A Garden Is A Tricky Thing To Grow
Chapter 2: "Real Magic"
Previous ChapterNext ChapterSunset Shimmer walked through the empty halls of Canterlot High. By now near everyone else had gone home, even the janitor had seemingly called it quiets. However one rather stubborn girl was still waiting for Sunset in the gym, and the red-haired teen knew better by now then to keep her waiting any longer then she had to. As Sunset finally made it to her destination she swung open the doors to the gymnasium and looked towards her target. Up on the stage stood Trixie Lulamoon nervously tapping her foot as she made one last look at all the various props she had set-up on the stage.
"Hey Trixie, sorry i'm late" Sunset nervously smiled with a wheeze as she set her backpack down once again and made her way up to the stage. "I lost track of time helping Wallflower in the garden" Sunset blushed. "Hhmph" Trixie huffed. " It is about time Sunset Shimmer, you know The Great & Powerful Trixie does not care to be kept waiting!" Trixie faux-scolded the unicorn teen. "Of course Trixie is willing to make an exception for a friend of course" She cooed giving Sunset a sly smile.
"Oh no, I know that look" Sunset teasingly groaned "What nefarious revenge does the great and impatient Trixie have planned for me this time?" Sunset continued to tease.
"Well, Trixie has been thinking of new tricks, and well she has come to realize that the whole pulling a rabbit out of a hat or making one dissaper has become a bit....passe. So I decided to spice it up a bit." The girl devilishly smiled.
"I'm not sure I like where this is going" Sunset stated quite seriously this time.
"Oh, but you will" Trixie sang as she threw down one of her patented smoke bombs and appeared right next to Sunset holding the costume she planned for her assistant to wear.
"You want me to wear a bunny suite? Is this a magic show or a shoot for Playcolt magazine!?" Sunset shrieked with a blush.
"Oh, calm down, it's not like i'm making you rehearse naked or anything" Trixie huffed. "Besides you and I are the only ones here" Trixie reassured her. "Now go be a good little bunny and change so we can practice my new trick!" Trixie cheered with a smile. Sunset just rolling her eyes but reluctantly agreeing none the less.
Shortly after getting the costume on and getting a good oogling from Trixie, Sunset was finally ready to help the girl with her magic trick, well as ready as she would ever be.
"OK, so here's what you need to do." Trixie began to explain. "You get in that box like so and once you are in you'll notice a hole in the bottom. You'll slide through that when you hear my verbal que from outside, and then i'll tap the box with my wand and it'll collapse and boom you'll have dissapered, well as far as the audience is concerned. Then when I start talking again you crawl out behind the table and run backstage where i'll do some more slight of hand until I say the magic words again and you magically reappear in a puff of smoke!" Trixie explained with a wide grin across her face. "Got it!?" She asked Sunset excitedly.
"ahh-I think so, more or less" Sunset replied with a half-smile.
"Eh, good enough, OK lets do it!" Trixie cheered as she opened the lid and back motioning for Sunset to get into the box. Inside the box fully propped up things were a bit of a tight squeeze, sure sunset had room enough to move her arms and legs and position herself over the small round hole, but the whole thing still made her feel somewhat claustrophobic. She didn't have time to focus on that however as she heard Trixie start her speech. "Thank you one and all for coming to see the Great & Powerful Trixie!" The girl sang to a non existent audience. "Now as you all just saw I put my beautiful and sexy, though still not quite as attractive as me assistant Sunset Shimmer in this here box." Trixie continued trying to win over the invisible crowd, Sunset just rolling her eyes and chuckling. "And now with a tap of my magic wand I shall make her dissapper!" Trixie exclaimed, Sunset taking this as her cue and doing her best to quickly slide down the hole, that is until she felt a pain on her upper arms near her shoulders realizing she had scratched them against the edges of the circle "Ouch!" She quietly winched in pain as she halted her descent, the box collapsing around her and Trixie quickly noticing that her assistant had failed to properly play her part.
"Sunset I said you're supposed to go all the way down and hide under the table!" Trixie whined.
