The balence of all things
"Pathetic. Just look at them all, going around with their meaningless lives, not having a care in the world of what goes on around them." The tall pale woman took another sip of her wine as she continued to stare down at the city far below her, "and to think, I was the one who actually helped in the founding of this city. Yet I'm given no credit."
"That is true, Ma'am. But think of the many things you've accomplished since that time. You created a successful company where we drain the love from those... mortals and distribute it as perfumes and other such items, while feeding us and yourself for an entire century," the employee said as he stood in front of the woman's large oak desk. He nervously fixed his black tie, then his white collared shirt, and finally his white name tag. The woman turned to face him, her emerald green eyes locking with his own.
"Yes, but at the cost of abiding by Celestia's law in which we only take one hundred mortals, drain them of every inch of love they have, and simply release them with no memory of what occurred in this building." She gave a heavy sigh as she walked over to the desk and set the glass onto the wooden surface. Brushing a long lock of long dark green hair, she continued. "However in recent years, that has become rather difficult with the new borns in the lower levels."
The employee frowned as he watched the woman straighten her long black suit. "But, can't you ask her if she may permit a few more mortals?" he asked. The woman let out an exhausted sigh as she sat in her chair and rubbed her temple.
"I've made attempts of contacting her, but it seems she keeps dealing with one problem in the city after another."
"I see," he muttered, looking down at the file of papers in his hands. "Should I send these files to be copied?" The woman gave a nod with her eyes closed as she continued to rub her temple. The employee smiled and began making his way to the door. However, he stopped and turned his head to face the woman once again.
"Ms. Chrysalis, if I may be so bold. Have you ever thought of changing our methods?" The tired woman frowned as she looked at the man in confusion.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, a few scientists and myself have been trying to research other methods of feeding the hive, while keeping the company from going bankrupt." The older woman gave an annoyed look towards the man.
"And what pray-tell is this research?"she asked as she slightly narrowed her eyes in suspicion. The man gave a smile as he straightened his suit and stood proudly with a smile on his face.
"Well, as you are well aware, I'm the head of your research team an–"
"Spare me the details and get to the point," Chrysalis snapped, cutting the man off mid sentence. She winced and pinched the bridge of her nose. "My apologies, Thorax. You were saying?"
Thorax cleared his throat before speaking once more. "Well, we've been finding that giving the love we extract to other members of the hive has shown some surprisingly positive results. Most of the willing participants told us that they haven't felt hungry once over the last two weeks."
"Thorax, you're a fine member, and an even finer employee and researcher, but I will tell you right now." Chrysalis took in a deep breath through her nose. "You must stop the research."
"But, my queen... I thought... I thought what I was doing would help us stop feeding off mortals."
"It is... I mean it would, but we can't. There's something I need to tell you." Chrysalis gave a heavy sigh and gestured towards one of the two black leather chairs in front of her desk. He nodded and took a seat on the left. He watched as his queen closed her eyes, trying to collect her thoughts.
"Few of our people within the hive know of this, but do you know the true reason why we steal love from mortals?" Thorax thought on this for a few minutes before answering.
"To feed the hive, and to keep our company afloat so we can steel more love from our customers who enjoy our products." Chrysalis nodded.
"Yes, but there is more to it then just sustaining the hive. It is to keep a balance in the city."
"A... a balance?" Thorax gave his queen a confused look as he stared at her. "My queen, I'm confused. What balence?"
The woman frowned as she drummed her nails on the desk as she thought for a few moments, but got an idea after taking a quick glance out the window.
"Tell me, what is the opposite of the day?"
"Um, the night?" Thorax replied with a raised eyebrow. Chrysalis gave a nod as she continued.
"Good, and what is the opposite of chaos?"
"Harmony."
"And what is the opposite of love?"
"Hatred, but my queen, I'm confused. What does this have to do with the hive?" Chrysalis gave a sigh, but smirked as she answered.
"Well, it has everything to do with the hive. You see, for every positive thing in the world, there's also a negative to balance it." Thorax continued to give her that confused look. She huffed and rolled her eyes. "Think of it like this, if there were no love in the world, there would be only chaos and distruction. Leaving us to all die and eventually everything else in the world. However, if there would be nothing but love in the world, there would be complications. While, yes, we would be able to feed the hive indefinitely, but at the cost of no one being able to feel love. Leaving the world and the population to no longer bare to start families, all that would remain would be a hate filled, chaotic and dying world."
Thorax gave a slow nod as he slowly processed the new information. "And if the hive no longer consumed the love in humans every so often, the population would be too big, leading to famons and disease."
Chrysalis gave a grim nod in responce. "Exactly, though if it were possible to keep the balance in all things while not feeding off humans, I would jump at the offer. Sadly that isn't an option." Thorax sighed and got up from his seat.
"I'll cancel the research and get these copied." Chrysalis nodded, and watched him leave her office. She sighed and leaned back in her chair, watching as the sun slowly moved through the sky.
"As the sun rises, so does the moon. We must always keep the balance in all things."
