The Gaurdian of Canterlot High
Chapter 1: Reset
The Alley was filthy, housing scores of rats. The ground was covered in rancid refuse, releasing an unfathomable smell that permeated the nostrils of any who passed by.
For Sunset Shimmer though, it was as good a place as any to die.
She sat shivering in a small pile of trash bags, staring at her recently acquired razorblade. All she could think about was how much she deserved this, how she had this coming.
She wished that she had died that night. When Twilight and her friends defeated her. She wished that rainbow of friendship that had changed her from demon to human again had just killed her instead. At least it would have been sooner. At least she wouldn’t have had the time to screw up again, like she always did.
It wasn’t the fault of Twilights new friends. They had tried to help her, to make her one of their friends. But she screwed up. She always screwed up. The things she had done, it wouldn’t surprise her if they never wanted to talk to her again. They had been her last hope, and she had thrown it away.
She had nothing left. No home, no family… no friends.
All she had ever done was hurt others. She had bullied, put down, and threatened nearly everyone at school. And even though she had tried to be good, she had still hurt others.
Maybe now she wouldn’t have to. After today she would never hurt anyone ever again.
She held the blade against her throat, taking one last shaky breath.
She breathed out, then-
“What took you so long? I don’t have all day”
Sunset nearly cut herself in surprise. She knew that voice. It was the voice of the one person at Canterlot High who was more hated than she was, though not by much. It was the voice of one who Sunset herself despised, even before putting on the crown and turning into a she-demon.
“S-sorry, I had to-”
Sunset recognized this voice as well, it was of one of the few students who had escaped her bullying. Though not by much.
“Do I look like I care why you’re late?”
“n-no.”
“That’s right. Now stop wasting my time, do have the money or not?”
“Here, it’s all I have.”
There was a sound of bills being ruffled.
“Is this a joke? This isn’t even half of what we agreed on. Where’s the rest of it?”
“I don’t have anymore, that was it. I swear I’ll pay you back later.”
“I want it now you brat.”
“Please, I just need more time! I’ll get you your money!”
“Oh, I’ll give you more time, but first I got to make sure you understand what happens when you disappoint me.”
“What are you-. Hey! Let go of me!”
Sunset looked up to see Tirek dragging Scootaloo by her arm behind him. Neither of the pair noticed her while they walked by.
Tirek threw the young girl against the wall opposite of Sunset. Before Scootaloo could react, he had grabbed her wrists, pinning her to the wall. Scootaloo struggled uselessly in his grip while he leaned forward, his intent displayed across his face like a neon sign.
He didn’t notice Sunset stand up and walk over. He didn’t see her grab a piece of rebar. He didn’t see her when she swung at his side.
The impact was strangely silent, but Tirek’s shout of pain was loud enough to make up the difference. He twisted to see who had hit him.
Only to smash his face into Sunset’s incoming fist.
The blow sent him spinning, but he managed to stand until Sunset slammed the rebar into the side of his legs. He dropped, grabbing his newly wounded limb.
Sunset turned to Scootaloo, who was staring in wide-eyed shock at the sudden violent assault.
“Leave.” Sunset commanded. The girl took off down the alley, disappearing around a corner in a few seconds. Sunset turned back to face Tirek, who was struggling to stand up.
“Oh no you don’t.” She kicked him in the ribs, sending him sprawling on his stomach. She leaned down, pressing her knee into his back and grabbing a fistful of his hair, yanking his head back.
“I see you even look at her again, and I’ll end you.” She hissed, “Understand?”
“You bit-”
Sunset didn’t hesitate, she smashed his face into the ground before yanking his head back up.
“Your next words better agree with me or I’ll take this rebar and extend your spine by a few feet. You understand?”
“I-I, I understand.” Tirek said weakly.
“Good. Glad we agree with each other.” Sunset said soothingly before smashing his head into ground again, knocking him out.
She stood up, looking down in disgust at the passed out… actually, there wasn’t a good word to describe Tirek. He was well known throughout the school for being the only person to have the record for detention, as well as suspension. He had also been held back from graduating two years in a row, making him the oldest student at Canterlot high. There were plenty of rumors about the guy, ranging from petty theft to more... criminal activities. Tirek was the kind of guy who took whatever he wanted, not giving a single thought to the damage he left in his wake.
Sunset looked up from his unconscious form and down the alley Scootaloo had left. If Sunset hadn’t been there to stop him…
She shivered at the thought, not wanting to think about what might have been. She felt sure that Scootaloo wouldn’t say anything about what had happened, and it was unlikely that Tirek would call her out for beating the crap out of him.
Sunset looked around the alley, unsure of what to do next. She didn’t feel like killing herself anymore, and something told her that Tirek wasn’t going to keep his word. The thought of leaving Scootaloo at his mercy made Sunset want to vomit.
She looked down, spotting the razorblade she had discarded for the rebar. She scowled and stomped on the metal, smashing it into the alley filth, as well as destroying any last fatal thoughts.
Sunset let out a deep sigh and started walking down the alley and into the rising sun. She reeked of filth refuse and wanted to get to school in time to shower.
