Rejected.
Tormented by Equestria’s love of the Sun. How the ponies of Equestria slept through the night, disregarding her beautiful Moon. Why was it like this? Why was the night treated so?
The Moon was awake, shining over the land in its brilliant silver light. The stars hardly shone beside the bright full Moon. The mist of the ocean drifted in the air, leaving a welcoming coolness. All was peaceful, yet so empty. So quiet. So lonely.
She stared at her Moon, both longingly and resentfully. Why must she have the Moon, while her sister was blessed with the Sun?
She emptied her mind of the thoughts. The last time they had gotten into her head, she had been imprisoned in the Moon itself. Her only company had been the cold, silent stone beneath her hooves. To be fair, it was better than being imprisoned on the Sun. Burning for a thousand years would have been less than ideal.
A single star shined brighter than the rest. Sirius glowed almost as brightly as the Moon itself. It was just as silent as the Moon, making not a sound to disturb the night. And yet she could hear it, just as she could hear the Moon. But it wasn’t the Moon. It was a star. Just one of many in the sky. But the Moon was unique. There was nothing like it. Not even the comets that streaked the sky were as magnificent, for their numbers were many, while the Moon was one. And unlike the Moon, the comets died. They burnt in the atmosphere, leaving nothing behind. But the Moon was forever. It would always be up there, standing among the blackness of the night, just as she did.
The Everfree Forest was beautiful in the night, bathed in the Moon’s silver glow. Beneath the trees was a rare calm. One that only came when the Moon was full. When all was at peace. When all was silent. When all was asleep.
“Hello, Princess.”
She nearly leaped into the air at the sound of somepony calling her. She turned around to find a yellow earth pony lying beneath a tall tree, with white leaves that hung far over the ground. The branches were perfectly straight, and the tree was unscathed, as if sacred to the forest. The pony was a stallion, probably between twenty-three and twenty-five. His mane was dark green and hung over his right eye. His tail had a neat but ruffled appearance, and was long for a stallions, reaching down to his calves. His tail was the same shade of green as his mane, but with a streak of neon-lime. His eyes were sky-blue, and his cutie mark was a cloud.
"Erm.... Hello. What are you doing so deep in the forest, away from Ponyville? Should you not be resting?”
"Yeah. I could be. But why waste a full moon?"
"Waste a full moon?" She hadn't heard that term before, but she could guess is meant he wished to see the Moon at its greatest. Why though? Why not take the night to sleep, and spend his waking hours in the day. Beneath the warm light of the Sun?
"Well, why not? Look at it. It's the Moon! And it's full! Why wouldn't I be out here?"
"But what of the day? surely you wish to spend your time in the Sun. Not here, under the cold, dark Moon."
"The Sun's great, with its light and warmth and stuff. But it's just not the same. The Sun's... um... restless, I guess. Active. The Moon's not like that. It's calm. Peaceful. And the Sun's always the same old Sun every day. The Moon changes."
"Do you disrespect the Sun? The Sun represents life, and happiness. It represents joy, and harmony. The Sun is the symbol of all that is good. Do you dare to disgrace that?"
"Hey, I never said the Sun was bad. I just said the Moon was calmer. The Sun represents happiness and life and love and all that, but the Moon represents peace. Peace is ju
Oh don't yo even thnk to [itart th[/ wth me compter!
That's better! Where was the story? Oh, right.
"-but the Moon represents peace. Peace is just as important as happiness. Why are we even discussing this? I just wanted to look at the Moon!"
Just wanted to look at the Moon. Was that it? This stallion came all the way out into the Everfree Forest just to look at the Moon?
"If you only wanted to see the Moon, why not watch it from your home, out of the cold? Surly you must have a reason other than "Just wanting to look at the Moon."
"Well, if you want to get technical, I guess I had more reason than to see the Moon. You're right, I could've looked through a window or stepped outside or something. But in the forest, where the air is calm and the night sky is silver, that's the only place I think is truly fit for the Moon. See what I mean?"
"Yes. It's just. I don't know. Somepony actually cares about my Moon."
"Well, yeah! We all care about the Moon. What'd you think? We like, shunned the night or something? It's just easier to sleep when it's dark out. Nopony hates the Moon or anything."
There were no word after that. None needed to be spoken. They just sat there, staring at the Moon. Her beautiful, shining Moon. There was nothing to disturb the night. Nothing to harm the silver light that shone down from the sky. The Moon cast its light over the forest. Over all. It's silence bring a gentle calm to everything. When the day came, the Sun would rise, and Equestria would wake from its sleep.
