She felt sorry for her mother. Personally she did not love her father in the same way but as she watched from the window in her new bedroom she could tell that her mother had loved him more. It was late night in early January and both the rain and the air were cold but that did not stop the mare from looking at the grave. Her mother had been like this for about half an hour and she wondered if she should fly out to her and try to bring her back inside. Shadow Star was only twelve years old at the time and even though she did not clearly understand the meaning of death she still felt like it would hurt never knowing what it was really like to have a father or how her life would have either changed or stayed the same with both him and her mother by her side. Anyone who met Shadow could tell that she was a kind and beautiful mare, Her parents called her an alicorn ... like her mother ... only she was smaller and have light grey eyes, dark grey mane, and a medium but almost light blue coat.

Shadow began to loose focus of her mother as she began to let herself daydream and while the thoughts were decent she began to fade back into reality at the voice of her mother."Daydreaming again i see," She began before siting with her daughter,"How are you feeling?'

Shadow looked back out the window,"I wish that you would stop asking me that."

Luna thought about how she could quickly change the subject but either way Shadow would know,"With this room be alright for you?"

Shadow nodded as she got closer and leaned against her mother. Shadow leaned into her soft fur and took a deep breath before she felt Luna put her left wing around her. "I'm sorry that your having to deal with all of this at your age,"Luna began before removing her wind and watching her daughter sit up and look at her,"This...was never intended on happening."

"Did you love him," Shadow asked hoping not to get the wrong answer.

"Why would you ask that?" Luna replied.

"I'm sorry...its just...a pony can never really know for sure when someone loves them...can they?" Shadow asked shifting a bit.

"Of course they can,"Luna began,"If you want somepony to know how you feel about them you simply show it...it's more then just words."

Shadow did not know how to answer or what she should say next. "I see,"Luna said,"Most don't know how to respond to someth-"

"Do you love me?" Shadow immediately asked her mother and then getting dead silent as she realized that she had interrupted her mother like that."

"Shadow...what makes you think that I don't." Luna replied before standing up seeing that her daughter had no intentions on answering her,"Do I not show it?"

Shadow slowly got to her hoofs,"Of course you do...it's just I wanted to know from you if i'm really important anymore."

"Of course you are."Luna said,"What must I do to show you that I care."

Shadow walked over and sat on her bed."You don't have to prove it to me...everything in this life is to complicated and your the only pony that I really know."

Luna began to use her magic as she turned out the light. "Hey!" Shadow yelled,"Don't do that."

Shadow began to grow terrified as she felt the warm air of her mother's breath nearby."See...you are afraid yet you know that I am the only one here,"Luna answered.

Shadow used her magic to locate the switch and turn it back on."Why would you do such a thing...what purpose does that serve?"

Luna sighed as Shadow noticed that she now stood at the other side of the room."Fine, I will show you,"Luna replied,"Let us play a game shall we."

The last thing that Shadow saw was her mother give a dim smile before turning out the light once more. Shadow began to use her magic to attempt to turn on the light once more but she found that she couldn't. She heard nothing in the pitch black room,"If you loved me then you wouldn't be doing this."

Hearing no reply she got out of the bed in attempt to find the window or even the door until realizing that she had an even better plan. She had read in books that her horn could give off light and once she tried she was satisfied that she could no longer be frightened but soon she gasped as the light sparked out and she was no longer allowed to use her magic."Mother...please stop this."

Shadow wondered how her mother knew that she still feared the dark even though she had slept in it with her mother countless times, Now she felt alone with only her memories. Like the ones from when she was little and her parents had told her that she loved her. Or when her mother had told her that she would always protect her and do anything that it took to make sure that she stayed out of any trouble. Shadow smiled, she knew that her mother loved her and that she would always will. She knew that she was here with her and that she was trying to help her."Thank you mother."Shadow whispered.

Shadow felt something press against her before her magic enabled her to create light. Shadow turned on the light,"Now what purpose did that serve?"

Luna did not smile,"I intended on helping you overcome your fear. I love you Shadow."

Shadow replied with a soft smile that made her mother smile back,"I love you to."

"I will be morning soon,"Luna began as she broke the hug that they had started,"I should get back to my own room."

Shadow watched as her mother walked to the door and opened it."Mother?"She asked.

Luna turned around."Could I stay with you for just one more day?" Shadow asked as she looked at her mother.

Luna gave a weak nod,"Just one more day."
