As a result of a rift in time and space, portals begin appearing and disappearing randomly all over Equestria. Twilight Sparkle manages to stabilize one, and she is tasked with exploring what lies on the other side. Things don't exactly go to plan, however, and she finds herself stuck in an alternate world, with no way home.

Meanwhile, a hidden threat seeking a new world to rule appears out of the shadows.
