Too Close for Comfort
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe cameras flashed like crazy as the audience of unicorns, pegasi, earth ponies, and (very limited amount) of alicorns cheered. Once again Heat Wave had won another race. But this time, much to the crowds shock, the stallion had only won by the tip of his flaming mane. The pony that had come close to beating him was Sporty who was currently having his picture taken as well. Once the camera flashes stopped both Sporty and Heat Wave flew from the race track and landed on a cloud a few miles away.
It was then Heat Wave finally let his exhaustion show as his mane nearly went out in response.
“You okay, dude?” Sporty asked, Heat Wave yawned and spread his wings out as a few pops could be heard.
“Yes, I’m fine. Just really, really tired. Thank, Celestia, that was the only race we had today.” He said,
“Same here, you nearly lost that one.” Sporty said. Heat Wave frowned slightly as his mane completely went out.
“Yeah, I know.” He muttered, and Sporty immediately felt guilty. He knew he shouldn’t have said that, Heat Wave prided his racing abilities and always had the current goal to go faster and do better then before. But now that he had nearly lost a race after doing spectacular just yesterday, it wounded his pride more then Sporty could imagine.
“Hey, it’s fine. Your just tired you can’t always be on you’re A-game.” Sporty said, Heat Wave’s mane lit up just a bit at his friends encouraging words.
“I know, but Monday I will do better.” Heat Wave said as determination entered his tired voice, Sporty chuckled.
“I know, so do you want to go home and take a nap? Or go out and have some fun. Or do you have other plans?” Sporty said,
“Lets see….Love is working on her novel and asked not to be disturbed. Heart Break is at helping a mare with her recent rape and break-up with her ex. Passion and Valentine are working at there store till late. Boom is in Canterlot for three days to preform for a concert. Quilted is visiting her sister’s in Cloudsdale for a few days. And Inkie is in Kludetown working under the best blacksmith there, note to self send her a letter later. Nope nothing else planned, but, how about we just head to my place and watch a movie. It’s been a while since we cooled down and relaxed for a bit.” Heat Wave said.
“Sure thing.” Sporty replied, though he was sure that Heat Wave would fall asleep before they got through a third of the movie.
-X-X-X-
Heat Wave and Sporty entered the castle and almost immediately stallions and mare (mostly mares) said hello to the two stallions. Sporty adored the mares attention as he spread his wings and began to move his tail in a flirtatious manner. Heat Wave however didn’t like the attention (for obvious reasons) as he forced a kind smile but secretly he wanted to remind every mare he was very taken. Luckily the two stallions got to the kitchen fast enough and Sporty dropped his “wanting to get mares attention” strut.
“I’m taking it your hungry.” Sporty said,
“Not really, I just want to try this pastry I got last night.” Heat Wave said. And it took a moment for that to register in Sporty’s mind,
“Wait….you got a desert last night?” He said.
“Yeah, why do you ask?” Heat Wave said through clenched teeth. As the stallion had finally got the box out of the fridge and was now holding it by the ribbon.
“Well….it’s just we ran into Velvet and….” Sporty said trailing off, Heat Wave’s mane re-flamed as he placed the box on the counter. He then groaned and smacked his forehead, his wings twitching in unbridled rage.
“Sporty….I thought we talked about this.” Heat Wave said,
“I know, and we did! It’s just….I can’t shake this bad feeling! You understand, right Heat?” Sporty said as he waited for his friend to reply….but he didn’t. It was then the white stallion became aware that the box was now open and that Heat Wave was….crying profusely as he looked in the box. Sporty felt his ears go back as he galloped over to his friend simultaneously curious to see what was in the box and concerned for Heat Wave. The pegasus saw that a large chocolate log cake was in the box. It looked very realistic as lots of powdered sugar was sprinkled on top of it.
It was then that Sporty saw that taped on the lid, there was a note and what looked to be a very old and weathern recipe page. The white stallion didn’t understand, why was his friend crying?
“Heat.” Sporty said his concern growing, but Heat Wave still remained silent. The orange stallion gently and carefully took off the weathern paper. Heat Wave held it in his hoof gently, as if expecting the paper to fall apart or turn to ash if handled roughly. The stallion looked over the paper and a shaky gasp escaped his lips, he then placed the paper gently to the side. And ran over a counter that had a binder full of clean paper and a jar of pens and pencils on the side.
Sporty looked at the recipe, the cake, and then back at Heat Wave. He was torn on what he should do, burn the cake for making his friend act this way, see what the recipe was, or help his friend.
“Heat.” Sporty said a bit louder but still his friend remained silent, as Heat Wave now held a pen in his mouth writing on a piece of paper slowly and carefully. The white stallion then tried to reach out for the weathern paper. But just as his hoof was about to touch it, Heat Wave’s mane and tail burst into flames as if warning Sporty to not touch it. Sporty slowly retracted his hoof and he watched as the orange pegasus mane and tail went out. Finally Heat Wave tore the paper out of the binder and over to the fridge.
The orange stallion then used one of the many magnets on the fridge and put the paper on it.
“Heat!” Sporty said this time screaming it,
“Shh!” Heat Wave said shooting his bewildered friend a glare. It was then Sporty noticed that the stallion before him had stopped crying. But still, Heat Wave didn’t seem to want to be disturbed almost as if he was silently mourning. He then walked back over to the box and took the note off, but not nearly as gentle as with the recipe. Heat Wave’s eye’s became moist again as he read the note.
He then put the note on the counter and Sporty quickly took it and read it. He needed some answers!
