A Freshman's Guide to Ponies
Chapter One- Graduation
Previous ChapterNext ChapterChapter 1: Graduation
Jem walked down from the podium. Everyone applauding him for graduating Middle School. He's remember this for the rest of his life. Funny thing is, he'd say the same thing during high school graduation and instantly forget about it. Jem was, as many would say, normal. A generic everyday human. Looks can be deceiving though. In fact, he isn't normal at all. He plays a ton of video games, works part time at the local pizzeria, and even watches a show no one would expect to watch. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
Jem was a closet brony, meaning that he didn't show or tell many people that he liked the show and fandom. The only people he's ever told was his older sister, parents, and his best friend, Gabriel, who was a brony himself. Each of them supported him and didn't really care.
As Jem walked down the aisle, he heard his best friend calling his name. He searched the crowd for his best friend, which was hard considering they were all wearing their school uniforms. Jem finally found Gabriel and took the seat next to him. As more kids were called up, Gabriel started talking: "So, did you here about the semi season finale?" he asked. Jem smiled. He was talking about the new episode coming in a few weeks.
"Yeah I heard, how could I not have?" He replied.
"We waited one and a half seasons for Chrysalis to come back! Now she actually is! Aren't you excited?!" Gabriel exclaimed. Jem liked to think of Gabriel as the more humanoid and masculine version of pinkie. Not only did he have poofy red hair, but he was also optimistic and had the same bubbly, random attitude. He was sort of the class clown which got him into trouble. What kind of kid fills up every locker lock with gum?!
"Look, dude, this isn't the time or place to be talking about this." Jem answered back. Then as a last resort, he put on a goofy accent and started saying:
"Are you bovvered?" He said.
"Don't you dare Gabe."
"Bovvered?" He continued. This went on for a few minutes. Jem obviously lost and they both ended up laughing.
"SHHHH!" Ms. Tarry hissed. They both turned around in their seats. Ms. Tarry was one of the main reasons they were happy to leave middle school. She sent them to the principal's office for no reason then gave them detention for unexcused absence. She was almost like Mr. Krupp from Captain Underpants but female. And she wasn't hypnotized. They tried it in February. It didn't end well.
After the awards were given out, the students were released and allowed to be sent home.
"We're SO proud of you Jem!" Jem's mother, Alexandra, said as she hugged and kissed him.
"Mooooom! C'mon you're embarrassing me!" Jem said.
"Join the club buddy," Gabe said as his mother did the same thing. "It'll be worse at high school." They both shared a good laugh after that. Finally, it was time to go home. Until Ms. Tarry walked in front of Jem and his family.
"Summer school." She said.
"What?" Jem asked in response.
"You and Gabriel have summer school." She said.
"Excuse me ma'am." Jem's dad, Michael, said, "My son passed with As and Bs. I don't think you should be looking for my son for summer school."
"Are you a teacher sir?" She asked mockingly. "Because-"
"I teach at the local college." Michael said in response. "Psychology."
"That's enough Janice!" The principal butted in, "Don't try getting your student in trouble on his last day. He passed fair and square." With that, Ms. Tarry stormed off with a huff. "I'm so sorry about her. It's been rough since her husband passed. Everything didn't end on good terms." He sighed. "Well, have a good summer Jeremy."
"You too Mr. Kowalski." Jem replied. With that, he and his family walked outside and into the car.
"So son, what was that about?" Mike asked.
"She doesn't exactly like Gabe and I." He answered
"Well I could see that, but there's always a reason to these types of things." Mike replied.
"Gabe pulled a couple of pranks and I helped out on a couple of them. But not by much I swear!"
"(Sigh) I'll give you a break for this one since it's graduation." Mike said
"As long as you don't do it again, we'll be happy." Alexandra added. Jem smiled. He was happy to have such understanding parents. And his father was truly good at his job. He was an excellent psychologist as well as a teacher. There wasn't one student he failed!
When they finally got home, his parents went back to work, his sister to school, and Jem ran inside and turned on his Xbox One S. He went online and played Star Wars Battlefront Two. He may suck at the game, but he loved playing it! After playing for a while his family came home. They had made his favorite dinner. Linguini with Clam Sauce, the old family recipe. He thought that his summer would be calm, relaxing, with nothing big going on whatsoever. Well, besides politics but that's besides the point.
"Jem, could you take the trash out buddy?" His father asked. Jem did as he was told and went into the back to the bins. As he went over, he heard something moving inside of the trash can. It was swaying, moving as if whatever was in there was desperately trying to escape. Jem opened the bin and suddenly everything flashed and went black.
Jem opened his eyes to find an odd creature staring at him. It had a large, long row of teeth, it was a sick brown color, had the look of a human, it had a tuft of brown hair on top of its misshapen head, red bulging eyes, and it was bipedal. He felt a warmth in his chest. He looked down and saw a glowing red heart in the center. He started to walk away from the beast and the world came back into vision. Jem had wondered what had just happened, but as he wondered, the beast climbed out and scurried away.
