Looking left and right I walked across the street, not actually paying any attention to the cars flying down the road. I was walking to work. I am a thirty two year old man who has extremely strange hobbies, for example: smithing. Today was a 'special' day, it was my birthday and I could care less about it, however, I would love it if my brother or parents recognized me once. I walked in to work, hoping someone would wish me a happy birthday, however aside from the casual, "good day" or "'morning", I received no exemplary treatment. And why should I? It was just another day that I came in and worked. What I was really hoping for was one of my family members to wish me a happy birthday.
Looking at my watch, I noticed the time. 2:56, just a few more hours until I got off of work and was able to go home. I looked at the increasing stack of paperwork on my desk and sighed, I wasn't getting a moment of respite. By the time I was done, it was 5:48. I started to put all my folders away, when my boss called to his office.
I gulped, I hadn't done anything wrong... I think. When I got in to his office, he gestured to a bright green chair. I sat down and took in my surroundings, I was sitting in a marble colored room with a large wooden desk in the center of the room. Two other chairs, blue and red, occupied the space to my left and right. I looked to the desk to find pictures of mt boss and his wife. The walls were sparse of any pictures or windows, other than the one used to watch us while we work.
His voice interrupted my thinking. I turned to look at him. "... and this was our output last year." He said, pointing to a slideshow I hadn't been paying attention to. I simply nodded and acted like I knew what was happening.
I actually started paying attention when i heard him about laying people off because our coffers weren't exactly full. Thats when I understood what this meeting was about. He was laying me off. I stayed for another ten minutes, got a handshake, my least pay check and a ticket out the door. When I walked out, I kept my composure until I got into the elevator where I shed a single tear. wiping it off, I continued to the bottom floor where i clocked out once more. I walked home in a haze.
Hoping to get my mind off of my problem, I went to my garage and tried distracting myself by trying to forge a sword, yet ended up wasting four hours and thirty dollars of steel. I felt stupid because, as any trained smith should know, you don't forge while angry, your work comes out bad. I checked my phone, hoping to have a text from my little bro about anything.
With no new notifications, I decided to hop on by the gym for a night at the gym. after an hour out, I went back to my house to tell my girlfriend my horrible news.
I walked in and looked around the plaster colored house for Guinevere I dropped my bags on my bed and strolled into our restroom, where she currently resided. I hugged her.
We then started at the same time. "I have something to tell you." Looking at her, she then told me to tell her first.
"Babe, I've- I've been layed off," I said as stoically as I could.
Her hands immediately went to her hair, and after a minute of thinking, she quietly said, "what will this mean for the kid." I was in Shock, I barely heard her, but I did and I was going to be father! This news would be great anytime other than now.
I blinked my shock away and tried my best to console her. We snuggled with each other on the bed until we fell asleep.
I yawned and looked at my alarm clock. 8:26!!!! I'm supposed to be at work thirty minutes, and It's a hour drive to get there. As soon as I got up, I remembered something that left me bitter. "I forgot, I don't have a job anymore, do I?" I mumbled aloud.
Because I was already up, I ate breakfast and looked at the pen-like object in front of me. The pregnancy test. I should be happy, overjoyed, even however I was feeling only worse. I wouldn't be able to support this child.
My girlfriend and I discussed what we would do. She was just happy I wasn't leaving her over this.
"How about we go to the doctors and see how developed she/he is." I said, smiling through the tears, I was only going to have a first kid once after all. Paying extra attention to her stomach, we got into the car, me treating her like a princess the entire time.
"come on Steve, it's not that big of a deal right now," she said humbly.
"ah ah ah," I said while waving my finger at her. "It's my duty to spoil the hell out of you now that you have my heir inside of you."
"OK," she said, feigning sadness. Then going to grab my hand, "but Steve, I'm worried for the kid. You just lost your job. I'm scared."
Remembering what is inside my wallet, I smiled, I knew one way to make this day a good one. While at a stop sign, I told her to get my wallet out of the console. While confused, she obliged and gave it to me. while at the stop sign, I pulled a shiny object out of my wallet. "Guinevere, will you marry me?"
