Death Note: Equestrian Anarchy
It was a rainy. dimly lit day in Canterlot. Twilight Sparkle walked through the pitter-patter of the rainwater showering down on the fine city. She wore a scientists' jacket slung over a brown formal vest and brow khaki pants. She donned her glasses ultimately giving her a nerdy look compared to her appearance in school. Her hair was droopy as a result of the rain, and it looked somewhat disheveled unlike her normally well groomed bangs. She carried under her arm a large file, which she struggled to balance as she walked, with a white sticker, in red letters it announced, "CLASSIFIED". She shook off the rain as she shuffled through a few other people who were luckily more prepared than her, and held their umbrellas to the sky. She felt twinges of envy for them, however she kept trucking along. Soon, she entered the business district of Canterlot, and began making turns past many offices, high end restaurants, and mansions.
After minutes of walking, she came upon the Law Offices of Crimson and Ike. This was her place of employment for the past year after graduating Canterlot University with her legal degree. It was a bit lower scale compared to the other law offices in the area, but the head attorney, Crimson, was a very nice woman, but a stern mentor. It was exactly the type of person Twilight would've preferred to be the protege of.
Twilight opened the door to the office lightly as she popped her head into the small office on the side of a building. It was dark, and nothing was readily visible inside of the building. Twilight swiftly switched on the light switch to find the office vacant, something that was uncommon for the two head attorneys. Twilight took her seat behind the desk in the back and set her documents inside of her drawer. She crossed her arms and sat in wait as the T.V. cut back from commercials.
A news channel was playing, this one from Saddle Arabia. The headline read "1 Suspect dead, along with 2 Victims in botched Bank Robbery". Twilight raised an eyebrow to this, as not thirty minutes earlier, she had overheard people in the streets discussing this exact event except the suspect was alive. Did the police detain him, but he was so rowdy they had to off him there? Twilight shoved the rambling thought from her head and began to focus on the television more intently then before.
"In an unexpected turn to this almost perfect bank robbery operation carried out by Risky Ants, the suspect, it is being reported that the suspect has died of a sudden heart attack. The cause of this heart attack has yet to be discovered, but is for now being considered a side effect of the stress of the situation."
Twilight squinted her eyes at the relevation. Though that seemed a bit too coincidnetal, she was glad that all the officers and people in the bank were okay. That being said she, for some reason, couldn't shake the feeling that something more malicious was behind it. If you couldn't handle the stress of robbing a bank, why rob it in the first place? Wouldn't that be signing your own death warrant?
Twilight quietly turned on her computer and looked at the calendar next to her desk. April 21st, today's date was circled in red marker and "Meeting with Prosecutor's Office" was scribbled crudely inside of the circle. Twilight's eyes widened. Today was the meeting for the upcoming trial that she was in charge of, and neither one of the head attorneys was available.
"No, no, no, no, no..." Twilight muttered under her breath as she scrambled about the office at a speed that would impress the Wonderbolts. Through her cluttered clambering, she knocked over a book on Crimson's desk, revealing a yellow sticky note, with the following written on it: "Had to step out on Police Business with Canterlot PD. Stall the meeting until we get there. Love, Crimson".
"Stalling? How am i going to do that?" Twilight lowly asked herself as she started to make her way back to her seat, while looking back up at the telivision.
"This just in. Paramedics on scene have concluded that the suspect's heart attack was, in fact, not stress related. Police on scene are claiming steadfast that they did not fire a single bullet, and are just as confused as the rest of the public is. This is News Channel 17, and we will continue to update you as news becomes more available."
"Alright this is just getting weird." Twilight thought aloud, bringing back her previous train of thought that the death of the suspect wasn't actually caused by stress but by some suspicious outlier. Twilight put her reading glasses down onto the table and opened the case files for the upcoming trial.
"Gotta be prepared. Gotta be ready. Nothing can go wrong this trial...absolutely nothing." Twilight thought, her mind racing. "A case of Arson on a capitol building. The suspect is Mantis McPray. He is an employee of the Hoovington Capitol Building and is solely responsible for the security of the premises. He was seen walking near the premises via camera feed, but was promptly seen disappearing and reappearing from view. This, as commented by the prosecutors office in Hoovington, was likely an attempt by the suspect to mask his actions by modifying the camera feed. There are no other suspects at the time. Presiding Defense Attorney: Junior Defense Attorney Twilight Sparkle Presiding Prosecuting Attorney: Maj. Nightmare Moonlit."
"Wait a minute...Nightmare Moonlit? Why do i feel like I have heard his name before?" Twilight pondered. A knock then came at the door.