Dear Heat Wave,
It’s me Velvet! In this box you’ve found your deceased grandmother’s long-lost recipe for her famous log cake. Which I believe where you lived she only ever made it on the equivalent of Heartswarming for us ponies: Kindled Flames. It took me years to find it, but I did it! I hope ya like that cake by the way, I did my best!
~Wove,
Velvet Applause
Sporty blinked away tears as he finished reading the letter, no wonder Heat Wave had that reaction. He would have the same reaction as well if someone found his mothers golden feather pendant, it had been a family heirloom. But somepony had stolen it from his mothers corpse during the funeral and thus it was never passed on to Sporty. The white stallion then looked up to see Heat Wave cutting himself a generous piece of the log cake. When the orange stallion realized his friend had seen him his cheeks flared as his wings spread out on instinct.
His wings we’re in a defensive stance that most pegasi wings went under when they felt they we’re threatened. Sporty could see the feathers we’re now as sharp as knives as they dared to shoot from their sockets to impale any threat.
“Dude, it’s fine, if you don’t want me to have any of the cake then that’s cool. Just relax.” Sporty said, and after a few tense moment and twitches from Heat Wave’s wings the stallion took a few deep breathes as forced his wings to close.
“I-I’m sorry, you can have a piece….just….just don’t take too much.” Heat Wave quietly said, but Sporty shook his head.
“No, your just trying to be generous and I appreciate that but you keep it. I don’t want any if it ruffles your feathers the wring way. I can always have something else.” Sporty said, he then got a small plate for Heat Wave and placed in front of the orange stallion. Heat Wave then put the slice of cake on the plate and watched Sporty carefully as he put the plate in the microwave on ten seconds.
“You wanna talk about her?” Sporty asked, and Heat Wave thought for a minute before nodding. The microwave then beeped and Sporty took the plate from it before handing it to Heat Wave. The orange stallion then led the way to his and Cozy Quilted room.
When the Heat Wave and Sporty got to the room, the white pegasus shut the door while Heat Wave sat on his and Cozy Quilted bed. Sporty then walked over to the bed and sat on it as well as Heat Wave meekly began to eat his piece of cake. Once he was done Heat Wave seemed to start thinking as he put a hoof on the side of his face. Finally he sighed his wings twitching, he then opened his mouth hid mouth to speak but all of sudden a gold flash cane in between him she Sporty.
“EEK!” Sporty said as he was so shocked and scared he fell off the bed, while Heat Wave flew up on instinct holding himself close.
“Hi guys! I’m baaaaack!” A very familiar voice rang, Heat Wave and Sporty then looked to see Velvet. The filly had a wide smile on her face, but both racers we’re surprised to see a golden colored unicorn horn on the fillies forehead as Velvet’s eyes had a gold tint to them.
“Oh sweet Celestia!” Sporty said, almost vomiting on the bed (and the floor) as he saw the unicorn horn. Heat Wave’s face went a sickly shade of green as he used a hoof to cover his mouth. Velvet looked confused at first before she gained a look of realization.
“Oh you mean this, don’t worry it’s fake I swear! Feel it!” She said, Heat Wave was skeptical (and terrified) but he flew down and touched the horn. The horn felt smooth like glass as it seemed to shimmer in response to Heat Waves touch. The orange stallion then tapped the horn and it made a cross between a clink and a dinging sound as Heat Wave’s good made contact.
“Oh! It is fake.” Heat Wave said, he then pulled his hoof back and sat back on his bed. Sporty hesitantly tapped the horn as well,
“Oh thank Celestia it’s fake.” He muttered. But Sporty kept his distance away from Velvet Applause.
“Told ya! It’s an attachable unicorn horn, it was very expensive but it was worth it, and I’m the only one who can take it off! I can even cast spells, it took me forever to learn them.” Velvet said, the filly then lit her fake horn her eye’s glowing a bright gold. It was then that Sporty and Heat Wave’s tracksuits became enveloped in a gold glow before they we’re teleported off. Heat Wave blushed madly as his wings snapped against his sides, while Sporty put a hoof over his muzzle.
“So Heat Wave, did you like the cake?” Velvet said scooting over to Heat Wave, as her horn glowed again. Sporty eye'd the fake horn suspiciously but his look soon changed one of urgency as his eye’s flashed gold.
“Well yes, the cake was surprisingly good almost as good as his nana used to make it.” Heat Wave replied, as his eye’s flashed a bright gold as well. The stallion then let out a yawn while Sporty shuttered as he quickly got up on his hooves.
“I-I’ll be right back.” Sporty said, he then galloped into the restroom and shut the door. At this point Heat Wave had passed out and was off to the land of dreams. The filly then listened carefully and as soon as she heard the lock to the bathroom click she smiled as her horn glowed again. Velvet giggled as Heat Waves wings began to glow. And with complete ease Velvet’s magic wrapped around the wings and forced them open.
She then began to gently massage Heat Wave’s wings as pops and cracks we’re heard. Velvet smiled happily as moans came from the slumbering Heat Wave’s mouth. After a few minutes the orange stallions wings closed and stopped glowing and his moans ceased. Velvet then gained a heavy amount off blush on her face as she got a brilliant idea. She then charged her horn with an unknown spell, Velvet aimed and was just about to fire directly at Heat Wave’s groin.
But luckily the sound of the toilet flushing stopped her. The spell faded from Velvet’s horn and Sporty came out of the restroom.
“Well I better get going, seeya layer Sporty.” Velvet said, and Sporty didn’t even have time to say goodbye as the filly vanished in a gold flash. Once the filly was gone Sporty gulped, his bad feeling had only gotten worse.
And he had no idea why.
