Chapters Daring Do and The Disavowed Connection
Deep within the White Tail Woods, resided a quaint little cabin. Thin rays of pale moonlight pierce through the thick foliage. Failing in its attempt to illuminate the dark nebulous environment below. A faint crunching sound could be heard in the otherwise silent woods as several shadows approached the cabin's door. A sharp knock upon the door woke its sole resident from their slumber.
The pony slowly rose in the bed, wiping the sleep from their eyes. Another, more forceful knock, snapping the pony from their drowsy state. Hopping from the bed, the occupant crept through the room, down the stairs, and toward the peephole in the door. Without warning the front window imploded, as shadowy ponies entered through the doorway and shattered window.
“Do you really believe this is where Daring Do lives,” snapped one of the shadows.
“We won’t know for sure until we ransack the place,” replied another in a nonchalant tone. Unaware of the cabin's owner hovering above their heads. The five shadows split up to search the cabin for Daring Do or anything else of interest. Only when the intruders were in separate rooms did the owner began to stalk them.
Deciding to take out the single goon upstairs, Daring quietly making her way toward the stairs. Silently landing on the top step, a faint rustling sound could be heard to the left. Despite her tip-toeing along, a light was flicked on when she entered the room. Temporarily blinded, Daring lifted her arm to shield her eyes.
“So its true, Daring Do does live in this tacky little cabin,” a stern voice was heard in the room. Daring’s eyes adjusted quickly, the blur that stood before her was revealed to be Dr. Caballeron.
With an exasperating sigh, Daring grumbled, “Why are you here pestering me at this hour?”
“How could I resist, after learning where you lived, I thought I’d reacquire what rightfully belongs to me,” Caballeron sneered back. Daring gave an annoyed huff while Caballeron continued. “My minions should be getting close to discovering where your…” Caballeron paused as he stared at the pegasus before him.
Several tense moments passed as they attempted to stare the other down, nothing but the sounds of hooves from downstairs were heard. “You know, without your outfit, your quite the looker,” Caballeron spoke with a sneer. Daring reeled back in disgust before an idea occurred to her.
It was something that she tried to avoid but given her current circumstances, it might be her only chance. Recomposing herself, both mentally and physically, Daring took a deep breath. “Do you really think so?” she replied in an alluring tone. Slowly sauntering toward Caballeron, fluttering her eyes, and exaggerating the swing of her hips.
Caballeron’s face took on a confused expression at Daring's shifted personality. Perfect, she thought while continuing to advance toward him. Daring was slowly gaining the upper hoof against her blindsided adversary. Stopping a few feet away, Daring spoke in a sultry voice, “I always thought there was something more to our encounters.”
Caballeron gave a nervous gulp, while Daring smiled at how unnerved Caballeron had become. Perhaps she could even get him to reveal his intentions if she played her cards right. Fluttered her eyes again, she tilted her head.
Daring’s luscious mane of black, gray, and silver seductively slid over her ear to partially cover the left side of her face. It took everything Daring had to keep herself from laughing at Caballeron’s apprehensive behavior. However before Daring could interrogate him, a loud crash echoed through the house. Both of them instantly turned to the door, wondering what was destroyed.
Making to most of his reprieve, Caballeron dashed past her and out of the room. Daring quickly followed but he was already down the stairs. Unfolding her wings, Daring was about to dive over the railing when a dart struck her in the neck. She quickly yanking the dart from her flesh, yet it was already too late.
Whatever liquid was stored in the dart was quickly taking effect. Daring could feel her body beginning to feel heavy. Her once clear vision was now a warped and distorted blur, ultimately fading into an abyssal burst of darkness. Her last recollection was falling, a bump on her head, and a loud thump.
Meanwhile, Caballeron and his thugs retreated from the cabin, satchels full of treasure from Daring Do’s vault. Caballeron’s racing hooves now mimicking the pace his heart adopted moments prior to his escape. That was a close call, I never thought she’d resort to that he thought. They raced into the shadow of the woods while Daring laid unconscious on the floor.