Jem not believing his eyes put the trash in the trash can and ran inside. He locked the door and was about to run upstairs when his mother asked, "Could you take Jojo for a walk?" He rolled his eyes and walked back downstairs. He put the collar and leash around the dog's neck and walked outside.
'What the hell was that thing?" Jem wondered, "And where did it come from? It wasn't from here, that's for sure. Jem started to feel warm. The warmness, turned into heat. Soon his feet were burning and he picked up his dog and jumped onto the grass nearby. He finally cooled down. He barely dodged a car that was driving on the sidewalk.
"Hoowhee! We got it boys! Lets get the heck outta here!" Screamed one of the men in the car. They were called, The Hunters. Unoriginal, but the name fit them well. They were definitely hunters down to the bone. All they did was find innocent creatures, and BANG! It's said, they never miss a shot. And Jem really didn't want to know what they caught. As soon as they were in the Wildlife preserve across the street, Jem let Jojo do her business and brought her back to the house.
As Jem and his dog walked to the porch, his feet felt hot again. This time, he looked down and saw that the ground was glowing faintly, the colors of the rainbow. The glow moved away from where he was standing and he instantly cooled off. He was entranced at what he had seen. As he and his dog got to the front porch:

Jem turned around to see a ring of rainbow in the sky, slowly spreading out. He had sworn he had seen that before. He then saw something else. Chunks of soil and plants flew up into the air and fell, revealing a creature flying up into the air. It was followed by a rope with a couple of other creatures attached to it. It then hit Jem. That was a Sonic Rainboom, Those were the six ponies and dragon he had watched every Saturday. The ones he had wished were real, were real.
Two Hours Ago
Equestria: The Celestia Era, 24 moons after Luna's return.
"So let me get this straight Twilight," Rainbow Dash said, "You want me to use my sonic rainbow to break through the BARRIER, so you can study the monsters? You were kinda straight forward with the details."
"That's the thing Rainbow," Twilight said, "there are so many monsters behind it that need to be studied. If my calculations are correct, and you hit the barrier in this exact spot first," She gestured to an X on a picture of the BARRIER, "then you might be able to break through the barrier without breaking it entirely."
"Twilight I still think this is a bad idea." Spike said entering Twilight's Headmistress office with a stack of paperwork, "Princess Celestia gave you strict orders to not do this! Since when do you break her rules?"
"Spike, in order to discover the unknown, you need to think outside the box!" she replied.
"There's a difference between thinking outside the box and completely destroying it!" he shot back.
"That's enough y'all," Applejack intervened, "Twi, this is your decision. Personally, I feel that you shouldn't go through with this. But if you want to do this, its your choice, not ours."
"Thank you Applejack." Twilight smirked,"Anypony else?" Nopony said anything, "Good, now lets go."
"Applejack dear, "Rarity whispered, "Are you sure this will go well?"
"I never said I thought it would." she replied.
"I just don't understand why she invited me along." Fluttershy whispered to them.
"Well duh!" Pinkie exclaimed in her cheery attitude, "Obviously Twilight will need your help if we run into a monster! I mean, only you will be able to talk to it, so won't that be easy for you?"
"*gulp* I hope..." Fluttershy said hesitantly.
"Don't worry girls, I know everything will turn out fine." Twilight called back to them, "I'll have Starlight here to stay in contact with us. She'll be able to get help if anything goes wrong." After they left the school they headed toward the Everfree Forest, to the mountainside where the BARRIER was located.
When they finally reached the Mountainside, they saw a glowing, jagged wall. Sunlight poured inside as if nothing were there.
Twilight set up her equipment. A meter to check wind speed, a monitor to show the strength of the barrier, and much, much more. She tied AJ's lasso around Rainbow's barrel and tied the rest of it around one of each of her friends forelegs. "Ready Rainbow Dash?" Twilight asked.
"I sure hope so!" Rainbow called back. As she made sure the lasso was tight enough she flew up into the air, high enough to get a good start, but low enough to keep her friends on the ground. It was a very, very long lasso. finally she flew straight down building up speed and gaining the momentum to cause her specialty sonic rainboom. Finally she nearly reached the ground and flew straight at the barrier.
As she hit it, she disappeared into a swirling vortex of rainbow light. "RAINBOW!" they all yelled.
"We have to pull her back!" Twilight yelled. "Everypony pull!" They did as they were told and tried their hardest. Even Applejack couldn't pull her back through. They finally gave in and were also pulled through the vortex. The portal was in the middle of the barrier and monsters also slipped in.
Present
Jem stared as Rainbow scouted the area. He left his dog on the porch and ran over to the preserve. He pulled himself over the fence and walked through the tall grass. He slowly made a small dent in the grass to make room for his eyes to look around. He saw the clearing and five ponies and one dragon. He looked up to find Rainbow Dash still searching the area. Jem then heard a gunshot ring through the air. The next thing he knew Rainbow was falling towards the ground. The other six creatures held their ears in pain.
In the distance Jem heard some people cry, "We got it fellas! Lets go get it!" It was the hunters. And they weren't going to show mercy.
