"Hurry up!"
Sweetie Belle and Diamond Tiara ran through the long halls of their school, checking every door and peering through every window while a blaring siren waled throughout the school. However, every door they checked was locked, and every window showed an empty classroom. Once the two had reached the end of the hallway, Diamond Tiara looked over at the unicorn with a panicked expression.
"What now?" she asked in desperation. Sweetie Belle looked around for somewhere the two could hide. Then, she saw a janitors closet that was slightly opened ajar.
"There," she said, pointing at the slightly opened door. The pink earthpony filly looked at her companion with a shocked expression plastered on her face.
"No way," she said looking back down the hall. "There hast to be another way." Sweetie rolled her eyes at the filly and quickly trotted into the closet.
"It's either this, or nothing, and I would rather be in a stupid closet with a shield bubble then one without." Diamond gave a groan of irritation, and quickly entered the room, and slamming the door shut.
The two ponies gave sighs of releaf when the light pink shield activated, cutting the sirens blaring.
"Now, we just have to wait for this whole drill to blow over," Diamond sighed, slumping against the wall. Sweetie gave a nod, and levitated hers and Diamonds sattlebags off and layed them near a small corner.
"I just don't really see the whole point with these drills anyway. I mean, aren't most of the invaders coming from the north?" Diamond gave a shrug in reply.
"Yeah, they are... at least, that's what I've been hearing from the nobles. I just can't wait to see these stupid glassponies delt with." Sweetie wanted to correct the rich earthpony that they were crystal, not glass, but held her toungh.
For about fifteen minutes the two sat in complete silence. Then, when the shield had flicked off, Diamond rushed to the door. However, as she tried to open it, she found that it wouldn't open when she had tried to twist the knob. For several moments she tried jigggling the knob, pushing against the door, and even resulting in attempts of bucking it down.
After a few minutes of no progress from the pink fillys asult, she collapsed to the wooden floor, panting heavily from the exertion.
"You have got to be fucking kidding me," she growled. Sweetie gave a small sigh, ignoring Diamonds swearing, and levitated two glass bottles of Apple soda from her bag.
"Please tell me you brought bobby pins or a couple sowing needles," Diamond said with a pleading look on her face. Sweetie shook her head as she popped one of the lids off, and took a quick swig from the bottle.
"Nope," she said, smacking her lips together. Diamonds eyes went wide, and she quickly scrambled to her hooves.
"What do you mean, nope. Don't you live with a fucking seamstress?" Sweetie gave a flat look.
"You honestly think that I would be carrying that stuff around like she does?"
"Well duh, you used to do that all the time. Why not now when we, oh, I donno, needed it!" Sweetie sighed, and levitated the second bottle over to Diamond, who simply stared at it.
"Two reasons, one, I haven't done sowing in a very, very long time, and two, we really need to talk." Diamond growled and snatched the bottle from the unicorns magical grasp. Twisting the top off with her teeth, she gave a quick swig, but gagged and coughed at its contents.
"Seriously?... y, you... g, got this?" she coughed. Sweetie shrugged and took a slightly longer swig from her bottle.
"Well, obviously, considering what today is," she said, swirling the contents in her bottle. The older earthpony gave the white filly a frown at her words, before realization began to kick in, and she stared down at her bottle.
"Oh, it's that day, huh?" Sweetie gave a sigh and nodded. Diamond gave a sigh, and winced at the taste of the liquid.
"This isn't even my favorite," she grumbled. The earthpony set her bottle down next to her, and stared at the younger filly.
"Well it was the cheapest brand I could find, and you have no idea what I had to do to get the damn stuff." Diamond frowned at the number of things the little filly did to get the liquid, most involving making promises to stallions that would never be fulfilled.
"You didn't," she gulped, not wanting to finish her sentence. However, the younger unicorn already knew what she was thinking, and made a disgusted face.
"What? N, no, Diamond th, that's just discusting," Sweetie said rinkling her muzzle.
"Sorry, it's just... never mind, you said we needed to talk?"
"Yeah, we need to talk about this whole war." Diamond gave a slight groan of annoyance.
"We've been talking about nothing but the war, Belle. Everrsince the Empire returned it's been war this and war that." Sweetie sighed and placed her bottle between her legs.
"I know. It's just that I don't want us to get involved again like last time." Diamond frowned and trottted towards the little filly, and sat next to her with bottle in hoof.
"We're not going to get involved. If we do, we'll just run, alright?" Sweetie sighed and gave a nod.
"I guess," she sighed. Sweetie then looked down at her drink, and a small chuckle escaped her lips.
"What's so funny?" Diamond asked taking another long pull of her drink. Sweetie shook her head.
"Nothing, just thinking of the time you took me out for my first drink," she said with a smile. Diamond gave a snort of amusement, and gave her a smirk.
"Oh yeah, you were so scared to go into the tavern that I had to drag you in by your tail," she said with a distent look in her eyes.
"And remember when, when you tried to convince Starsworl to give you that gender swapping potion," Sweetie laughed.
"I almost forgot about that," Diamond said with a smile. "I tried to make a move on Clover. Who knew he was in to that kind of stuff."
Sweetie Belle gave a small blush at Diamonds comment, but gave a frown when she began to think on something, something that her pink companion immediately noticed.
"You okay?" she asked. The white filly gave a frown.
"Do... do you remember that day, when all this started?" Diamond gave a sigh, and nodded.
"How couldn't I. Mother and father tried to get us as far away from the warring tribes. Then came the storm and those fucking windigos. Next thing I knew, we were in that cave, and then we drank from that stupid pool." Diamond gave a quick swig from her bottle before continuing. "How we got out of that cave before it collapsed I'll never know."
"Sweetie Belle gave a nod, and placed her bottle on the floor. Around them, came the sound of distent muffled booms that shook the small closet.
"It's funny, I can't remember that song mother would always sing to us before bed," Sweetie said. Diamond smiled, and finished her drink. Placing it next to Sweeties, she rapped a hoof around the fillys neck, and had the filly lean on her and gently began to sing while stroking her mane.
"I remember blue skies, the warmth all around us
I remember each day the air was filled with song
Then the clouds greyed and the snow began to fall."
Slowly, as Diamond continued to sing, the muffled booms began to get closer and closer. She felt Sweetie wrap her forelegs around her neck in a tight embrace. Diamond returned the hug as she sung.
"And the beasts came from the skies
They froze all who'd try to rise
With pain and grief, they fled to the mountains to find releif."
Diamond ended the song with a humm, and felt tears streaming down her cheeks as well as Sweeties. The two heard a high-pitched whistling coming from above them, and like many times in their long lives, hoped it would be the end. However, deep in their hearts, they knew that it will never end.
