“Twilight, you’ve said that the last seven times somepony’s knocked on your door.”
“Yes Spike, but this time, I know it’s true!” she said as she dashed down the stairs. “If my calculations were correct, my package would’ve taken this exact amount of time to arrive!”
“Yes, but you were wrong the last seven ti--”
Spike then heard one of the most obnoxious squees he’d ever heard in his entire life. “Spike, it is here, it IS here! Look!”
Spike turned his head from the bookshelf he was sorting to the door, where he laid eyes upon a grey pegasus with a blonde mane and tail. One of her eyes looked directly at Twilight while the other seemed to be very interested in some grass by the mare’s feet. Twilight only had eyes for the object the mare was holding, however. A cardboard box was clutched in Derpy’s arms, the front of it depicting the newest--and first--model of the Windows UC (Unicornalized Computer), a keyboard and mouse seemingly hovering above its upside-down monitor. But Twilight didn’t even notice the box’s incorrect position, grabbing it at a speed that would make even Rainbow Dash jealous.
Twilight threw a string of “thank yous” at Derpy before abruptly slamming the door and dashing downstairs to the basement, the box now right-side-up and firmly in her telekinetic grasp. She set the box down on the basement table, only stopping to grab some scissors before tearing it open. There, wrapped in styrofoam and bubble wrap, was her new UC. She began to think of all the things she was going to do with it, and let out a moan of ecstasy. She had waited so long.
Well, it had really only been two weeks, but that seemed like millenia to Celestia’s personal protegé. For Twilight, rentals had never been enough. Her TV in the basement had belonged to the library before she’d even arrived, and had as many bugs as an anthill. She hadn’t been able to see anything. But now that her computer had arrived, she would have the Ponynet, which allowed her access to thousands upon thousands of media. All that stood between her and all that fun now was setting the thing up. And really, how hard could that be?
Spike heard another frustrated growl from the basement, what must’ve been the millionth in the last six hours. Spike would’ve been down there already helping Twilight set up her computer if it weren’t for all the books he still had to sort due to Twilight’s latest epiphany that required her to rip every book off the shelves. That and the fact that Twilight had told him specifically not to come down. But, as Spike plugged his ears for the umpteenth time that day, he knew he’d had enough. Groaning, he hopped down from the ladder, and made his way down the basement stairs.
“Twilight?” he called out. “Are you sure you don’t need any help?”
Another annoyed grunt. “Yes Spike, I’m sure!”
Spike reached the bottom of the steps and looked upon the scene. The monitor, keyboard and mouse had been set up surprisingly nicely, a simple wooden chair placed in front of them. In said chair was Twilight. Her hair was frazzled, and her eye twitching as she watched a bar on the screen fill. The router that came with the computer was lying off to one side on the table, a multitude of lights on it flickering and flashing.
Twilight turned around and groaned. “Spike, I told you not to come down here!”
Spike placed his hands on his hips. “Well, excuse me, Twilight, but I can’t reshelve everything with you screaming your head off down here!”
Twilight’s eye twitched again. “Fine then! Don’t shelve everything! Go run off and play with the Crusaders!”
Spike glared at Twilight. “Well then maybe I will!”
“You’ll at least probably!”
“No, I’ll definitely!”
“Then you will?”
“I will!”
And with that, Spike stomped up stairs in a huff before walking out of the library proper, slamming the door behind him.
Good riddance, thought Twilight. It was probably for the best. A creature his age wouldn't be able to understand what she hoped would become her new hobby, anyways. Now, why in the name of Celestia is this stupid thing not working!?
A few hours and thrown keyboards later, the router was finally up and running. Twilight laughed a little to nopony in particular. “It’s working, it’s finally working!”
Rarity was the one who first told Twilight about the new craze when she'd first got her new computer, which is what had made Twilight go nutty for one in the first place. Apparently, all the ponies in Canterlot were raving about this revolutionary new media. And as soon as Twilight opened her Ponynet browser, she’d have access to it as well. As she waited for her homepage to open, she reached out with her aura and grabbed the ointment on the table before unscrewing it and spreading some on her hooves. From what Rarity had said, doing this for long periods of time could cause your hooves to become a little chafed, and Twilight had planned for this to be an all-nighter.
In truth, Twilight was actually a little glad that Spike wasn’t home. This was certainly a guilty pleasure that Twilight wanted to keep to herself. Besides, he might've been able to hear her.
As her homepage loaded, Twilight readied herself by grabbing the plastic object that was near the computer. She familiarized herself with how it was shaped, all its curves and buttons. It seemed a little unwieldy to her, but from what she’d heard, this was the top model.
Her homepage had now finally loaded. Using her magic, she typed in four ominous letters into the search bar, four letters that Rarity had been raving about--though in private, of course. Twilight then pressed ‘Enter’, and was soon greeted with millions of search results. One thing Rarity had failed to tell Twilight about was which link was the best, so Twilight just went with her instinct and clicked the first one.
She was greeted by all the media that Rarity had promised. Her hooves started twitching in anticipation as she magically moved her cursor onto the one that looked best to her. She clicked it, and was greeted by a few obnoxious pop-up ads, but those were quickly X’ed.
Twilight thought back to what Rarity had said as the page loaded: Oh, Twilight, it was just fantastic! I hadn’t had so much fun in ages! The visuals were superb, and my hooves were having trouble keeping up with me! Oh, and there were so many different genres, too! Some that only last a few minutes, and some that can keep you entertained for hours! It’s the hot new thing everypony’s doing these days, darling, and I know you’ll get hooked when you try it!
Well, Twilight wouldn’t have to wait much longer to find out if what Rarity said was true. She got herself into position, and with a bit of opening music and the site’s name onscreen, it begun.