“Uuhhh” came the soft moan from Daring’s open muzzle. A chill crept up her spine from laying on the cold floor, Opening an eye, her dilated pupil struggling to bring her surroundings into focus. Eventually, she could make out the railing that ran above her head. Followed by the stairs that descended to the room below.
Daring eventually got to her hooves, with minor wobbling, possibly a side effect from the dart's contents. All at once her head began to throb, upon inspection Daring could feel a bump. Great I feel woozy and have a headache, she thought to herself. Not trusting her ability to fly at the moment, Daring made her way to the kitchen.
After a tedious descent down the stairs, hugging the wall for support, Daring finally made it to the kitchen. Despite what needed to be done, she set about making coffee. If nothing else, the familiar taste would at least simulate normality. After a couple of cups and messaging her temple, Daring felt more coherent.
Leaving the kitchen, Daring trotted into her library and sighed. The room was a disorganized mess, bookshelves toppled over while books littered the floor. Spreading out her wings, Daring slowly lifted off the ground. Maintaining a constant hover, she made her way toward the back of the room. On several occasions having to fly higher to clear toppled shelves.
From the higher elevation, she noticed her vault had been compromised. Against wanting to delay further disappointment, Daring looked into the vault. Figures, they could’ve at least left me two bits to rub together, she thought sarcastically. About ready to make her way back to the kitchen, a ragged piece of parchment caught Daring’s attention.
Lowering herself to the ground, she carefully extracted it from under a book. After finding nothing more of interest, Daring quickly made her way back toward her bedroom. However, as she entered the living room she stopped in mid-air. There stood a familiar and the first welcoming sight since this ordeal began.
In the open doorway stood, Twilight Velvet, a light gray mare with a light purple/silver stripped mane and tail. The unicorn stared at Daring with her vivid artic blue eyes. “Did I catch you at a bad time,” Velvet asked curiously. All at once Daring swooped down and embraced Velvet in a tight hug. “If you missed me that much you could always visit,” Velvet chuckled as she returned the gesture.
After a few moments they broke apart, Daring motioned toward the couch. Once they were seated, Daring began to tell Velvet of the events that transpired. Omitting the part about how she tried to seduce Caballeron. Velvet listened intently until her tale was through. “What were they after?” Velvet inquired.
Daring just shrugged as she inferred a possible robbery. “I found this note and was on my way to Canterlot when I saw you standing in the doorway,” Daring answered.
“What does it say,” Velvet asked with a hint of curiosity. Leaning closer, she tried to sneak a peek at what was written on the shred of paper.
“It mentions something about a cave south of Griffonstone,” Daring began. “With my library in shambles, I‘m left with The Royal Library, perhaps the answer resides there.” Then an oddity came to Daring’s mind as she turned to Velvet. “How come you’re here, not that I mind the visit,” Daring quickly added.
“Its just that you usually don’t drop in unannounced,” Daring asked. Velvet’s expression began to take on a sour appearance, her gaze shifted downward, as she began to fidget slightly.
“I know we have a lunch scheduled in a couple of days,” Velvet began. “However since the tragedy, I can‘t help but feel estranged from everypony.” Daring knew what Velvet meant, more then she preferred to. Nopony knew what happened that day, even now the reason remains a mystery.
Perhaps Discord had returned to his evil ways or his mind had finally snapped. Whatever the reason, He had begun terrorizing Canterlot. Both princesses tried to subdue him, Celestia was vaporized in the process, while Luna was severely injured. It took the utilization of an ancient spell, performed by the only uninjured Princess at the scene. Princess Twilight Sparkle was able to completely vanquish Discord and save the inhabitants of Canterlot.