Nightmare "Dark Side" Moonlit was a name that is feared within the legal world. At first, many considered him nothing more than an immature, wet-behind-the-ears rookie, however that changed quickly within his first two years in Canterlot courts,. Being a Canterlot University alumni, he was very young when he first set foot into the legal realm. Graduating a class ahead of Twilight and her friends, he was twenty-one years old when he had his first trial. He lost two trials in this two year career and was eventually seen as a prodigy in the courts. Putting many mass murderers, thieves, and vandals behind bars was chlilds play for him. However, He is infamous among prosecutors for being known to use underhanded methods and coercion to get guilty verdicts with maximum sentences. Though there always was and always will be prosecutors of this nature, Nightmare is a special case. Due to his exceptional social skills and his family heritage, he rose to the rank of Chief Prosecutor of Canterlot. His public image, however, is fairly different from his personal image. Nightmare sees himself as a very justified unicorn. Through being raised in the poorest of conditions and seeing many atrocities he developed a heightened sense of justice. Anyone accused of a crime was automatically guilty in his eyes.
Nightmare sat in his small office in the outskirts of the lonely city of Hoovington. Hoovington, located west of Saddle Arabia, is a somewhat dry and desolate place. Outside of the occasional family visits, no one ever really came by to tour, as there was next to nothing to see aside from a lush forest and a spring located in the very middle called the Fairy Spring. The Spring is where Nightmare went to meditate. Meditation is a big part of why he is who he is now.
Nightmare took a sip of his coffee. He dressed himself in a Canterlot Royal Guard uniform on most occasions. Nightmare sported a spiky build of his blue hair, and each of his bangs sprouted into a purple end. His eyes were a deep red, as inherited from his family. His build was athletic, however he did not spend much time trying to maintain it, as he found other activities more important. Many of this medals and awards decorated his sash and his chest, and a golden diamond decoration on both of his shoulders further signified his rank of "Major". Having had military training from the time he was 14, he took great pride in wearing his uniform in all occasions, and would wear it even to his trials. He breathed out strongly through his mouth as he sat in complete silence. He tapped his hand onto a black notebook lying dormant on his wooden desk. As he did, a figure appeared behind him. The figure was at least ten feet tall and had a blank, disturbing expression on his face that would make Fluttershy's "Stare" look like a baby face. He had two large wings, 3 feet long each, and was dressed in all black with a skull belt straddled alongside his waist loosely.
"Ryuuk." Nightmare lowly said, not bothering himself to turn around and face the demon-esque creature. "Im assuming that you want an apple correct?" Nightmare continued, digging in one of his drawers pulling out a semi molded over apple, as both his and Ryuuk's eyes shining red in the dark office.
"Of course." Ryuuk took the apple happily and began to munch on it.
"It has been five days since I've had this thing. I still haven't used it, though you beg me to do so regularly. And for some reason, you still come around. Let me ask, is it because you enjoy my company...or is it because you're using me to gain these despicable fruits?"
"You're really boring. So you can rest assured I don't like you. But I will say these fruits are worth sticking around for. They taste even better here than they did in the human world."
"You keep mentioning this "Human World" to me. So then you've dropped a notebook into my realm before?" Nightmare inquired, folding all of his fingers together and beginning to rest his pronounced chin upon them as a makeshift rest.
"It's too difficult to explain to someone who isn't...a God of Death."
"Of course." Nightmare irately commented as he opened the Death Note once more. He had opened the book upwards of fifty times ever since he got it, but still decided against writing anything in it. Being the type of person he is, he read through all of the rules, from "The persons name who is written in this note shall die", to "he number of pages of the Death Note will never run out."
"The world is honestly a terrible place. Murders, rapes, robberies, assaults, arsons, the list goes on, happens on a daily basis and society shows no real signs of ever progressing. That being said I don't really want to involve myself with this notebook. The odds of this working are high. I may have to try it just once. Just because the possibility of this working has piqued my curioisty. Mulling it over at least. Now that I know Shinigami exist, and there are multiple dimensions, this isn't really that hard to believe anymore y'know?"
"I guess I know..." Ryuuk responded, unsure of how to answer such a question. Ryuuk tossed the apple hull onto the ground, to which Nightmare shot a glance back at him as he walked over to pick it up. Nightmare shook his head, tossing it into the small metal trash can that sat lonely in the barren corner of his room.
"You don't gotta litter y'know. Youse making things harder on me."
"Besides keeping an eye on that there notebook that what I'm here for kid." Ryuuk said fiddling with his long, dark, claw like fingers. Ryuuk ended his fiddle with sticking up his middle finger, a gesture he learned back in the human world from some of the despicable humans he had seen.
"God that human world has turned you into a douche." Nightmare said, shaking his head yet again. He took a pen from the bottom of his desk drawer and scooted his seat back out. He sat down hastily, unsure if Ryuuk would try to pull an old pull the chair out from someone sitting down trick, since now he's flipping people off. He opened the book to the first page. He creased the book, so as to make it not close when he let go of it, and turned on his small television set in a spider web threaded part of his room.
"Bank Robbery in progress at 4766 Saddle Arabia" The headline read.
