AWAKENING - Chapter One + Prologue
Prologue
I'm not normal. I'm far from it, at least for any standard pony, that is. And I don't mean that in a good way. I don't have any special talents, or skills, and I certainly dont go on any adventures, like Twilight and her friends... at least, I didnt. But I'm saving that story for later, because before I can tell you WHAT happened, I have to tell you HOW it happened. And before I can tell you that, I have to tell you who I am.
My name is Ditzy Doo, and like I said, I'm nothing special. I'm just a normal pegasus pony from Cloudsdayle. Ever since I was born, I've been picked on for the way I look, namely for my eyes. My mother always told me that my eyes were what made me, me. But it only got worse from there. Because of my eyes being the way they are, I cant see properly, which causes my clumsyness. And because of my clumsyness, everypony nicknamed me "Derpy". I don't mind the nickname that much, but its the reason behind the nickname that I dont like.
Everypony used to treat me like I was stupid, and couldn't do anything right, and for the longest time, I thought the same thing. That is, until I met a pony who was like me. A pony who was lost and confused in a world that just didn't want him. But, with his help, he guided me and everypony else to realise that we ARE special, and that we can do amazing things, if we try. That ponies name was Lonely, and when I met him, for the first time in my life, I didnt feel so alone. I felt loved, and most of all... I had a friend.
But that's a story for another time. Right now, I need to tell you what you originally came here for. And that, that my friend, is a very long story.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Chapter One~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The day had started just like every other day had, except... something was off, and i couldnt quite put my hoof on it. It was early in the morning, and everypony was still asleep. I had woken up early that day, and decided to get a head start on the days work, so I went to the post office in Cloudsdayle, and gotten the days mail. I had gotten my rounds done rather early, since there wasnt that much mail, and decided to go and wake Lonely. I checked my watch, and realised that it was stopped at 5:48 AM. Thinking that my watch was broken, I made a mental note to get it fixed.
I opened his front door, and made my way to his bedroom, a path that has become all too familiar to me in the past few months. Opening his bedroom door, I found that he wasn't in his bed. Huh. Maybe he just got up early, I thought to myself. Having nothing else to do, I decided to wait for him in his house. I sat down in front of his TV and turned it on, but to my surprise every channel displayed nothing but static. Thinking nothing of it, I decided i would fix his antennae for him.
Opening the front door, I was immediately greeted by a thick fog that had begun seeping into Lonely's house. "Had this been here before?" I found myself asking. I always talked to myself when I was alone. Looking back on the morning, I realised that there was a light fog, but it hadn't been this bad. I pushed the thought aside, and flew up to fix the antennae. After quickly fixing the antennae, I found myself unintentionally gazing into the fog, mesmerized by it. Though I could only see a few feet in front of my muzzle, the sheer size and thickness of the fog amazed me. This wasn't normal fog, I could see that clearly now. This fog was dark, almost black, and were those... stars? In the fog? It looked as though the night sky itself had dropped from the heavens to greet the earth. As I gazed into the fog, I found my thoughts drifting to Lonely, and wondering if he was alright. Landing on the ground, I pulled my phone out of my mane, a simple yet effective place to put it, and dialed Lonely's number as i drifted down to solid ground. The phone rang for a few times, and then the line went dead. I tried again to call him, but again got no response. As I dialed his number a third time, I found myself getting really sleepy. The last thing I heard was a crackly voice on the other end say my name before my whole world went black.
~~~~~
The first sense to come back to me was feeling. It was an icy coldness that started in my hooves and spread slowly to the rest of my body. The next was taste, followed by smell. Wherever i was at tasted foul, and smelled like rancid meat. I tried to breathe, but had to put a hoof over my muzzle to prevent from vomiting. Next to return was hearing. It was silent. Deathly silent. Slowly, my sight returned. I blinked a few times, and saw..... Nothing. There was just an endless expanse of nothingness staring straight back at me. I took a small step forward.....
And fell.
I was falling, and i couldn't tell how fast, or how far. I tried to scream, but no sound came out. I reached out, trying to at least feel something to grab onto, and hopefully slow my descent.
I couldn't tell when i had stopped falling. I had shut my eyes a few minutes after the descent started, and when i opened them back up, i was no longer staring into darkness..... Instead i was in... a classroom. Or rather, I was staring into the window of a classroom. I looked around the classroom, and my gaze was drawn to a grey pegasus filly with blonde hair sitting in the back of the room, alone. Scratch that. She wasn't alone. There was a group of other students around her. Looking closer, I noticed that her eyes were slightly askew. A sudden realization hit me..... That was ME!
I tried moving, but realised i couldn't. I couldn't even turn my head. I was scared, and yet.... I watched. I watched I was harrassed by the group of students, helpless to fight them. I, or rather the younger me, started crying, and I realised that I too was crying. Not in pity of the small filly, but because I remembered this exact moment. I watched as my former self tried to get up, but was forced back down by a slightly older colt. The crying got worse as this happened. I tried one more time to get up, this time pushing past the colt with all my might, and tripping over my own saddlebags. Though i couldn't hear what the other students were saying, i could make out one word. Stupid.
The world faded around me as that one word repeated in my mind. Stupid. Was I really stupid? I can't change how I am..... can I? "I..... Im not stupid." The tears streamed harder down my face. I closed my eyes and wiped the tears away, cursing at how stupid i was. I heard a voice, barely audible, calling my name in the distance. And slowly....
So slowly.....
The darkness slipped away.