After everything calmed down a little, everypony began to cheer for their savior. Unfortunately, tragedy wasn't quite done, demonstrating that even a god can fall. The feeble silence that settled over the city was shattered as Twilight's screech and cries of pain set the city into a panic.
Her body writhed in mid-air as if being pulled apart piece by piece. The whole of Canterlot watched in dread as the now limp form of Twilight twitched and spazzed above their heads. With a loud explosive sound, Twilight’s body was shattered like glass before fading into nonexistence.
There before the masses, one of Equestria’s greatest defenders was reduced to nothing more than particles upon the wind. A cold shiver crawled down Daring’s spine at the mere memory of that horrible day. An extremely soft sob could be heard from her left.
Without another thought, Daring began to comfort Velvet. Her trip to Canterlot just got postponed by more pressing priorities. Daring held her friend tight, granting Velvet a sanctuary of serenity, temporary as it may be.
Daring Do and The Disavowed Connection
Velvet appreciated the gesture, she knew Daring’s concern was well-intentioned. Yet it was a bittersweet reminder of the care and compassion that both her daughter and husband could no longer offer. Gently pushing her away, Velvet stared at her with teary eyes and a brief forced smile. “Thank you for trying to cheer me up,” she spoke with a rasp. “I just wanted to see my oldest friend before I left.”
“What do you mean Velvet,” Daring’s calm tone was laced with curiosity.
“I wanted to wait until we met up for lunch but I just couldn‘t tolerate living in that empty house anymore.” Daring clung to every word, all the while noticing a tone of finality hidden within the permeating sadness of Velvet’s voice.
“Do you have a particular place in mind,” Daring asked. For the first time during her visit, Velvet gave a genuine smile.
“Actually I do, thanks to Luna and my daughter’s old letters to home.” Averting her gaze from Daring, she lifted her head to stare skyward. “Not even death could stay my daughter’s helping hoof,” Velvet spoke in a prideful manner. Daring put a hoof on Velvet’s shoulder, causing her to look back at Daring.
“I’m glad that you’ve decided to travel and experience the world again. Besides we might cross paths someday,” Daring stated.
Velvet's eyes twinkled at the thought, of sharing another adventure together. However melancholy consumed her fleeting cheer, as she realized that such a thing was merely wishful thinking. “Daring, could I possible intrude upon your hospitality once more,” Velvet inquired.
Surprised by such formality from the unicorn, a chuckle slipped past Daring‘s lips before she could suppress it. “You haven’t been this formal since your apprenticeship.” Daring declared with a snicker. Velvet’s cheeks flush red with embarrassment as memories of better days rejuvenated her stunted emotions.
“Old habits die hard but this is also an important request,” Velvet announced. Daring cocked an eyebrow, intrigued to learn what favor Velvet deemed important enough to employ a formal supplication. With Daring’s undivided attention solely focused on her, Velvet’s tenacity wavered ever so slightly. “I know that your sort of busy but I was wondering if I could stay here for the night.”
Pursing her lips, Daring pretended to contemplate Velvet’s inquiry. Moments later Daring broke into a warm smile, thoroughly banishing Velvet’s apprehension. “Of course you can stay here, what kind of friend would I be otherwise. When I get back we can have dinner together before you start your journey,” Daring happily conveyed.
“I look forward to that, now go before it gets too late,” Velvet declared.
“I’ll try to hurry as fast as I can so don’t vanish before I return.” Daring chuckled before getting off the couch, opening the door and jetting off into the sky. Velvet followed her, stopping at the door to watching her sip through the forest. After a few moments, Velvet closed the door and trotted to Daring‘s library.
Easily spotting the huge compendium, Velvet used her magic to open it, and began to reshelve the books that were tossed about. Velvet didn‘t mind, it felt like cleaning after Twilight during a research binge. Allowing herself to be swaddled in memories while her corporeal form continued to methodically clean. Thoughts of being a complete family again soothed her shattered soul.
