To Go to Sea
Prologue
Load Full StoryNext ChapterA Strange pony walked into to town as the sun began to set. He wore a black robe and was weighed down with a pack full of scrolls. He made his way to the fountain in the center of the town and sat down. Then with a booming voice that called all attention to him he said.
“Gather round thee curious ones, thee young cubs, chicks, dragonling, and foals. While I telleth tales of ones so bold, Those brave few who went to sea, far hence from their family. Those who went whither none before, to see the far off shores, and those who square the enemy, instead of flee. For those bold sailors of old this tale is told.”
The Pony paused and let us gather before starting his tale. “It started long ago…”
I sat upon my porch as the cool winds usher in yet another storm from its cradle above the sea. The waves gentle splashing was rising to a crescendo as they crashed onto the rocks below. The melody of a stormy night jogged my memory as I began to lose myself in reminiscing about old adventures on the sea. Nights much like this one where the new crew got no rest and the old salts slept soundly. I chuckled as I remembered my first night such as this and how frightened I was that the ship might be tossed over by a wave and I would not see shore again.
“Now is not the time for memories,” I thought to myself. “There is more to be done before this night comes to an end.”
Forcing my aching joints to move themselves, I rose from the rocking chair and began to shuffle my way back into the house. It was a simple sea cottage built on the shores of Maine. Just a single floor and four rooms was the entire house, small but more than enough for an old man such as myself. It took some time but I made it to my room and to my desk. I took out a pen and parchment and began to write out a letter to my grandchildren. Not like they’ll read it but it was still necessary to say goodbye. You see when I woke up this morning I knew that this day would be my last on earth, I don’t know why and I don’t know how I do I just know that this is the end. Not exactly a surprise to me, though I had always thought I would go down fighting. I lived a long fruitful life, meet my wife, had a good career, had a family, and grandkids. So I wasn’t upset that this was the end.
As I penned the last line of the letter I felt a strange presence entering the room. I turned and on the other side of my bed stood a figure dressed in a black robe carrying a scythe and having black wings sprout out of its back.
“Hello, old friend. I am sorry but your time is up yet again.” The voice coming from the figure was terrifying yet at the same time it caused a calm to fall over me.
“I’m sorry but I don’t ever remember having a friend such as you, but I suppose that matters not now.” I replied.
The figure nodded its head and chuckled. “No I suppose that it doesn’t. Are you ready to depart?”
“Yes I am.” I said as I leaned back in my chair.
The figure reached out with its cloaked hand. As it came towards me the sleeves of its cloaks pulled back and revealed that its hand was not but bone. When it touched me I felt a cold sensation run through my body and I felt my soul releasing itself from my body.
The world around me flashed with bright lights of various colors as I felt myself move on to the next world, and then there was nothing I was in a void it was just me and the figure who had brought me here. As I stood there balls of light started floating around me and then towards me they danced all different colors and when they got close they grew stronger and a connection appeared between them and myself. I felt energy filling me and I became aware everything that I have ever been aware of. My memories all of them returned. The time that I built a reed boat along the shores of the Nile. Steering a Roman galley through the waters of the Mediterranean too face off against Cleopatra's Fleet. A rolling along side my brothers of the North we went once more today The Villages of the Isle Nation. Of navigating my ship cost of wide expanses of the Atlantic to deliver people in cargo to the new world. Of fighting alongside brothers during boarding actions as we fought the French. As these memories returns to me I also remembered every death ever occur to me whether it be by sword buy shocked or bye accident.
The cloak figure that I now new ass death allowed me time to recollect myself as this new information floating to me.
“I do suppose this means that the Hindu for a correct in a way?” I said
“I presume let you now remember your past life?” Death asked
“Yes”
“Good then you are ready to make your decision. You can either choose to reincarnate on your world as a human or you may choose to have your soul destroyed since it is an old soul, but you have not been able to reach the next world. It will be reforged into new souls to populate this world. What is your choice?”
“I suppose that I should choose to live again. I say.
“ Very good,” Death said, “I have a deal if that's the case. You see this will be one of the many many times every incarnated. By this point people will have found their way in their lives and have moved on to the next World's to begin again you have never reached that point. You have always stayed the same never doing anything bad enough to drop you behind and you’ve never done anything good enough to be raised to the next level. And I think it would just get worse for you. I have taken an interest in you because you never seemed to change for as many times as we meet, but lately it seems that you have lost your way as humanity moved away from the sea. I don’t understand but it seems to be as if your soul is connected to the sea. So I have a deal since this world is moving away from where you wish to go I will send you to another world on the same level as this one. The only drawback is that all of your memories will be destroyed in the process the only thing to remain will be your personality, instinct, and connection to the sea. What say you?”
I pondered the deal that death had offered. I could see its points every time I have lived I've been drawn to the sea, but as ages past man is moving away from it. Man looks to the Stars and no longer to the sea for inspiration. This world that I am in this leaving me behind. I do not think that I would ever be fulfilled with my life with the advent of new technology. Many would say that space travel would be much like sea travel but they would be wrong. Space is a void, you cannot feel the wind or the movement of the waves. You are trapped inside of a steel capsule surrounded by nothingness. Though the deal will destroy me it would also save me from a fates of being trapped in the world that would no longer have a place for me. My decision is made.
“Death I accept your bargain, Goodbye old friend.”
“Goodbye old friend.” With the wave of his hand over text opened and I was sucked in and knew no more.