Nightmare skimmed over the headline as the screen then flashed to both a picture of the scene with helicopters circling the premises, and a picture of the suspect along with his name under it.
"Bank Robbers are some of the worst. Can you really not make your own living that badly to the point you have to take from others? Do they not realize they aren't 'sticking it to the system', they're really just hurting the middle man and stockholders by doing this." Nightmare complained, looking at the television with disgust. Ryuuk cocked his head a Nightmare quizzically.
"I don't know a single thing about what you're talking about." He commented, causing Nightmare to roll his eyes. Nightmare redirected his attention to the television subconsciously grabbing hold of the pen once more.
"Well Risky Ants. Seems you're my first subject in cleansing this world."
As he finished scribbling Risky Ant's name, a knock came to his door.
Nightmare, with quick hand movements, slid the notebook into a random drawer and began to sip his coffee, as the door opened to his office.
In walked none other than Rarity Belle, Nightmare's head (and only) secretary. She was dressed in an extravagant women's red blazer with jewel encrusted buttons, and had a white button up with a burgundy neck tab wrapped around her neck. She wore a silver skirt that was almost too small for her and wore burgundy dress shoes. She walked graciously over to Nightmare's desk and clocked in. He couldn't help but admire the way she carried herself and her way above average looks. He avoided having serious feelings typically, but with her it was almost inevitable. But due to his status, among other intrusive factors, he left the feelings in the dark part of his mind, 'never to arise'.
Rarity sat in the seat in front of Nightmare's desk and crossed her legs. Even the way she sat had an air of serenity to it.
"Good morning Major Moonlit, how has your morning been so far?" Rarity asked, flipping her nicely curled hair behind her shoulder.
Nightmare sipped his coffee, and opened his mouth before Ryuuk chimed in with an answer of his own.
"I'm doing well, how about yourself? I'm Ryuuk." He said, the same unchanging expression plastered across his face as Nightmare shot his gaze backwards and mouthed the words "Shut the hell up". Ryuuk giggled and began floating upside down in midair as if trying to attract attention to himself. "Oh you know she can't hear me until she touches the notebook."
"I know that." Nightmare unintentionally said aloud, buying him a quizzical look from the fashionista sitting across from himself.
"You know what? I don't believe that answers my question very well. Are you sure you passed your bar exam?"
"The hell type of question is that, I guess this badge upon my uniform is just for show, eh?" Nightmare shot back, his face growing red as he was reminded of the distress that the bar exam caused him. Such an insinuation was an insult on his intelligence, and to him, he felt it made him look bad to other lawyers that he failed the bar exam on his first try.
"Oh calm down, you know I'm just pulling your leg, darling." Rarity said with a lowly giggle as she grabbed Nightmare's coffee cup and sipped from it, grimacing as she did. It was extremely sweet, it seemingly rotted her teeth as she drank it. she sat it back down and moved it closer to Nightmare as if she was giving it back to it's original owner. Nightmare took hold of it and began to drink the rest of it, drinking it with no problem whatsoever, and sat the empty cup onto the desk.
"Of course you are." Nightmare said as he looked up at the T.V. screen as the scene on it shifted.

"Hold up, what now?" Sputtered Nightmare as he opened his desk drawer and looked down at the notebook with gaping eyes. Half of him had expected it to work but as always there was a better half that believed in the science of the world rather then an otherworldly force like this. Nightmare stood from his desk, attempting to bring himself back into the real world from his dimension of confusion.
Rarity got up as well, as confused about the broadcast as Nightmare. "We, um, have a meeting in thirty minutes. Well, rather you, but I was thinking I could..tag..alon..?" She trailed off as she noticed the officer was still staring at the Television with bucked eyes.
"Y-yeah. I know. L-let's get going shall my sweet." Nightmare said, unaware of what slipped from hit tongue and into existence.
"Alright, sweetie." Rarity playfully responded putting her index finger under his chin and tickling it. She walked out of the building, taking hold of an umbrella on the way out. As she walked outside, Nightmare backed up a tad and opened his main drawer. He grabbed the notebook and stealthily slipped it into his coat pocket. It stuck out a tad but it was not very conspicuous. Nightmare glanced back at Ryuuk and stuck his hand over his mouth to cup his words.
"The fuck did that come from?" He asked, legitimately confused.''
"You called her your sweet, kid."
"No, I really didn't."
"Yes you did, I just heard you."
Nightmare rolled his eyes and walked outside along with Rarity. They began their trek to Crimson and Ike law offices.
The two talked about various topics, ranging from politics to legal proceedings, to the recent new trends in the fashion world as they walked down the rainy path to the bus station. After getting to Canterlot, they walked for five more minutes until they got to the law offices on the corner of a main building. Rarity knocked on the door as the Death Note slipped from Nightmare's coat.
Ryuuk laughed.