Soon those memories faded, giving way to what Velvet believed was the catalyst to her blessed life. Daring‘s recount of their first meeting. The singular moment that saved her an otherwise horrid existence. It was 15 years ago in Manehattan, it was quite a different city then it is now. Poverty stricken ponies doing anything to barely etch out a living.
Daring Do was just a fictional character then, merely an escape for a disillusioned pegasus. A.K. Yearling was a school teacher before her writing career finally took off. Yearling was a great teacher, nopony could dispute that. Yet she couldn't shake the ever looming shadow of discontent from her mind.
Try as she might, Yearling just couldn't stitch together a narrative that didn't feel clunky when read. However, she couldn't have guessed that a chance encounter would change the course of two lives that day. On a cold autumn afternoon, Yearling was making her way home from work.
The chill gnawed at her face and neck, pulling her cloak tightly around, she hoped that would offer some relief from the cold. The clopping hooves from passing ponies filled the otherwise silent day. Having moved from a small village, Yearling didn’t know what to expect as several fillies and colts bum-rushed her. They were covered in dirt and shivering, a few of them wore cloaks.
Cloaks being the general term considering that theirs were riddled with holes and tears. Only after realizing they were beggars and not dangerous, did she relaxed her muscles. The sight of them broke her heart, despite knowing that she couldn’t spare it. Yearling withdrew her pouch and extracted two bits. It was a meager amount but they cheered as if they just inherited a fortune.
Replacing the pouch back into the front pocket of her cloak, she continued on her way. A smile spread across on her face as cheers of joys sounded behind her. However, her smile quickly vanished as the familiar lump, where her money pouch should be, was gone. Turning on a hoof, Yearling charged at the group of urchins. In turn, they sprinted away, splitting from the main group as alleyways became accessible.
Realizing that if she didn’t act quickly, Yearling would lose them to the perplexing layout of the city. An idea occurred to her, momentarily pausing. She crouched low to the ground, pulled her leg muscles taut. She vaulted into the air, unsnapping the clasp of her cloak which freed it from around her neck.
Immediately Yearling’s wings unfurled from their resting position. She shot forward as if fired from a cannon, in flight. The cloak that was gently wafting was soon sucked forward by the forceful displacement of the air. Yearling soared high into the sky, the cold nipped at her now exposed wings as she observed them from above.
Careful not to lose sight of the fillies she was tracking, excitement surged throughout Yearling's body. She was absolutely giddy from tracking down the fillies. Behind her excitement rested the realization that despite life’s unyielding servitude, her spirit had weathered its attempt to break her. Unfortunately, her exhilaration came to an end as the group was soon rejoined by the others that split off before.
They came to an abandoned building, looking around to see if they were followed before entering. Knowing that the hard part was about to begin, Yearling began her descent. Luckily the sun had set, allowing her the cover of darkness to sneak about. Unfortunately, her wings weren't used to the strain that she had just exerted.
Unable to maintain her attitude, her wings gave out. Screaming, Yearling plummeted onto the snowy ground below with a thud. Her last moments of consciousness was her staring into the sky. As she slowly regained consciousness, she immediately realized that her body was shivering uncontrollably.
Riddled with pain, Yearling carefully got back onto her hooves. Slowly, she stretched her legs and wings, checking to see if she had sustained any broken bones. Streaks of pain shot throughout her body when she tried to walk. Falling into the snow again, she whimpered in agony.
After a couple of minutes, the pain finally subsided enough for her to get back to her hooves. Once again, she tried to walk again but slower than before. Bracing herself for what she thought was going to be another wave of pain. Yet, this time it wasn't nearly as bad as it was before.
"Your pretty tough for an old mare," a snarky voice emerged from the shadows.
"Show yourself," Yearling demanded from whoever was hiding in the shadows. Panic slowly gripped her mind as nothing but the crunching of leaves could be heard. Her only mode of escape was by hoof and at the pace of a lazy trot. She didn't know how to fight nor was she in any condition even if she did knew how.