"Sorry Trixie" Sunset apologized, I just got ah, a bit distracted" Sunset chuckled rubbing her arm.
Trixie paused and looked at her friend "What's wrong? What happened?" Trixie asked her voice becoming much more calm and concerned.
"Oh it's nothing, I just scrapped up against the edges of the hole a bit, I guess even after all this time I keep forgetting how fragile these human bodies can be compared to my old pony one" Sunset chuckled still trying to hide the scratch from Trixie.
"Here, let me see" Trixie demanded in a stern yet caring tone.
"No, no, really-i'm fine" Sunset tried to explain, but Trixie was having none of that as she pushed Sunsets right hand away from the upper left part of her arm and saw the scratch, not very bad but a bit long and bleeding a tiny bit near the bottom.
"Here, let me help" Trixie sighed as she tapped her wand against her hat and pulled out a small first aid kit.
"Ahh, thanks" Sunset blushed as Trixie began to clean the small scrape and put a band-aid over it before moving to the other side she was was similar.
"Think nothing of it" Trixie smiled. "Trixie is used to this by now, I can't tell you how many times i've had to fix-up Snips and Snails after they trip-up during practice."
"Hehe, yea-they never were the most coordinated duo" Sunset chuckled thinking back to when she had to put-up with the two dunces back when she was the school bully.
"Though, if-you don't mind me asking" Sunset began. "What ever happened to Fuchsia and Lavender? I thought they were your friends too....why don't they ever help you out with your magic acts?" Sunset curiously inquired.
Trixie just let out a deep sigh. "I-it's because" Trixie began biting her lower lip. "Because what?" Sunset asked again.
"BECAUSE TRIXIE IS BAD AT KEEPING FRIENDS OK!!" The girl yelled right into Sunset's ear.
Sunset blinked and shook her head in an attempt to recover from the rather loud reaction. "Whoa, calm down girl, i'm right here!" Sunset joked as Trixie just looked at her friend with as an embarrassed blush. "Sorry about that" Trixie apologized. "But yes, the sad truth is that Trixe may have let her ego get the best of her, and Trixie's previous companions may have said that they were tired of putting up with her and never wanted to associate with her again." Trixie bluntly stated with a pout.
Sunset just looked at the sad girl and did her best not to chuckle. "W-well hey you still have Snips and Snails" She tried to reassure her. "Yea, and as you know they're more like siblings one has to constantly babysit then friends" Trixie pouted once more. "Hehe, true" Sunset agreed. "But, well-you have me." Sunset softly smiled as she put her hand on Trixie's shoulder.
"T-thank you" Trixie stuttered "I really do appreciate that" The girl softly smiled back as she leaned in and the two embraced in a hug. "Anytime" Sunset reassured her as she slowly released from the embrace and had Trixie help her out of the hole she was for some reason still in.
After getting changed back into her normal cloths and helping Trixie put up all her props back behind the stage she looked up and noticed that the sun outside had all but set. "Wow, night already, I really am bad at keeping track of time today" Sunset chuckled as she took a swig of her water bottle.
"Eh, what is time but the ultimate illusion" Trixie profoundly replied, Sunset again rolling her eyes.
"S-so do you have any dinner plans?" Trixie asked out of the blue.
"Well, yea-kinda." Sunset replied. "I was supposed to meet Flash & Twilight at Coinky-Dink world for a bite and to help tutor ol Mr. Sentry in Math. I mean he's a nice kid, but yea-not all that bright, still have no idea why I ever dated him." Sunset laughed.
Trixie just returned a chuckle. "OK then, i'll see you when I see you I guess" The magician sighed. "Have a good weekend." She half-heartingly smiled as Sunset headed for the doors. "You too!" Sunset smiled back as she flung the doors open and began her trek to the diner.
Trixie just stood there and sighed. "Oh Sunset, maybe if I was a good enough magician i'd figure out how to win your heart" Lulamoon sorrowfully chuckled as she too began to head out the door.
