Starlight who was standing there with eagerness. Twilight wondered why Starlight couldn't figure out what to do as there was plenty of things to do.
"Why don't you go see our friends? Maybe they need some help with something and if they don't need help then just talk to them." Twilight said. Starlight shook her head.
"I want something challenging something that will be really hard for me to do! I want something to test my knowledge! What about a hard math problem!?" Starlight asked. Twilight pursed her lips in thought. Twilight then got a great idea.
Alright let me go get something then if your going to do that." Twilight said. She went to her education area of books and pulled out a math book she looked through it and then she walked back to Starlight. She pulled out a sheet of paper and wrote down the problems and then she handed paper and utensil to Starlight.
"Solve this division problem. Tell me the remainder as well. If you finish it and your still bored I'll figure something else out for you or give you another problem or suggest you go out and see one of your friends. You said you wanted something difficult so im giving you a hard division problem. Good luck Starlight." Twilight said. Starlight smiled.
"I won't let you down Twilight." Starlight said. Twilight turned back to her maps as she made notes while she examined them. Starlight went to a quiet place with the problems and sat down in her chair
Starlight read the first problem over and she immediately knew that Twilight had delivered her promise on giving her a hard math problem. There was no way to solve this one! She looked it over again and again. She read it aloud.
"What is four hundred and eighty seven divided by thirty two?" Starlight read the question. Starlight immediately doubted herself but then stopped as she knew that she just needed to think about it. Starlight sat back in her chair and thought for a second.
"She will never figure that out. She might as well stay there all night." Spike said. Twilight told him that wasn't nice and told him to give her a chance. Starlight thought about the problem in her head.
Twilight went about doing her work as Starlight tried to solve the problem. Twilight was sure Starlight could solve something as hard as that since Starlight had learned at type of math with her before but she was also aware that it would keep her busy for a while.
Starlight sat there thinking for a bit she didn't want to spend all day on one problem and bedsides it wasn't going to take that long. She looked over the problem as she refused to give up.
She started to have doubts if she could even solve such an advanced problem but she continued to think. Twilight really hoped she could solve it but if Starlight ended up not being able to solve it then she would understand.
Starlight cleared her mind of any doubts as she just thought about the math problem. Twilight wasn't kidding when she said she would find a difficult one for her but she didn't worry about that now as she thought about what to do. Starlight thought about it for a few more seconds and then she had a moment of realization. She wrote it down and turned to Twilight.
"The remainder is seven." Starlight told her. Twilight turned around with a surprised face as she could not believe Starlight solved it that fast.
"There is no way you solved it in that short amount of time. Are you sure you thought about it and looked at everything? You didn't even use a calculator." Twilight asked. Starlight shook her head.
"Of coarse I didn't. I didn't sit down with one and you didn't give one to me by accident. I just thought about it. The answer is fifteen and the remainder is seven." Starlight said. Twilight walked to the table and looked at the problem. Starlight looked at her. Twilight stood up straight and looked at Starlight.
"How did you solve that so fast? This problem takes ten or even twenty minutes to solve and you solved it in under five minutes." Twilight asked her with disbelief Starlight shrugged as she had a simple answer.
"I just thought about it for a few minutes. I was stuck at first but after some thinking the answer was pretty clear." Starlight said as she shrugged.
Twilight stood back and thought about her for a few seconds and when she noticed Starlight giving her an eager expression she snapped out of it.
"I'm not bored anymore Twilight. I think I'm going to hang out with Pinkie Pie. Can I go?" Starlight asked. Twilight nodded her head absentmindedly as she was speechless. Starlight smiled happily an stood up. She kissed Twilight on the cheek and pranced out of the castle.
Twilight just stared at the problem and then looked over at door Starlight went through to leave the castle. Meanwhile Celestia was speaking with advisors and she turned around to see Twilight running up to her shouting her name.
"Celestia you have to see this!" Twilight said as she stopped in front of her. Celestia's advisor warned Twilight not to run through the halls but Twilight ignored the advisor and held out the sheet for Celestia.
"What is this supposed to be?" Celestia asked. Twilight kept holding it out to her and Celestia took the paper and looked at the problem.
"It's a math problem your highness." Twilight answered. Celestia looked at her and shrugged.
"So what?" Celestia said.
"Starlight Glimmer solved it under five minutes." Twilight answered. Celestia looked it over and realized which problem it was and then she looked back over at Twilight.
"Twilight this problem took me over twenty minutes to solve when I was learning math and your saying that Starlight solved this with less than that?" Celestia asked her.
"Yes mam." Twilight asked. Celestia looked at the problem and then looked at Twilight with a shocked expression on her face.
"I can't believe it....she's smarter and quicker than my past students combined when they tried this problem. Most ponies couldn't solve a hard question like this without a calculator in front of them and yet she solved it and took less time to do it out of everybody else." Celestia stated. Twilight nodded with agreement.
"Starlight is a genius." Celestia remarked. Celestia shoved the paper into Twilight's grasp and walked away as Twilight watched as she thought about her response. Twilight continued to stand there as she thought about the future potential of her student and she also thought about the possibility of her student being able to solve other problems as she looked back at the problem as she was still completely shocked. She would have to tell Starlight that she will want to see her try to do other math problems when she got home.
Celestia was right. Starlight was a genius.