The crunching sound was getting louder, terrified as she was, Yearling maintained a stoic expression. A few more seconds went by before a lone unicorn filly emerged from behind a discarded piece of kitchen appliance. “Why did you come here,” the soft voice asked.
“I was following a group of rapscallions, they stole my money,“ answered Yearling.
“I'm sorry to hear about that but you won't find them up there though," the filly replied in a rather smug tone.
Panic slowly dwindled as Yearling continued to talk to the filly. “So, where have they gone to?"
"I can't really say but if I did know, why would I tell you?" the filly retorted. Realizing that the filly was giving her the runaround, Yearling changed her tactic before answering the filly's smart-aleck remark.
"That really is a shame, since I'd be ever grateful for your assistance. Might have even treated you to a warm meal but if you don't know then I guess there's nothing to be done." That being said, Yearling slowly turned and began to walk home.
The filly just stood there, unsure if she should be outraged for being brushed off like the gnat at a picnic. Perhaps appalled was the correct emotional response since it seemed that the pegasus had no qualms about leaving a filly to freeze in the cold.
That usually works on the fillies in my class but perhaps I just made her mad instead, she thought as her hoof steps now approached the double digits. Reviewing her first adventure, she realized that despite the terror and uncertainty, she certainly enjoyed it.
Her thoughts and stride were interrupted by a pain that steamed from her left flank. Yearling gritted her teeth against it as an angry voice filled the air. "You think your soo much better than I am, don'tcha? If anything, I'm better than you, I've lost my parents, felt the heel of this harsh world grind into my backside all my life."
"Well, I'm still standing, undeterred by its attempts to break me." Yearling was struck by another snowball, this time in the back of the head. A few sobs escaped their forced exile as the filly's bold demeanor began to slowly crack.
"Come here child," Yearling sternly replied. Surprised to hear the sound of crushed snow under approaching hooves, she quickly composed herself. Spotting the filly from her peripheral, she spoke again. "Listen, if that's really how you feel then why don't you change your life?"
The filly simply stared at the pegasus, her silence prompting Yearling to continue. "I've dealt with fillies for most of my life and let me tell you that with that kind of moxie, you could easily achieve your goals." Upon hearing herself being praised the filly gave a weak smile.
"Those are some nice words but they won't put food in my belly," the filly stated.
Yearling carefully considered the filly's words and was inclined to agree. It was true that she would be provided room and board at an orphanage. However, those facilities only seemed interested in molding the next generation to fit society's standards. A place like that would surely crush the filly's spirit, like so many other orphans she has taught in her classroom.
Then an idea popped into her mind, "Since my money is probably gone, I'll make you a deal, come home with me, graduate from school, and I'll forget this had ever happened," she finished. The filly began to protest to which Yearling added that if she preferred to finish school from an orphanage, that would be acceptable as well.
Weighing her options, the filly reluctantly agreed to accompany Yearling home. As they walked, they properly introduced themselves and slowly began to learn about each other. Velvet was snapped back to reality by the realization that she had finished cleaning the library.
With a last check to make sure every book was in its proper place. Velvet extracted a rather large book and made her way to the living room, grabbing a snack along the way. The lack of her friend's presence caused Velvet to sigh as she sat on the couch. A quick glance at the window told her that the sun had nearly set.
It was a strange notion that even though Princess Celestia was gone, the sun continued its daily routine. Velvet knew that Sunset Shimmer had assumed the role of their departed princess. However, it would always be Princess Celestia's Sun to her. Illuminating the darkening room with her magic, Velvet cracked open the book and started to read, pausing intermittently to retrieve a carrot stick from the bowl to munch on.
Daring Do and The Disavowed Connection
The hooting owls and raspy bouts of wind made a uniquely melodious tune. A peculiar lullaby of the forest, brilliant in its conception. Though brief in existence, the ditty was quickly carried on by the proceeding note. Among the forest's occupants, one was especially grateful for its song.
