Prologue, to fall like lightning.
I only remember darkness. That completely dark and empty void that keeps my mind in a foggy haze that I can't blink away. That makes my stomach twist in fear. That makes me run to some corner with a flashlight and just sit there until it goes away.
I never liked the dark, it always made me afraid of what layed within. I know it's stupid for a fifteen year old girl to be afraid of something so childish, but it's true. Sadly for me, this was how I remember coming here. How we came here. But it was soon to be replaced with extream pain. If you ever wanted to know what it felt like waking to thousands or possibly billions of lightning bolts running through your body, believe me when I say that you don't.
I remember waking up in complete agony, not able to move my body or scream in pain. All I could do was stare up at the dark grey cloudy sky with my mouth slightly opened, allowing the pouring rain to run down my throat. I could hear high-pitched sirens all around me, and I could see red and blue lights flashing in the corners of my eyes. A few minutes passed and I could hear voices yelling all around me. I could see a bright white light being shined down at me by some kind of flying thing that wooshed over me. I tried to blink away the burning pain of the light in my eyes, but watched as it moved to another part of the surrounding area.
"Hey, we got a girl over here!" yelled a males voice from my left. I heard footsteps running towards me, and saw a strange creature I've never seen before. It had long dark brown hair, light skin, and light green eyes.
“Humans,‘ I thought. I didn't know how I knew what this creature was, but then again, I didn't know anything at this point.
I watched as it knelt over me, seeming to examine my pain-filled body. It looked around, a frown crossing its lips.
"How many are there?" it asked in a females voice.
"I don't know, Anne. Hundreds? Thousands?"a male said from somewhere in the distance. The female shook her head, and she quickly turned her attention back to me.
"Someone get a gurney for this girl, now!" she called over her shoulder. A few seconds passed, and I heard something squeaking its way over to me. I felt myself being gently raised by the female human and another that I guessed was male based on his looks, and was gently placed on a hard wet surface that was being pushed by another human. I then felt the gurney being raised, and watched as the dark grey sky was replaced by a dry white ceeling.
At this point, I was able to get some motor function back to my body, and I attempted to sit up. However, I was gently pushed back down by a gloved hand, and I could see four humans in doctor uniforms around me.
"Please, Miss. lay back down, we're trying to help you," said the one who was pushing me down in a male voice. I began to protest, not knowing what was going on. Opening my mouth, I tried to speak, but could only let out a strange gurgled sound due to my dry throat, and began to violently cough and hack up the rainwater in my mouth. After a few seconds, I was able to catch my breath, and looked over at the humans.
"W- what happened?" I asked in a gravelly voice. The doctors looked at one another with confused looks on their faces.
"We don't know, Miss. We were sent here to aid some people when some lightning struck their house. We were able to help them, but when we were about to leave, there was this massive bolt of lightning that struck the field." – he shook his head. " next thing we knew we were dealing with possibly thousands of people who suddenly appeared out of nowhere."
"We had to call hundreds of ambulances to pick you guys up," added another. I nodded as I slowly layed back down, and turned my head to look out one of the windows.
The sight that presented itself to me was terrifying. I could see thousands of humans laying on the ground of the large field that seemed to stretch for miles, with hundreds more tending to them the best they could due to the weather. I saw that the humans that were being cared fore wore brightly colored clothing and had multi colored hair.
I tenderly reached a hand up to my long hair, and looked at a few strands of it. I could see that my hair was a light green, and my skin was light. I looked over at one of the doctors, who was simply watching me fiddling with my hair.
"D- do you have a mirror?" I asked hesitantly. The human gave a nod. He pulled out a long mirror from behind him, and I was able to get a good look at myself.
I wasn't surprised to find myself as a human. My skin was pale, and I had golden yellow eyes. I placed down the mirror and looked down at myself. I wore a light grey shirt, long blue pants, and white shoes.
I suddenly felt my stomach lurch down as whatever I was in began to move, causing me to wince and let out a soft groan.
"Are you alright?" one of the doctors asked in concern. I grimaced and gave a nod in reply. However, if I was being honest with myself, I wasn't. Whatever I was in was going really fast, faster then what I could guess was normal for my body.
I felt the doctors beginning to examine my body, checking my blood pressure and my heart for any problems from whatever brought me here. I guessed I started to stare into space, because I felt one of the doctors gently tap my arm. I looked over at him with a raised eyebrow.
"Can you answer a few questions for us?" he asked, holding a pen and notebook in his hands. I gave a nod, and waited for his first question. "Do you remember what happened?"
I gave a frown, and tried to think of how I ended up here. However, the more and more I tried, the more I began to feel a headache beginning to form.
"N- no, I don't," – I shook my head at the man. "I'm sorry."
"It's alright," he said in a calm voice. "Where are you from? We might be able to contact your parents."
"I... I... don't know," I said, once again shaking my head. The four doctors looked at one another before returning their gazes.
"Do, do you remember anything?" I frowned and narrowed my brow in thought. What do I remember? I thought for a long time, after a while I began to feel a memory beginning to bubble to the surface of my mind. I mentally reached out for it, and pulled it to the forefront of my mind.
"Lyra Heartstrings," I muttered. The men looked at me in confusion.
"Excuse me?" I looked at the men.
"My name, it's Lyra Heartstrings, and I'm fifteen years old."