I looked into her eyes and she mine it took her a minute but eventually she yelled "YES! YES! A HUNDRED TIMES YES!" She awkwardly gave me a side hug because we were still inside the car. however, a loud honk interrupted our momentary embrace. We both looked back and blushed. I continued driving down to the doctors office with her hand in mine.
While driving, I kept mulling over how Fiance sounded. Needless to say, I felt elated.
That rush was completely lost when I saw something to my right. There, blazing down the side street was a man who looked and drove very drunk. I looked to my new fiance and she me. I had merely milliseconds to wish for something else to happen.
BANG
beep... beep... beep...
I look around me. Everything hurts. I'm inside a pristine white room. The tell tale smell of sterile air immediately tells me where I am.
Why am I in a hospital? I try to get up but am assaulted by injuries that hurt more than anything I had ever felt before. The next few days pass on uneventfully. I get a little bit of therapy for my legs and arms, but I am constantly denied to see my fiance, I know she was on the right side so she got the most impact, but she can't be dead... right?
A few days pass and I can walk again without help, but I still use crutches sometimes. Everything hurts but I push through, only because I know Guinevere is worse off.
"Mr. Watson, your fiance has requested a visit with you," The doctor told me with a slight frown.
I didn't notice and practically ran to where she was. The doctor had to lead me, however, I was egging him on to go faster the whole time. When I got there, it was like time stood still, we made eye contact and I rushed over to her. She didn't look good at all. She was plugged into so many machines, I couldn't count.
"Are you ok my love?" I asked and she only shook her head. before I was able to inquire any further, the doctor inturupted us and said something.
"She cannot talk Steve." He stated blandly. "She has had multiple heart attacks, we are keeping her alive on a thread. Us doctors decided it would be best if she would be able to see you before she goes."
My eyes go back to my dying fiance and I blink tears away. I would be there for her now. I stayed with her for hours until her lights went out. I cried on her still body for hours and wasn't interrupted. Eventually, I was asked to leave and I numbly drove home. I was now stripped of a job, my fiance, and my first child. I broke down hard.
Days past and I was having no luck at getting a new job. I looked everywhere, even just a simple job at a local McDonalds, yet never got past the first interview.
my time was running out, I was going to have to pay my medical bills and rent but I didn't have the money required to do anything. I tried everything I could but nothing had worked out.
Depression swept in fast. A month later, I was practically living at either my newfound job as a cashier at a movie theater or on the streets. I was still paying for the medical bills and working towards finding another apartment to live in. That's when I went off the deep end. After checking my phone and finding nothing new from my parents, I decided to walk to a park. While on the walk to a nearby park, I noticed something inside a nearby store. Walking in, I caught a few stares but I ignored them. Blindly, I purchased some rope and an exquisite meal from a nearby restaurant. The last bit of money I had was spent on a hotel room in the city. Quietly, I took a bath and 'prepared' for what was to happen next.
I sprayed the last of my favorite cologne onto myself and dressed in my least wrinkled attire. I found a high enough place and tied the knot of fate. I checked my phone one last time no new messages. I frowned. I was hooping that now I would receive a comforting text. But that is not how the world works I suppose.
I positioned myself on the chair, tears coming to my eyes. I blinked them away. When I set out to do something, I never quit. I put my neck inside the 'turtles neck hold' and kicked the chair. As soon as I did, I heard the notification sound on my phone go off.
I panicked. Trying as hard as I could, I struggled out of my self imposed shackles. It was no use, nothing I did was going to get me out. I looked at my phone and tried to read what it said.
MOM: Hey sweetie me and pops found out that you purchased a hotel in town. we r coming over to see u now. see u in an hour! 😀
MOM: P.S. we r bringing your brother so be prepared to receive him
I felt true agony within myself and that text message.
"Pinkie Pie darling, are you alright?" Rarity said, noticing the sudden difference in Pinkie's ordinary self.
With hair straighter than spaghetti, Pinkie cut the spa trip with Rarity short with Just seven words "there is still time to save him."
