Luna yawned deeply, pulling the covers close to her body. She opened her eyes and stared out at the morning sun. She closed her eyes and willled herself to fall back asleep.
It was only a few minutes later that Luna realized how long she had slept. She shot out of bed and stared at the sun rising over the horizon. She pulled the covers off of her and rushed to her vanity. She pulled a brush through her hair as she stared at her reflection.
She noticed the bump on her stomach and made a mental note to go on a diet. But for now, she had to apologize to Celestia for waking up so late. She set the brush down and bolted out the door and through the halls. She burst into the dining room just as Celestia was setting plates of pancakes down on the table.
“I’m so sorry sister!” Luna pleaded, panting from her hasty sprint. “I usually wake up on time. I really didn’t mean to-“ Celestia cut her off with a gesture of her hoof.
“It’s ok, Luna.” She stated gently, inviting Luna to sit down and eat. “I took care of the moon. You don’t need to apologize. Besides, you’ve been so tired lately.” Celestia hugged her sister as Luna sat down at the table and picked up a fork.
Celestia glanced down at Luna’s belly and froze. A million thoughts were racing through her head at that moment. Her sister didn’t eat unhealthily at all, so it made no sense for her stomach to have a bump.
’You’re thinking way too much into this, Celestia.’ She thought, sitting down to finish her pancakes. She was about to take a bite when she noticed Luna’s inquisitive stare.
“Er, sister?” She queried. “Do we have any ketchup in the fridge?” Celestia set her fork down and stared at her sister.
“Surely you don’t want ketchup on your pancakes.” Celestia said jokingly after a minute of hesitation. Luna flushed and nodded seriously. Celestia’s playful grin fell and she got up and trotted over to the kitchen. She soon returned with a bottle of ketchup engulfed in her yellow aura.
Luna took the bottle happily, thanked her elder sister, and poured a heaping puddle on her pancakes. Celestia stared, before looking away and eating her own pile of cakes. She finished it within seconds, getting up and putting a napkin to her face. She threw it in the trash, can before turning to Luna.
“Luna?” She asked cautiously, glancing every once and while at the bump on Luna’s stomach. “You haven’t been fooling around with anypony, have you?” Luna looked aghast.
“I would never do such a thing.” She said, annoyed with Celestia. “The last time I was out of the castle was a few months ago. I couldn’t have fooled around with anypony-“ Celestia cut her sister off.
“What exactly were you doing out of the castle?” Celestia queried, growing worried by the moment. “I’m just curious.” Luna tapped her chin, thinking back to three months ago.
“The guards invited me to drink with them.” She stated, still flabbergasted at her sister’s attempt at shaming her. “We had a few drinks and then we... Then we...” She focused on the memory, curious as to why she couldn’t remember anything from that day.
“You got drunk...” Celestia muttered, her already white face paling with horror. “You don’t think you could’ve...” Luna gave her sister a look of terror. She lifted a hoof up and played with her mane. She lowered her head with shame.
“I thought I was just getting fat...” She muttered bluntly. “You’re not mad at me, are you dear sister?” Celestia shook her head and sighed. Luna could feel tears welling up in her eyes. “What am I going to do?!” She groaned in anguish, burying her face in her hooves.
“We’re going to find the culprit.” Celestia growled, then realized what Luna had actually meant. “We have no other choice than to keep it.” Luna sighed and wiped her tears. “Why don’t you go and relax, I’m going to find the guard that did this.”
Luna sobbed into her pillow, shaking with sorrow. She grabbed her stomach and held it. What was she to do? Her subjects would be ashamed of her. Her sister was definetly disappointed. And she didn’t have any clue how to take care of a foal.
“Luna?” Her sister asked. “Can I come in?” Luna fell silent. She pulled the covers over her head and struggled to keep her sobs to herself. “Luna, I know you’re awake.” The door opened and Celestia walked in.
Celestia shut the door behind her and sat on her younger sister’s bed. She rubbed a hoof on the lump in the bed. Celestia pulled the cover back and nuzzled Luna’s head. She wiped her sister’s tears away with the blanket and smiled lovingly down at her.
“I’m not angry.” Celestia comforted. “I was just surprised.” She ran her hoof through Luna’s hair. “If it makes you feel better, You don’t have to raise it alone. I will help you.” Luna sniffed and nodded numbly, closing her eyes and enjoying the sisterly touch. “Do you feel better?” Celestia inquired.
Luna nodded and dried her eyes on her blanket. She pushed herself up and hugged Celestia. Celestia wrapped her hooves around her in turn. Luna began to sob once more. This time, however, she wasn’t as upset as she had been.
“I love you Tia.” Luna mumbled warmly. Celestia chuckled and nuzzled her sister lovingly. They sat like that for quite awhile, enjoying each other’s company. Pretty soon they’d have to tell their kingdom.
It would be to Luna’s surprise that the kingdom would adore the foal growing inside of her. And though she can’t agree with them, maybe someday she’d come to see the foal not as a mistake, but as a son or daughter. She would just have to wait a few months.