Its dulcet song aided her sleep, despite being on a couch. The book she had been reading, now rested on her side. Her head rested comfortably on her folded arms. However, her slumber was shattered with the slamming of the cottage door. Both Velvet and her book fell to the floor with a loud thud.
Scattering the darkness with a light spell, she spotted a frantic Daring Do. Only after locking the door did Daring seemed to relax slightly. Fixating on Velvet, she apologized about for waking her but they needed to leave. Recognizing the seriousness in her eyes and tone, Velvet mentioned grabbing some medical supplies before teleporting upstairs.
Numerous questions surfaced but Velvet knew that things were about to go sideways when she acted like that. Retrieving and stuffing a saddlebag full of disinfectant, bandages, and gauze. The sound of shattered glass and a loud thud caused her to drop the bag and gallop into the hall.
In a flurry of punches and kicks, Daring Do was grappling with herself. Rubbing her eyes in disbelief, her jaw dropped when she realized it wasn't a hallucinating. Daring and her doppelganger rolled along the floor, slamming into the wall and whatever piece of furniture they drew near.
Determined to help her friend, she engulfed them both in magic. Separated now they simply glared at each other. Inhaling sharply, Velvet demanded an explanation. In an intangible jumble of words, soon degrading to shouts, they attempted to talk over each other.
Lifting them into the air, Velvet gave them vicious shake, "One at a time," she growled viciously.
A rather smug grin creased her lips as the hung there in silence. The Daring Do on the left began to speak when Velvet pointed a hoof at her. "I was on my way back from Canterlot but changelings ambushed me as I flew through the woods. Fortunately, I was able to outmaneuver them," she stated.
"A likely story." the right Daring started to protest but a glare from Velvet silenced her.
"Alright, how about you tell me your version," she deadpanned.
"At least this charlatan got the first half correct, however, I had to fight my way out. That's how "it" got here first." she growled while pointing an accusing hoof to the doppelganger.
Realizing that she was no closer to determining which Daring was the real one, Velvet recited a riddle. "I ebb and flow with time, many observe my greatness but few know my true potential. What am I?"
Both pegasi thought hard and after a couple of minutes, the right pegasus spoke her answer. "It's the sun," she replied with a voice full of confidence. Keeping a stoic expression, Velvet shifted her sight to the left pegasus. "Am I right," they complained in vain.
The second pegasus gulped as Velvet's eyes rested on her now. Twiddling her forehooves, she studdered out the word "plants" as an answer. Having concluded her test, Velvet smiled brightly at them. Thinking the other had guessed wrong, their stress began to fade.
Until their heads slammed together, neither of them would have guessed they were both wrong. With a flash of green light, two unconscious changelings fell to the floor. She quietly snuck out the back, sticking to the shadows as she moved. She didn't know where Daring was but she knew where and who to start with.
Approaching the mouth of the woods, she heard a couple of raspy voices. Instinctively, she leaped into a nearby thicket of grass. Laying flat against the ground, she overheard a changeling complaining that a drone, named Meadow Springs, hadn't returned yet. The second voice confirmed what she'd suspected at the house. Preparing to dart away, she felt a small rock under her hoof.
Although teleportation would essentially aid in her escape, the audible sound would definitely alert them. Laying there, she contemplated several other strategies. However, they were all discarded due to either telegraphing her position or having a low success rate.
Frustrated, she began to roll the rock in a circular pattern. After several minutes of brainstorming, inspiration struck. Encasing the rock in magic, she levitated it up the backside of a tree. Once the aura shrouded rock disappeared from her sight, she flung it away from her position.
After several moments of silent waiting, she heard the dull thump of its impact. The two changelings spun their heads toward the sound. Watching them rush off, Velvet silently headed through the clearing. However, she didn't get far before a pair of hooves smashed into her barrel.
