“Private Pine Needle reporting, sir,” he said, his voice cracking slightly on the last word.
Shining nodded as he returned the salute. “At ease, Private. Please, have a seat,” he said, gesturing to the seat in front of the desk.
Pine Needle did so, his eyes glancing down at the floor. Shining allowed the silence to hang for a second or two, before reaching for a report on his desk.
“Now then,” he said as he held it up, “I have here a report from Lieutenant Kodachi, your commanding officer. And I’m afraid she doesn’t have good things to say about your performance as of late.” He looked at Pine over the top of the report. “What do you have to say to that?”
Pine swallowed. “Sh-she doesn’t, sir?”
“No,” Shining replied, “she doesn’t.” He turned back to the report. “Unable to focus during exercises, repeatedly failing to stand to attention during inspections, and it also says here that you had the nerve to snap back at her before she sent you to me.”
He set the report down and frowned, every bit the hard-ass commander. “This isn’t the sort of behaviour that’s tolerated in the Crystal Guard, Private,” he said firmly. “Answering back to a superior officer in particular is considered a serious dereliction. I brought you up here to give you an opportunity to explain yourself.”

“Yes?” Shining prompted.