Her world spun in a blur of disjointed shapes and colors. An incapacitated Velvet laid in the freshly upheaved dirt from skidding across the ground. Dazed, she watched as a black figure approached her. "It seems our intelligence was correct, you are quite clever. Who'd have thought you'd not only see through our rouse but sneak past the guards as well."
"I can see why he fell for you," a garbled voice taunted her. Struggling to focus, Velvet saw the changeling snap its neck to the left. "I thought we took care of that one," the voice disdainfully growled. Turning to see what had caught its attention, her ears hear a low whistling sound.
At first, all she could make out was a speck in the sky against the sunrise. However, the form of a pegasus began to take form right before her eyes. Her heart skipped a beat as it appeared that Daring Do had come to her rescue. From the corner of her eye, Velvet caught a glimpse of the changeling preparing a spell.
Utilizing her telekinesis, she gripped one of its legs and attempted to unbalance it. Misfiring its spell into the sky, the changeling turned its hate-filled eyes back to her. You meddling bit.. was all it hissed before the changeling flew several feet away, flipping end over end.
With unfocused eyes, she stared at her concerned savior. With a helping hoof and a shoulder to lean against, Velvet was once again standing. Regrettably, the sound of buzzing wings didn't allow time for pleasantries. Wrapping her forearms around Velvet they zipped away. The combination of cold rushing wind and constant words of concern finally snapped her back to reality.
If not for the firm arms around her, Velvet would have struggled in panic. The golden coat and mane of waving shades of black and gray against the shining sun eased Velvet's frayed nerves. "Daring Do," she cautiously yelled.
"The one and only," she replied before strafing to the right. A bright ball of green magic barely seemed to miss them as it sped by. "I'm glad you're alright, do you feel up for some fun," Daring called out excitedly.
Tightening her grip around Daring's arms, the pegasus banked right. Masterfully dodging their attacks, the pair sped toward their pursuers. Daring's moved her hooves along her torso and arm, gripping her hooves tightly. Dangling now, Velvet charged her horn as the pegasus spun her around like a top.
After completing one revolution, she was flung at the changelings with the force of a train. Although easily avoidable, the action itself caused them to glance at each other quizzingly. An action that was immediately interrupted by a right hook to the jaw by Daring.
Adding to their surprise was a small poof ahead of them. By utilizing a teleportation spell, Velvet smashed her forehooves into a bewildered changeling. As Daring dodged and counterattacked another, Velvet continued to pummel her target as they plummeted toward the ground.
With one final punch to the gut, her assailant fell limp. Rearing upon its limp body, Velvet spotted her next target. With a dull thoom she launched into the sky like a firework. Paying no mind to the sting of the wind, she adjusted her trajectory through telekinesis.
Letting the unconscious changeling slip from her arms, Daring spun around in search of the next target. A dull thoom caused her gaze to shift downward. Watching The blurred image of a propelled velvet uppercutting the changeling made her smirk. Not willing to be outshone, Daring whipped around and sped to the next changeling at breakneck speed.
Enraged, it launched several orbs at the approaching pegasus. Internally laughing, she evaded them as if recapping the basics of flight. In a last-ditch effort, it launched a jet of destructive energy. Determined to neutralize her, it tried to anticipate Daring's path. However, the beam sputtered out as Velvet delivered a dropkick to the changeling's neck.
Shooting Daring a weak smile, she vanished from sight. The sudden embrace and brief instability of her flight clued her to Velvet's location. In a strained voice, Velvet requested that they travel to Canterlot. Shelving the questions that came to mind, Daring agreed.
Needing to rest her wings, Daring glided to the ground. Velvet's soft snores caused a rather content smile to grace her lips. As they made their way to Canterlot, Daring pondered the sudden changeling attack. Their reemergence after twenty years seemed rather odd. Especially since Queen Chrysalis seemingly gave up conquering and vanished from Equestria.
